Ohaneze reacts to press statement issued on Tinubu’s Paris trip

Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, apex Igbo Socio-Cultural Organisation, says it has not issued a press statement over President Bola Tinubu’s private trip to Paris.

The group made the clarification in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr Alex Ogbonia.

“The reckless, harebrained and unguarded statement credited to one Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro was not from us; Isiguzoro is not even our member,” Ogbonia said in the statement made available to newsmen on Thursday in Enugu.

“The attention of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has been drawn to the news making the rounds to the effect that we are angry over Tinubu’s private trip to Paris.

“In some of the dailies, we are quoted as calling on President Bola Tinubu to f,llormally transmit power to the Vice president, Alhaji Kashim Shettima

“The group led by Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu is tempted to ignore the said press release by a mischief maker, but our silence may be misconstrued as validating the statement, hence the rebuttal.

“We want to dissociate Ohanaeze Ndigbo from Isiguzoro. He is not our Secretary General. That post is occupied by Mr Okey Emuchay.

“There is no gainsaying that some unreflective transgressors leech on the invaluable and hallowed name of Ohanaeze Ndigbo for narrow, perverse, illicit and pecuniary interests.

“It is, indeed, very curious that some editors of Nigerian dailies have been compromised to remain impervious to reason by turning a cheap lie into a media hype.

“Such editors domesticate negative propensities and convey flawed ethnic renditions.

“They indulge in cheap mendacious propaganda, clothing falsehood with elaborate wings and ultimately damaging the corporate image of their publications.

“There is hardly any Nigerian journalist who doesn’t know that the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo is Emuchay.

“We are incensed that anyone would wake up and issue a press release in the name of Ohanaeze Ndigbo with neither clearance nor consultations with the Igbo leadership. This is a clear case of sabotage to the Igbo nation.

“The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide neither contemplated a press release on Tinubu’s trip to Paris nor raise the issue of transmission of power to Shettima,” the statement declared.

  • Ohaneze lauds Afenifere for exonerating Iwuanyanwu

Ohaneze lauds Afenifere for exonerating Iwuanyanwu

The Apex Igbo Socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has lauded the Pan Yoruba Socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, for exonerating the Chairman, Council of Elders, Ohanaeze, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, over an alleged anti-Yoruba comment.

Afenifere disassociated itself from reports that it berated Iwuanyanwu, for allegedly calling the Yoruba people as “political rascals”.

The group stated this in a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Dr Alex Ogbonnia, in Enugu on Sunday.

It was reported that Iwuanyanwu had, while speaking in Awka, Anambra State capital, on Saturday at the event to mark the one year in office of Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, condemned individuals fuelling ethnic baiting in Lagos State.

Ogbonnia said Ohaneze commended the wisdom and maturity in which Afenifere, led by Chief Ayo Adebanjo, discountenance itself from the handiwork of mischief makers in an attempt to misrepresent the remarks by their patriotic, charismatic and detribalized leader, Iwuanyanwu.

He described wuanyanwu as a thoroughbred cosmopolitan, inter-etnic unifier with diverse national and international contacts; and a committed champion of the Nigerian unity.

Ogbonnia added that it was inconceivable for Iwuanyanwu to contemplate an uncomplimentary remark against any group in Nigeria.

He said: “The attention of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has been drawn to the Communiqué issued by the Afenifere at the end of its monthly meeting held at the residence of its leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, at Isanya-Ogbo, Ogun State, Nigeria.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo salutes the courage, tenacity, dedication, robustness and unwavering commitment to the ideals of pan-Nigerianism and the continued existence of Nigeria without caring whose ox is gored.

“We want to place on record that when the history of Nigerian travails is written, Chief Ayo Adebanjo will feature most copiously on the side of justice, nobility, honour, courage, character and integrity,” he said.

The publicity secretary added that Ohaneze applauded and aligned itself to the resolutions of Afenifere meeting in its entirety and prayed that God Almighty would continue to grant the group the wisdom and courage to always champion the cause of a better Nigeria.

“We are persuaded that the Afenifere resolutions as published are fundamental and foundational to the current socio-political crisis gnawing at the heart of Nigeria; and that those resolutions speak truth to the conscience of the powers that be in Nigeria.

