Edo 2024: Ex-NBA president, Olumide Akpata emerges LP candidate

Former Nigeria Bar Association president, Olumide Akpata has won the Labour Party primary election in Edo State.

Akpata scored a total votes of 316  to win the exercise held in Benin City, the Edo State capital, on Friday.

The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ikechukwu Emeta declared Akpata as the winner of the election.

“I hereby declare as follows: Mr Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata, having scored the highest number of votes and certified the provisions of the constitution of the party, is hereby declared the winner and the gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party for the Edo State governorship election 2024,” Emeta who is also the chief returning officer for the election said.

Shortly after his emergence, Akpata paid tribute to a former governor of Ondo State and NBA president Rotimi Akeredolu who was buried on the same day.

The legal practitioner also thanked his supporters and members of the party for their backing, promising to work for the good of the state if he wins the governorship election.

His victory comes months after he declared interest in the Edo State governorship race under the Labour Party.

In October,  he had visited the Edo LP secretariat in Benin City to formally declare his interest in the race, pinning the decision on his love for the people.

“My interest is for the people of Edo State. And what I find out about politics and governance in Nigeria today is that the people have been taken out of the equation. Nobody cares about the people,” Akpata told the mammoth crowd that welcomed him.

“The Partners and management of TEMPLARS wish to announce that a Senior Partner at the Firm and the immediate past President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Olumide Akpata, has formally informed the Firm of his decision to participate in active politics,” the firm said in a statement.

“On account of this, and in line with the Firm’s governance protocols, Olumide Akpata and the Partners of the Firm have agreed that he disengages from the Firm with effect from 31st August 2023. This will enable him to fully focus on his project of contributing towards nation building.”

That same month, Akpata joined the LP, saying he wanted to play a more active part in the country’s political process.

“This was a major step for me and not one that I took lightly…but I simply got tired of complaining about Nigeria every day and bemoaning her fate and I decided to take the plunge and try to be part of the solution rather than agonising continually over the problem,” he said.

“This, for me, is the start of a very important journey and it is my prayer that I arrive safely at my destination.”

Why I joined Labour Party – Akpata

Mr Olumide Akpata, a Labour Party governorship aspirant in the upcoming Edo governorship election, on Tuesday said he joined the party to build it and not to destroy it.

Akpata made this known in Benin while debunking allegations that he sponsored a protest at the Labour party secretariat in Benin on Sunday, Feb. 4.

Akpata, also a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), noted that he had invested time and resources in building the party across Edo since he joined and would not want it destroyed by anyone or group of people.

He noted that he had no knowledge of the protest and did not sanction it in any way.

According to him, the baseless rumours and insinuations mischievously circulated are totally false.

“It has come to my attention that there was a protest on Sunday, Feb. 4, at the Labour Party State Secretariat in Benin, which allegedly turned violent.

“The baseless rumours and insinuations that have been mischievously circulated that the protesters were carrying out my bidding are totally false, unfounded and quite frankly ridiculous.

“I am a loyal and dedicated member of the labour party, who has invested significant time, energy, and resources towards building and strengthening the party across the state since I joined.

“It is, therefore, both laughable and utterly despicable that I would be linked to any kind of violent protest at the party secretariat,” Akpata said.

He said that the allegations and rumours emanated from certain quarters within the party that were opposed to his emergeance as the Labour Party gubernatorial flag bearer.

“In their desperation, they have resorted to underhanded tactics and smear campaigns to undermine my widespread credibility, acceptability, and support base within and outside the party.

“Amusingly, this is quite similar to an earlier campaign of calumny that sought to link me to acts of violence meted out against a former National Youth Leader of the party in Benin.

“This is yet another ludicrous attempt to unjustly give a dog a bad name in order to hang it.

“These puerile allegations are the products of malicious minds that are aimed at tarnishing my hard-earned reputation and image.

“I once again reject all insinuations and rumours linking me or my supporters to this purported protest,” he said.

Akpata added that his campaign organisation, supporters and well-wishers did not also engage in, encourage, or sanction any kind of violence or unwholesome conduct.

