  • Ohanaeze Ndigbo blasts Northern group for declaring IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu wanted

Ohanaeze Ndigbo blasts Northern group for declaring IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu wanted

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has slammed the Northern groups for placing a bounty on Nnamdi Kanu’s whereabouts.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) had reported that 17 Northern groups under the aegis of Northern Consensus Movement (NCM) on Thursday declared Kanu wanted over the killings and destruction of properties owned by Northerners in the Southeast.

The President of the group, Dr Auwal Abdullahi, while addressing a press conference, also placed a N100m bounty on Kanu.

Reacting, Ohanaeze Ndigbo in a statement by its Secretary-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro on Friday, faulted the move and accused the warring factions in the leadership of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders and Islamic terror organizations of being behind the killings and destruction of properties in the southeast region.

The group called on the Northern groups to place their N100 million bounty on Miyetti Allah and the slain Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau’s successor whom it alleged had foisted heavy havoc on the citizens.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, however, dismissed the claim that northerners are being killed in the southeast, maintaining that there had not been any killing of northerners recorded anywhere in the region as it further accused the northern groups of embarking on a mission to thwart the ambition of the southeast zone in producing President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor come 2023.

The Igbo organization said, “we would not want to join issues with faceless groups that are not known in the north but in as much as that they are making some attempts to cause crisis in the country by ensuring that the groups not only placing a bounty on Nnamdi Kanu over alleged killings, they are out to escalate the tension in the country.

“For the purpose of record and from the last time, there had not been any killing, except the accidental killing of Ahmed Gulak in Owerri. There had not been killing recorded anywhere in the southeast about northern people except some nefarious activities of unknown gunmen and killer Fulani herdsmen who had been attacking police stations and government facilities and killing both Igbos and indigenes from other parts of the country.

Place N100m bounty on bandits, Boko Haram, not Nnamdi Kanu – Omokri to Northern groups
“We want to tell the groups being sponsored by some northern presidential aspirants to place the bounty on the new leader of Boko Haram terrorist group, that had just emerged after the death of Shekau. Nnamdi Kanu has an address in London or in Germany where his headquarters of IPOB is. There is no need of searching for Kanu. He is not in Nigeria, he has an address in London as a British citizen. They should just use the N100 million bounty given to them by northern politicians, who are trying to destabilize the southeast to have easy root for the 2023 presidential ticket of major political parties in Nigeria, especially of the PDP.

“They should place the bounty on Shekau’s successor who has no address, who is living in the forest, the terrorist group that took arms against the government for the last six years. They should not cry more than the bereaved, we will take care of the southeast and ensure normalcy returns. As far as we are concerned, that bounty is inconsequential and political. It is not necessary, only a means to continue to heat up tension in the polity”.

Insecurity: Arrest Sheikh Gumi now, Ohanaeze urges security operatives

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, OYC, has called for the immediate arrest of Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, the cleric currently negotiating with bandits in the Northern part of the country.

Gumi drew the ire of the apex Igbo group following his interview with BBC Pidgin, where he was reported to have compared late Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu with the bandits.

Ojukwu led Ndigbo to the Nigeria/Biafra civil war which lasted for three years, claiming millions of lives, and Gumi now believes Ojukwu committed the same offence like the bandits.

In his reaction, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, the OYC President-General, said he was surprised that Gumi was still walking the streets a free man.

He said despite glaring evidence that Gumi was in a deep romance with terrorists, the security agencies had looked the other way while things worsened in the country.

OYC in a statement made available to newsmen said, “There is no doubt that Nigeria is at a crossroads in its journey to nationhood. Never in the history of the country has it witnessed such orge of violence and criminality being perpetrated by terrorists hiding under different nomenclatures.

“However, more worrisome is the fact that the chief mobilizer and the spokesman of the terrorists, Sheikh Gumi has been left to be walking freely despite clear evidence that he was part of Nigeria’s security problems.

