  • (Opinion) Right of Reply: E. K. Clark and the Abuse of Old Age-By Friday Ewiwilem

(Opinion) Right of Reply: E. K. Clark and the Abuse of Old Age-By Friday Ewiwilem

More than ten years ago when he proclaimed to the world that he had turned eighty years of age, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, said that he was already in the departure lounge with his boarding pass to exit the world. He said that at eighty he had done everything there was to be done and that he was ready to bid farewell to the world.

As Africans who cherish long life, many people prayed for Clark to live longer in good health, but that he should reduce his propensity to causing trouble. Those who know Chief Clark testify that he is a merchant of trouble who derives psychological and material dividends from trouble. It was this tendency to making trouble and receiving attention that pushed him into the hands of those who used him to write his recent open letter to the Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa.

At over ninety years of age, Clark shouldn’t be in a position to write that kind of toxic letter laced with falsehoods and recriminations that even a man of sixty should not be associated with how much more a grand old man of over ninety.

For a very old man who claimed he was in the departure lounge more than ten years ago, Clark shouldn’t be commenting on politics. He should live in peace reminiscing and surrounded by his great-grandchildren. But as always he fishes in troubled waters and he allowed unscrupulous elements to take advantage of his pugilistic nature.

Those who pushed Chief Clark into writing that vexatious letter wanted to use him to score cheap political point. Unluckily for them, they failed because Deltans and Nigerians know Chief Clark for what and who he really is.

Clark is one of Nigeria’s problems. He came into public light nearly sixty years ago and had he demonstrated the kind of altruism and patriotism required of him Nigeria would not be where she is today. Those who know still remember whose corruptly acquired properties were seized by the Murtala/Obasanjo regime in 1975/1976. Nigerians also remember the Federal Commissioner for Information behind the sycophancy of Gowon Must Rule Forever which was one of the reasons for the July 1975 coup that ousted General Yakubu Gowon as Head of State.

The truth of the Warri crisis also points to the intransingency of a man with zero tolerance for his neighbours. The Niger Delta crisis that nearly swallowed Nigeria was also orchestrated for selfish reasons by the old man who lives in opulence at the expense of his fellow Niger Deltans. The colossal failure that the Presidency of Goodluck Jonathan was also the product of Clark who made Jonathan to alienate other ethnic nationalities of the Niger Delta especially the Urhobo and the Itsekiri and thought that the Ijaws could have their way to rule Nigeria through militancy.

The result was that the Niger Delta wasted a great opportunity spanning six years. All that Chief Clark always wanted was to be serviced with contracts and the spoils of office. Those who should know can tell us how the money for the Edwin Clark University in Kiagbodo was raised. Clark felt no qualms when State Governors were emptying their State accounts in donations to the University to make him happy as the father of the President then.

Well-meaning Deltans and Nigerians should disregard Clark’s vexatious letter as the work of disgruntled elements who saw an opportunity to use an old man that is known for stirring needless controversies. Every allegation or point made in that letter is false. The accusations of dictatorship, lack of accountability, and betrayal against Governor Okowa are blatantly untrue. Delta State under Governor Okowa embraced Local Government autonomy and augments the Councils’ finances with over 400 million naira monthly. Okowa’s non-interference with the House of Assembly makes it one of the most stable in the country.

The State also practices judicial autonomy. The Government under Governor Okowa has always made its dealings public.
Chief Clark made so much ado about loans which are really not what he is claiming they are. Prejudice made him not to read or listen to what the Delta State Government has said over and over about the loans. He should read up more about the loans and he will bite off the ears of his informants. Clark’s position on DESOPADEC and 13% derivation is also very wrong. He has not taken into consideration the poor economic reality and the meager returns from crude oil that has affected not just DESOPADEC, but the national economy.
DESOPADEC accounts are audited annually and he should do well to read a copy.

It is difficult to understand Chief Clark’s grouse with the new Universities. The establishment of the three Universities made Delta State Nigeria’s foremost education destination. This feat which will boost Human Capital Development within Delta State and beyond has earned Governor Okowa accolades. So why is Chief Clark angry?
Clark expressed anger at Okowa’s emergence as Vice-Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and called the act a betrayal. Clark ought to know the exigency that led to Okowa’s emergence. He said that Okowa betrayed Nyesom Wike and Emmanuel Udom. But is Clark not aware that Wike desperately wanted to be Vice-President too, but failed? Clark tried to play god when he said that God will not answer Okowa’s prayers of wanting to be Vice-President, but two days later Okowa received massive endorsement from former Presidents-Generals from the South-East. Many other Governors have also endorsed the Atiku/Okowa ticket.
Clark self-righteously accused other leaders of not speaking against Governor Okowa because they have been compromised. This is really far from the truth.

The leaders are satisfied with Governor Okowa’s superlative performance. These leaders live in Delta State and they see and appreciate the works of Governor Okowa. On the other hand, Clark is in Abuja and listening to hearsay from mischief makers. One should think that at over ninety, Chief Clark should be living in Kiagbodo and see firsthand what is going on in Delta State and not remain in Abuja to abuse the privilege of old age.

Developmental strides: Delta South PDP Chairman Takeme rates Okowa high

Chairman of the Delta South Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Amb. Julius Takeme (JP) on Friday scored and rated the Governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, 2023 Vice Presidential candidate of the PDP high on his developmental strides across the State.

The Delta South PDP Chairman, Takeme made the rating on Friday in Warri, Delta State.

According to him, the decision to select the performing and wonderful Governor of Delta State as the running mate to Atiku as vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 Presidential election remains one of the best decisions so far since the history of Delta State.

However, Dr. Takeme noted that Okowa’s developmental strides and his contribution towards the growth and development of the PDP and the country so far made him the best choice as running mate to Atiku.