“Ohanaeze supports those resolutions in all ramifications and join in calling on the President and Government of Nigeria to, as a matter of urgency, restore public confidence and hope in the Nigerian project,” he said.

He further added that Afenifere’s unflinching stand on the side of equity and justice had not come to them as a surprise given that the organization had at various times, stood for truth each time Nigeria finds herself at the cross-roads.

“We are not unmindful of Afenifere’s role in restoring democracy to Nigeria through the platform of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).

“The Afenifere leaders, with alliances across the national divide and the international bodies, launched the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which eventually gave birth to the Committee for Unity and Understanding (CUU), among others.

“We thank the Afenifere for telling the world the true position on the February 25 Presidential election,” Ogbonnia added.

Ogbonnia stressed that Ohaneze commended the Afenifere for its reassurances of security and support to stranger communities in Yorubaland, particularly Lagos State and for reassuring the people that there was no war between the Yoruba and any other group in Nigeria, especially the Igbos.

“We encourage other ethnic socio-cultural organizations to borrow a leaf from the Afenifere in standing up for principles of equity and justice and to be counted each time Nigeria is confronted with political crises.

“We also join Afenifere in restating our confidence in the the judiciary with the hope that it will acquit itself creditably in the election litigations presently before it without fear or favour,” he prayed.

  • Iwuanyanwu didn’t refer to Yorubas as political rascals – Ohaneze

Iwuanyanwu didn’t refer to Yorubas as political rascals – Ohaneze

The Apex Igbo Socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has said that Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu never referred to Yorubas as political rascals, describing the report as a lie from the pit of hell.

Ohaneze said the report was “a typical falsehood, fabricated by social media entrepreneurs, decorated with wings, expanded with venom, injected with ethnic nuances to create inter-ethnic mistrust between the age-long partners in social, cultural, religious and economic development of Nigeria.

The group said this in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, in Enugu on Sunday.

Ogbonnia said: “Our attention has been drawn to the fake news making the rounds that the Chairman, Council of Elders, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, referred to the Yoruba as political rascals.

He denied that Iwuanyanwu never made such a comment while speaking in Awka, Anambra State, on Saturday during an event to mark the one year in office of Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra state.

Ogbonnia said Chief Iwuanyanwu only drew the attention of the audience and the general public to the fact that Ndigbo and Yoruba people were neither quarreling nor fighting, implying that the Yoruba were a friendly group of people.

He said Iwuanyanwu only said, “I want to tell those in Lagos to realize that there is no war between us and the Yorubas”, adding that “those who attacked Ndigbo in Lagos recently are rascals who should be arrested”.

“This has mischievously been twisted to imply that ‘Yoruba people are political rascals and that we will fight them’. This is quel dommage from the insidious minds of those who wish to create rift between the Igbo and the Yoruba ethnics.

“At no time in history, there is often a tug of war between two major groups; mostly the good people with conscience on one hand and the devious insidious minds on the other.

“So, as much as some mischief makers will twist the speech by Iwuanyanwu, the truth remains that he holds the Yorubas in a very high esteem and he used the Awka event to express it,” Ogbonnia said.

He added that emphasis was that “we must not attribute the ugly event in Lagos to the good people of Yoruba ethnic, rather, it was the handiwork of rascals, hooligans, spivs, charlatans, miscreants and dregs of Lagos society.

“It is important to highlight that Chief Iwuanyanwu is a renowned patriotic detribalized Nigerian who has enjoyed the fidelity, confidence, solidarity, support of the Yoruba when he was in active business and politics.

“Iwuanyanwu in all his private and public discussions has often commended the profound Yoruba cultural values, intellect and and hospitality.

“He applauds the cordial relationship between the Igbo and the Yoruba, citing that several Igbo are integral parts of various Yoruba communities.

He maintained that there has been successful marriages of Yoruba daughters by frontline Igbo sons, citing Chief Emeka Anyaoku; Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Chike Edozien; Prof. Vincent Ike, Prof. Okey Ndibe and others.

