  • Visa on arrival ploy by FG to bring back RUGA – Ohanaeze

…Condemns IPOB’s attack on Amaechi in Spain

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation Ohanaeze Ndigbo has faulted Federal Government’s plan to grant visas to foreigners on arrival into Nigeria. It said the move which “amounts to throwing the nation’s borders open to “foreigners with questionable characters” showed that the Federal Government was “still bent on implementing Rural Grazing Area (RUGA).”

The group, in a communique in Enugu, also claimed that the Federal Government wanted to use the “visa on arrival” policy to give advantage to a particular part of the country during future elections.

It called on the Federal Government to shelve the policy because it could aggravate the security challenges facing the country.

Ohanaeze’s position on the visa on arrival policy came hours after the Senate on Tuesday rejected its immediate implementation and invited Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola to explain its “technical, logistics, legal and constitutional issues.”

Some of the major issues the group listed at the end of its meeting in Enugu as not being in the interest of the nation are the siting of the nation’s military institutions only in the Northern part of the country as well as the warehousing of military armaments and strategic units also in the North.

Others are the call by the Chief Justice of Nigeria for amendment to the 1999 Constitution to include Sharia law; Federal Government’s push for a $30 billion loan; heavy presence of security men at checkpoints in the Southern part of the country and the recent attack on Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Spain.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo alleged in the communiqué by the Special Adviser to the President-General of the organisation,Chief Emeka Attamah, that the siting of military institutions in the North was a deliberate move to have people from a particular ethnic group and religion as heads of security forces and agencies.

The group said the action was contrary to the provisions of extant laws which stipulated that the establishment of such institutions must be balanced.

On the $30 billion loan now being debated by the National Assembly, Ohanaeze Ndigbo warned that generations unborn would pay dearly for the “reckless borrowing” of current leaders if not jettisoned.

Ohanaeze asked that the many checkpoints be dismantled because security agencies used them to extort and humiliate a section of the country.

The communiqué reads: ” Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has, in the interest of the security of Nigeria, called on the Federal Government to rescind its decision to throw open the borders of the country to immigrants without visas.

“The National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, in Enugu, decried the unprecedented national decision that would occasion massive entry of foreigners, some with questionable characters into the country.

“NEC noted that such unchecked and unregulated influx into the country will further aggravate the security challenges facing the country.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo states that the action tends to give credence to the suspicion that the Federal Government is still bent on implementing the RUGA programme and also to give a particular ethnic group undue advantage in subsequent elections in the country.

“NEC wonders why the Federal Government would take such an inimical decision without any corresponding offer to Nigerians into the benefitting countries.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo feels that the security and economic fallouts from the said free entry of foreigners would further aggravate the security threat to the country beyond what is being experienced at the moment and called for a rethink.

“NEC also condemned the selective and parochial siting of military universities as well as other universities and higher institutions entirely in the North to the total neglect of the Southern part of the country.

“Its holds that the warped decision is synonymous with the blatant and insensitive decision of the present administration to have people from a particular ethnic group and religion as the heads of all security forces and agencies in the country notwithstanding their ages and the fact that they should have been retired to give way to younger officers.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo observed that this action of the Federal Government negates the constitutional provisions of the country that provides equitable representation and siting of amenities throughout the country in accordance with the federal character of the country.

“NEC recalls that there has been a deliberate Federal Government policy to concentrate all military armaments and strategic units in the North with the South completely barren of such military presence except checkpoints that have metamorphosed into toll gates for the exploitation of Ndigbo and their Southern neighbours.

“The group urges the military authorities to dismantle all the checkpoints along the roads in Igbo land, especially during this period of Yuletide with the attendant mass movement of Ndigbo.

“It also condemns the recent $30 billion loan being taken by the Federal Government which will certainly add to the woes of Nigerians, especially in a situation where no sincere and transparent efforts have been made to arrest the scourge of corruption to guarantee its effective utilization in the interest of the masses.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo also condemns the recent call by the Chief Justice of Nigeria for an amendment to the constitution to include Sharia law at the apex court. It believes that Nigeria, being a federation, is a secular state and cannot have any religion imposed on the people.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo however feels that if there is need for any such amendment, it should be extended to other religions, including Christianity and traditionalists, to ensure equity.