Nevertheless, Takeme asserted that Okowa’s developmental blueprint in Delta is visible to everyone in the state, stressing Okowa’s projects have also touched Ijaw Riverine communities in the state that has been hitherto been neglected.

Speaking further, Takeme had described Governor Okowa and the PDP vice Presidential candidate as a prudent manager of resources, adding that he is a tested and trusted leader hence his nomination as the vice presidential candidate of the PDP.

Julius Takeme stated that what Governor Okowa needs now is to be encouraged by patriotic Nigerians and Deltans, adding that Okowa’s track records are there for everyone to look at.

Leader Takeme argued that no Governor since the creation of Delta State has ever touched riverine communities in the state with development and massive political appointment of Ijaw sons and daughters to the Delta State Government as much as Okowa, noting that Okowa has proven his love for the Ijaw people over the years.

Meanwhile, Takeme had tasked Governor Okowa to remain focused in his mission to rescue Nigerians, stressing that he should not be discouraged by petty distractions.

In his words: “Okowa’s nomination as vice Presidential candidate to Atiku is the best thing ever that has happened to Delta State. He has graciously spread Development to Ijaw areas and all parts of Delta state. Okowa should not be discouraged by distractions. Ijaws are very proud of Okowa’s developmental strides across the state and the Ijaw areas as well.

“Governor Okowa is one man that is known for delivering whenever he occupies any political office or given any assignment, he is known as a deliverer “. Takeme stated.

  • Gen Tuoyo: Okowa, Ibori, Manager, Oborevwori, others bid farewell to Uduaghan’s Late Father-In-Law

Gen Tuoyo: Okowa, Ibori, Manager, Oborevwori, others bid farewell to Uduaghan’s Late Father-In-Law

…as Uduaghan pour encomiums on him

Late military administrator of old Ondo State and father-in-law of ex-Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, Brigadier General Sunday Tuoyo was buried at the weekend in Warri, Delta State.

Tuoyo in his last drive arrived at the First Baptist Church, Warri, for a funeral church service at 11am flanked by children and family members.

A brown casket containing the remains of the deceased was conveyed into the church hall by senior military officers with the casket covered with Nigeria’s national flag.

The General passed on Saturday 17, December 2022, in Lagos at the ripe age of 87.

Tuoyo was the father of former Delta First Lady and wife of former Governor Uduaghan, Deaconess (Mrs) Roli Uduaghan.

In his homily titled “Handling Issue of Death (the Christian Way)”, Rev. S. Adeleke described the late Tuoyo as an exemplary man who dedicated his life to the service of God and humanity.

Rev. Adeleke told the children of the deceased and congregants to emulate Tuoyo’s lifestyle which exemplified peace, love and fear of God, saying that the ends of every man’s journey on earth is death

While cautioning Christians to live like Jesus Christ, the cleric charged guests not to fear death but to be prepared for it as Christ repeatedly spoke about it to his disciples.

Dignitaries including the state governor and vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, represented by his wife, Dame Edith Okowa and former Governor James Ibori attended the burial ceremony.

Others were; Delta Deputy Governor, Deacon Kingsley Otuaro; Senator representing Delta South at the National Assembly, Senator James Manager; Speaker of the State House of Assembly and PDP governorship candidate, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori; renowned media entrepreneur and founder of ThisDay Newspapers & Arise TV, Prince Nduka Nduka Obaigbena; Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Ndidi Elumelu and former Speaker of the State House of Assembly and chieftain of APC, Engr. Victor Ochei.

Also in attendance; a former Delta Chief Judge, Justice Roseline Bozino; General and Mrs. Ike Nwachukwu; Udu of Olomu Kingdom, Olorogun John Oguma; House of Representatives member, Chief Thomas Ereyitomi; APC Delta South senatorial candidate, Hon. Joel Thomas-Onowhakpo; renowned economist, Mr. Bismarck Rewane; former NDDC Director of Projects, Engr. Omatsuli Tuoyo; APC chieftain, Hon. Chris Oghenechovwen; Chief Fred Majemite; and sports administrator, Hon. Solomon Ogba.

Others are influential Itsekiri businessman, Chief Emma Uduaghan; former Delta Health Commissioner, Dr. Alex Ideh; immediate past Delta SSG, Mr. Chiedu Ebie Esq.; former Delta SSG under Uduaghan administration, Comrade Ovuozourie Macaulay; popular Warri-based lawyer, Mr. Ene Edah Esq.; former Delta Head of Service, Chief Peter Origho; three-term member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Daniel Reyenieju, former Press Secretary to Uduaghan, Mr. Linus Chima and members of the Delta State House of Assembly.

Meanwhile, former Governor Uduaghan has described his late father-in-law, General Tuoyo, as a true definition of ‘patriotic Nigerian’ and nation builder who placed the interest of the country always above self during his lifetime.

Uduaghan, in a tribute to the former military governor, said the late Tuoyo contributed immensely to the unity of the country especially during the military juntas and civil war where he gallantly defended the interest of the country.

He noted that the deceased, aside being a father-in-law, took him as son and contributed so much to restoring peace to Niger Delta during the era of militancy when he held sway as two-term governor of the oil-rich state.

While saying that General Tuoyo would be greatly missed by family and friends, he called on the Nigeria Government to honour those who made genuine efforts in keeping the country as one and did not take advantage of their positions to enrich themselves.

“Daddy was a national builder. He made such sacrifices to keep the country as one. These are the types of people we must celebrate. There must be a way of remembering nation builders like General Tuoyo who we hardly heard of. We’ll greatly miss him”, Uduaghan eulogised.