Ogbonnia exemplify the irreproachable similarity in the Igbo-Yoruba cultural values and cosmology.

“Evidently, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), enjoyed the support of eminent Igbo sons and daughters.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Ohanaeze Ndigbo will resist any attempt to paint the 2023 presidential election with an ethnic tar,” he added.

  • Ohaneze urges FG to intervene in ethnic profiling of Igbos

Ohaneze urges FG to intervene in ethnic profiling of Igbos

The Apex Igbo Socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has urged Federal Government to intervene into what it described as “ethnic profiling of the Igbo in Lagos State” since 2023 election began.

The group also wanted the Federal Government to look into attendant hardship which Igbo people had been subjected to with a view to averting the impending tragedy.

This is contained in a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Dr Alex Ogbonnia in Enugu on Monday, titled “What have Igbos done”.

According to him, there is need to end atrocities against the Igbos in Lagos State before it degenerates into other untold consequences.

“We, therefore, call on the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director of DSS, the Governor of Lagos State, as well as Bola Tinubu and others to wade into this ethnic profiling of the Igbo in Lagos.

“Ohanaeze wants to let the world know that Ndigbo have paid the ultimate prize for the unity of Nigeria,” he said.

Ogbonnia added that in spite of the harrowing experiences the Southeast endured during the civil war, the Igbos had embraced Nigeria with great enthusiasm, open-mindedness, hospitality, entrepreneurship, creativity and patriotism.

“The question on every lip is what have the Igbo done?,” He asked.

Ohanaeze wondered why in every election, Igbos in Lagos would be a target of attack by both the traditional institutions and government agencies while the “federal government would complicitly watch and sanctimoniously preach that the unity of Nigeria is indivisible and indissoluble.

“It is once more pointed out that Lagos was the capital of Nigeria at the Nigerian Independence in 1960; just like Abuja is today the capital of Nigeria.

“It is of course highly inconceivable for a particular ethnic group to be excluded from the social, economic and political activities in the federal capital territory of any country or in any part of the country for that matter.

“Instead of commendations and plaudits for the invaluable contributions of the Igbo in Lagos State, some miscreants have taken barbarism to the extreme by killing and maiming the Igbo because they came out to vote in a democratic election,”.

According to him, Ohanaeze Ndigbo do not want to view the Yoruba ethnic through the narrow lens orchestrated by the illegits, miscreants, hoodlums and the jaundiced half Yoruba who had met culture and civilization half way.

“This is because, Ohanaeze cannot forget the likes of Dr Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the Afenifere and indeed all those eminent Yoruba that stood on the side of justice, equity and history by supporting Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party for the presidency of Nigeria in 2023.

“Neither are we unaware of the numerous Igbo sons and daughters whose spouses are from the Yoruba ethnic group,” he noted.

The group pointed out that all the highly placed persons, such as Bayo Onanugas who had championed threats, maiming and killings of the Igbo in Lagos had never been brought to book as a deterrent to other unrepentant ethnic chauvinists.

He described Ndigbo as “essentially republican and cosmopolitan in nature” with a very open society that admitted competence far and above ethnic sentiments.

“In the First Republic, a Fulani man was elected the Mayor of Enugu.

“In last Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections, a Yoruba man, Chinasa Abiola was elected as a member of Abia State House of Assembly to represent Umuahia South State Constituency,” Ogbonnia added.

  • Buhari pays tribute to Ohaneze President-General, Obiozor

Buhari pays tribute to Ohaneze President-General, Obiozor

President Muhammadu Buhari says he is deeply saddened by the passing of Prof. George Obiozor, the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, worldwide.

In a statement by a spokesperson for Buhari, Mr Femi Adesina on Thursday in Abuja, he extended heartfelt condolences to Obiozor’s family, the government and people of Imo as well as Ndigbo, at home and in Diaspora.

Buhari described the demise of the former Ambassador of Nigeria to the U.S, High Commissioner to the Republic of Cyprus and Ambassador to the State of Israel, as an immeasurable loss to the country.

The president said that the former Director-General, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) had exemplified leadership skills and values as a thoroughbred diplomat.