“I remain focused and steadfast in pursuit of my gubernatorial aspirations in a lawful and peaceful manner, upholding the principles of tolerance and justice.” he said

He explained that his mother died before the age of 49, noting that if not God’s blessings and mercies upon his life, his stories would have been different.

“The loss of a mother at that critical stage in one’s life can just turn things around but God was there and He has been there in all these 31 years till date.

“I become a lawyer, I started my legal career, I set up a law firm in conjunction with my elder brother and ultimately I became the President of the NBA.

“So you understand why I am excited, why I am happy, why I am grateful to God and that is why I have gathered friends and family members here to celebrate with me,” he added.

Peter Obi, ex-NBA President, others ask youths to revive spirit of production, self rebirth

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the February 25th, 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi; the immediate past President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Olumide Akpata, Social Critic, Mr Dele Farotimi, have counseled Edo State youths on the need to imbibe the culture of self reliance, remain steadfast on ethical standards and also cultivate the spirit of production, as a means to better society.

The trio and others who spoke, including the former Edo State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Anselm Ojezua and the Vice Chancellor, University of Benin, Prof. Lilian Salami; also harped on citizens rights and obligations, and the need to always hold government accountable by seeking justice where necessary.

They all spoke during the symposium and launch of three hand books: “Citizens Rights and Obligations,” “Ethics, Values and Youth Re-orientation, and “Cottage Industry for Agro and Mineral Raw Materials Processing in Edo State,” organised by Unuedo Renaissance in Benin City, capital of Edo State at the weekend.

While Obi, Akpata, Farotimi and Ojezua spoke as guest speakers, Prof. Salami who served as chairperson of the event also gave the Keynote Address.

Addressing participants who were majorly youths drawn from secondary and tertiary institutions in Edo, Obi, a former Anambra State Governor who spoke virtually, asked them to imbibe the spirit of production as a means to progress like other countries of the western world.

Obi said because he understood the importance of production, he had to ensure it becomes one of his mantras during the presidential campaign to emphasise that he would make the country shift away from consumption to production.

He also noted that the country attained its present state because of scarcity of role models including political leadership to drive the necessary change.

Obi who commended organisers of the event, Unuedo Renaissance, enjoined all and sundry to be steadfast on ethical standards to immediate community and state, pursue and seek justice when necessary, noting that these are some of the vital issues that will ensure brighter future for the youth in  Edo State.

On his part, Akpata, the former NBA president, enjoined the youths to always strive to enthrone good leadership which is deficient in Nigeria.

He said “because we are poor in leadership and management, Nigeria as a country has remained the way it is.”

According to him, “In Nigeria democracy, citizens don’t matter and out of the equation”, adding however, that if the people know the enormous power they have and utilise it, there is no way the country will not enthrone the right leadership that will drive the country to prosperity.”

Speaking also on one of the thematic areas, ‘Cottage Industries for Agro and Mineral Raw Materials Processing in Edo’, Akpata quipped: “Industries cannot work without ethics and values because  you cannot place something on nothing.”

He said the best way to move forward is by making ethics, values an essential ingredients in whatever we do either at home, in school, church and workplace.

To Farotimi, how to get Nigeria working again based on the three thematic areas  can only be achieved through good governance, right ethics and values; where the rule of law works; that is where there is equal rights and justice; and citizens are allowed to determine how they are governed.

He said the central point of getting the cottage industries running is by fixing power generation in a more decentralised manner like off grid, renewable energy and tapping other sources of energy.

In his contribution, the former chairman of APC and now chieftain of the PDP in Edo’, Anselm Ojezua, lamented that while Nigeria as a country has so much, it has nothing paradoxically.

He said while it’s is on record that there is no state and even local government area in Nigeria among all the countries in the world that does not have one mineral deposit or the other, yet it cannot create jobs.

He said the failure to do so is because the country export the jobs it should have created along with the exported raw material sold at peanuts.

Ojezua while praising the organizers, said the time has come for government at all levels to stand tall and agree that rather than exporting raw materials, we should produce those raw materials to finished products which would in turn guarantee jobs for the employed youths and others in the society.

