Man Utd bigger than Man City – Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still believes Manchester United are a bigger club than Manchester City.

City are well placed to finish above their rivals for a seventh successive season, which has not happened since the 1930s.

The Blues have won three Premier League titles since the last of United’s 20 successes in 2013.

Asked before Saturday’s Manchester derby whether he still regarded United as being bigger, Solskjaer said: “Yes.”

The United manager added: “It’s inarguable we are too far behind but what are we going to do? Give up? Not challenge them?”

In trophy terms it will take City a long time to catch United but, off the pitch, City are closing in on United’s financial superiority.

However, City manager Pep Guardiola feels there is more to being a big club than purely silverware.

“For United’s fans, they’ll always be the biggest club. For the City fans, they’ll always be the biggest club. It doesn’t matter if you have had a lot of success in the past, it’s part of what you feel,” Guardiola said.

Why I’m not bothered about being sacked – Solskjaer

Following a poor start to the season, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that he is not bothered about facing the sack.

Premier League has witnessed some high profile sacking in recent weeks with Mauricio Pochettinho, Unai Emery, and Quique Sanchez Flores being shown the door at Tottenham, Arsenal, and Watford respectively.

United are ninth in the league, 22 points behind leaders Liverpool, eight off the final Champions League qualifying place, and just six points above the relegation zone in their worst start in 31 years.

United face Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City within a week but Solskjaer is not bothered about facing the sack, “No it doesn’t make me more concerned.

“I’m just focusing on my job and that’s doing as well as I can, looking forward to the next game, but also look long term, plan things with board.

“It’s that time of year, it’s never nice to see your colleagues lose your jobs, three in a very short space of time.

  • EPL: Mourinho, Solskjaer fire back at Klopp

The journey from the bench to the pundit’s studio is so quick in the modern game that some could be forgiven for thinking Manchester United had two managers after Sunday’s game.

Manchester United had a 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford.

So, after Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp criticised Manchester United’s tactics and said their opening goal should have been ruled out for a foul, he received a surprising response.

It came not only from his Manchester United counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but also Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho was in charge of the club until he was sacked in December last year.

Klopp had made some pointed comments about the way Solskjaer set Manchester United up with a 5-3-2 formation and the way they focused on frustrating his side.

They had won all eight of their previous matches in the 2019/2020 English Premier League (EPL).

“Manchester United had momentum in the first half because they were purely there to defend against us,” said Klopp, who has yet to win at Old Trafford with Liverpool.

“Since I’m in England Manchester United always played like this,” he continued.

“I’m not the person who should be frustrated by Manchester United’s style. In the last years they just defend. That’s how it is, it’s no criticism, it’s just a fact,” he added.

“When you think Manchester United versus Liverpool, you think both teams attacking. But it’s not,” he said.

Solskjaer rejected the suggestion his team were defensive, saying they had been set up to pressure and attack.

And, he quickly received some support from his predecessor, who was more than once accused of “parking the bus” at Anfield.

Mourinho said Klopp had clearly not enjoyed the way Manchester United made the game difficult for Liverpool.

“He didn’t like the menu. He likes meat and he got fish. So, he was not happy,” said Mourinho, who noted that Solskjaer’s tactics had worked.

“They are of course much stronger against opponents who give them a chance of transitions and counter-attacks. Manchester United didn’t do that. And he didn’t like the menu.”

“They were organised. They had a plan. You can agree or disagree, but they had a game plan, they stuck to it.

“If I was Ole I would be proud, and a little bit frustrated, because I think the boys gave everything,” said Mourinho who had heard his name sung by Manchester United fans in the Stretford end.

Klopp was also upset that referee Martin Atkinson had not seen what he considered a foul by Victor Lindelof on Divock Origi

This was at the start of the move that led to Manchester United’s goal.

The German was annoyed that VAR had not overturned the goal but Solskjaer, unsurprisingly perhaps, felt the referee was correct in his verdict.

“Foul? No chance. We’re not playing basketball. He touched him, but it’s not a clear and obvious error,” he said.

EPL: Man Utd will reinforce squad in January – Solskjaer

Manchester United will try to sign one or two players in the January transfer window to improve their chances of finishing in the top four, but will not spend big on transfer fees and wages, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said.