On his part, General Ike Nwachukwu, a close ally of the deceased, said General Tuoyo played a pivotal role in helping the Nigerian Government to defeat Biafra soldiers to keep the country as an indivisible entity.

Nwachukwu, while paying glowing tribute to his friend, said “he was one of those who made the defeat of Biafra possible. He was the one who cut off supply to Biafra. He was a brave, intelligent and courageous officer. Like General Tuoyo, we must work for a country where there’s justice and equity.”

  • Presidential election: Fresh straw poll puts Atiku-Okowa ahead others

Presidential election: Fresh straw poll puts Atiku-Okowa ahead others

Barely 31 days to the presidential election in Nigeria, a fresh straw poll has put Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as favourite to win the election ahead of other candidates.

The former vice president who hails from Adamawa state in the north east is running with Ifeanyi Okowa, current governor of Delta state on what is called the Atiku-Okowa ticket.

The straw poll conducted by Guardians of Leadership and Democracy, GLD, a pro-democracy group with focus on leadership, good governance, sustainable democracy, innovation and human capital development, has put Atiku in clear lead over three other top contenders for the plum job.

Straw poll, also known as straw ballot, is usually an ad hoc poll carried out to determine the slant of opinion on an issue or popularity of an individual or group of persons within a community. In modern political communication and marketing, it has become an effective quickfire tool to gauge popularity of issues or suitability of persons for a position.

The group has in the past conducted straw poll (both online and offline) on several national issues and on popularity of categories of Nigerians for certain offices including whether Nigeria should adopt the Parliamentary system of government or continue with the extant Presidential system.

Many respondents to the poll conducted (online and offline) across diverse categories of Nigerians, according to GLD, projected Atiku to win the presidential election.

A press statement issued in Lagos, Wednesday, by GLD Executive Secretary, Dr. Robert Ebelo, said the emergence of Atiku as Presidential candidate of the PDP altered earlier projections of the possibility of the next President emerging from the southern part of the country.

The statement explained that most of the respondents from the north picked Atiku over other candidates. The statement added that straw polls are not scientific polls but they represent opinion at a given time and are subject to change.

In the North-West geopolitical zone, which comprises the seven states of Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi and Jigawa, with a total of 22.67 million registered voters, most of the respondents picked Atiku over others. The candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) , Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso, came closest to Atiku in the zone.

“Our findings showed that despite repeated pleas for people not to allow issues of religion and ethnicity to determine how they vote, most of the respondents still consider religion and ethnicity as very strong factors that would determine who they vote for.
In the south west with 18.3 million registered voters, Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, and his All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu showed clear strength with Tinubu slightly edging Obi.

The zone which comprises Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti and Ondo is perceived to be the stronghold of Tinubu. The PDP placed third behind APC and Labour Party in the zone.

This again confirms that ethnicity would be a major determinant in the voting pattern in the forthcoming election.
The same trend showed in the south east where Peter Obi hails from. The straw poll showed Peter Obi in clear lead but Atiku and his PDP also showed huge presence in the zone.

In the north east, Atiku’s zone, the Atiku-Okowa ticket was dominant on the scale with more respondents picking Atiku ahead of the Tinubu-Shettima ticket.
In the north central, the poll projected a balance of strength between Atiku-Okowa and Tinubu-Shettima tickets.
However, in the South-south, which is traditionally a PDP stronghold and the zone of Atiku’s running mate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, the Atiku-Okowa ticket was in clear lead; followed by Peter Obi and his Labour Party.

According to the statement, the 2023 Presidential election contrasts with the norm in the past where the race was always reduced to a two-horse race with one horse being the dominant one, making the contest too easy to call.
Some of the criteria considered by respondents, according to the statement, include ethnicity, fitness, ability to create job and wealth, experience, among other human development indices.

  • Elections: We need to reset and rebuild from the ashes of the APC misrule-Okowa promises Nigerians

Elections: We need to reset and rebuild from the ashes of the APC misrule-Okowa promises Nigerians

… insists Nigerians have rejected APC presidential candidates

The vice presidential candidate of the PDP and Governor of Delta State,Ifeanyi Okowa has said there is urgent need to reset and rebuild Nigeria from the ashes of APC misrule.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports this is just as the Delta Campaign council has declared January 24 as PDP day in Delta as the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar and other critical stakeholders will be in its campaign train.

This was disclosed in a briefing by Hon Funkekeme Solomon, Director of Campaigns, Delta PDP Campaign Council on Wednesday in Asaba the State capital.

The campaign director while giving a breakdown of the council’s campaigns which spanned every ward in the state said:

“The APC-led Federal Government has done more to divide Nigerians than unite us in addition to the biting poverty. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, over 133 million Nigerians are poverty-stricken.

“Like the PDP Vice-Presidential candidate said, “APC has plunged Nigeria and its citizens into severe hardship from which the country needs to be rescued, reset, and rebuilt from the ashes of the APC misrule. And for that to happen, we of the Delta campaign Council join him in strongly calling on all Nigerians, nay all Deltans to Vote Atiku Abubakar for President and Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for Governor of Delta State. Indeed, Atiku Abubakar truly illustrates the model example of the President that Nigeria needs now; he is detribalized, cosmopolitan, a unifying figure, a successful businessman, and a pan-Nigerian.

“As former Vice-President, his management of the economy was exceptionally good, far better than what is currently experienced under this crushing APC-led Federal Government and Nigerians stand to gain from his wealth of experience. Of course, as his running mate, our leader, Governor Okowa also possesses the requisite knowledge and experience to help him with the task of building the Nigeria of our dreams.