“Ranging from his claims that bandits are not terrorists, to his mindless comparison of bandits with the IPOB and now Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu, it is clear that Gumi has turned the chief spokesman of terrorists and should be arrested and prosecuted.

“He did not start today as his track record shows that he was part of those that laid the foundation to what we are seeing today; his divisive and inciting messages are not new in the country. It is now time for security agencies to do the needful as this is the only way to end the current mindless killing and kidnapping of Nigerians.”

Nnabuike, also in the statement, took a swipe at Kogi West Senator, Smart Adeyemi over his tirade against Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State last week.

While describing Adeyemi as a shame and a bad image of the current Senate, Okwu urged Ikpeazu to ignore “a man who got to the Senate not by the people’s vote but violence and intimidation of voters.

“Smart Adeyemi is no doubt a disgrace to the journalism profession and the National Assembly, as we wonder how such a man with an unsound mind rose to the apex leadership of the revered union.

“We ask Governor Ikpeazu not to be distracted or allow himself to descend to the level of such a man who has no form of dignity.”

  • Obiozor and the challenge of diplomacy in the Igbo wars 4 – Chido Nwakanma

Obiozor and the challenge of diplomacy in the Igbo wars 4 – Chido Nwakanma

    By Chido Nwakanma

Diplomacy is the foremost challenge before the diplomat who assumed office on 9 January as helmsman of the Igbo ship called Ohanaeze. It is fortuitous that Prof George Obiozor is a diplomat by training, vocation, and experience. He would need all the skills of that profession to navigate the many fights and wars of the Igbo nation in the days ahead.

The Public Sphere has chronicled the Igbo Wars of culture and strategy since 2018. It is a struggle for the soul of a people and where, why, when, and how they should go.

First, congratulations are due to Prof George Obiozor, President General and Chief Okey Emuchay, Secretary General, who will run Ohanaeze Ndigbo through some of the most interesting years ahead of the Igbo. He stands tall on face value as one of the most suitable by pedigree to run the affairs of Ndigbo.

Obiozor was director-general of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs. He represented Nigeria as ambassador to Cyprus, Israel, and the United States. He is articulate, well-schooled and educated, and has put down his thoughts in publications as a resourceful academic. He won an election to the position of President General of Ohanaeze on 9 January 2021.

Prof Obiozor, Georgi Mgbo to his friends, must “conduct negotiations between representatives of states or groups to influence the decisions and conduct” of both Ndigbo and the other groups with which the Igbo must relate in Nigeria. The task calls for the alternate definition of diplomacy as “skill in handling affairs without arousing hostility”.

Here is the rub. Prof Obiozor’s path to the headship of Ohanaeze did not show this quality. It has aroused significant hostility by several groups within the Oha. The World Igbo Summit Group and two others have put down their objections in writing while others pursue litigation.

In contrast, Obiozor has the support of Ndi Eze na Ndi Ochichi being government officials across party lines and across the country. There is thus a temptation and perception that he and his team are dismissive of criticisms about the conduct of the elections.
However, little leaks sink the mightiest ships.

As the report in the Vanguard the next day captured it, “After weeks of controversies, former Nigeria Ambassador to the United States, Professor George Obiozor yesterday emerged as the new President-General of Ohanaeze, succeeding John Nnia Nwodo.” The controversies included the election of another candidate by a splinter group. Obiozor polled 304 votes to defeat Chief Valentine Oparaocha who scored 15 votes and Chief Uju Savior Okoro who had three votes.

The eventual contenders with Obiozor were unknown in the race up until that Sunday. The real contestants protested the procedure while Goddy Uwazurike stood down at the last minute. At the end, it sounded like the “consensus” candidature cooked for Obiozor in November 2020 by Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and Governor Hope Uzodinma.