The president said that the contributions of the unique leader and strong proponent of peace and a stable polity, who also held other strategic public positions, would never be forgotten.

He also believed that all those mourning the demise of the statesman, who commanded great respect among his peers in the academia and foreign policy arena, would honour his memory by actively embracing his beliefs and ideas geared towards uniting Nigeria beyond geo-political considerations.

Buhari recalled fond memories of meeting Obiozor on several occasions and value his endearing sense of patriotism.

The president said he joined the Igbo nation in ”mourning the irreparable loss of this great son of Nigeria,” even as he prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of the deceased.

  • Why Nigerians should elect problem-solving leaders — Prof. Osuntokun

Why Nigerians should elect problem-solving leaders — Prof. Osuntokun

Professor of History, Prof. Akinjide Osuntokun has urged Nigerians to elect problem-solving leaders in the 2023 general elections.

The professor Emeritus of Geography at the University of Ibadan, and renowned social scientist of global recognition, said such leaders should be able to proffer solutions to the economic, social and political problems affecting the country.

Osuntokun, an Ekiti- born professor, made this known at a Public Lecture on “Nationalism and Nation Building in Nigerian History” in Lagos on Monday.

The lecture with the topic : the Genesis of Nigerian Nationalism, was hosted by Prof. George Obiozor, President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo.

Osuntokun recalled that the late Nelson Mandela had said that until Nigeria became very  successful, no one would have respect for the black man.

The octogenarian said it was regrettable that Nigeria’s  external force challenges,  worked against the success of the country.

He regretted that some Nigerian  leaders appeared oblivious to the destiny of the country and the black race.

Osuntokun said Nigeria democracy should be based on the French revolution credo of careers open to talents instead of the current nebulous federal character.

He said that the future of the country was already pregnant and no one, with mathematical precision could hazard what it would bear.

The octogenarian said that as a former ambassador of Nigeria, he was in favour of finding solution to the constitutional and structural problems in the country.

He said: “I saw how our size, resources and population brought us respect abroad.

“The sorrowful thing is that some of those at the commanding height of political leadership in this country appear totally indifferent to the destiny of Nigeria and the black race.

“What we need if this country is to succeed,  is to find collective and equitable solutions to the way we choose our government.

“The electorate should elect government that is based on the French  revolution credo of careers open to  talents.

“This is instead of the current nebulous federal character and the odious and rampant corruption running the country while the majority of our people vegetate in poverty and in want.”

Osuntokun recalled that during the Gen. Ibrahim Babaginda regime, he inaugurated committees including himself and others from various universities from the North and South of the country,  to design a formula in solving what was called the ‘National Question’.

He said they worked under the ministry of special duties in the presidency with absolute freedom to come up with  recommendations.

Osuntokun said they came up with a recommendation of collective presidency and they suggested dividing the country into six zones namely,  South-South, South-West, South-East, North-East, North-Central and North-West.

“We suggested that if any president comes from these zones, the remaining five zones will produce five Vice Presidents,  each of them heading the ministry of Finance, Defence, Interior, Foreign Affairs and Education.

“We also suggested that the presidency will be rotated every five years so each zone will have the chance to head the country and no zone will he kept out of power for too long.

“We recommended that political parties will contest for power on this basis and whoever wins must locate people representing all the six zones within their parties.

“This was submitted, I believed in 1987, years before the 1993 election  which Abiola won and some members of the PDP later claimed zoning was their contribution to political engineering in the country.”

According to him, this is not true, the verdict on the way to run the country is still hanging in the air.

The nationalist said they did not have too much time to find an appropriate constitutional architecture with which Nigeria could build a happy state acceptable to all their people.

Osuntokun said since 1966, Nigeria had struggled to find a modus operandi of ruling a multinational state, balancing regional desire for autonomy under the overarching national structure.

He noted that the search of a modus vivendi unfortunately,  led to the disastrous civil war in which some millions of Nigerians died from 1967 to 1970.

The don said one would have taught Nigeria had learnt a bitter lesson from its recent history but the contrary was the case.