” The Delta PDP Campaign Committee has said times without numbers why the APC-led Federal Government MUST go. APC has deceived Nigerians enough with its maladministration of the country in all areas. Therefore, Nigerians have rejected as unthoughtful the decision to field “Alhaji” Bola Tinubu, whose physical ability and mental state of mind is in question; the one on whose neck hangs the yoke of unanswered questions about his age, parentage, State of origin and the well-known baggage of his drug baron status remains an insult to the intelligence and sensibilities of Nigerians. Bola Tinubu on account of this lacks all indices of a fit and proper person to be voted as President of Nigeria. To vote in such a man is to turn Nigeria into an illicit drug headquarters of the world. God forbid. His candidacy is indefensible, by any standard.

“As you are already aware, the party about two months ago successfully visited all the 270 Wards in this State in our endeavour to reach the grassroots with our message of Rescue, Reset and Rebuild Nigeria as well as advancing Delta.

” And I dare to say that the messages were well-delivered to our teeming supporters who now look up earnestly to vote for the PDP and all its candidates from the Presidential, Senate, House of Representatives; to the Governorship and House of Assembly candidates.

” Shortly after, the Campaign Committee again embarked on the Local Government campaigns traversing the Local Government Areas. So far, a total of 23 Local Government Areas of the State have been reached with the message of hope for Nigeria and Delta State. The remaining two Local Government Areas will be covered in due course before long.

” We give praise, glory, and thanks to God Almighty whose guidance and protection remained with us all through the onerous, almost daily travels of crisscrossing the Local Government Areas. We also thank you, Gentlemen of the Press, for partnering with us through your various reportage and creating awareness of our campaign events in your various media organs of radio, television, newspaper, and the online genres of news dissemination.

“We greatly appreciate your partnership on your call to duty. It will interest you to know that the joy displayed by party faithful, members, and supporters on each of our campaign visits was not just overwhelming but palpable; it was an atmosphere of peace and warm reception all the way with a massive turnout of people at the campaign grounds.

” The Vice-Presidential Candidate of our party and Governor of Delta State, Senator, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, our leader, was with us all through the Local Government Area campaigns, during which the people showed love for the PDP and expressed great enthusiasm and strong assurance and conviction to vote for all the candidates of the PDP. The people indeed showed great interest and were excited in the fact that a Deltan, Governor Okowa, emerging as Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, will be to the advantage of Delta State, and they assured that Deltans will not allow this opportunity to slip past. Thus, they expressed determination to ensure that every vote counts for the PDP. Party chieftains in each Local Government displayed uncommon loyalty and support for the PDP and went the extra mile to net in decampees from other political parties to the PDP. Their devotion and dedication to the cause of the PDP clearly confirmed the PDP position that Delta is synonymous with PDP.

” As we salute PDP faithful and supporters in Delta State, it is important to call their attention to the key issues raised by our leader, Governor, and Vice-Presidential candidate, Senator, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, especially as Nigeria contends with unabating insecurity, rising hunger, and poverty, an economy plagued with huge debts, prostrate education, acutely exemplified by long closure of tertiary institutions, the abysmal state of Federal roads across the country, and the scuttling of the structure of unity of this nation. Never has Nigeria been so disunited and fractured.

” The APC-led Federal Government has done more to divide Nigerians than unite us in addition to the biting poverty.

Hon. “Indeed, Atiku Abubakar truly illustrates the model example of the President that Nigeria needs now; he is detribalized, cosmopolitan, a unifying figure, a successful businessman, and a pan-Nigerian. Of course, as his running mate, our leader, Governor Okowa also possesses the requisite knowledge and experience to help him with the task of building the Nigeria of our dreams.

“The Delta PDP Campaign Committee has said times without numbers why the APC-led Federal Government MUST go.

” Bola Tinubu on account of this lacks all indices of a fit and proper person to be voted as President of Nigeria. To vote in such a man is to turn Nigeria into an illicit drug headquarters of the world. God forbid. His candidacy is indefensible, by any standard.

“This is why Nigerians should embrace and vote for PDP’s Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar who is in a better stead to rescue and restore Nigeria from the suffocating grip of the APC. Let me conclude this by repeating the question raised by Atiku to Nigerians – “Can APC recover Nigeria from itself?” Of course, the answer is NO, because Voting for the APC in the next election is a vote for a continuation of the current state of gloom, and Nigerians cannot afford to make that mistake. it is important to re-emphasize the following truths:

(a). PDP built this country from 1999 to 2015 when APC deceptively took over power.

(b). APC destroyed Nigeria from 2015 to 2023 and therefore has no moral basis to ask for another tenure from Nigerians.

(c). Only the PDP can rescue this country and reset it on the path of abundance, stability, and prosperity.

“We urge all Deltans to also vote massively for our Governorship candidate, Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Francis Oborevwori – a grassroots politician, who dwells with the people and knows where the shoe is pinching them. His M.O.R.E Agenda has a comprehensive and well-articulated package for Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security for Delta State.
This is our charge to Deltans and Nigerians in general, Vote for PDP candidates all-the-way

” It is also important for us to inform the generality of Deltans and persons living in Delta State that Tuesday, January 24, 2023 has been declared PDP Day. It is the day the National Campaign entourage of the PDP led by the Presidential Candidate and the National Chairman, as well as the National campaign leaders of the party will hit Delta State, and it will hold inside the Main Bowl of the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Nnebisi Road, Asaba. Oborevwori will deepen my administration’s performance – Okowa

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has assured the people of the state that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, will consolidate on his administration’s performance, if elected.

Okowa gave the assurance during the PDP campaign at Obiaruku, Ukwuani Local Government Area of the state, on Tuesday.

He said that Oborevwori had learnt a lot as the longest-serving Speaker of the State House of Assembly and would continue with the ongoing projects and programmes of his administration.

“I have known Oborevwori for many years now; he has been Speaker of the House of Assembly for six years and as the longest serving speaker, he has understudied our programmes and policies.