To Obiozor’s credit, governors of the South East have pledged their support and commitment. His predecessor Nnia Nwodo must take both the credit and the blame for raising the profile of Ohanaeze Ndigbo so much that the election remains topical among various Igbo groups home and abroad. The consensus seems to be that a good man emerged through a flawed process.
Many have called for giving Obiozor time to show that he is truly a diplomat capable of fixing the fissures in Igbo land as foundation for tackling relationships with other groups. The PG (who designed such incongruous titles?) has outlined his agenda for his tenure. It is exciting but has also drawn significant hostility.

Before delving into it, it helps to appreciate Obiozor’s philosophy. His favourite statement cited in his recently updated Wikipedia page states: “Politics is a concentric series of conspiracies in which the last party to conspire emerges victorious.”

You can infer that Obiozor is for realpolitik, defined as “a system of politics or principles based on practical rather than moral or ideological considerations”.

The “last party to conspire” emerged victorious and Obiozor is president of Ohanaeze. I call on the other groups and all those raising issues about the elections to sheathe their swords. We should focus on chasing and killing the snake on our rafter. Obiozor and his team should reach out to the aggrieved as the call of leadership and inclusiveness.

The Ohanaeze president has outlined a four-point agenda that should engage Ndigbo. His manifesto identifies security, economy, education, and Biafra as issues of primacy for Ndigbo today and tomorrow. He is right on the money.

His candour on Biafra is refreshing. “The Igbo nation is not at war with the rest of the country and there is nothing that demands our separate existence from Nigeria.”

There are many young persons who would contest this assertion, in which case it is finally time for the referendum on issues in contention in the land.

Prof Obiozor envisions Igbo unity with a bond that surpasses what existed with the Igbo State Union. Awesome. “Many things unite us, but we have given few things that divide us priority. That is our main problem and that can also change.”

Obiozor: “The Igbo dilemma in Nigeria has finally come home at last and we must take critical, even delicate decisions and those problems need pragmatic solutions and quickly too. And the time requires careful and delicate skilled manager in the relationships between Ndigbo among themselves and other Nigerian nationalities especially the national power elites.

This requires a mature and experienced person with a capacity to build enough consensus among diversities of opinions and to define and fiercely but reasonably defend the interest of Ndigbo.”

Thou sayest. The first task of the Ohanaeze team should therefore be to build internal consensus, win over every group, fringe or mainstream, and get everyone to sing from the same page of the Igbo hymn book. Igbos need to cement relationships internally as well as with their neighbours of the South-South before any concerns with the rest of Nigeria.

BREAKING: Ex-ambassador, Obiozor elected President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo

Former Nigerian ambassador to the United States, Israel, and Cyprus, Prof. George Obiozor, has emerged President General of the Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Polling a total 304 votes, Obiozor emerged in an election held at Dan Anyim stadium in Owerri, the Imo state capital, on Sunday.

He’s to replace Chief Nnia Nwodo.

George Obiozor, a Professor of Political Science, is a native of Awo-Omamma in Imo state.

However, other candidates for the position of the President General boycotted the election.

Meanwhile, the Board of Trustee member representing Rivers State at Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr Jackson Omenazu, who spoke to newsmen at the venue of the election, declared the process that brought Obiozor to power as fraudulent.

Ohanaeze condemns attempt to pit Yoruba against Igbo in Lagos

The apex Igbo socio-cultural and political body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has dissociated itself from inciting comments made by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, over the ongoing carnage in Lagos State.

President General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nnia Nwodo, said this on Thursday in a statement titled, ‘#EndSARS: Alleged destruction of Yoruba economic assets, the Ohanaeze position’.

He said, “We wish to state that Ohanaeze is also outraged by the vituperative and inciting outrage of the leader of IPOB on the #EndSARS activities in Lagos and disassociate the body completely from them.”

The organisation said the statement was in response to a press statement earlier issued by a pan-Yoruba group, the Apapo O’Odua Koya on the ongoing youth uprising in Nigeria particularly in Lagos as it relates to Ndigbo youths.

