Police arrest impeached Ogun LG chairman, Adedayo

Operatives of the Police Command in Ogun on Monday arrested the impeached Chairman of Ijebu-East Local Government (LG), Mr. Wale Adedayo, at his residence in Ijebu-Ife.

Adedayo had recently raised some allegations about the Gov. Dapo Abiodun-led administration in the state.

He had alleged that the state government had since 2021 been tampering with funds for the state’s local governments (LGs) sent through it by the Federal Government.

The impeached chairman had earlier been arrested by the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and later released.

According to reports, Adedayo’s action had led to his impeachment by the LG’s councilors over allegations of financial misappropriation.

Mrs Kafayat Adedayo, wife of the impeached LG Chairman, confirmed the arrest in the local government area’s headquarters.

She said her husband was arrested by officers numbering about 10 from the Police Command headquarters at Eleweran in Abeokuta.

Mrs Adedayo said the police officers informed her that his arrest was based on a petition written against him by the state government.

“They came on Monday afternoon in a Mistubishi car to effect his arrest. About four of them were in uniform, while others were in mufti.

“The police operatives said they were acting on instructions based on a petition filed against him by the state government.

“He was taken to Abeokuta by the police,” she said.

When contacted, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Abiodun Alamutu, confirmed Adedayo’s arrest.

Ogun police confirm arrest of 19 suspected cultists

The police command in Ogun says it arrested 19 suspected cultists during its successful tactical operation.

SP Omolola Odutola, the State Police Public Relations Officer, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Monday.

Odutola explained that the tactical operation that occurred on Sunday led to the arrest of one Ogunnibi Hammed, the kingpin of the Eiye Confraternity.

She noted that the notorious cultist had been widely known for his involvement in gruesome attacks against rival cult groups in the state.

The PPRO stated that the operation was as a result of a combined effort between the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, the Anti-Cultism Unit (AKU), and the Obalende Division of the police force.

She added that the police acted on intercepted information, saying the operation targeted the suspected cultists who had been causing terror in various areas, including Odogbolu, Sagamu, Ijebu Ode and Ilishan areas of the state.

She stated that apart from Hammed, 18 other suspected cultists who were arrested had confessed to being active members of different cult groups.

The police spokeswoman explained that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Abiodun Alamutu, had ordered an immediate investigation into the individuals apprehended.

“As the investigation progresses, the police will provide updates to the public regarding any relevant developments in this case,” he said.

Ogun gov, Abiodun orders crackdown on cultists in Sagamu

Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, on Monday, directed security agencies in the state to rid Sagamu and its environs of cultists and cult-related activities in the state.

Abiodun, in a statement issued in Abeokuta by his Chief Press Secretary, Lekan Adeniran, expressed the regret for the avoidable loss of innocent lives and wanton destruction of property by the hoodlums.

The directive came in the wake of renewed clashes among rival cult gangs in the town at the weekend, raising tension and panic among residents of the town.

According to him, the police and sister security agencies have been given a matching order to deal ruthlessly and decisively with those disturbing the peace of the town.

The governor reiterated his administration’s zero tolerance to brigandage and lawlessness, warning that those responsible for the current crisis in the town would find themselves to blame.

“As a responsible and responsive government, we are very sad with the resurgence of activities of criminal elements under different outlawed groups, raising unnecessary tension in the sleepy town of Sagamu and its environs.

“Let me categorically state that we are more than determined to put an end quickly to the nefarious activities of these hoodlums and enemies of our people who are hell-bent on truncating the peace of our land.

“Let these urchins be rest assured that the state will be too hot for them to operate as we are re-evaluating the security architecture for greater surveillance and tactical operation,” he said.

The governor noted that the new security approach would be implemented in collaboration with the traditional institution, community and religious leaders, youth groups as well as other critical stakeholders.

Abiodun, therefore, appealed to people of the town to provide adequate and useful information to security agencies for prompt response in order to prevent future occurrences.