“He has learnt a lot and has given the assurance that he will be fair to all parts of Delta and ensure that no ongoing project is abandoned in any part of the state.

“Aside ongoing projects, he will also ensure continuation of our youths and women empowerment programmes,” he said.

Okowa, also the PDP vice-presidential candidate, gave the assurance that the Atiku-Okowa manifesto would unite the country to fight insecurity.

He said that a PDP administration would be willing to assist states to set up their own police systems to complement the federal police and other security agencies in fighting insecurity.

He also said that the Atiku-Okowa administration would ensure that federal roads were attended and promote functional and stable educational system in Nigeria.

“Thank God that I am going to Abuja and we will ensure that all federal roads are attended to.

”The eight months ASUU strike kept our children at home for so long but throughout the period of strike, all our universities in Delta were in session.

“They were in session because we have taken care of all they needed for the educational advancement of the state.

“So, for Delta to continue on the path of progress and development, let’s vote for all candidates of the PDP,” he said.

On his part, former Gov. Emmanuel Uduaghan, urged the people to vote all PDP candidates to enable Okowa to become the vice-president of the country.

He said a vote for the party would ensure proper allocation of oil resources produced from the state.

Earlier, Oborevwori commended Okowa for the many projects in the area, including a Technical College at Obiaruku, ongoing construction of 27 kilometres of roads with over 70 per cent completed.

He added that no fewer than 400 indigenes of the area had benefited from the state’s empowerment programmes.

Oborevwori promised that his administration would construct the Amai and Arhagba-Orogun roads.

He also promised that he would be equitable to all parts of Delta and not abandon any ongoing project across the state.

Also the Chairman of the party, Chief Kingsley Esiso, commended the leaders and PDP faithful for the massive turnout at the rally.

    … umbrella has crumbled-Ilolo

A gale of defections has hit Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Delta state, as the All Progressives Congress, APC, Campaign train hit critical strongholds of the party.

During the week, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s Former Commissioner for Urban Renewal, Dr. Karo Ilolo, and two time chairman of Ethiope East LGA, Chief Mrs Faith Majemite, dumped the PDP and declared for APC.

Speaking on Friday during the APC ward to ward campaign at Uzere, the hometown of Okowa strongman, Bashorun Askia Ogieh, Ilolo said “the PDP umbrella is torn. We are totally committed to the cause of the APC, and we shall win”

Bashorun Askia is the Managing Director of Delta Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, which is considered as Governor Okowa’s financial war chest for the prosecution of the 2023 election.

Also at Uzere, Majemite dismissed the PDP as a party of “thieves.” She said that in seven and a half years, PDP under Governor Okowa, has received N4.2 trillion, but the state is still undeveloped and dirt poor.

“They are all thieves. If PDP comes here to campaign, ask them, where’s our money? Until they answer your question, don’t listen to them,” she said.

Mr. Goodluck Obrogor, the only brother of Bashorun Askia, was the cynosure of all eyes, when he led 177 defectors to denounce the PDP and pledge loyalty to APC.

In his defection speech, Mr. Obrogor said the Uzere people are in the throes of oppression and intimidation and pleaded with Deputy Senate President, and Delta State governorship candidate of the APC, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, to help them.

“Obarisi, please see this place as your own home and come and set us free from the shackles of slavery imposed on us by the PDP,” he said.

Others who decamped were James Miller, former Personal Assistant to the majority leader of the Delta State House of Assembly; Olotu Ode, Uzere community youth leader; Fred Uye, Edafe Agbaka, and other members of the Uzere youth movement.

Others included Okpokoro Precious, Azinoh Urieh, Adaka Frank, Ewomazino Ojabekie, Obi Endurance, Endurance Oluku and Ezekiel Urete.

James Igbi, the former Deputy governorship candidate of the ADC, led a cross section of party leaders and elders in Uzere to decamp to the APC.

In Aviara, former members of the PDP led by Ureghe John-Mark, an Aviara ward executive member, tore PDP cards and also decamped to the APC.

Speaking, John-Mark said Aviara people have been used and dumped, and that they are fed up with PDP and have decided to pitch tent with APC.

Reacting to the gale of defections, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege said by the sincere decision of former leaders and supporters of PDP to dump the party and embrace APC, Bahorun Askia and Okowa have passed judgement on themselves.

“They should know that the time of politics of intimidation is over. They know me and I know them. I can’t be intimidated.”

He lamented that Uzere, the second place after Oloibiri where oil was discovered in Nigeria still looks decrepit after over N4.3 trillion oil revenues generated from Uzere and other oil producing communities in Delta, accrued to the state.

“Is this Uzere, the oil rich producing community? Did you offend Okowa? How could Askia be so comfortable with making Uzere people Internally Displaced Persons during floods? With the resources from Uzere you are not supposed to have problems with flooding. Instead of Askia to use his office to help his people he chose to intimidate them.

“Uzere does not look like an oil producing Community. By God’s grace, when I become governor I will consult with illustrious indigenes to ask them what the incoming government should do for Uzere.”

At Aviara, he told the people that that Okowa is deceiving himself, but he will not be vice president. Our next president, he said, is Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and our Vice President will be Senator Kassim Shettima, both of the APC.

He urged the people of Aviara to come out on election day, stare down PDP and Okowa and vote all APC candidates. He assured supporters of adequate security on election day, and urged them not to fear intimidation by the opposition.

At the palace of the traditional ruler of Aviara, HRH, Efadue Imo, Ebobo 1, the Ovie of Aviara, he assured that he would ensure that Aviara community is fully linked to the national grid. He also promised to consult with the traditional ruler to address other challenges of the community.