Nwodo said, “We find the statement disheartening, not necessarily because of the untruth in its sentiment, but that it’s obviously being engineered and targeted at the age long good relationship between the Igbo and the Yoruba.

“Ohanaeze strongly believes that the press statement is craftily drafted showing a skillful use of underhand tactics to achieve a set goal, which in this case is to set Yoruba against Ndigbo.

“We are ready to vehemently resist this in our time, knowing the historical affinity of these two great ethnic groups dating back to the days of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe through to the famous handshake across the Niger propagated by our iconic leader Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu- Ojukwu.

“This spontaneous relationship built by our forefathers over the years has been strengthened in the last three years by the political emancipation movement, being propelled by the Southern and Middle Belt Leadership Forum made up of four ethno-political bodies of Ndigbo, in the South East, Afenifere in the South West, PANDEF in the South-South, Adenomere and the Middle Belt Forum in the North Central Nigeria.

“Ohanaeze feels based on intelligence available to it that the motive of this disturbing statement is not only to overtake the mileage covered by this group in setting their people free from the hegemonic bondage but to ensure its destruction.

“Ndigbo are focused and unequivocal about what they want in a contemporary Nigeria as already articulated in the terms of engagement of this group which is to restructure Nigeria for a true federal system where justice and equity will reign.

“We therefore wish to refute any position being ascribed to Ndigbo even if such position is being adduced by an Igbo that is not within the realm of the struggle to free Nigeria as encapsulated in the terms of agreement of these ethnic nationalities.”

Ohanaeze denied allegations that the Igbo youth involvement in Lagos #EndSARS protest was part of a grand design to destroy Yoruba economy.

2023: Ohanaeze tackles Mamman Daura, insists on zoning

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has insisted that it is the turn of the South, particularly Ndigbo to produce the president in 2023.

The organization warned that equity should not be sacrificed on the altar of parochialism since it was the rotation sentiment that produced the present incumbent.

Ohanaeze was reacting to Mamman Daura”s assertion that 2023 presidency should not be based on turn by turn but on competence.

Chief Emeka Attamah, the media aide to the president general of Ohanaeze, Chief Nnia Nwodo who spoke on behalf of Ohanaeze insisted: “All we know is that it is the turn of the south where we have abundant competent individuals who can steer the ship of this country, particularly among Ndigbo.”

He reminded that one of the reasons the ganged up and removed Goodluck Jonathan was on the allegation of violating the rotation principle.

He said: ” Now that it is the turn of the south they don’t see it in that context anymore.

“The statement by Mamman Daura is, to say the least, selfserving. He should’ve said this before the 2019 elections. They ganged up to push President Jonathan aside because they believed it was the turn of the North to produce the President .

” Having benefited enormously from his nephew being the President, he now wants it jettisoned because it is the turn of the South.

“Talking about competence or most qualified, was President Buhari the most qualified Nigerian when he ascended the presidency ? Has he proved to be the most competent ?

” Are the service chiefs the most competent among their colleagues to warrant their being retained beyond their tenure ? Now that it is the turn of the South, precisely South East, he is mouthing most qualified and competent.

” Equity is a constant flagship for peace and good governance. Without it, there will be continued agitation and crisis.

” At his age, Mamman Daura should stand for equity and fairness. Moreover, his stand goes against the grain of the nation’s constitution which enshrines equality for all peoples and sections of the country.”

  • Finally, Ohanaeze, IPOB sheathe swords, agree to work together

Finally, Ohanaeze, IPOB sheathe swords, agree to work together

Pan Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and the separatist Igbo group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have mended fence with a promise to work together for the common good of the Igbo people.

Both groups met yesterday at the home of the first Republic Aviation Minister, Chief Mbazuluike Amechi, in Ukpor, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Both groups have been at logger head recently, with the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, calling on his members to attack the leader of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr Nnia Nwodo, anywhere he was seen.

But Amechi, who met with the group, described the rivalry as unnecessary as they were both working for the good of the Igbo people.