  • Ogun Assembly alleges Police connivance in land-grabbing, seeks IG’s intervention

Ogun Assembly alleges Police connivance in land-grabbing, seeks IG’s intervention

The House of Assembly in Ogun on Tuesday asked the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately look into alleged illegal arrest and detention of innocent residents of the state.

Mr Olakunle Oluomo, the House’s Speaker, while making the request during plenary in Abeokuta, said the arrests and detention were on trumped-up charges by the police.

He alleged that they were also being done in connivance with some suspected land-grabbers.

The lawmakers had taken turns to report rampant cases of land-grabbing in their various constituencies.

They spoke while contributing to a debate on the second reading of the State Anti Land-Grabbing (Amendment) Bill.

“Hundreds of innocent residents of the state have continued to languish in the various detention cells of the Police Force both at Alagbon in Lagos and the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

“The detentions were due to the connivance of land-grabbers with some security agents against innocent members of the public,” Oluomo said.

He pleaded with the Inspector-General of Police to wade in to ensure that innocent people were not made to suffer on account of trumped-up charges.

“All land-related matters should be charged to court, and I can promise that the new amendment to the bill will ensure the constitution of a task force by the State Government to handle land-related matters,” the House Speaker said.

Earlier, while opening the debate on the bill, the sponsor, Damilola Soneye, lamented that the issue of land-grabbing had become rampant in the state.

Soneye explained that there was the need for the amendment to make the law more effective and efficient.

Other lawmakers who spoke said the activities of land-grabbers had been hampering the peace, progress and development of the state.

“Hence, there is the need to take a holistic approach towards addressing the menace,” the bill sponsor said.

Also, during plenary, the Ogun State Legislative Funds Management Law, 2023 and the Ogun State Official Orders of Precedence of Public Officers and Other Persons Law, 2023 were considered.

  • Ex-Ogun governor’s wife describes Plaza demolition as Executive recklessness

Ex-Ogun governor’s wife describes Plaza demolition as Executive recklessness

Mrs Olufunke Daniel, wife of former Ogun Gov. Gbenga Daniel, has tackled Ogun government over the demolition of her 5-storey DATKEM plaza in Ijebu-Ode, describing the act as executive recklessness.

Mrs. Daniel stated this on Sunday in a release issued by her lawyer, Mr Adeyinka Kotote (SAN), of PAGE Law office and made available to newsmen in Abeokuta.

Agents of the Ogun government in the early hours of Sunday, demolished DATKEM plaza in Ijebu Ode, belonging to Mrs. Daniel.

According to the release, the legal firm expressed shock that the state government ignored a court order served on its agents on Thursday, September 7, asking them to stop all actions on the building.

“This matter began when the Ogun State Planning and Development Authority agents entered the building premises on August 1 without any prior notice.

“Interestingly, a quit notice was only served on August 31 by the same Planning and Development Authority, asking the owner to vacate the premises within three days.

“However, DATKEM applied for unsealing and regularisation of the building on August 2 and paid the mandatory fee of N500,000 to the Ogun state government. We have evidence of this payment.

“We were shocked and astonished therefore that the Ogun state government ignored the ongoing legal process and went ahead to demolish the complex in the early hours of Sunday. We want to believe that the State Attorney General’s advice was ignored on this matter,” Kotote said.

“Our clients, as law-abiding citizens of Ogun state, will continue to seek redress in the courts. Even when our clients have suffered unimaginable and huge losses as a result of this illegal demolition, we will not relent in pursuing justice in the courts,” he said.

He added that he believed Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun was not informed of this illegality.

“But if he was informed and still decided to use the instrument of the state against our clients, it is nothing but executive recklessness. But we will continue to fight for justice and ensure that our clients get justice,” the release said.

in a reaction, the Ogun government said that DATKEM Plaza, Ijebu-Ode, was an Illegal structure which contravened Ogun Physical Planning laws.