The defectors were received by the Delta State APC Chairman, Elder Omeni Sobotie, who described the younger brother of Chief Askia Ogieh as the biblical Jacobian twin that has seen the light and prayed that Uzere never experience bad leadership and darkness again.

  • INTERVIEW: My reason for going into politics is people-centric – Oborevwori, Delta PDP guber candidate

INTERVIEW: My reason for going into politics is people-centric – Oborevwori, Delta PDP guber candidate

…says I am the most qualified candidate to take over from Gov. Okowa

… the welfare and security of Deltans is going to be my watchword if voted Governor

… the welfare and security of Deltans is going to be my watchword if voted Governor

Rt Hon Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori, is a grassroots politician who in the last two decades had exhibited rare dexterity in the political affairs of Delta State. He is the incumbent speaker of the State House of Assembly, in this interview with selected journalists, he spoke extensively on many burning issues including his emergence, ambition, vision, and the PDP in the State.

Please, can we meet and know you by way of self-introduction?

“I am Chief Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori. I am from Osubi in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State. I am the incumbent Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and also the Delta State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). I am married with children. Thank you”.

So, why do you want to be Governor of Delta State?

“To answer that question, I should begin by telling you about my mission in politics. It is really about the people. And I have come to understand quite early in life that the most important means of affecting the people for good is politics. When I was growing up, I saw a lot of deprivation and poverty in society and my biggest wish was to see how I can be of help to free people from lack and deprivation. As I went through primary and secondary schools the role of politics and government in making life better for the people was made central in our social studies, government and economics lessons and textbooks. We also got taught that the surest and legitimate way into government is politics. So from childhood I carried the burden of taking up the responsibility of making life better for the people. That was my motivation. Now joining politics at the grassroots saw me growing and evolving. I served as a councilor and I also served different governments as special assistant, senior special assistant and as special adviser. I made sure I put the interest of the people and loyalty to the government above my personal consideration.

“Then the good people of Okpe constituency decided that they wanted me to represent them in the Delta State House of Assembly. I contested and won the election and became a member of the State House of Assembly. Not too long after, my colleagues and fellow lawmakers elected me as the Speaker of the House and by that I became the head of an arm of government in Delta State. This marked a turning point in my political career and evolution. I was no longer just a Member representing the Okpe constituency, but the Speaker presiding over the State legislature. That act made me a Pan-Deltan and it changed my consciousness and perception”.

“As Speaker of the State House of Assembly, the entire state became my constituency. That position enabled me to appreciate what Delta State is all about, her development aspirations, her challenges, and the colourations and preferences of the people. After the general elections in 2019, my colleagues in the House of Assembly expressed a vote of confidence in me by returning me as Speaker for a second time, that gesture opened my eyes to new vistas of possibilities for me and Delta State. My return as Speaker is unprecedented in the history of Delta State. My colleagues said that they were returning me as Speaker because I am a Pan-Deltan and that I easily build consensus. They also said that I showed a deep understanding of the development challenges of Delta State and that for the State to develop without obstruction, I should continue to lead the legislative arm. I took time to evaluate what my colleagues said and I realized that I have unconsciously promoted politics in the service of the people in the House of Assembly and by extension the State. I soon started receiving encouragements to take my peoples’ politics ideology higher by seeking to be governor of Delta State. I am not one to run away from a challenge especially when it has to do with people.

“I thought seriously about it. I also prayed. As a political scientist who is in practical politics, I thought of so many possibilities. I sat down to collate my thoughts arising from my burning desire to use politics to promote the welfare of the people. I also asked myself, after speakership, what next? How else do I serve the interest of the people? It was at that point that I resolved and listened to the call to run for the governorship of Delta State. So, the response to your question on why I want to be governor is to serve the people of Delta State and enhance their welfare and security. My reason and justification is people-centric. It is all for the people”.

Do you have what it takes to be governor of Delta State?

“Yes, I have more than what it takes. Besides the basic points of being a Deltan and the age as well as the basic educational qualification, I am most qualified to be the Governor of Delta State. I am well educated in the art and science of politics having studied political science up to postgraduate level. I also must point at my experience in politics. I have been a councilor at the local government level. I was special assistant, senior special assistant and special adviser handling very sensitive positions. I then crossed over to the legislature after winning an election. I have been elected Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly twice and I am the only one to be so elected and the longest serving Speaker in the history of Delta State. So far, I have worked with three governors since 2003 when I was appointed as a special assistant.

“I have both legislative and executive experience. As Speaker, the entire state is one big constituency for me and apart from the incumbent Governor, His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, no other politician has the kind of knowledge that I have about Delta State in terms of her development aspirations and challenges. Besides these, I have also undergone political leadership and management courses in some of the best universities in the world. I am well trained in executive and legislative leadership, development studies, ICT, advanced leadership and the New World Order in universities in the United Kingdom and the United States. I have acquired skills and strategies in creative and critical thinking, development thinking and modern governance. I have what it takes. My capacity is formidable”.

What about the controversy about your educational qualifications?

“It is unfortunate that what was supposed to be a minor mistake arising from names used and names not used in the course of schooling was twisted to cause mischief in an attempt to undo me. Let the truth be told. Many people who have three or more names have used them differently at one point or the other. This was my case. The names that my detractors pointed at are all mine. There is no doubt about them whatsoever. The schools I attended at different times have the records and they can verify that the names refer to one and the same person which is me. I have never claimed that the schools I attended are no longer in existence. I can direct you to my schools from primary, secondary to university. I am well educated. I might not have gone to school in quick succession due to my background, but I had the benefit of western education up to postgraduate degree which is the Master of Science degree in political science that I obtained from the Delta State University, Abraka. My school mates and many of my teachers at different stages of my education are alive. I affirm that my educational qualifications are solid and genuine”.