United are 12th in the Premier League ahead of Sunday’s home game against league leaders Liverpool after a poor start to the season that has been further disrupted by injuries to key players.

Solskjaer sanctioned the departures of forwards Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez in the close season without reinforcing United’s attack and the Norwegian also has goalkeeper David De Gea and midfielder Paul Pogba out injured.

“We’re looking at one or two new signings. We’re one or two players light.

“If the right ones are available in January then we might do something. If not, these players will give everything (for a top four finish).

“I’m not going to go down the route of bringing players in on big contracts and fees if they’re not the right ones for the whole group and for the future.

“The money is there to strengthen in January and in the summer,” Solskjaer said.

United started the season with a 4-0 win over Chelsea but have scored five goals in seven league matches since and Solskjaer said an injury to forward Anthony Martial, who has not played since August, was a factor in their struggles.

“There are many reasons, but one of them is injuries to Anthony. Creating chances has been a challenge for us with teams dropping deep.

“But we’re practising patterns every single week. When we get the players fit.

“I’m going to make Marcus and Anthony score those scruffy goals, as that’s what I did,” the 46-year-old former United player said.

Carabao Cup: Solskjaer explains Pogba captaincy snub

Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has explained why he took the decision to hand the captain’s armband to Axel Tuanzebe on Wednesday, not Paul Pogba.

Tuanzebe was given the honour in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup third-round clash at home against Rochdale.

The 21-year-old defender has admitted his surprise at being passed the armband, with the likes of World Cup winner Pogba in the same starting XI, but Solskjaer wanted to mix things up.

Solskjaer told talkSPORT: “Axel is a captain in the making, he’s a leader – why not give to young kids?

“We know we can give it to Sergio [Romero] and we can give it to Paul, that’s no problem and they’ve been captains before.

“But it was Axel today and how does he handle it? He was absolutely fine, he enjoyed it.

“It’s just a way of telling him that we trust him.”

EPL: Paul Pogba ready to face Arsenal

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba will return to first-team action at home to Rochdale in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, before playing against Arsenal.

United host the League One side in the third round of the Carabao Cup and will be boosted by the return of Pogba, who has missed the last three games against Leicester, Astana and West Ham due to an ankle injury.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed he will rotate his squad and the France international is going to play some part before a pivotal Premier League clash with Arsenal on Monday Night Football.

Solskjaer said: “He’ll probably get some minutes against Rochdale. But we definitely think he’s ready for Arsenal.”

  • Solskjaer says media have an agenda against Pogba

Solskjaer says media have an agenda against Pogba

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has moved to hose down speculation that Paul Pogba is unhappy and set to leave the club.
In doing so on Wednesday, the Norwegian declared that the media have an “agenda” against the French 2018 FIFA World Cup winner.
Pogba’s agent recently said the troubled 26-year-old intends to leave Manchester United, while the player, himself, said in Tokyo last month that he thought it might be time for a
    “new challenge somewhere else”.
Serie A club Juventus and La Liga giants Real Madrid have been linked with Pogba.
The speculation has followed Manchester United to Australia on their pre-season tour ahead of a match against A-League side Perth Glory on Saturday.
Pogba has two years left on his contract, with the option for a third, however, and Solskjaer hit out at media for indulging in the transfer talk.
“Agents talk all the time. As I said, we’ve not had any bids from any clubs,” he told reporters in Perth on Wednesday.
“That’s all I can say about this matter.
“There is an agenda against Paul. He’s a top, top bloke. A great professional. There’s never been any problems and he’s got a heart of gold.”
Pogba moved to Old Trafford from Juventus for a then-world record transfer fee of £89.3 million in August 2016.
He was named in last season’s PFA Premier League Team of the Year and has scored 31 goals in 142 appearances in all competitions.
But he has frustrated fans with his inconsistency, and a series of low-key performances last season culminated in clashes with angry supporters in the final-day home defeat by relegated Cardiff.
Manchester United posted a video of the team taking a stroll through Perth on its social media accounts earlier in the week.
But the upbeat soundtrack of electronic music could not disguise what appeared to be a heated exchange between Pogba and team mate Jesse Lingard.
Grinning defender Victor Lindelof came between the pair and threw an arm around Pogba as they continued walking but the moment sparked speculation of a rift in the camp.
Solskjaer said there was nothing in it.
“For example, Jesse and Paul walking around and it’s been portrayed as a fight between the two boys,” he said.
“I know you’re here to sell papers and sell stories but that’s nothing, no problems between the boys at all. They’re all professional. Pre-season has been very, very good so far.”
Manchester United kick off their new league campaign against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Aug. 11.

