Why SDP deserve to rule Nigeria – Olu Falae

The founding Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Chief Olu Falae, on Thursday said that the party deserves to rule Nigeria and has what it takes to win the 2023 general elections.

Falae stated this at the official inauguration of the party’s new National Secretariat in Abuja on Thursday.

He said that when he decided to revive the party, some people thought it was impossible, but today the party had grown in number and strength across the country.

“SDP is the only party with the right technology, philosophy and manifesto. We deserve to rule Nigeria and by the grace of God we will be there.

“We have a good Presidential candidate in the person of Adewole Adebayo who has not only demonstrated his knowledge of law but history, anthropology, architecture, and other fields.

“We need someone with broad mind and education like Adebayo to lead our country.

“The party may not have a governor today, but I have no doubt that SDP will be in Aso rock and become governors in many state in 2023, “ Falae said.

He commended the party leadership for its achievements, urging them to continue to bring back those who left the party and new members to work together to win the 2023 general elections.

Falae decried the rate at which many young men and professionals including doctors were leaving Nigeria to seek greener pastures.

“If we do not restructure and revive Nigeria, more and more young people will desert the country,” Falae said.

He said that with Adebayo as SDP presidential candidate, Nigerians have the chance to elect a president that would restructure and chart a new course for the country.

Olu Falae rubbishes Bisi Akande’s autobiography

An elder statesman and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Chief Olu Falae has taken a swipe at the former Governor of Osun State, Chief Bisi Akande over the latter’s position in his autobiography ‘My Participation’ on the 2014 CONFAB attended by some Yoruba elders.

According to Falae, who was one of the delegates to the CONFAB, Akande misrepresented facts in the book which was launched in December 2021.

Akande had, in the autobiography launched in Lagos, questioned some Yoruba leaders including Falae for attending the CONFAB.

While describing Akande as a reckless individual who wrote “nonsense”, Falae who was also a former Minister of Finance said that delegates who attended the CONFAB were of different age grades including youths.

Falae, who spoke in an interview at his country home in Ondo State on Friday, added that his passion for a new and better Nigeria was the basis why he attended the national conference as against the insinuation by Akande that he and others attended the CONFAB due to mouth-watering allowances doled out by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“I have decided not to say a word about the nonsense which Akande wrote. But I just know Akande is a very reckless person,” he said.

“He’ll just say anything without thought, without thinking about the consequences, he will just say it like an irresponsible person. That is how he speaks.”

Alao-Akala recently defected to the All Progressives Congress after failing to win the state’s governorship election in 2015 on the platform of the Labour Party.

The former governor had earlier dumped the Peoples Democratic Party after a disagreement with the national leaders over the conduct of the state primaries and what he described as imposition of candidate.

Falae was accompanied to Alao-Akala’s house by other SDP leaders including a former Minister for Education, Prof. Tunde Adeniran; Ambassador Yemi Farounbi, Dr. Olu Agunloye, Taiwo Akeju, Chief Kola Balogun and Princess Oyeronke Akinlolu.

In his address, Falae said Nigerians who believe in national unity, justice, equity and progress must come together and rescue the nation from its present position.

He said, “There is a need for us to be together to save Nigeria and restore democracy, by bringing about a new hope for fulfillment. We are optimistic that every Nigerian that wants the nation to be saved will join hands with us in this effort.”

Alao-Akala said he was flattered by the visit of Falae and other SDP leaders, describing the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation as respected statesman.

He said he would get back to the party after consulting with his loyalists on the issue.

  • We are yet to arrest herdsmen who razed Falae’s farm – Police

We are yet to arrest herdsmen who razed Falae’s farm – Police

The Ondo State Police Command on Monday said it was yet to arrest any suspect with links to the burnt farm of a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae, at Ilado Village in Akure North Local Government Area of the state last Sunday.

Some people suspected to be Fulani herdsmen on Sunday allegedly set fire on about five hectares of the farm where oil palm trees and some other cash crops were planted.

Giving updates on the matter, Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr. Femi Joseph, said it could not be ascertained that the dastardly act was carried out by herdsmen because there was no arrest yet. He, however, explained that the command had begun investigation on the incident.

He noted that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gbenga Adeyanju and the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Gboyega Adefarati and other top government functionaries had visited the farm to assess the extent of damage.

Joseph said, “We were on the farm today (yesterday) and I want to tell you that the affected area on the farm did not have much crops. Although that is not to say anybody has the right to burn another person’s farm.

“We are still investigating, we don’t know those who did the act, so we can’t say specifically whether it was a particular person or not because we have not arrested anybody yet and we didn’t meet anybody there when we got there today (yesterday).

Also reacting to the development, the pan-Yoruba socio-political association, Afenifere, described the attack on Falae as an attack on the entire Yorubaland.

The Secretary-General of the association, Chief Sehinde Arogbofa, blamed President Muhammadu Buhari for being silent on the issue of herdsmen attack across the country. He alleged that the silence of the President meant that the latter was delighted about the herdsmen’s activities against other citizens of the country.

He said, “The silence of the Head of State on these issues is very ominous and it doesn’t augur well for the oneness of this country because if somebody of the status of Chief Falae is undergoing this type of trauma and the President doesn’t say anything and they say silence means consent.

“It is so unfortunate and unfair, if this type of thing is happening and the President is looking the other way, it is not good. This is an attack on the people of Yorubaland. Chief Falae is a national figure and if he is being treated like this, it means the government doesn’t have any regard for us in Yorubaland.”

“Baba Falae is one of the most respected and reverred leaders of Afenifere and the Yoruba nation. Only two years ago the same Fulani terrorists kidnapped him and almost killed him.

“I ask Buhari and Miyetti Allah, does he deserve this? Is this fair? How many more people have to die and how many more farms have to be destroyed before you will call these barbarians to order and bring them to book?”