“ The group also condemns in its entirely, the attempted attack on a prominent Igbo son, Chief Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, the Minister of Transport, who was allegedly harassed by members of IPOB in Spain recently.

“Ohanaeze thinks that the belligerent approach by IPOB towards the struggle for the actualization of a sovereign state of Biafra is giving it a bad image and coloration.”

  • Ohanaeze clears air on Nwodo’s tenure, blasts Nnamdi Kanu for causing ‘confusion’

Ohanaeze clears air on Nwodo’s tenure, blasts Nnamdi Kanu for causing ‘confusion’

The tenure of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership will end in January 2021, not 2020, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation said on Sunday.

It warned mischief makers against stampeding the executive.

The organisation faulted those it said were “going about claiming that the national election of Ohanaeze Ndigbo would hold in January 2020”.

It warned them to desist from such propaganda.

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, in a radio broadcast on Saturday evening, said the tenure of Ohanaeze President-General Nnia Nwodo would end on December 31.

Nwodo assumed office in January 2017.

Kanu said in the broadcast that some people from the marginalised parts of the country, who are supposed to be supporting the Biafran cause, are rather fighting against it.

Such people, he said, include some leaders of Igbo groups and some governors from the South.

He said the agitation for Biafra will continue as Biafra and Nigeria are not meant to be together.

Kanu ended his address by stating that Nwodo will no longer be the leader of Ohanaeze after December 31.

But Ohanaeze deputy spokesman Chuks Ibegbu noted in a statement that the Nwodo-led executive won’t complete their term until January 2021.

He accused “desperadoes” and those who wish to use the office for personal gain as propagating the rumour.

According to him, when the tenure of the present Ohanaeze executive is due to end, the world would be told.

Ibegbu noted that for now, the Nwodo-led executive was trying to reposition Ndigbo within the Nigerian polity.

Many prominent Igbo citizens from Imo State are said to have started jostling to succeed him.

Those jostling are saying, contrary to the Ohanaeze executive’s claim, that Ohanaeze constitution prescribe three-year tenure which is rotated alphabetically among the five Southeast states and the Igbo speaking parts of Delta and River states.

With Abia, Anambra, Delta, Ebonyi and Enugu having produced Ohanaeze presidents, it is Imo’s turn.

Those said to be interested in the position from Imo are former Nigerian Ambassador to the United States Prof. George Obiozor; former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim; policy consultant Dr Chris Asoluka; former Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Dr Joe Nwaogu, among others.

Nwodo served as Minister of Civil Aviation during the second republic under Shehu Shagari.

He served as Minister of Information and Culture under the Abdulsalami Abubakar military administration.

In 2017, Nwodo won an election that declared him the ninth President-General of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a socio-cultural organisation that represents Igbo speaking community, and protects the rights and interests of the Igbo around the world.

He won with 242 votes. His opponent, former Anambra State University of Technology Vice-Chancellor Prof. Chiweyete Ejike, had 13 votes.

  • Biafra: Ohanaeze Ndigbo speaks on fresh court order to arrest Nnamdi Kanu

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Friday, warned of dire consequences over the bench warrant issued against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Justice Binta Nyako issued the order following Kanu’s continuous absence from court.

But reacting through a statement signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, President General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide and Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, Secretary General, the apex Igbo organization said such order would spell doom.

The Ohanaeze said it the arrest order with “rude Shock and disbelief, and weighing the implications, such action may destabilize the fragile peace that has returned to Southern Nigeria, especially Southeast and South/South after the ugly but sad experience(s) witnessed during his first arrest, and subsequently the untimely death of innocent Igbo Youths and women that characterized his detention.”

They, however, urged the IPOB to “resist any temptation of allowing Nnamdi Kanu to return to Nigeria, as the healing process of those slaughtered during the first arrest and python Dance has not been completed.

There’s no need to escalate the tension already established in the Southeast over the menace of herdsmen ravaging some parts of igbo land; there’s no need to compound our loss by allowing Nnamdi Kanu return now until Igbo Christian and Traditional leaders intervene in the process.

We are pleading With President Buhari as the father of the Nation to grant Presidential Pardon to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as a way to show compassion to Ndigbo. We are aware of the Presidential release of over 500 inmates of suspected Boko Haram detainees in Kano Prisons.

