The next person to ascend the throne of Olubadan, based on information provided, in line with Ibadan tradition is the former Oyo state senator, Mashood Olalekan Balogun.

According to reports, the ascension to the Olubadan stool starts from installation from Mogaji before promotion to either Ajia Balogun of Ibadan land or Ajia Olubadan of Ibadan land.

Lekan Balogun, as fondly called, represented Oyo Central senatorial district between 1999 and 2003.

Balogun, who was promoted from Mogaji to Ajia Olubadan few decades ago, had earlier worked as a lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State.

Balogun’s younger brother, Dr. Muhammed Kola Balogun, is currently representing Oyo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

Balogun, a doctor of philosophy holder, is a native of Ali-Iwo compound in Ibadan North East Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Balogun is currently the Otun Olubadan of Ibadan land and is currently the most senior chief in Ibadan land.

He is to succeed the monarch in line with Ibadan tradition.

It was gathered that there are about 34 steps to climb to get into the Olubadan In Council.

All the members of the council are potential future Olubadans with the exception of Iyalode.

Olubadan laments deaths of Ibadan elders

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has expressed worry over persistent cases of deaths of Ibadan elders in recent times.

Adetunji expressed his worry in a statement issued in Ibadan by his spokesperson, Mr Adeola Oloko, while reacting to the death of the Parakoyi of Ibadanland, Chief Bode Akindele,

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Akindele, a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist, died on Monday in Lagos at the age of 87.

The monarch expressed shock and disbelief over Akindele’s passage barely four days after the death of Oyo State immediate past govermor, Abiola Ajimobi.

He lamented the passing in recent times of high profile Ibadan indigenes such as the legal luminary, Chief Richard Akinjide.

Others, he said, were veteran journalist, Chief Areoye Oyebola, business mogul, Chief Muritala Adetunji; renowned educationist, Chief Emiola Adesina as well as renowned agronomist, Dr Lalekan Are.

Adetunji called on clerics and spiritual leaders, irrespective of affiliation, to intercede for the well-being of all citizens, particularly in Ibadanland where people had been dying slowly but steadily in recent times.

The Olubadan described Akindele as an astute businessman, entrepreneur of note and one whose life benefited many.

He recalled how the late Parakoyi of Ibadanland set up business outfits, employed hundreds of people and fixed destinies of otherwise hapless citizens.

” Even though a man who lives up to 82 can be said to be advanced in age, when people mourn their loses it is because the vacuum left behind is always difficult if not impossible to fill,” he said.

He said that Akindele bestrode the business world like a colossus for over 50 years, culminating in the establishment of Madandola Group of Companies with investment in shipping, fisheries, real estate and telecommunications among others.

The monarch prayed for the repose of the departed souls and called on men and women of God to stand in the gap for the protection and preservation of Ibadan people at home and in the Diaspora.

He also prayed God to give Akindele’s family, particularly his wives and children, the fortitude to bear the loss.

EFCC arrests three suspects for duping Olubadan’s deputy

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office, has arrested three persons including Babatunde Ologunja, Olusola Olaoye Babatunde and Olufemi Lawal for allegedly duping the Otun-Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun.

The suspects and others still at large were accused of conspiring to dispossess the revered Ibadan High Chief of sums running to about N300m (Three Hundred Million Naira).

Balogun, who is next to the Olubadan in the Olubadan-In-Council hierarchy, was a Senator representing the Oyo South Senatorial District under the platform of the Alliance for Democracy in National Assembly between 1999 and 2003.

His younger brother, Dr. Kola Balogun, who currently sits in his former position in Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber, had written an emotional petition to the EFCC as ‘a ‘concerned member of the Aliwo family’, seeking the Commission’s intervention in smashing the syndicate and ensuring that members are made to pay for their alleged crime.

The younger Balogun feared that the High Chief may have been charmed by the suspected fraudsters as he was still unable to come to terms with the reality of his situation.

“This request became necessary because we believe strongly that the victim has been hypnotized, he is not in a position to admit it and his health condition is deteriorating,” the Senator stated in the petition.