  • Solskjaer has no doubts De Gea will return to form

Solskjaer has no doubts De Gea will return to form

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says David de Gea has the strength of character to rebound from a slew of mistakes in recent weeks and has no intention of dropping the goalkeeper for the final two games of the season.

The Spaniard’s latest error came in Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Chelsea.

United had gone ahead through Juan Mata but Chelsea equalised when De Gea weakly parried Antonio Rudiger’s effort into the path of Marcos Alonso, who tucked the ball in.

De Gea has made a number of uncharacteristic mistakes in recent games but Solskjaer says the goalkeeper cannot take the blame for the team’s struggles.

“I don’t have any worries about him because he’s a strong character,” Solskjaer told British media. “He knows he could have had that shot but that’s football.”

The result leaves United sixth in the league on 65 points and dented their hopes of securing a top-four finish. They sit three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with two games left.

“With David, he’s been in the spotlight for right reasons for so long and now he’s going through a period where he feels he could have done better,” Solskjaer added.

“But there’s no chance any of us will point fingers because he’s saved us so many times. I’ll speak to David as I’ve done when he’s played well… he’s not the reason we’re sixth.”

United’s last two games of the season are against Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City.

  • EPL: Solskjaer admits Man City have set a new standard

EPL: Solskjaer admits Man City have set a new standard

Manchester United Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made no attempt to disguise the gulf in quality between his team and Manchester City, describing Pep Guardiola’s side as “the best team in the country” after they won 2-0 at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

“They have set the standard in the last two seasons and I don’t know how many points they’ve taken.

“What Pep Guardiola has done with his players is remarkable and we are so close to it, in the vicinity so we feel it every day,” said the Norwegian.

Solskjaer had demanded his players react to their 4-0 loss to Everton on Sunday and United did begin the match with aggression, battling hard until City went ahead through Bernardo Silva in the 54th minute.

“We got a reaction and in the end we were beaten by a better team. But we got a reaction from fans and players and had a go.

“You can see the work rate was there, it wasn’t good enough though,” said the United boss.

“The players wanted to show they really care. The first half was positive; we were pleased at the break.

“Unfortunately, we conceded two sloppy goals in the second half that could have been avoided.

“Everyone can see what City has done over the last few years,” he said.

City strolled to victory in the second half with United flagging as they chased after a stream of precise passes from Guardiola’s side.

“There is a difference in quality. That is why they are top and we are where we are. They have set the standard. Living in Manchester we cannot be happy with that.

“It is up to us to close that gap and overtake them,” said Solskjaer.

“Today you can’t say that any of them didn’t run. You could see clearly an intent and focus. We just need to keep working on it,” he said.

United have lost seven of their last nine games in all competitions, a run of form which contrasts markedly with the positive start to Solskjaer’s reign in December.

A Champions League spot remains within their grasp, however, with United in sixth place, three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, who they play on Sunday.

“In the short term, we are still in the race for the top four and we know we must deliver a good performance against Chelsea,” said Solskjaer.

  • Pep Guardiola reacts over Solskjaer foul claims

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has dismissed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s claim that the Citizens will use tactical fouling to prevent Manchester United from counter-attacking in Wednesday’s crucial derby.

Guardiola’s City need a win to go back above Liverpool in the Premier League title race, while United will be looking to reignite their hopes of top-four finish at Old Trafford.

United manager Solskjaer said on Tuesday morning that he had ‘no doubt’ that City will ‘snap at your ankles and heels and kick you.’

When informed of Solskajer’s comments, Guardiola said: “Did he say that? With 75 per cent the average, or 65-70 per cent average of the ball, how do you do that?

“I never prepare a game in my 10 seasons as a manager thinking about these kind of things, never. And my players can talk better than me about that. The players who I had in Barcelona, Bayern Munich and here.

“I’m concerned about many, many other things about the game we have to play to beat them than these kind of things. Tomorrow in the press conference after the game you can ask him (Solskjaer) again about that.”
