Why we lost Edo governorship election – Labour Party

Chairman of Labour Party (LP) in Edo State, Mr Kelly Ogbalo has alleged that the party would have won the state governorship election if it was conducted in a free and fair manner. He disclosed this in an interview in Benin on Monday.

Mr Olumide Akpata who was the governorship candidate for the Labour Party came third in the outcome of the election. Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Monday Okpebholo won the election with candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Asue Ighodalo emerging second.

Ogbalo claimed that the election was marred by serious irregularities, including open vote-buying that the security agencies failed to check.

“Labour Party won the election but was not allowed to take possession. What I mean by that is that the election was marred with serious irregularities; there was open vote buying. The security agencies failed to check this anomaly.

“So in such a way where votes were bought and with manipulation of results here and there. What do you expect?,” he said.

When asked if LP would challenge the result in court, Ogbalo said the party was yet to call a state council meeting to take a position on the matter.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had on Sept. 22 declared Sen. Monday Okpebholo of the APC winner of the election.

Okpebholo polled 291,667 votes to defeat Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 247,274 votes while LP’s candidate, Mr Olumide Akpata, came third with 22,763 votes.

BREAKING: Olumide Akpata defeated in his polling unit

Olumide Akpata, Labour Party (LP) candidate in the ongoing Edo State Governorship Election has been defeated in his polling unit (PU).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Akpata voted at Ward 6, PU 11 in Oredo local government area of the State.

Akpata’s polling unit was won by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with 41 votes. The Labour Party candidate polled 32 votes while the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 19 votes at the PU.

Akpata after casting his vote had adjudged the process at the polling unit as credible. Speaking with journalists after voting at about 10:30 am, Olumide said “I voted according to the voting process and everything went well.

“I want to hope that this is the experience of every Edo voter. I cannot make assumptions standing here. I am going to wait for feedback from around the different units and 192 wards in the state. We are hopeful that this will be the experience of every Edo voter.

“I am calling on INEC that the playing field should remain level. Nobody should be given any undue advantage. All party agents should be allowed into the collation centres, so that we can all witness the process.

“Edo election is an off cycle election so INEC should have the luxury of deploying it’s resources to show the world that they can do it well. The playing field should be totally  levelled to allow the best man or women to win.

“I am hearing some concerning feedback from around the state but I cannot make any statement until I verify the source of my information. We have crossed one hurdle, I have voted and my supporters should be allowed to vote, he said”.

He added that the deployment of tight security personnel was good, but he however expressed concerns if the security were for the voters or certain individuals.

‘I’m still in this race’ – LP candidate denies stepping down from Edo guber poll

Labour Party candidate, Olumide Akpata has said he is still in the race ahead of the Sept. 21 Edo Governorship Election.

Akpata stated this in Benin on Friday, while debunking a publication that he had stepped down from the governorship race.

He said the publication was the handiwork of fraudulent politicians.

He urged Edo people to disregard the publication, noting that: I AM STILL IN THIS RACE.

”I have been inundated with a flood of calls and messages from friends and supporters, which constrains me to release this statement to dispel the wicked rumour circulating that I have decided to step down and support the PDP candidate in tomorrow’s governorship election.

“The notion that I would step down on the eve of the election, after the overwhelming support received from the good people of our state, borders on delusion.

“This pathetic attempt at deception is so amateurish that the “Oluwole” forgers could not even get the date right, leaving “July 29, 2024″ on their fraudulent document.

He urged journalists to report the facts accurately and diligently verity information before publication.

He also vowed to fish out the architects of the forgery, “I will not rest until I uncover every individual involved in this criminal act.”

Obaseki who spoke in an interview late on Thursday said that the Edo people will push through their choice of Dr Asue Ighodalo despite the armoured tanks being used to intimidate them by a former governor of the state campaigning for the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Dr Obaseki who spoke in an interview with a national TV station said:

“When you push us to the wall we will come out fighting like a bull. A people who for centuries were not trampled upon by any black nation we will come out to express ourselves.

“I am giving it to you that as at 7.30 p.m. as we speak that at his place (former governor of Edo State) that there are two armoured tanks, one on this side one on the other side and about 30 police vehicles then all the thugs are there.

“There is no thoroughfare there right now but that will not work. The Edo people we no de fear. On a normal level we know how to face these people. So, on the day of the poll we will all move to the polls and all express ourselves not because of but inspite of all these people that want to mangle us

“When Edo people, a set of people who for centuries no tribe of black extraction ever conquered, when we are confronted with things that want to pull at our strength, we rise up and we fight back.