“I summoned the two bodies to express my displeasure with what I have been reading in the newspapers about Kanu giving orders for the stoning of Chief Nwodo.

“I’m happy that even before this peace meeting, Kanu has retracted the statement. We, therefore, appeal to Nwodo to accept the retraction and get it off his mind as IPOB has agreed to work with them.

“The two bodies must realise that it is the same battle they are fighting, which is marginalisation, killings and denial of federal government to develop South-east and Igbo land in general,” he stated.

IPOB, represented by Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to Kanu, said he was at the meeting with the blessings and instructions of his client, just as he thanked Amaechi, who he said was not a stranger to what he was doing having been once declared a terrorist.

Also, speaking on behalf of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Anambra State President of the body, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, said the body endorsed all that were contained in the communique.

He said: “Those who thought our fences are fallen will know that the fences are much stronger than they thought.”

  • Amnesty for terrorists, call for breakup- MASSOB urges Ohanaeze

Amnesty for terrorists, call for breakup- MASSOB urges Ohanaeze

The Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and Ohanaeze Ndigbo have warned the Federal Government that creating an agency for ex-terrorists as proposed by some lawmakers is an attempt to disintegrate Nigeria.

The groups said incentivising terrorists through an agency would mean an approval of the killings, maiming and kidnapping of Nigerians by the group.

The leaders of the zones viewed the development as capable of compounding insecurity and dividing the country, while some youths saw the development a step to fast-track the realisation of a Biafra republic.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, which accused the Federal Government of promoting ‘divisive tendencies” by its body language to insecurity caused by Boko Haram insurgents, insisted that granting amnesty to the group would encourage other self-determination groups to become armed.

The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, said the group does not believe that the captured Boko Haram members truly repented, and he added that certain forces beyond such members might have forced them into submission.

Nwodo said, “The president continues to confirm that he shares some ideological affinity with Boko Haram. How can you offer amnesty to captured aggressors whose remorse is induced by hopelessness rather than genuine change of mind?

“How can you categorise armless IPOB as terrorists and give amnesty to unrepentant aggressors? This duplicity of standards and undisguised bias betray his oath of office and deepens our divide in the country.

“If Boko Haram is granted amnesty, other self-determination groups are being indirectly encouraged to become armed and militant.”

The Executive Director, Civil Liberties Organisation, Ibuchukwu Ezike, agreed with Ohanaeze, stating that captured Boko Haram members had not shown remorse or surrendered willingly to earn amnesty.

“When somebody truly repents of his actions and you are giving amnesty to him or her, it is acceptable. It is not acceptable when somebody continues to inflict pains on the people and commits all kinds of evil against the society and you want amnesty granted to such a person.

“Again when somebody is motivated to take an action against the state or the people, there is something that you can say is making the person to take up arms against the state and you will begin to talk of doing something to assuage his anger. In this case, nobody has told us why they took up arms. They set homes and communities on fire without justification and have made millions of widows in the society as well as made several people live in asylum,” he said.

MASSOB leader, Uchenna Madu, also said that the ploys by the Federal Government to treat the Fulanis, Boko Haram members and the criminal bandits operating in core northern states as “beloved children of Arewa must lead to break up Nigeria.”

He said: “The move to introduce the bill for the establishment of a national agency for repentant Boko Haram terrorists by Moslem-dominated Senate of Nigeria is another grand plot of Islamic northern caliphate to transfer more Boko Haram trained terrorists with their terrorist activities to southern part of Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, the Niger Delta Self-Determination Movement (NDSDM) has called on governors of the South-South region to immediately set up a regional security network that could aid the “overstretched” established security agencies in combating insecurity across the Niger Delta region.

In a letter addressed to the chairman, South-South Governors’ forum, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, NDSDM said a regional security network had become imperative considering attacks on the Niger Delta by herdsmen.