Presidential Pardon to all Biafra agitators, including Nnamdi Kanu will save a lot of Billions of Naira that would’ve been used for peacekeeping, in the imminent collapse of peace and civil disturbances that will follow immediately if he’s re-arrested.

Such billions can be used on alternative Road Projects in southeast, because Aba, Port Harcourt, Asaba, Abakiliki, Enugu, Onitsha, Nnewi and Owerri may become ungovernable as we witnessed during the last arrest of Nnamdi Kanu.”

They further stated that “there’s better time re-unite every part Nigeria than now; Carrot and Stick method of late President Yar’adua should be adopted in handling the delicate case of Nnamdi Kanu; his re-arrest order is an ill wind that will blow no one no any good.”

  • Afenifere, Ohanaeze, Northern Elders, Niger Delta Forum reject Buhari’s re-election

The Forum of Nigerian Leaders and Elders has rejected the poll that reelected President Muhammadu Buhari for another four years on February 23, 2019.

The Forum, made up of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, Northern Elders Forum, Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Middle Belt Forum, made its position known in a statement signed by their leaders, including Chief E. K. Clark, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Chief John Nwodo and Dr. Pogu Bitrus.

The statement said: “The Forum of Nigerian Leaders and Elders has reviewed major developments leading to the February 23rd Presidential elections, the management of the electoral process and the conduct and announced outcome of the elections.

“The Forum commends the statesmanship and commitment to the democratic process of the PDP candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, GCON, Wazirin Adamawa to exhaust the entire democratic process by challenging the results in the courts as provided for in the constitution. We see his decision as patriotic, responsible and ultimately the highest contribution to the democratic system. Some other person would by now be soaking ‘baboons and dogs in blood.”

The Forum said it observed that the election was fraught with massive irregularities and outright abuse of the electoral laws, the rules and regulations of the Independent National Electoral Commission as well as the failure of security forces to remain neutral and operate within the highest standards of their calling.

It said: “The Peace Accord was ridiculed by deliberate and open abuse of organs of the state, the denial of rights of many citizens to vote and blatant abuse of all the commitments made by the administration.

To decline to challenge obviously fictional figures, failures to respect key elements of the electoral process such as use of Smart Card Readers and preventing agents and observers access to all processes is to condone the massive setback which this election represents for the country.

“The outcome of the elections were clearly premeditated in the refusal of the President to sign the Electoral Act and the orchestrated suspension of Justice Walter Onoghen as the CJN shortly before the composition of Electoral Tribunals.

“The Forum calls on the judiciary to uphold the highest standards of integrity and commitment to its hallowed role by doing justice to the appeals that will come before it knowing that the eyes of the world would be on them.

We are aware that attempts are being made to demoralize and intimidate the judiciary to remove a conducive context for litigations. We remind the judiciary that it is the last defence of our democratic process.

“We appeal to all Nigerians to continue to show faith in the democratic process and remain law-abiding as we await the decisions of the judiciary on a matter that will ultimately determine the quality of our democratic process and the nature of the nation we all call our own.

“We recall that in endorsing the candidature of Atiku for the election, we did anchor our support on identifying a candidate among many good candidates we interacted with who can retool Nigeria to move on the path of development as a true federal entity ,the pattern of voting in areas where there were semi-free elections showed an overwhelming endorsements of our position by popular votes. And the polls results have shown further a badly divided polity that needs a unifier and not a divisive person as a leader.

“We insist Nigerians must stand firm and ensure that they are governed by a legitimate leadership.”

Presidential poll: Ohanaeze, MASSOB, IPOB reinstate support for Atiku/Obi ticket

The leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, pro-Biafra groups, including proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, Alaigbo Development Foundation, in Enugu State on Thursday reaffirmed the endorsement of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Mr. Peter Obi.

In a communique read by President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, it called on all Igbo registered voters both at home and outside Igbo homeland to come out en masse to vote for the Atiku/Obi ticket, stressing that Saturday’s election is a collective struggle for freedom and Ndigbo must be part of it.