“With our PVCs we will trample these people who are bent on changing the will of our people. This can happen any where else, but this is Edo, a race that have the conqueror DNA and any other person whosoever wants to, we will sweep them away with their brooms.

“The Edo people know that Asue Ighodalo is our umbrella into our future,” he said.

Edo guber election: Obi charges Benin for Akpata, gives reason to vote LP

Supporters of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, and the its governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata on Tuesday held a rally in Benin ahead of the September 21 gubernatorial election.

In Benin, Akpata’s supporters trooped out in their thousands, assembling at the state secretariat of the party along Sokponba Road in support of their  candidate.

The market women, and other members of the Labour party defied the heavy downpour, as they stood while former Anambra governor addressed the crowd, suspending vehicular traffic in the process.

The event marked the final round-up of campaigns, as the deadline for campaign activities is set for September 19th, just days before the election.

Speaking to the people in Oba Market, Obi said, “You know things have become very bad under this government, there is no light, no water, no security, no fuel. Everything in this country is scattered. What we want in Nigeria is change. We want to put food on our table, we want the government to tell us what they are using the money from fuel subsidies for, and we want a better Edo.

“On the 21st, you know what you will do, ensure you vote for Mama, papa, pikin so that we can start to repair Nigeria from Edo State. We need to change the people that say they are bringing change. You must vote for Olimide Apkata who is your guy.”

On his part, the candidate of the party, Olumide Akpata said, “This is the time for the election, our father is here, we need to let them know that we have a father who is Peter Obi, he asked me if you people will vote and I said we are one of the best voters in this country, who is your guy, I am your guy and Edo will be okay, on the 21st of September, we will sack those occupying on government house now that have misused our resources.”

Your administration had brought untold hardship to Edo people – Akpata blasts Obaseki

The governorship candidate of Labour Party in the Edo state upcoming election, Olumide Akpata, has criticised the outgoing governor of the Godwin Obaseki, saying his administration had brought untold hardship to the people.

In a statement on Sunday, Akpata the suffering of the Edo people had reached unprecedented levels under the Obaseki government, which began its tenure under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and concludes under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“The current administration celebrates our 33rd anniversary with pomp and pageantry, brandishing statistics of its supposed achievements. Yet, as I have traversed the length and breadth of our state—from Benin City to Auchi to Uromi—I have witnessed a stark disconnect between these lofty claims and the harsh realities on the ground.

“This political somersault has brought no relief to the common man. Instead, it has only deepened the wounds of misgovernance and unfulfilled promises. The past eight years have been a masterclass in the politics of deception—a government that changed parties but maintained the same disregard for the welfare of its citizens.

“Our youths, once brimming with hope and vigour, now find themselves trapped in a cycle of unemployment and despair. Our elderly, who should be enjoying the fruits of their labour, are struggling. Our farmers, the backbone of our economy, grapple with inadequate support and crumbling infrastructure.’

According to Akpata, the dreams of a prosperous Edo State, which burned bright 33 years ago, now flicker precariously in the winds of neglect and mismanagement.

“But even in these challenging times, I see reason for hope. In my journeys across the state, I have been inspired by the resilience of our people. I have met young people who, despite all odds, are creating innovative solutions to local problems. The stories of everyday courage and perseverance remind us of the true spirit of Edo State—a spirit that no amount of misgovernance can extinguish.

“It is this indomitable spirit that we must now channel into charting a new course for our state. In just 23 days, on September 21, 2024, we stand at a critical crossroads. In 23 days, we have the power to rewrite the story of our state to cast aside the failures of the past and vote for a future that truly reflects the greatness of our people. This election is more than a political contest; it is a battle for the soul of Edo State. It is a choice between continuing down the path of unfulfilled promises and embarking on a journey of genuine transformation.”

He said although the journey ahead will be challenging, the rewards are immeasurable.

“Together, we can transform Edo State into a land of opportunity, where every citizen has the chance to reach their full potential. We can create a state where our children no longer dream of escaping abroad but aspire to build their futures right here at home. A state where innovation thrives, where small businesses flourish, and where our natural and human resources are leveraged to create sustainable wealth for all.

“Together, we can build an Edo State that will give us genuine reasons to celebrate in the years to come. A state where progress is not measured by the wealth of a few but by the well-being of all. The task ahead is enormous, but so is our capacity to meet it. The history of Edo State is replete with stories of triumph over adversity, and I have no doubt that we will rise to this occasion once again.”