In her keynote Address, Prof Salami, chairman of the occasion and Vice Chancellor, University of Benin, thanked Unuedo Renaissance for organising such a symposium to equip the youths with the necessary tools as citizens.

She said while citizens have right to life, liberty, fair hearing, quality educate as enshrined in the constitution, they should also know they have certain obligations to the state in form of respect to constituted authority, payment of taxes and levies.

On ethics and values, the UNIBEN VC, noted the need to abide by prescribed moral standards, noting that the major inhibitors to all these are week family upbringing, deficient leadership and widespread impunity in public places, illegitimate resource accumulation, corruption of political and public office holders etc.

The vice chancellor who was represented by the deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Kate Ogbomwan, advised youths to shun corruption both in public and in private, engage in civic education, pursue ethical revolution, hold leaders accountable at all times and organise orientation programmes rather than being mere critics, as well as create unity to enhance the state natural base for the benefit of all.

Earlier, President of Unuedo Renaissance, Nuhu Yakubu in his welcome address, said the objectives behind the programme was to empower the youths by introducing three remarkable handbooks namely; “Citizens Rights and Obligations”, “Ethics, Values and Youth Re-orientation”, and “Cottage Industries for Agro and Raw Materials Processing in Edo”, adding that a combination of the books is the organisation’s collective efforts to empower the youths of Edo State.

According to Yakubu, “The unveiling of these handbooks is a combination of our collective efforts to empower our young ones, instill unwavering values, prepare them for encouraging role of self sufficiency within our state and by so doing Nigeria at large.”

He also pointed out that the gathering signified more than a book launch but an investment in the future of Edo State and nuturing of the potentials inherent in the youths who are the architects of tomorrow.

Yakubu further stated, “It is a manifesto to arming the youths with the tools and wisdom needed for the prosperous destination of of our dear state.”

High point of the ceremony was the unveiling of the handbooks, powered by Unuedo Renaissance, an association of professionals resident within and outside  Edo State in Nigeria and in the diaspora with the common objective to improve  the socio-economic well being of the Edo people and the state, and a mission to be a rallying platform for professionals of Edo extraction with diverse fields of endeavour, common objective regardless of tribe, ethnicity and religions background.

It also possess the vision to continue to play a key role of connecting generations of Edo indigenes and bringing good governance to the people of the state.

Ex-NBA President, Akpata reveals why the “judiciary is never well paid”

The immediate past President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Olumide Akpata, has blamed politicians for the corruption in the judiciary, revealing why the “judiciary is never well paid”.

Akpata, who spoke at a panel session at the ongoing International Bar Association (IBA) conference in the United States of America (USA), said they recognized the judiciary as their route to political power.

He said they consolidate their hold on the sector by hijacking judicial officers’ appointment process, paying judges poorly and generally starving the judiciary of funds.

So, because the politicians recognize that the way to political power now is the judiciary, what they do is they take charge of the appointment process

Akpata stated this in a video published by The Nigeria Lawyer.

Addressing a panel at the IBA session, he said: “Judiciary capture is no longer as brazen as it was before but it is insidious, and in my jurisdiction what happens is that from the point of view of appointment, the process is opaque, so people, who ought not to be on the Bench, get to the Bench.

“Thirdly, there is intimidation which includes raids on the homes of Judges by 11, 12 midnight.

“Lastly, there is the brazen corruption, where they just offer them bribes.

“Now, the whole point is this: in my jurisdiction and many parts of the continent, the Judiciary is seen as the way to political power, so you find out that the Supreme Court can decide that the guy who came third on the ballot is actually the governor of a state or he’s the president.

“So, because the politicians recognize that the way to political power now is the judiciary, what they do is they take charge of the appointment process, they make sure the judiciary is never well paid to make sure that the system does not work.”

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, for the third time in the last three months, recently warned politicians to refrain from interfering with the operations of the Judiciary.

“Let the politicians leave the Judiciary alone for us to function,” the CJN said on October 30 during a reception held in his honour by the Oyo State Government.”