The Octogenarian said several unviable states by the whims and fiat of the military rulers  who had dominated the politics of Nigeria for years,  had  been created,  thus miniaturizing the power of the constituent states.

He said from the demand for restructuring by almost everyone, it seemed those in power had better listened and controlled events from above rather than leaving the people to demand by force of numbers from below.

Earlier, In his opening remarks, Prof. George Obiozor, President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, said for Nigeria’s unity to succeed,   leaders needed to emulate the experiences of countries that did not ignore the element of pluralism in their respective countries and societies.

Obiozor said recently, some Nigerian political leaders said the nation’s unity ‘is non-negotiable’ but noted that it  was an irony because these leaders had failed to learn the lessons of history in general.

According to him, Nigerian unity is definitely negotiable and must be re-negotiated for it to stand the test of time.

“Nigeria needs a system of shared power, bearing in mind that political decency flourishes best in societies in which stable, peaceful and just political institutions make it difficult for reckless and lawless political adventurers to thrive.

“Also, throughout history, those denied justice have had no interest in peace, people need peace and not peace of the graveyard, people need unity but not unity of masters and slaves.

” Our national unity must not interfere seriously with our freedom and liberty or it will be interpreted as tyranny of the majority or minority, none of which will be acceptable,” he said.

The don said that above all,  good leadership was non negotiable, adding that history had shown that the destiny of leadership was closely tied to the destiny of their respective nations.

Speaking, the Chairman of the lecture, Gen. Atom Kpera noted that from independence till date, no generation of Nigerian leaders had been able to create an atmosphere of credibility.

This he said,  would have ensured Nigeria claim to a political future as one nation.

  • Ekweremadu : It’s selective amnesia Judgement, Ohanaeze tells FG, says you’ll hear from us soon

Ekweremadu : It’s selective amnesia Judgement, Ohanaeze tells FG, says you’ll hear from us soon

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, on Saturday, described as “hasty” and a “selective judgement”, an interim forfeiture of 40 landed assets belonging to a former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

Ohanaeze said Ekweremadu, who is being prosecuted for alleged organ harvesting in the United Kingdom, should be given the opportunity to defend himself.

Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court Abuja had ordered the interim forfeiture of Ekweremadu’s assets following an ex-parte motion by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

However, Ohanaeze in a statement issued and signed by Dr. Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia, National Publicity Secretary, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, said though there are several allegations of corruption cases pending in the EFCC, the urgency and selective judgement in the case of Ekweremadu is curious.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo stands on a moral probity to state that a hasty exparte motion filed by the EFCC on a man who is undergoing some travails in the United Kingdom falls short of ethical standards and natural justice.

“We maintain that Sen. Ike Ekweremadu should be given the opportunity to defend himself on his properties; and if found wanting should surely face the consequences.

“We are aware that there are several allegations of corruption cases pending in the EFCC, but the urgency and selective judgement in the case of Ekweremadu is not only curious but indeed true to type.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo calls on all the Nigerian legal luminaries of goodwill to intervene against gradual steps towards totalitarianism.

  • Forget our support if you drop Okowa – Igbo youths warn Atiku

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has been warned not to drop Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate

There are growing concerns that pressure is mounting on Atiku to drop Okowa and replace him with Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.

It was gathered that Wike’s loyalists are also said to be making the same demand as the only way to make room for peace in the party.

However, a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide (OYC) made it known that Atiku will regret it if he drops Okowa and replaces him with Wike.

The statement signed by the National President of OYC, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike and the Secretary, Comrade Obinna Achionye said any attempt to replace Okowa would backfire.

The Igbo youths said the South-East would not accept to lose out completely in the scheme of things, having lost the opportunity to produce the presidential candidate of either the PDP or the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“There is no need to repeat that we expected both the PDP and the APC to zone their presidential tickets to the South-East, but that did not happen.

“Though this has been overtaken by events, the only consolation we have is the choice of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as running mate to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, considering that Okowa is a true Igbo son.

“Having said this, how could anyone wake up and think of replacing Okowa with Wike? As much as we know that Atiku reserves the right to choose whoever he wills as his running mate, we also have the right to vote according to our desire.

