  • 2019: Okorocha announces son-in-law as successor

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has said that if his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu who also doubles as his Chief of Staff declares interest for the governorship seat in 2019, he (Okorocha) will support him.

The governor, at a meeting with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Owerri Municipal Council Area, said his decision to support Nwosu is derived from the fact that Nwosu has “the qualities of an ideal leader”.

The governor, however, said Nwosu is yet to inform him if he is nursing any governorship ambition.

He said: “The monumental achievements of my administration will not be left in the hand of any how person. The Chief of Staff has not told me he wants to run for the governorship but if he does signify, I will support him.

Uche Nwosu is hardworking and never gets tired. He is a very humble young man; not proud; not arrogant. So, Power won’t enter his head. Despite the position he occupies, you can’t see him quarrelling or maltreating anybody. He does not segregate against anybody. I have checked him in and out and I have not found him wanting.”

The governor called on the people not to repeat the mistake of 2015, stressing that the Igbo must vote for APC and President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 because according to him, “the Igbo need the North for political survival”.

Omoku massacre: Okorocha ‘shielding’ wanted cultist – Rivers govt

The Rivers State Government has accused the Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, of shielding one of the 32 cultists recently declared wanted by the Rivers State Security Council.

The state government gave the name of the cultist as Emenike Agamu, otherwise known as General Red Scorpion.

He is said to have been involved in the gruesome killing of 17 people on the New Year Day in Omoku, Rivers State.

The Rivers government, through its Commissioner for Justice, Emmanuel Aguma, said in a statement issued on Tuesday that the wanted cultist, Mr. Agamu, alongside other cultists, surrendered their weapons at Owerri, Imo State.

They were said to have been received by Governor Okorocha who reportedly said, “The state has forgiven them and will subsequently give their names to the Federal Government for Amnesty.”

The commissioner said Governor Wike has now been vindicated for the alarm he raised a few weeks ago that the All Progressives Congress, APC, were planning to recruit the wanted cultists into their party with the intention of using them during the 2019 election.

The commissioner said, “The Governor of Imo State has no constitutional power to grant amnesty to any person for an offence committed in Rivers State; Governor Okorocha can only grant amnesty with regard to offences ‘created’ by the House of Assembly of Imo State.”

”Also, President Muhammadu Buhari cannot grant amnesty to the wanted cultist, going by the Nigerian Constitution,” he said.

The said that the Ministry of Agriculture would be relocated to Ngor Okpala Local government Area, while the Ministry of Sports would be moved to Dan Anyiam Stadium.

He also announced the cancellation of two days off given to workers in the state civil service for farming to help cushion the effects of the economic recession on them.

According to him, the end of recession in the country has brought about significant improvement thereby ending the need for other avenues to supplement income.

He advised workers to resume their normal work schedules, adding that failure to comply would result in their immediate dismissal.

He also advised Imo people to be wise in the election of the next governor of the state and warned them against heating up the polity unnecessarily.

“Choose your next governor wisely, ensure you know his track record before you elect him; if you elect a greedy, fraudulent or power drunk person, it will surely manifest.

“Becoming a governor will not change a bad person, it will only bring those attributes to the fore,” he advised.

  • Lassa Fever: Okorocha warns against consumption of ‘raw garri’ as death toll rises

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State on Wednesday warned residents against consumption of ‘raw garri’ (cassava flakes) as three persons were confirmed dead in the state as a result of Lassa fever.

The killer disease is rapidly spreading across many parts of the country.

Seven cases of Lassa fever patients were also confirmed in the state.

This is not the period for people to drink raw garri because you know garri is not cooked and people just pour water on garri and drink and when rat has urinated on the garri. So people are advised as much as possible to ensure that their food is properly cooked,” the governor said.

He said the cases were recorded in some hospitals, “somewhere in Orlu and some other parts of the State.”

The first Lassa fever case this year was confirmed in Ebonyi state more than a week ago.

Four people including three health workers died from the infection in the state.

The disease have further spread to Kogi, Ondo and some other parts of the contry leaving death tolls.

According to Mr. Okorocha, the speed at which the disease is spreading is worrisome.

This morning we woke up to hear that Lassa fever has killed three persons and we also have seven cases of Lassa fever patients and this number is too large for a State. And we are concerned about the speed of spread.

These cases were recorded in some hospitals, somewhere in Orlu and some other parts of the State. For this reason, we kindly advise that people should avoid over crowded areas, lessen the shaking of hands, and body contacts at this period,” the governor said.

The State is on it. The Ministry of Health has been adequately informed to take all necessary steps to curtail the spread.