His outburst comes as the Edo state governorship fast approaches.

Akpata, had recently accused supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of destroying his campaign billboards.

This is as the Edo election is scheduled to be held on September 21, 2024.

“We acknowledge the concerns raised by Mr Olumide Akpata regarding the removal of his campaign billboards.

“The Edo State Government condemns any form of vandalism and urges all parties involved to address such issues through proper channels.

The letter reads: “After due consideration of the report by the Management, the Vice Chancellor has approved the suspension of the University’s Students Union.

” The suspension which is indefinite, takes immediate effect, that is, from Monday 29th April, 2024.

“Accordingly, all officers of the Students’ Union are to hand over all property of the union in their possession to the Dean, Students’ Affairs, not later 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday

“In the interim, a caretaker committee composed of representatives of faculties, schools and institutes has been approved to coordinate students’ activities during the period of suspension.

“The directive of the Vice Chancellor is hereby communicated for the attention of the university community and compliance of the erstwhile union officers as appropriate, ” Bobola said.

Recall that the suspension was in connection with the incident at the university’s Senior Staff Club on April 12.

In the incident, the students’ union was said to have disrupted an interactive session by staff of the university with the Edo State governorship candidate of Labour Party, Olumide Akpata.

The students were said to have behaved unruly at the event and in the process, rough-handled many of the staff, including a member of the Academic Staff of the Universities (ASUU), who was reportedly beaten to a pulp.

Following the incident, the management of the university set up a panel of enquiry to investigate the incident with a view to unraveling the crux of the issue.

  • Edo Guber: Court told to disqualify LP candidate, Olumide Akpata

Edo Guber: Court told to disqualify LP candidate, Olumide Akpata

One of the Labour party aspirants in Edo state, Kenneth Imasuangbon has dragged the Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata to court asking for his disqualification from the September 21 election.

Akpata who’s the former NBA president has been cleared by the Labour Party to be the party’s flag bearer for the September guber elections.

In lawsuit No. FHC B/CS/26/2024, filed at the Benin division of the Federal High Court by his counsel A.A. Malik & Co, Imasuangbon said the LP which is the second defendant in the suit erred by declaring Olumide Akpata the winner of the party’s primary election conducted on February 23, 2024.

Similarly, Imansuangbon also filed another suit in the Abuja division of the Federal High Court, accusing Akpata of lying under oath, claiming that he supplied false information to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Moreso, In the Abuja suit filed on April 12, 2024, Akpata who is the first defendant, was joined in the suit by his running mate, Alufohai Faith, LP, and INEC as the second, third, and fourth defendants respectively.

Like in the suit filed in Benin, Akpata was only joined by LP and INEC as the first, second, and third defendants.

In the Benin suit, Imasuangbon said Akpata was not qualified to contest the primary having violated the provisions of section 222(c) of the Nigeria constitution as well as Article 28 of the party’s guidelines for the conduct of the primary.

Imasuangbon added that votes garnered by the first defendant in the primary be declared invalid.

The plaintiff, who listed nine issues for determination and 18 others for declaration by the court, asked the court to set aside the LP February 23 governorship primary in the Edo state.

He further asked the court, “to determine if Akpata is qualified to have contested the primary having failed to sign or endorse the indemnity form issued to him by the second defendant.

“To determine if the votes garnered in the purported primary should not be voided and wasted in the face of outright disregard to the constitutional provisions of the country and that of the party.

In his declaration, the plaintiff told the court to bar the INEC or any other agent from recognizing Akpata as the governorship candidate of the LP for the September 21 Edo governorship poll.

He also called for the withdrawal of the certificate of return issued by the second defendant to the first defendant as the purported winner of the said primary.

While asking for the sum of N20 million as the cost of the suit, Imasuangbon asked that a fresh primary be conducted not later than 30 days after the judgement of the court.

However, for the Abuja division of the suit, Imasuangbon alleged that Akpata supplied false information to the INEC according to information provided in their form EC9.

He said that Akpata claimed to have been Akpata Olumide Anthony, but filled in his name to be Akpata Olumide Osaigbovo.

According to Imasuangbon, the actions contravene the provisions of section 29(5) of the 2022 electoral Act and also section 182(i), (a), and (j) of the 1999 constitution of the federal government of Nigeria as amended.

He thus sought his disqualification and for Akpata to be restrained from participating in the September 21 governorship election in Edo State.

INEC has scheduled the governorship election in Edo state for the 21st of September, 2024.
