Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained taking the Besiktas job.

Solskjaer has signed an 18 month deal with the Black Eagles.

At his presentation on Sunday, Solskjaer said: “I actually had other offers, but I had a good life in Norway. There had to be an offer that was worth giving up my life for. Istanbul is a fantastic city, I couldn’t say no to this offer. If I hadn’t accepted, I would have regretted it long before I died.

“The project here is similar to that of Manchester United. At United we also finished the season in sixth place, and then we grew step by step. We want to win, but we also want to be realistic. We have to stop the negative trend.”

Solskjaer also said: “I haven’t spoken to José Mourinho (Fenerbahce coach) yet. He is an extraordinary manager, a name that has achieved a lot of success. I can’t wait to meet him again and I have great respect for him.”

He continued: “We had excellent meetings with our president and we also found each other on a human level. The bonds that we will build in this team are very important. Here we will build a new base. This was something I really wanted. Our president touched my heart and that of the technical staff.

“While I worked at UEFA (as a Match Analyst.), I followed the games and Beşiktaş. I am proud to be in a club like this.

“I know what the fans want. We will work every day for this. I am here only to win. We have players who are used to winning. Beşiktaş is a team that deserves victories. I have always aimed for this both as a player and as a coach, and that is why I came here.”

Carrick will be Man Utd manager if… – Solskjaer

Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can see Michael Carrick eventually returning to Old Trafford.

Carrick has thrived as Middlesbrough manager this season in his first major management post.

Solskjaer told the Athletic of his former United No2: “Michael is a man of values and principles, a great family man, but his knowledge is also unsurpassed. He has had Sir Alex Ferguson and José Mourinho as coaches, and he has played with the best players in the world. He is a winner but he is still in control of his emotions.

“I can’t see him not becoming Manchester United coach. At United I sometimes saw Michael talking to the players. Some of these were former teammates of his, which is not easy, but he had an authority.

“I am 100 percent sure that Michael will become the manager of Manchester United if he wants to be.”

Good luck on going to the wrong side of Manchester – Solskjaer writes Haaland

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has revealed former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been in touch since he signed for Manchester City.

The pair worked together at Molde and Solskjaer tried to sign Haaland before he left RB Salzburg for Borussia Dortmund.

“When I signed with City he congratulated me and wrote to me ‘Good luck on going to the wrong side of Manchester’. We talk sometimes. As you know, he had a huge impact on my career when I was at Molde. He’s a good guy,” he told the Manchester Evening News.

“Three years ago City didn’t want me because they had [Sergio] Aguero up front so then there was no choice about coming to Man City.

“Basically, my feeling was I felt more going to the other place than coming here to England. I could have come here a lot of times in my career but I felt the other place and I think it was a really good choice.

“I have made perfect choices ever since I went to Molde, then Salzburg and Dortmund. I’m not complaining about that.”

Manchester United fell to the disappointing Premier League defeat at Watford on Saturday afternoon, as the hosts scored twice in each half.

It was an afternoon to forget for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team as the Red Devils lost their first match following the international break.

The encounter at Vicarage Road got off to a manic start with David De Gea saving not one but two Ismaila Sarr penalties as the Senegalese’s first attempt had to be retaken.

However, first-half goals from Joshua King and Ismaila Sarr ensured Claudio Ranieri’s side still went into the break two goals up.

Donny van de Beek joined Anthony Martial in coming off the bench at the start of the second half and the Dutchman restored hope for the Reds by scoring swiftly, in the 50th minute.

A turnaround seemed possible but when Harry Maguire was sent off for collecting two yellow cards, it made United’s comeback task more difficult.

In stoppage time, Joao Pedro and Emmanuel Dennis put the game to bed as the Hornets ran out 4-1 winners under the floodlights.

  • Intense pressure can make Man Utd better team, embattled Solskjaer says

Intense pressure can make Man Utd better team, embattled Solskjaer says

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says the intense pressure he and his struggling stars are under can make Manchester United a better team as they seek to rescue their faltering season.

United travel to Watford on Saturday licking their wounds after four defeats in their past six Premier League matches, including chastening home losses to Liverpool and Manchester City.

They are sixth in the table, five points adrift of the top four and nine points behind leaders Chelsea.

“We know the poor run of form puts ourselves under pressure but that pressure should be a joy, it should be something that makes us a better team and makes every player perform at their best level,” Solskjaer said at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

The Norwegian was asked directly if he felt safe in his job as action resumes following the international break.

“The players, the staff, myself, and the club, we are all working towards one goal and that’s for this team to improve and get better results,” Solskjaer said.

“The fans are still supporting the team and the club. They’ve been through this period and backed this team through the rebuild.

“You know when you lose a game you’re always disappointed and under pressure. We’ve communicated well and openly and honestly.

“There’s one game now that matters but also there’s what goes on after that. We’re all refreshed, this week has been really good in training and we’re ready for tomorrow.”

Responding to reports that Jesse Lingard’s contract talks had broken down, with the England midfielder looking to leave United, Solskjaer said: “Jesse is training really hard, really well, and he’s ready and available for me. Definitely, he’s disappointed he hasn’t played more of course.

“With regards to his contract situation and the talks, I’ve not been in those very closely. For me, Jesse is still part of this squad, an important part, and he gives energy and quality to the group every day.”

  • Solskjaer Vows To Stay As Man Utd Boss Despite Liverpool Thrashing

Solskjaer Vows To Stay As Man Utd Boss Despite Liverpool Thrashing

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted he is the right man to manage Manchester United despite a historic hammering by Liverpool on Sunday as Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 rout at Old Trafford.

For the first time in Premier League history, United trailed 4-0 at half-time and lost by five goals without scoring at home for the first time since 1955.

The Red Devils have now taken one point from a possible 12 in the league to fall to seventh, eight points off leaders Chelsea.

“I do believe in myself, that I am getting close to what I want with the club,” said Solskjaer.

“The results lately haven’t been good enough, that brings doubt in anyone’s mind, but I’ve got to keep strong and believe in what we’ve been doing.”

Naby Keita started the rout before Diogo Jota doubled Liverpool’s lead inside 15 minutes.

Salah then took centre stage to take his tally for the season to 15 goals in 12 appearances and become the top-scoring African player in Premier League history in the process.

To round off a miserable day for United, Paul Pogba lasted less than 15 minutes as a second-half substitute as he was shown a straight red card for a reckless lunge that forced Keita to leave the pitch on a stretcher.

Liverpool’s first victory in front of a crowd at Old Trafford under Jurgen Klopp moves them back above Manchester City into second, just a point behind Chelsea.

“What we did in the last third was insane. Pressing high, winning balls, scored wonderful goals,” said Klopp after Liverpool’s record away win against United.

“The result is insane. I asked if there was one like this in history and if there isn’t then it will take a while (to beat).”

By contrast, United’s hopes of a first league title since 2013 already look over.

That gap is likely to grow in the coming weeks with Tottenham and City to come in the next fortnight before an international break.

Whether Solskjaer will still be in charge come November is now in serious doubt as he has completely failed to form a balanced team from a talented collection of star players.

“In the last few weeks we’ve hit a brick wall,” added Solskjaer. “The performances haven’t come, the results haven’t come. We’ve conceded too many easy goals and that’s a concern.”

Salah teed up Keita to open the floodgates after just five minutes with a composed low finish past David de Gea.

United came from 2-0 down at the break to beat Atalanta 3-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday.