Preliminary investigations into the allegations revealed that for the past four years, the suspects have consistently collected various sums of money from the High Chief.

The sums, according to findings, were not attached to any particular projects and no receipts were issued to indicate the existence of any genuine transactions between the parties.

As the time of their arrest, the syndicate had received about N300 million through bank transfers from the Ibadan High High Chief.

The Commission has designated for possible forfeiture four vehicles and six landed properties traced to their alleged fraudulent activities.

The EFCC is still on the trail of their fugitive partners, as further investigations are underway.

  • Olubadan elevates Adegoke, Ajimobi, 12 other chiefs

Chief Adegboyega Adegoke, the Chief Financial Officer of OES Energy Services and Chief Wasiu Ajimobi, brother of former Gov. Abiola Ajimobi, were among the 14 newly promoted chiefs by the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that they were promoted on Friday at an installation ceremony held at the Popoyemoja palace of the monarch in Ibadan.

NAN reports that Adegoke, formerly the Mogaji of Abose family is now Ajia Balogun of Ibadanland, while Ajimobi, formerly Aare Onibon Balogun, is now Lagunna Balogun of Ibadanland.

Also among those elevated were Chief Gboyega Orogunmodi from Bada Balogun to Oota Balogun of Ibadanland and Chief Adetunji Lanihun from Gbonka Olubadan to Aregbe-Omo Olubadan.

Chief Babajide Ayoade from Ajia Balogun to Aregbe-Omo Balogun, Chief Dauda Gbadamosi from Are Onibon Olubadan to Gbonka Olubadan and Chief Adetokunbo Akintola from Jagun Balogun to Gbonka Balogun Ibadanland.

On the list also were Chief Oyeleke Oyekola from Bada Olubadan to Are Onibon Olubadan, Chief Oluyinka Akande from Ajia Olubadan to Bada Olubadan and Chief Olukorede Olubota from Jagun Olubadan to Ajia Olubadan.

Also elevated were Mogaji Nureni Akanbi of Iba Oluyole family to Aare Onibon Balogun Ibadanland and Mogaji Kayode Kadelu of Kadelu family who is now Bada Balogun Ibadanland.

Others were Mogaji Aderoju Olasunkanmi of Aladorin family to Jagun Olubadan Ibadanland and Mogaji Olatunji Arulogun of Enimowu Arulogun family now Jagun Balogun Ibadanland.

The Olubadan commended the newly elevated chiefs for their contributions to Ibadanland, urging them not to relent in supporting developmental projects in Ibadan.

In his remarks, Adegoke said there was need for government to involve traditional rulers in governance, saying they were closer to the people.

He called for constitutional amendment by the National Assembly to accommodate roles for traditional rulers in governance.

“Traditional rulers are closer to the people than local government chairmen. It is very hard to see anyone who will not recognise his monarch but they may not even recognise their chairman.

“So, for democracy to thrive, there is need for involvement of traditional rulers in governance,” he said.(NAN)

  • Olubadan, high chiefs reconcile after 26 months’ rift

Olubadan of Ibadanland Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji has, after 26 months, welcomed his estranged high chiefs and members of the Olubadan-in-Council back into his palace following a reconciliation move to end their rift.