The state government, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Olayiwola Abiodun, said the structure violated the building codes of the state with numerous defects.

Abiodun explained that several efforts made by the state government to halt further development on the site were ignored by the developers.

He said government officials requested the structural engineer in charge of the building to avail the state with the structural equilibrium of the building, a request that was ignored.

He recalled the various incidences of building disasters across the country, adding that the state government would not fold its arm and allow such occurrence.

According to the permanent secretary, what the government did in partially pulling down the defective building was to be proactive.

Abiodun challenged the owners of the structure to produce evidence of government approval in their possession.

He said for a commercial building of that status, there must be parking space to accommodate vehicular traffic within and outside the facility for workers and visitors.

“The provision of the law is that 45 to 50 per cent of available land is for construction as a buildable area. The building lacked stage certification, which is usually issued at every stage of construction.

“Owners were served the necessary notices, including abatement, contravention, stop work and demolition between May and October 2022, which were ignored.

“DATKEM Enterprises Limited submitted application for an office building, located along Ibadan Road, Ijebu Ode, in 2009 with registration number CB/05/299/2009.

“The proposal was for five (5) floors with airspace of 3 metres at the right, 5 metres at the left, 5 metres at the rear and a setback of 32.5516 metres to the middle of Ijebu Ode/Ibadan road, Ijebu-Ode.

“The Zonal Town Planning Office observed during routine monitoring that the construction did not conform with the plan granted as there was a deviation from the airspaces and setback.

“In addition, the building had been modified and enlarged with an additional storey building at the back thereby becoming over density.

“In view of the above, a contravention notice with Serial No. 0106983 was served on 24th May, 2022. Stop Work Order with Serial No. 000623 was served on May 24, 2022.

“Another Stop Work Order with Serial No. 001065 was served on July 22, 2022, when the first notice was ignored. Demolition Notice with Serial No. 0007549 was served on October 11, 2022,” he said.

The statement also indicated that despite all these notices, the developer was recalcitrant and continued with the construction work.

“This prompted the re-sealing of the site on August 1, 2023. But the sealing did not stop the developer from further construction as work continued on the site.

“However, the developer wrote an appeal for unsealing, which was considered so as to evacuate the belongings in the premises. Thereafter, quit notice with Serial No. 0030750 was served on August 31, 2023.

“In view of the fact that the developer had remained recalcitrant, the Zonal Town Planning Office’s recommendation for the demolition of the office building was upheld,” he added.

Abiodun reiterated state government’s commitment to ensure the safety of its citizens, adding that any defective building in any part of the state would be demolished to safeguard the lives of the people.

The Ogun government says it has commenced the payment of 40 percent Peculiar Allowance to civil servants in the state.

Mr Tokunbo Talabi, the Secretary to Ogun Government, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Abeokuta on Thursday.

Talabi emphasised that the peculiar allowance was paid in fulfillment of the promise by the Gov. Dapo Abiodun-led administration to cushion the effect of the economic hardship.

He explained that the purpose of the allowance was to boost the capacity of the workers for better productivity.

The Secretary said that conversion of the government buses to Compressed Natural Gas by the present administration would be an added advantage to ease workers’ and residents’ mobility.

“The plan to make the payment is what was agreed on with labour unions to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal.

  • Finally, DSS frees embattled Ogun council chairman

Finally, DSS frees embattled Ogun council chairman

The Department of State Security Service, (DSS) has released the suspended Chairman of Ogun East Local Government, Wale Adedayo.

Adedayo had dragged Gov. Dapo Abiodun before the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) demanding the investigation of the governor over alleged mismanagement of local government funds.

Adedayo who was also suspended by the council’s legislative house, accused Gov Abiodun of withholding the statutory Federal Allocation due to the state’s local governments since 2021.

Following the development, the DSS invited Adedayo for interrogation and when he turned up for the invitation on Friday, he was asked to respond to the petition submitted to the Command by the state government.