What do you think are the challenges or problems of Delta State?

“The challenges of Delta State are essentially the same with those of Nigeria and other Third World societies. The challenges which are also the problems include poverty, unemployment, inadequate electricity, inadequate ICT, infrastructure deficit, inadequate healthcare, poor education, low industrialization and poor agricultural productivity and insecurity. There are also problems associated with growing population and shrinking resources. There are other social ills like armed robbery, cybercrime, youth unrest and others which disrupt life occasionally, but once the major ones I mentioned are tackled and overcome then we would have a stable and prosperous society”.

What is your vision for Delta State and what do you want to do about the development challenges of the State?

“My vision for Delta State is double fold. First is to ensure the welfare and security of the people and second is to make sure that the State and her people are not left behind in the race to the New World Order which is anchored on the Fourth Industrial Revolution. If you look at the challenges that I enumerated which are also the challenges of Nigeria, they are the roadblocks which I am set to dismantle. I must admit that previous administrations and the present one ably led by Governor Okowa have done so much for the State to prepare us to take off and to go higher. There are already things that we can build upon. In the education sector, we have primary and secondary schools and what we need is to recruit and re-train more teachers with incentives and then upgrade learning infrastructure by introducing and promoting the use of ICT. Delta State has the highest number of tertiary institutions in Nigeria and we will encourage them to refocus and become solution providers to our challenges. Of course we will commit more funds, but we will make our tertiary institutions to become incubators of development.

“The healthcare sector is already receiving attention and we will build on what is on ground. I am aware that our health insurance scheme is the best in Nigeria having crossed the 80% national threshold. So we shall expand and upgrade our health facilities including the tertiary health sector to modern global standards with the hope of providing good medicare for our people and also making Delta State a medical tourism hub. This is possible. I envisage an energy revolution by way of power supply to all parts of the State no matter how remote. We hope to replicate the IPP model that has given Asaba capital territory and environs stable power supply across the State. We have plans to explore alternative power sources through renewable energy. Our science and engineering faculties and schools will be positioned to produce solar, wind and hydro power. Two other issues have to do with agriculture and industrialization. We need to get our people back to farming through the mechanized mode. Delta State has a vast arable land that can support uncountable number of food and cash crops. My team has produced a list of over 100 food and cash crops that do well in every part of Delta State. We hope to focus on the comparative advantage of each area or community. For example cassava and its value chain can earn Delta State over $20 billion dollars per annum while the oil palm could double that figure if maximally cultivated.

“What we need to do is to revive agriculture. Delta State can produce enough food to feed the entire South-South and part of the South-East and even have enough for export. We will galvanize agriculture and bring our industries back. We will work with the Federal Government to revive the Warri Port and let it function maximally and open the opportunity for international trade for our people. We will set up a committee to evaluate all the moribund industries in the State, both private and government owned, and see how government through public private partnership (PPP) can intervene and revive them. I have a blueprint for that. We already have two functional airports that will enable investors to fly in and out to do business in Delta State. It is part of my blueprint to further secure the State by enhancing peace and security thereby making the State an investment hub in the South-South and South-East due to our proximity with that region. We also intend to get the oil companies to return to Delta State so that the State can retain her position as the leading oil and gas industry state in Nigeria. I have seen the youths as our biggest capital. We have plans to give them a reorientation beginning from deploying civic education and ICT from primary to secondary through our tertiary education.

“Delta State already has a variety of youth empowerment programmes that have engaged more than one million youths directly and indirectly in productive enterprises. What we want to do next is to put our youths on the global internet economic community and promote knowledge economy not through cybercrime, but through legitimate global commerce enabled by ICT”.

“We envisage an ICT revolution that will be targeted at the three senatorial districts so as to make quality internet services affordable and accessible to our people. Part of the big picture is the promotion of SMEs where many of our women and youth are involved. You can see that my emphasis and focus have been on the people wherever they are even in the remotest villages. Part of the plan is to enhance the transportation network to not only include roads, but water for riverine communities. We shall build other physical infrastructure and provide amenities to make life better for our people. We have commissioned a needs’ assessment per community in Delta State to enable me know the particular needs of each community. Life is dynamic and so is politics and development. Nation building is always work in progress so we shall engage new things as they come for the good of our people. What all our proposed programmes point to is the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Delta State will not miss it under my watch. To firm up my vision for Delta State, a think tank is working day and night to come up with a development strategy. I have charged the think tank to review previous development agenda and see what has not been done so that we can harmonize to match new and contemporary realities”.

Can you briefly talk about your manifesto and link it with your vision for Delta State?

“Sure. My manifesto is anchored on the aspirations of the people of Delta State and it is the product of months of brainstorming during which I was advised to read the programme of action of societies or nations that came out of the Third World. I was so advised because their conditions were similar to ours in Nigeria. So we thought that looking at what they did, comparing and localizing it in our context will help us. I focused a lot on Malaysia, Singapore, India, Botswana, and Rwanda. It was a painstaking work because I read a lot of books about their history, their struggle and their economy. As a trained political scientist, I knew some of these things, but now I had to read them with a lot of seriousness so that I can apply them to our situation. My team insisted that I must read and show an understanding of the situation of things in those countries and how they evolved before we do anything about the manifesto. I discovered that their idea of development was about the welfare and security of their people.

“I was happy in discovering that because I am actually in politics for the overall interest and good of the people. That was why at the end of the day we resolved that my manifesto should be about MORE which we coined from the standpoints on which the manifesto is resting which are Meaningful development, Opportunities for all, Realistic reforms, and Enhanced peace and security. Each of these legs is about the welfare and security of the people of Delta State.