Part of the communique reads, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide in collaboration with Alaigbo Development Foundation convened an emergency meeting of Igbo Stakeholders today, February 21, 2019 at Enugu, the aim of which is to exhaustively review recent events in the Nigerian polity as they relate to Ndigbo in particular, especially in the aftermath of the postponement of the Presidential and National Assembly elections in the country; and to express the solidarity and commitment of all Pan-Igbo groups and stakeholders to work together in view of the dire situation facing Nigeria in general and Ndigbo in particular.

All pan-Igbo organizations and stakeholders including IPOB and MASSOB commit to work together in the spirit of “onye-aghana-nwanneya” even in the face of existential threat confronting us as a people.

We agree that the irreducible minimum for Ndigbo that will be acceptable for their continued participation in the Nigerian enterprise will be a renegotiated and restructured Nigeria based on equality, equity and justice, for the component regions and individuals who will live under its authority.”

  • Ohanaeze can no longer tell Igbo youths who to vote – Moghalu

The presidential candidate of the Young People’s Party, Kingsley Moghalu, says the endorsement of a particular candidate by Ohanaeze Nd’Igbo is in vain.

Moghalu disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Awka.

He said youths in South East are wise enough to know who to vote for and not for Ohanaeze to compel them on what to do.

“We in the South East now know that our elders in Ohanaeze have been economical with the truth. They tell us what they want us to believe for reasons best known to them.

“This time around, the youth in the region have decided to vote for candidates that appeal to them in terms of development plans for the country,” he said.

Moghalu said he had done much for Nigerians to deserve their votes in February 23, poll.

“I did so much for the country while serving as the deputy governor of Central Bank of Nigeria.

“I introduced POS services; the ATM card was also my initiative, as well as Bank Verification Number for identification of accounts.

“I did all these to make the economy vibrant. It is also my contribution towards making ease of doing business possible.

“If given the chance, I will do more for the country to enable it join the league of developed countries where youths will be proud to stay and earn their living,” he said.

  • Ohanaeze Suspends Secretary General, Explains Why

Ohanaeze Suspends Secretary General, Explains Why

The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has suspended its Secretary-General, Uche Okwukwu, over alleged anti-organisation activities.

The National Executive Committee of the group said he was suspended over his alignment with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to factionalize the body which is in violation of the constitution of the pan Igbo socio-cultural organization.

Ohanaeze highest decision-making body, Imeobi, had endorsed Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Reacting to his suspension, Okwukwu was said to have step outside, made some calls and in less than five minutes, over 30 policemen with five Hilux vans stormed the meeting holding at the national secretariat, GRA Enugu to disperse the meeting.

It was gathered that parts of the allegations levelled against the suspended Secretary-General, Okwukwu was hinged on misconduct which includes; “That he organized a press conference in Nnewi, Anambra state, to contravene the position of Ohanaeze on the endorsement of Atiku, when he was part of the endorsement; making some spurious allegations against the leadership of the body, going to Aba, Abia State to endorse President Buhari in the name of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and joining APC leadership to factionalize the Igbo apex body.”

Ohanaeze stated that the action of Okwukwu smacks of betrayal of his people, noting that he was actually in the meeting at the Nike Lake Resort, where the debate on the endorsement took place and he did not raise objection, only for him to go and aligned with desperate politicians in APC, who had vowed to mortgage the future of Igbo nation for their personal gains.

Reacting the Secretary-General dismissed his suspension claiming that it was mere political rascality which can be obtained only in Student Union politics.

He said the meeting was not convened in line with the Ohanaeze’s constitution and therefore his suspension a nullity.

Okwukwu also disclosed that a body of Igbo leaders and concerned personalities have suspended the President-General Nnia Nwodo for his rascality and Prince Richard Ozobu has been appointed the President-General and chairman, disciplinary committee.

  • 2019 Presidential election: Okorocha reacts to Ohaneze’s endorsement of Atiku

…says group not a political party

Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha has described the endorsement of the Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar by the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohaneze Ndigbo as null and void and of no effect.

The Imo governor in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, insisted that “Ohaneze is a Socio-Cultural Organization and not a registered political party and there is no voting unit or polling booth called Ohaneze. So, its adoption of the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP should be seen as a folklore and should not give anybody concern”.