It was gathered that part of the petition was that Adedayo was instigating widespread acts of public disturbance and chaos in Ijebu East local government.

The embattled council boss had denied the allegation of instigating acts of public disturbance but the State Security Service decided to detain him due to his refusal to withdraw the allegation leveled against Gov Abiodun.

His incarceration led to various groups and Human rights Lawyer, Femi Falana calling for his release.

Three die as car plunges into Omo river in Ogun

Three persons were confirmed dead while one other sustained injuries when a Toyota Sienna car plunged into the Omo river around Area J4 on the Sagamu-Benin expressway on Saturday.

Mrs Florence Okpe, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta on Saturday.

“The accident occurred around 11:55 a.m, and the suspected cause of the crash was excessive speed and loss of control which made the vehicle to plunge into the river.

“The vehicle marked APP 830 HX was coming from Benin and heading to Lagos,” she added.

Okpe added that three male adults were found dead while one person sustained injuries in the lone vehicle accident.

The FRSC spokesperson explained that the injured victim was taken to Hope Clinic J4 in the Ijebu-East local government area of the state.

”Bodies of those dead were deposited at the State General Hospital morgue in Ijebu-Ode,” she said.

Okpe quoted the State Sector Commander of FRSC, Anthony Uga, as describing the crash as avoidable if caution was considered.

The sector commander said speed limit violation by motorists, especially the commercial vehicle drivers on that route, as the cause
    of several road traffic crashes.

“In this case however, the FRSC sector commander appreciated the efforts of local divers for the rescue operation.

”We also sympathise with the families of the victims, just as we advise them to contact the FRSC Ogbere outpost for more information about the crash,” Okpe said.

  • Ogun: JAAC members deny missing LG allocation

Ogun: JAAC members deny missing LG allocation

Members of the Joint Account and Allocation Committee in Ogun have denied the allegation of fund diversion against the state government.

Speaking at the House of Assembly on Friday in Abeokuta, they maintained that every fund approved by the committee passed through the various Local Government Council Accounts.

Recalled that the assembly on Thursday directed the Accountant General of the state, Mr Babatunde Aregbesola and other JAAC committee members to appear before it on Friday.

The assembly said this was for clarifications over allegation of LG fund diversion against Gov. Dapo Abiodun-led administration.

Suspended chairman of Ijebu East Local Government, Mr Wale Adedayo, had alleged that local government areas in the state had not received any allocation from the state since 2021.

Adedayo, who was suspended by seven councillors in the council area on Thursday, had in a letter written to the national leader of the party and former Governor, Olusegun Osoba, begging him to convince the governor to release monies meant for council areas.

He also wrote a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), calling on the anti-graft agency to investigate all allegations levelled against the state government as regards LG allocations.

JAAC members, however, argued that the process of fund administration for JAAC took place monthly at a meeting where all first line charges were aggregated among LG chairmen and payment made.

The process of fund administration included primary school teachers’ salaries, LG pension, traditional council, leave bonus and check-off dues of labour unions.

According to them, there are instances when the state government had to augment shortfall to allow all the local governments to take care of all their first line charges.

Members of the committee, who appeared before the assembly on the enquiry over the allegation of fund diversion, included the Accountant General, Mr Tunde Aregbesola, and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr Rotimi Akinlesi.

Others are the Chairman, Association of Local Government Chairmen and Chairman, Ijebu Ode Local Government, Tunde Emiola Gazal; Chairman, Association of Local Government Pensioners, Pastor Benedict Ademoye; and representatives of SUBEB, among others.

Responding, the Speaker, Mr Olakunle Oluomo, explained that the Evidence Act did not allow for response to speculations, pointing out that the assembly was yet to receive formal petition from any quarter in respect of the allegations.

He assured that when such petition was received, the assembly would act on it immediately.

Oluomo urged the JAAC team to provide all relevant documents in respect of their presentation to the assembly for further legislative actions.
