Liverpool fullbacks enjoyed mocking Man Utd fans at Old Trafford

Liverpool fullbacks Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold enjoyed mocking the Old Trafford crowd after their 5-0 win at Manchester United.

The Liverpool Echo reports Alexander-Arnold was sarcastically waving to the home fans who were hurling abuse at him.

And Robertson also enjoyed his ceremonial walk around the pitch as he blew kisses at the United faithful.

Earlier, with his side 4-0 down after just 45 minutes, Cristiano Ronaldo showed his frustration in first half injury time as he aggressively kicked out at midfielder Curtis Jones while the ball was underneath him.

This provoked an instant reaction from the Liverpool players, namely Robertson who sprinted over to Ronaldo and pointed in his face, furious at the 36-year-old’s actions.

Despite Liverpool’s anger, referee Anthony Taylor opted to show the Portuguese forward a yellow card instead of a red.

Robertson was even more motivated following the incident, as was clearly shown when Mo Salah completed his hat-trick to make it 5-0.

The Scot ran over to celebrate with the Egyptian before sending a message of merciless encouragement to those around him.

He could be heard saying: “Keep going, keep going! Be ruthless!”

I’ll show Man Utd fans what I can do – Sancho

New Manchester United signing Jadon Sancho has said he hasn’t stopped smiling since arriving at Old Trafford.

Speaking to UMM, Sancho has vowed to replicate his form from Dortmund at Manchester.

He said: “I haven’t stopped smiling. I’m just happy to be here and be part of the Red Devils and the team.

“Especially when I made my debut – the lads have been very good with me and made it easier.

“I’m going to keep playing my game. I’m not going to change what I’ve been doing over in Germany. I’ve just got to bring it here and hopefully I can show the fans what I can deliver.”

  • Man Utd confirm Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford

Man Utd confirm Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford

Manchester United have announced the return of Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford after completing his signing from Juventus.

    United have paid 15m euros (£12.85m) – and a possible 8m euros (£6.85m) in add-ons – for the 36-year-old.

Ronaldo has signed a two-year contract with the Old Trafford club, with the option to extend for a further year.

He scored 118 goals in 292 appearances in his first spell at United before leaving for Real Madrid in 2009.

In a statement, United declared: “Manchester United is delighted to confirm the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo on a two-year contract with the option to extend for a further year, subject to international clearance.”

Ronaldo also said: “Manchester United is a club that has always had a special place in my heart, and I have been overwhelmed by all the messages I have received since the announcement on Friday.

“I cannot wait to play at Old Trafford in front of a full stadium and see all the fans again. I’m looking forward to joining up with the team after the international games, and I hope we have a very successful season ahead.”

  • Man Utd fullback: I need to experience full Old Trafford

Man Utd fullback: I need to experience full Old Trafford

Manchester United fullback Alex Telles says he wants to stay with the Red Devils in order to experience a full Old Trafford.

Telles was recently linked with a move to Inter Milan, with reports claiming the Brazil international could be used in a swap deal that would see Marcelo Brozovic head in the opposite direction.

But he told the club’s website: “So it has been really strange playing in empty stadiums and, honestly, it’s not easy.

“Obviously, a stadium full of our supporters gives you additional motivation. You’re filled with motivation when you go onto the pitch to warm up and you hear the noise of the entire stadium.

“We really miss it, we can’t wait for the stadiums to fill up again.

“It’s also good when we play away, it’s good to hear the boos and whistles as this also motivates you in a different way.

“We know that it’s part of the footballing spectacle and we hope that they’ll be back soon. I think the only thing that football is lacking right now is the fans.

“It’s everything about the noise: it’s when you score a goal or even when you don’t score but come close, and there’s that ‘almost’ sensation in the air. When you’re tired, the shouting fans drive you on and give you additional motivation. You play for yourself and the team but you also play for the fans.

“Sadly I haven’t had the chance to play in front of United fans yet, but I’ve only heard great things and I’ve looked through supporters’ videos on YouTube.

“Sometimes, when I see the videos on social media from games in a full Old Trafford it really motivates me.

“It moves me to want to play in front of a full Old Trafford crowd. I can’t wait for this to happen but we know that for this to happen people need to be conscientious today so we can be together again further down the line.

“Then, when we are finally all together, we will focus on winning together.”

  • McTominay faults VAR after PSG loss at Old Trafford

McTominay faults VAR after PSG loss at Old Trafford

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay was not happy with VAR after his team’s 3-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

McTominay started the game in central midfield and put in a decent shift for his side.

United were well in the game until Marquinhos gave PSG a 2-1 lead against the run of play, before Fred got a second yellow minutes later.

Then PSG had control of the tie, and eventually scored a third on the break through Neymar, who also got their first goal.

Marcus Rashford scored United’s only goal of the game.

“I’m hearing their goal was partly offside as well. For us where is the balance in the game with how the referee has approached decisions?” McTominay told BT Sport after the game.

“We’re seeing mistakes week in, week out, for us it has to be rectified, get football back to the way it was (before VAR).”

Everyone wants to follow Arteta, says Aubameyang after Man Utd win

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says everyone at the london club wants to follow Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners moved up to ninth with a 1-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday, their first win at Old Trafford in 14 years.

Asked whether the victory changes the feel around our start to the season, Aubameyang said: “For sure. We knew since the beginning that we had to trust the process.

“Mikel is bringing something very nice and everyone wants to follow him.”

