  • Anthony Martial can score 20 goals a season – Solksjaer

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial can score more than 20 goals a season and should develop his career by emulating Cristiano Ronaldo, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Friday.

Martial, who extended his Manchester United deal until 2024 on Thursday, has scored 10 goals in all competitions this season.

He is only seven short of his career-best tally of 17 in his debut season at Old Trafford in 2015/2016.

When asked if Martial could score more than 20 goals a season, former Manchester United striker Solskjaer replied: “He has the capability.”

“I’d like him to make a few more runs in behind. He doesn’t miss chances… Those five or six extra goals that I used to do with tap-ins, by making those runs, go a long way.

“He’s a fantastic finisher, so he needs to get more chances. I keep telling him you need to read and sniff whether there’s going to be a chance.”

Solskjaer said Martial should look to model his career on Ronaldo.

The Portuguese scored 42 goals in all competitions in his penultimate season at the club to pick up the Ballon d’Or award in 2008.

“That’s up to any player if you make a decision on how to develop your own career. You talk about Cristiano’s career, what he’s made, how he’s got there… Cristiano was the best,” Solskjaer said.

The Norwegian confirmed Paul Pogba, who picked up a knock in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Burnley, was fit for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Leicester City.

Also, Martial could return after missing the last game due to injury.

“We’ve not had a proper session since the game. So, hopefully, both of them can get through that. Anthony will do some rehab work but I would imagine he will be involved,” Solskjaer added.

  • Burnley ends Solksjaer’s winning run at Old Trafford

Burnley ends Solksjaer’s winning run at Old Trafford

Manchester United caretaker manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s winning streak ended as Burnley held the Red Devils to a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.

United were facing their first defeat under Solskjaer until Paul Pogba scored from the penalty spot in the 87th minute and Victor Lindelof scrambled in a 92nd-minute equaliser.

Burnley had defended resolutely until conceding twice late on and were in front thanks to second-half goals from Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood.

Barnes smashed home from inside the penalty area at the start of the second half after a mistake by Andreas Pereira and Wood headed in Barnes’ cross in the 81st minute.

The draw means United drop points for the first time under Solskjaer, having won their previous eight games with the Norwegian in charge, and fail to move level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.

The point for Burnley moves the Clarets up a place to 15th, four points clear of the relegation zone.

  • Lukaku still big part of Man Utd squad – Solskjaer

Romelu Lukaku still has a key role to play at Manchester United despite starting just one match since Jose Mourinho was sacked as manager, says interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The £75m ex-Everton striker has played for just 74 minutes in Solskjaer’s six league games in charge, but started the FA Cup third-round win over Reading.

Solskjaer has favoured Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial.

But the Norwegian said Lukaku, 25, remains “a big part of the squad”.

Only Rashford and midfielder Paul Pogba have scored more than the three goals Lukaku has managed since Mourinho was sacked on 18 December.

With Alexis Sanchez and Juan Mata also trying to force their way into the United starting line-up, Solskjaer has a situation that reminds him of his time as a Red Devils player.

After moving to Old Trafford in 1996, Solskjaer scored 126 goals for United in 11 seasons.

He said: “I used to be one of four strikers when we played with two. Now we have six forwards and we play with three.

“There are enough games. It is about taking your chances when you get them.

“No-one is scoring as many as Romelu in training.”