“And that desire is clear- that the PDP would not get one vote from Igbo land should they field Wike, because this is a man who disowned Ndigbo. He said he is not one of us and this is payback time, we also do not know him. Should the PDP make the mistake of pairing him with Atiku, the PDP will be roundly rejected during the presidential election,” the Ohanaeze youths warned.

The OYC added that “with the new Electoral Act, those who constituted themselves into emperors are going to be disgraced during the polls. The time for bogus fake results is over, so nobody should be deceived.”

  • 2023: Ohaneze attacks PDP over Okowa, says Igbos will not vote for them

Igbo apex socio-political group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has criticized the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) over it’s choice of Okowa as the vice presidential candidate.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that PDP has announced Delta state Governor as the running mate to presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

However, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro the Secretary-General, of Ohaneze has described Okowa as a minus to Atiku.

This was contained in a statement that he signed and released on Thursday, shortly after Okowa’s emergence, adding that it means the Igbos would not vote for Atiku in the forthcoming general election.

Isiguzoro described  Okowa’s choice as Atiku’s running mate as a chaotic selection for “a party not ready to win the 2023 elections.”

His statement reads in part: Okowa is the “reward for a serial betrayal whose inescapable actions will never add national integrity and value to the progress of PDP in 2023, Ifeanyi Okowa is a minus for Atiku, as his choice will decline PDP’s fortunes in Delta and Southern Nigeria.

“A man who misled the Southern Governors agenda will never be trusted for the votes of Ndigbo; Igbos will never vote Atiku and Okowa”

Ohanaeze Ndigbo is an Igbo socio-cultural organization in Nigeria. The group aims to represent the interests of all Igbo communities within and outside Nigeria.

  • 2023: Ebonyi Gov, Umahi tells Buhari why South East should produce next president

2023: Ebonyi Gov, Umahi tells Buhari why South East should produce next president

Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi has argued why the South East should be the region to produce the next president of Nigeria in the 2023 general election.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Umahi made this known on Friday during a meeting between visiting President Muhammadu Buhari and leaders of the zone in Abakaliki.

Umahi stressed that it will be difficult for the South-East zone to continue voting for people who will not vote for it during elections.

He said that it was wrong for the southern part of the country to clamour for equity and fairness on the issue of presidency when it could not replicate such within its fold.

“The South producing the presidency is a moral question which should be answered by its components.

“I thank a leader of the Middle Belt Forum and Chief Ayo Adebanjo from the South-West, as well as Chief Edwin Clark from the South-South over their views on a South-East president.

“The South-East should produce the president if other zones of the South are truly seeking for equity, fairness and justice,” he said.

Umahi noted that political considerations were applied in ensuring that the South-West zone produced the president in 1999.

“When it comes to our turn whatever wrong we have committed, the same political consideration should be applied to ensure equity and fairness.

“It will be difficult for the South-East to continually being shortchanged and continue voting for those who cannot vote for us,” he said.

Umahi joined other leaders of the zone to appeal for the release of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

“I have never been in support of the group’s activities and the president granted my appeal for a political situation towards his release.

“I want the Ohaneze Ndigbo Socio-cultural Organisation to shun the politicisation of the process and immediately consult relevant stakeholders and Kanu’s lawyer for it to commence,” he said.

He thanked Buhari for the visit and noted that he would still be invited to inaugurate more projects of the administration.

Meanwhile, in his remarks, President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Prof. George Obiozor said that Igbos would always crave for a united Nigeria which would accord them equity and justice.

Obiozor, represented by Chief Peter Aneke pleaded with the president to graciously direct the release of Kanu and other youths incarcerated for their agitations to ensure peace in the zone.

Also, Chief Mbazulike Amaechi, a First Republic minister, informed the audience that he was the surviving official of that era and begged the president to grant his request towards ensuring peace in the South-East zone.

“I seek to be given the mandate to negotiate peace in the zone because I desire such before I join my ancestors,” he said.

TNG reports several leaders of the zone joined in the call for Kanu’s release as the event concluded the president’s two-day official visit to the state.

However, President Buhari responded by saying Kanu’s fate remains with the court and that his worry is for innocent civilians.