And when quizzed how big the win was, Aubameyang said: Very big. It’s been a very tough night but I’m really happy because the team played very well tonight. It’s been a long time without a win here, so of course it’s a big win.

“At half-time we were concerned we hadn’t scored but we knew that in the second half we had to score because we had some opportunists in the first half.

“We managed the first half well and then in the second half we managed to score. After that, everyone wanted to defend as a squad. We did that well and I’m happy.”

Aubameyang penalty gives Arsenal win at Old Trafford

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored his first league goal since the opening weekend of the season as Arsenal edged out Manchester United at a rain-soaked Old Trafford.

The Gabon forward broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 69th minute after Paul Pogba had clipped the heel of Hector Bellerin in the area.

There were very few other chances.

Willian’s effort struck the bar, while a strike from substitute Donny van de Beek came off the post late on.

The Gunners now have 12 points and are up to eighth and United remain in 15th on seven points.

  • De Gea’s howler gifts Chelsea point at Old Trafford

David de Gea made a third costly goalkeeping error in the space of four games as Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw at home to top-four rivals Chelsea last night.

Juan Mata had given United a deserved first-half lead against his former employers in what had been dubbed a “must-win” match for the hosts, but De Gea’s mistake gifted an equaliser to Marcos Alonso as Chelsea boosted their hopes of Champions League qualification.

The result leaves Maurizio Sarri’s side still fourth in the table and two points above fifth-placed Arsenal, whereas United must overhaul a three-point deficit as well as their inferior goal difference during the final two games of the season.

The importance of the game was increased by defeats for Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal earlier in the weekend, and United in particular began like a team who knew their top-four hopes depended on winning.

The hosts created their first big chance after just four minutes when Luke Shaw’s long pass forward beat the entire Chelsea defence to leave Romelu Lukaku through on goal, but the Belgian took too long over his finish and was eventually denied by Kepa Arrizabalaga.

United would not have to wait long to break the deadlock, though, as Mata marked his 31st birthday with a goal against his former club after a scooped Lukaku pass had released Shaw, who cut the ball back into the middle for Mata to convert.

Chelsea were largely limited to long-range efforts for much of the first half, with Alonso and Jorginho failing to test David de Gea when trying their luck.

De Gea would go on to fail the first test which came his way from another long-range strike, but United almost doubled their advantage before that when Eric Bailly came close to marking his return to the team with a goal, sending a towering header just wide on the half-hour mark.

A two-goal lead would not have flattered a United side who were putting in one of their best performances in recent weeks, but they then found themselves level with just two minutes remaining of the half as De Gea made another howler to gift Chelsea an equaliser.

Antonio Rudiger’s 30-yard strike should have been simple for the keeper, but he spilled it into a dangerous area and Alonso was following up to convert the rebound – a third error leading directly to a goal from De Gea’s last four games, which is as many as he committed in his previous 123 outings for the club.

Kepa Arrizabalaga showed his compatriot how it should be done when collecting a long-range Marcus Rashford free kick five minutes into the second half, and the Chelsea keeper was called upon again shortly afterwards to keep out Bailly’s tame effort.

  • Solskjaer enthusiastic of Old Trafford return after Mourinho’s exit

Solskjaer enthusiastic of Old Trafford return after Mourinho’s exit

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can’t wait to lead Manchester United out at Old Trafford for the first time on Wednesday against relegation-threatened Huddersfield.

Having been parachuted in as caretaker manager for the rest of the season, the former United strike got the post-Jose Mourinho era off to a dream start.

United ran amok at Solskjaer’s former club Cardiff on Saturday, scoring five goals in a Premier League game for the first time since Alex Ferguson retired in May 2013 as they left the Welsh capital buoyed by a 5-1 win.

Of course, you try to keep your emotion in check because I’m there to do a job, I’ve got to be focused,” Solskjaer said. “It’s not easy, I don’t think it will be easy, but I’m looking forward to it and I think the boys are looking forward to playing at Old Trafford.

That’s the key, we should be looking forward to playing there.”

Solskjaer is looking to become just the fifth manager in United’s history to start with back-to-back league wins.

Sixth-placed United have managed to win just five of 12 matches at Old Trafford in all competitions so far in this disappointing campaign, with the pressure appearing to be too much for players at times.

  • Boxing: Tyson Fury wants Wilder rematch at Old Trafford

Boxing: Tyson Fury wants Wilder rematch at Old Trafford

Britain’s Tyson Fury says he wants his WBC heavyweight rematch with Deontay Wilder to take place at Manchester United’s Old Trafford ground.

Fury, 30, was awarded a controversial draw after his bout with champion Wilder in Los Angeles on Saturday.

The Manchester-born fighter, who watched United’s Premier League match against Arsenal on Wednesday evening, said he is eyeing up a UK venue next.

“Frank Warren said Arsenal but I said ‘no, let’s have it at Old Trafford’”.

Wearing a Manchester United scarf, Fury told BT Sport during half-time of the match that the fight would “hopefully be in the summer”.

And when asked about the possible result for Jose Mourinho’s side, he joked: “I don’t like draws, I only like wins.”

Saturday’s fight was scored 115-111 for Wilder, 114-112 for Fury and 113-113, with Alejandro Rochin the judge who had the American as the winner.

Fury said he had “never seen a worse decision in my life” and described it as a “gift” for his opponent.

In an Instagram post in response, Wilder, 33, said: “You saw the best Fury but you did not get the best Wilder and I still managed to get the job done.”