Nigeria failing, we need new constitution – Nwodo

President General of the pan-Igbo sociocultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nnia Nwodo, yesterday raised the alarm over the state of affairs in Nigeria.

He declared that except President Muhammadu Buhari convokes a national conference of ethnic nationalities to fashion out a new constitution, the nation will become a failed state.

Nwodo, who made the assertion in his address during the brief stopover of the remains of Justice Eze Ozobu, former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, at the Ohanaeze Secretariat, Enugu State, also decried the prevailing dearth of political culture and constitutionalism whereby “legislators abandon their party in the currency of their tenure and in violation of extant court decisions the Attorney General goes to sleep.

“Nigeria is failing as a state that guarantees equal treatment for all her people. Nigeria is failing as a state that can conduct transparent elections. Nigeria is failing economically. We need a National Conference to throw away the Constitution imposed on us and to restructure our political system. Otherwise, we should agree to disagree and go our separate way.

“If you are a Fulani herdsman, you can carry firearms without license. If you are a Hisba police in Kano, you can carry firearms without reproach. If you belong to the Civilian Joint Task Force in the Northeast, you can carry firearms.

“If you are a Northern Fulani, you can exceed your term of office as Chief of Army Staff or Chief of Air Staff in violation of our establishment rules and laws.

“If you are in Amotekun or Neighbourhood Watch in the Middle Belt or South Eastern Nigeria, the Attorney-General will turn himself into a court and declare it illegal for you to operate let alone carry firearms.

“If you are from the Southeast and you are elected a governor, the Supreme Court can reallocate votes and take away your victory even when your opponent who was voted for the same day as the state legislators could not win a single state Assembly seat for his party,” he lamented

Nwodo said that the most important reason for the weeklong activities in remembrance of Hon. Justice, Igwe Eze Ozobu was to dramatize his positive attributes in the hope that the living will try to emulate him.

“For me, Justice Eze Ozobu’s life was a lesson in many ways. He thought us the ‘can do spirit’. At the time he went to the United Kingdom to study law, very few of his contemporaries could do it. He had the choice of settling to a teaching career, a civil service position. Either would in the colonial era have guaranteed him food on the table and a comfortable family.

“But No! Not near Chief. He seems to have imbibed the motto of the Brigade of guards in the UK who protect the Queen of England. The motto declares: ‘He who Dares, Wins’”.

  • FG frustrating Igbo industrialists – Ohanaeze

Ohaneze Ndigbo, Anambra state chapter, has expressed displeasure over the ongoing travail being experienced by Igbo industrialists in the country.

The pan-Igbo social-cultural organization called on the federal government to stop policies targeted at frustrating industrialists from the region.

President of the body, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, spoke at his Etti-Nanka country home in Orumba South local government area of the state during a get together party organized by the organization’s leadership.

He specifically mentioned Air Peace boss, Barr. Allen Onyema, Chief Chukwumma Innocent, Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, Clement Ibeto and host of others, describing government action as a way of de-industrialising the eastern Nigeria.

He wondered why the industrialists who have contributed immensely to the increase in the Gross Domestic Product of the country would continue to suffer harassment and intimidation from the government.

He said, “These are patriotic and selfless industrialists who have projected the image of Nigeria on the global industrial map and are providing mass employment for Nigerian youths.

“What Chief Chukwumma Innocent and Barr. Allen Onyema, particularly, has accomplished so far, no indigenous industrialist in Nigeria has been able to do for the development of the country.

“If Innoson Motors were owned by other regional businessmen, no frustration, harassment and intimidation would have come up.”

Okeke-Ogene blamed the ongoing persecution of their sons in different quarters on what he described as politics of appeasement and sabotage by those who did not want Igbo voice to be heard in the affairs of Nigeria.

“We call on those involved directly or indirectly in the orchestrated campaign to frustrate our industrious sons to desist from their evil act before it is too late,” he stressed.

The Ohaneze boss however commend governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state for his commitment to the welfare of Ohaneze Ndigbo in his state.