We will do everything humanly possible to make sure that this spread is curtailed. While government is taking this action, people should keep a clean and healthy environment at this time, avoid so many children staying in one place while government should handle the burial of those that died of Lassa fever. As you know, Lassa fever is deadly but if any discovery is made, lives can be saved,” he added.

Mr. Okorocha said all the confirmed cases have been put in isolation.

All the identified cases especially in Orlu, have been isolated and we have told the doctors not to take any more patients and even those in the hospital would be quarantined until such a time we have confirmed they are now positive in any form or shape.”

Okorocha’s bridges are tragedy waiting to happen – COREN

…accuses governor of building bridges without professional design

The President of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, (COREN) Kashim Ali has accused Governor Rochas Okorocha led Imo State Government of constructing bridges without professional design across the state, insisting that such are tragedy waiting to happen.

Ali who revealed this while addressing some senators on Tuesday, said several efforts by the association to call the state government to order had failed.

“If there is any calamity anywhere today, the expectation is that even if a mud house collapses, the journalist will say ‘where are the engineers?’” Mr. Ali said.

“For instance in Imo state, there is a tragedy about to happen. Their bridges are being built without design.

“We went there, we said, let’s see the design so that we can ascertain the condition of these bridges. We made a plea, they refused to give us. We asked for the engineers or anybody involved in this project so that we can at least interview and know the integrity of the bridges. So, we had to make a pronouncement to the effect that there was a problem that such could cause but because we don’t have enforcement power, we cannot stop that project.”

He sought the Senate’s help for amendment of the Act establishing COREN so as to empower the association to enforce its resolutions.

He told the senators that the bill, which is already at the House of Representatives, will strengthen the engineering profession in Nigeria.

“So, we are asking that the parliament should empower us so that we can have the power to do such thing. We also need the resources to also do that. So, those are the basic thrusts of the proposal that is in the House of Reps for an amendment to the COREN Act and we want to seek that eventually, if it comes to you, we want you to be aware of it, seek your colleagues’ support so that we can strengthen COREN and the practice of engineering in Nigeria.”

In his response, the leader of the Senate delegation, Ibrahim Gobir, Sokoto-APC assured the engineers of a speedy consideration of the bill.

“There is still more deliberations to be made on the bill. We will collect the bill from the House of Reps, go through it at our own level and look at the areas you are talking about. In the end we will do justice to it,” he said.

Reacting, David Mark, Benue-PDP, expressed shock at the revelation that the Imo state government declined the services of engineers in the construction of bridges.

“I’m a bit shocked at the revelation that somebody is building a bridge and he doesn’t want to get engineers involved. That’s the recklessness in this country. People just do things anyhow and because there are no consequences when things go wrong. They just do it with impunity. This is very unfortunate.

“I wish that we have some level of authority to stop people going that direction. Unfortunately, I don’t think we have that authority to stamp our feet on the ground and stop them from this level of impunity.

“The consequences when things go wrong is that they go to the background and the engineers are often called and before you know it, they are busy defending themselves on pages of papers and social media when indeed they have absolutely nothing to do with at all.”

APC govs have asked Buhari to run for second term – Okorocha

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) have unanimously agreed that President Muhammadu Buhari deserves a second term in office.

This prompted their asking him to run in the next election, according to the governor of Imo state and chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum, Rochas Okorocha.

Okorocha dropped the hint as he fielded questions from journalists at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, on his arrival from Abuja on Friday.

He declared that the President had justified his first term mandate and should have his mandate renewed.

Also unanimously reappointed by the governors, according to Okorocha, was the former governor of Rivers state, and incumbent Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the Director-General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation.

He noted that Amaechi did well as the Director-General of the campaign outfit in 2015.

Okorocha said, “We were in Abuja for three days, holding meetings of the Progressive Governors with the APC leadership. We deliberated on so many issues. First among the very important issues that we discussed, was the issue of Mr. President’s second term bid and it has the endorsement of all the governors of the APC.

“There is the need for him to complete his second term as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and he should go ahead to declare (to run for reelection).”

“We also deliberated and a unanimous decision was reached that we liaise with the campaign team, to be headed by the Minister of Transportation, Amaechi, as the Director-General.

“The governors also endorsed his (Amaechi’s) reappointment as the Director-General of the campaign team due to his track record ahead of the last election.

“Four years are not enough to show what the President can offer. We believe that another four years will bring out the best in him. The first four years are a very difficult period, and we believe that as things are stabilising, he will take Nigeria to the next level.

“The governors have serious responsibilities. All the governors were asked to put up a team as the campaign council.”