Okorocha also pointed out that the action of the Igbo group, has no electoral value, “the adoption is neither here nor there, since it has no electoral value. This is also not the first time Ohaneze has adopted a PDP Presidential Candidate. It did that in 2015, yet, PDP failed with its Presidential candidate, while APC won with its Presidential candidate.

And one would have expected Ohaneze to exercise caution this time following what happened in 2015. Indeed, the Organization should have done things differently especially when it remembers that all Igbos whether in PDP, APC, APGA, ADC or SDP are presumed to be members of Ohaneze”.

He noted further that, “not minding the adoption, President Muhammadu Buhari will win in the South-East and the general election proper. So, Igbos in APC should remain focused and not to make the adoption an issue, when it is not an issue in all ramifications”.

  • Elections: Ohanaeze denies plots to sabotage Buhari’s campaign in South East

Apex Igbo socio-cultural group Ohanaeze Ndigbo has dispelled insinuations that it intentionally fixed its Ime Obi meeting for January 24 to clash with President Muhammad Buhari’s visit to the Southeast.

The organisation said its attention was drawn to “a mendacious news item that Ohanaeze Ndigbo deliberately fixed their January 24 Ime Obi meeting to sabotage the campaign tour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate for the forthcoming election, President Buhari, to the Southeast.”

A release by the Special Adviser on Media & Publicity to the Ohanaeze Ndigbo President-General, Chief Emeka Attamah, frowned at such an “insidious allegation” which, he said, was outside the disposition and character of such a hallowed group.

Attamah stated that the truth of the matter was that the National Executive Council (NEC) ofOhanaeze Ndigbo had chosen the date for the meeting oblivious of the APC campaign time-table.

He explained that in deference to the Minister of Labour & Productivity, Dr. Chris Ngige and the Chairman of the Southeast Governors’ Forum and Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi, who both called his (Nwodo’s) attention to the clash, the group shifted the time for the meeting from 10am to 4pm on the same day at the instance of Dr Ngige.

Ohanaeze stated that they were aware of the extra cost implications due to those that would have gone but would now be accommodated in hotels but said it was to give all Igbo sons and daughters scheduled for the meeting opportunity to be there.

The statement added: “Although Ohanaeze Ndigbo is apolitical, it could aggregate the collective interest of Ndigbo for a candidate that answers to their wish and inclination but won’t but be dragged down to the level of vile politicking.”

It called on the purveyors of such petty innuendos to desist forthwith as Ohanaeze Ndigbounder the leadership of Chief Nwodo would remain sterling and unimpeachable and wishes Mr. President a joyous visit to the Southeast.

  • 2019: Ohanaeze’s endorsement of Atiku won’t affect my chances – Buhari

2019: Ohanaeze’s endorsement of Atiku won’t affect my chances – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the split within the Ohanaeze Igbo socio-cultural group over its reported endorsement of Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, did not surprise him.

Speaking at a meeting with a select group of South-east leaders on Friday, at the State House, Abuja, President Buhari said that the moment the so-called resolution was announced, he got calls from well-meaning leaders from the region asking him to disregard it as it was without any substance.

According to him, “From that moment, I knew that the resolution would not stand, and alas, there it was.”

President Buhari said that his party, the All Progressives Congress, got it right from the very beginning and that the major problems facing the country were mainly on security, corruption and the economy.

We have done so much. Given the chance, we will do more. Given every chance, we will tell Nigerians where we were in 2015 and what we have achieved up to now.

We will not get tired of speaking about the golden opportunity Nigeria lost during 16 years of the PDP. We earned money, which we didn’t use,” he said.

The state of infrastructure we inherited was terrible – no roads, the railway was killed and power. They lacked conscience because anybody with conscience will not do what they did. We will report them to Nigerians. Let anybody lead this country but not the PDP. They were so reckless with the resources of the country,” the President said.

If you ruin the economy, send your children abroad to get education, won’t they come back?” he asked, adding: “I said it 30 years ago that this is the only country we have. We must stay here and salvage it together.”

The leaders of the delegation, Emeka Ekwuosa, and the National Chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Chekwas Okorie, informed President Buhari that the Igbos and South-easterners generally understood the good things he was doing for Nigeria which they said, had unfortunately been misunderstood.

They promised to mobilise support for him in the south-east, saying that his re-election will be a national consensus.