“I have mentioned some of the statements of intentions when you asked about my vision for Delta State. But be rest assured that the manifesto is unique because it blends the local with the global in articulating a development agenda for Delta State. The manifesto takes cognizance of our challenges. It looks at what has been achieved and then goes on to strategically point at how to leverage on what has been achieved to take Delta State and her people into the Fourth Industrial Revolution driven by ICT and the knowledge economy is all about. So we are reaching out to the world from Delta State and very soon we can tell our own story of From Third World to First. It is very possible and the signs are there. We also have to deliberately carry out a lot of public service reforms. We must refocus our public service to be purpose-driven and result-oriented or else we will achieve nothing. The public service drives government and development. Let me say that my manifesto is really the people’s manifesto”.

What is your understanding of Delta State?

“Delta State is a multi-ethnic state and it is one of the most naturally endowed places on earth by virtue of her vast arable land that supports food and cash crops as well as many other natural resources including solid minerals. With a population of about five million people, the State has the capacity to undergo an agricultural revolution and industrialize. The State has the advantage of having many rivers and it is by the Atlantic Ocean. The State is dynamic and it is a mini Nigeria in terms of her diversity, talents and resource endowments. I do not want to emphasize on the State’s oil and gas resources, but rather focus on the great use to which we can put our human and other natural resources especially in agriculture that will lead to industrialization. We are also famous for our talents as a people. We are very strong in education, sports, the creative and entertainment industries and in fact every area of human endeavor. Delta State is a leading state in Nigeria”.

Assess the PDP in Delta State since 1998 when it was formed

“The PDP is the dominant political party in Delta State. It has grown very strong and it is waxing stronger daily. I think it is only in Delta State that you still find a majority of the founding fathers of the PDP still alive and still with the party. The founding fathers saw tomorrow which is now today and they groomed younger people who have become active leaders today. We have had occasional disagreements which are normal, but the PDP in Delta State remains as one big family. Its influence is felt in every home, every unit, every ward and in every local government area of Delta State. The party has ruled Delta State since 1999 and it will continue to do so. The people of Delta State have come to embrace the party especially in view of the disaster that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has brought on Nigeria and Delta State since 2015”.

What are your chances of becoming governor?

“My chances are very bright. In fact I have the brightest of chances among all the governorship candidates. You know my emergence has a history. I was among the twelve governorship aspirants screened by the governorship screening committee of the DC-23 for four months. I was among the three shortlisted aspirants. Then we went for the PDP governorship primaries which I won by a very wide margin. The people, from DC-23, to the delegates and now the overwhelming majority of Deltans are saying that I am the next governor. They have seen my manifesto that it is all about them. I am also taking my campaign message across the State. There are many interest groups declaring support for me every day. I receive endorsement daily. I was surprised to hear about the Sheriffication movement and many people are saying they are sheriffied. My chances are the brightest. I can assure you. The people see my governorship as their project which has been divinely endorsed”.

What do you have to say about your opponents?

“In truth and frankly speaking, I do not see them as my opponents. They are my friends, people that I know and once upon a time fellow PDP members especially the APC and the SDP candidates. They have their ideas about Delta State and I respect that. However, I believe that in the end when I would have emerged as Governor they will fold up their canopies and rejoin the PDP which is one big family with a big enough umbrella to cover all of us.

What is your relationship with former Governor, Chief James Ibori and Chief David Edevbie?

“I smell mischief in this question. But I must say it again that His Excellency, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, the former Governor of Delta State, is our leader and my leader. When I started this journey of becoming governor I went to consult him and he prayed for me. He remains my leader and he is supporting my ambition and all that I am doing. Chief David Edevbie is my brother. We contested against each other and we struggled for the ticket. He remains my brother and friend. There is a picture of the two of us shaking hands, embracing and laughing. That is the relationship between Chief Edevbie and I. People out there are saying a lot of things that are not true about us. Be rest assured that we have a good relationship”.

What do you have to say about the allegation of you being a stooge of the incumbent governor and also about the massive borrowing and indebtedness of Delta State?

“These are very unfair and unkind allegations. I am not a stooge and I have never been a stooge. I have been a grassroots politician all my life and somehow I know my way around in politics. The stories of borrowing and indebtedness in Delta State are also not true. They are exaggerated and manipulated by political enemies to make His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and the PDP to look bad and score cheap political points. The State Government using the appropriate organ has come out with explanations and I urge the people of Delta State to believe the explanation. The opposition is using lies and propaganda to want to deceive the people. Do not believe their lies. We must remember that that was how the APC told lies against President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014 and they deceived Nigerians. Look at what the APC has done to Nigeria. They brought our country to ruins. If not for the managerial skills of Governor Okowa, Delta State would have collapsed.

How many of the states governed by APC are paying salaries regularly?

“Delta State pays the highest wages in Nigeria. Delta State is also the best State in terms of human capital development as indicated in education, healthcare services, sports and workforce. Delta State has the highest number of state owned universities in Nigeria. Look at our world class technical and vocational schools. Look at the bridges completed and ongoing ones. Take a look at the Stephen Keshi Stadium that hosted the recent National Sports Festival best ever even by African standards. What about the Ogheye floating market the first of its kind in Africa? Apart from the bad federal roads, Delta State has the longest network of good roads in Nigeria. Governor Okowa has done well by matching human capital development with infrastructure and peace and security, but bad belle politics is making opposition politicians to tell lies. So the people should not allow the opposition elements to deceive them. They have nothing to offer other than lies and destruction. We have seen it at the national level”.

    What are your final words?

“I appeal to the good people of Delta State to vote for me and all PDP candidates all the way from the State to the national level. Delta State is on the momentum to greatness and we should not abort it. I have outlined a robust vision that will take our State work for the good of our people. This is possible and we can do it. Thank you”.