The traditional ruler’s condition that if the high chiefs would return to the palace, they must not come with their crowns, was obeyed.
In a statement issued and signed by the Olubadan Personal Assistant/Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Adeola Oloko, Oba Adetunji said there was abundant evidence that the returning high chiefs were being trapped from where they went.
The last time the Olubadan-in-Council meeting was held was in May 2017.
Members of the reconciliation team – Otun Olubadan Lekan Balogun, Osi Olubadan Rasidi Ladoja and Ekarun Olubadan Amidu Ajibade – arrived at the palace at about 12.15p.m. in separate vehicles.
About 20 minutes later, the Olubadan, who was dressed in blue ofi and white crown and half shoe to match, received them with open arms amid songs, drum beat and trumpet sound. He danced and sat on the throne and the high chiefs paid homage.
They later went into a closed door meeting, which lasted for about 40 minutes after which reporters and camera men were called in.
It was believed that a plea for another all-inclusive meeting involving other chiefs, who were absent was made before the royal father.
Olubadan was said to have agreed to convene the meeting on Monday, August 19, 2019, after the Eid-el-Kabir festival.
Although, the details of the meeting remained sketchy, the Otun Olubadan, who allegedly spoke at the meeting, called on the paramount ruler to summon the meeting of Olubadan-in-Council to resolve the crisis within.
The first class monarch, who thanked the returning high chiefs for coming, noted that his support for reconciliation was premised on the need for unity, progress and solidarity in Ibadan.
He told the returning high chiefs that he was all out to protect their interest all along, adding there was abundant evidence that they were being trapped where they went. He, however, added that time would tell.
Trouble started between the Olubadan and his high chiefs when the state government under Governor Abiola Ajimobi upgraded and approved the high chiefs as beaded crowns and coronets wearing obas alongside 38 others across the state.
It followed government’s review of the 1957 state chieftaincy laws.
The government said the approval was in line with the exercise of powers conferred on the governor by Section 28(1) of the Chiefs Law Cap 28, Vol. 1 Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria.
According to the government, 26 Obas would wear beaded crowns based on the approval and the remaining 22 would wear coronets.
Though , the government claimed its decision was taken after due consultation with members of the state’s Council of Obas and Chiefs, both the Olubadan and High Chief Ladoja distanced themselves from the decision.
They described it as illegal and unlawful and challenged the action in the court.

  • Face-off between Olubadan, chiefs deepens

The face-off between the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, and his high chiefs deepened on Tuesday with the first class monarch ordering them to remove their “ illegal crowns.’’

The Olubadan said that he had no objection to the return of his high chiefs to the palace “ once they remove their illegal crowns.’’

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the high chiefs had on Monday accused the Olubadan of running a “ one-man-show’’ and disregarding the Olubadan-in-Council.

The chiefs also accused the monarch of appointing Mogajis (family heads) and Baales (village heads) without consulting the council.

One of the members of the Olubadan-in-Council and Otun Olubadan, Lekan Balogun, while speaking at a meeting of the council at Mapo Hall in Ibadan said the actions of the Olubadan called for urgent attention to forestall crisis.

But Adetunji said in a statement issued on Tuesday in Ibadan by his media aide, Adeola Oloko, that he was not responsible in the first instance for the desertion of the palace by the high chiefs.

The Olubadan urged the high chiefs to apologise to the people of Ibadanland in particular and the Yoruba people in general for “ undermining our custom and tradition.’’

According to him, there is nowhere in Yorubaland where two kings sit inside a palace.

“Apart from violating our customs and tradition, there is no law that backs the wearing of illegal crowns in Ibadanland,’’ Adetunji said.

He recalled that he had expected the high chiefs to comply with the Oyo State High Court judgment which declared the state government reform that produced the crowned chiefs as illegal, null, void and of no effect.

Adetunji stated that contrary to the allegation of the high chiefs, he had done no wrong nor acted illegally at any time.

According to him, Section 22 (2) of the Chiefs Law, Cap 28 Law of Oyo State 2000 makes the Olubadan the prescribed and consenting authority on all chieftaincy matters in Ibadanland.

The monarch argued that the Olubadan-in-Council was merely an advisory body without any power.

  • President Buhari felicitates Olubadan at 90

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday felicitated the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, on his 90th birthday holding on Sunday.

Buhari extended warm greetings to the monarch’s family, friends and entire domain who continue to enjoy the grace and wisdom of fatherhood and exceptional leadership.

The statement read, “The President affirms that Olubadan brought a rich background of business acumen to the throne of his fathers, and has successfully translated the wisdom of investments into leadership by encouraging both the young and old to start and own businesses.

“President Buhari extols Olubadan’s sense of patriotism and loyalty to the country, and his regular mobilisation of members of his community for civic duties, especially on issues that directly impact on good governance and the development of Nigeria.

“The President prays that the almighty God will grant the royal father longer life, and good health to reign on the throne of his fathers.”
