  • 2023: Step down now, Omo-Agege tells Atiku, Okowa

2023: Step down now, Omo-Agege tells Atiku, Okowa

As the Presidential campaigns officially kick off, the Deputy Senate President and Delta APC Gubernatorial Candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has called on the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, to step down.

Senator Omo-Agege hinged his call on the need for equity, instistng that by contesting the polls when a northerner is about completing his eight years in office, the PDP presidential candidate has shown that he lacks the locus to preach equity, fairness, justice and integrity.

Omo-Agege who is also the Delta State Coordinator, Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council argued that Governor Okowa has by his action of becoming a Vice Presidential Candidate of PDP, betrayed the trust reposed on him by his colleagues and the entire South.

“During the week, at the Second Reading and Debate on General Principles on a bill seeking to legalise power rotation across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, I had urged my colleagues in PDP to persuade their Presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to step down and rotate the presidential ticket to the South.

“The domino effect of that would also be the resignation of Atiku’s running mate and Governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and ceding the vice presidential ticket to the North.

“Like I pointed out on the floor of the Senate during my contribution, if PDP senators were serious, they would have first pleaded with their presidential candidate to step down from the race for power to return to Southern Nigeria. By May next year, the North would have ruled for eight years of two terms and it is only fair that power comes back to the South,” he said.

The Delta Central lawmaker noted that notable bodies like the Southern Governors Forum, their northern counterparts, social cultural organisations such as Afenifere; Middle Belt Forum, Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) and Ohaneze Ndigbo have all harped on the need for Southern Presidency.

He recalled his meeting with elder statesman and former Federal Commissioner for Information, Chief Edwin Clark in July this year, when the Niger Delta leader faulted the PDP for not zoning its presidential ticket to the South.

“Irrespective of political differences, 17 Governors in the South met in Asaba, the capital of Delta State on May 11, 2021, and took far-reaching decisions, including that, based on the principles of fairness, equity and justice, the Presidency should rotate to the South, at the end of the statutory eight years of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure.

“Governor Okowa was the host of that historic meeting. The Southern Governors later met in Lagos, on July 5, where they reaffirmed their decision, and again in Enugu, on September 16, to restate the call that the Presidency should rotate to the South in 2023.

“What Nigerians can deduce from PDP jettisoning zoning and giving its ticket to Atiku is that the campaign messages of the party should be taken with a pinch of salt. ‘Trust,’ they say, ‘is like an antique, once it’s broken, it can never be replaced’. The PDP Presidential candidate and his running mate have broken the trust of Nigerians. The honourable thing to do is for the duo to honourably resign and right the wrong.

“It, therefore, didn’t come to us as a surprise that five PDP governors boycotted the inauguration of PDP Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja to register their grieviances over the injustice meted to the Southern States of Nigeria,” Omo-Agege stated.

When you came in I saw light in you, Mosogar needs light and we believe that with you and Omo-Agege our 9 years of darkness will be a thing of the past.

“When you get to the Senate, I want you to follow the steps of your father, he made the Urhobo Nation very proud. Some senator has gone but they brought darkness to Mosogar.

2023: Omo-Agege appoints Orubebe APC guber campaign DG

The Deputy Senate President and Delta APC Governorship Candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has announced former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe, as Director-General of the Delta All Progressives Congress,APC, Gubernatorial Campaign Organisation.

In a statement, Omo-Agege said Orubebe is bringing on board a towering wealth of experience, and shall oversee all ramifications of the campaign for the mandate of Deltans in the 2023 governorship elections.

“Orubebe shall, side by side with me, lead critical engagements and drive consultations, and by his renowned robustness, up the ante for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Together with the rest of the team, we shall show PDP the way out of Government House come May 29, 2023,” he said.

The selection of the Ijaw-born politician, he noted, was very straightforward given his knowledge, capacity and pedigree. “Bringing him on board strengthens the campaign organisation straightaway, and builds a strategic redoubt of crucial stakeholders at the grassroots for the contest ahead. “

According to him, “when news of Elder Godsday Orubebe’s resignation from the PDP filtered in, June, our campaign organisation applauded him for toeing the path of progress and enjoined him to pitch tent with progressives in the APC, and help in the task of taking over Government House come 2023.

‘I am proud to announce that he heeded that call and joined our party, the APC, in his ward at Burutu Local Government Area”.

“He will be bringing to our campaign organisation his vast reach at the grassroots, as well as at the state and federal levels, having been a supervisory councillor and chairman of local government, a state party chairman, and a two time minister of the federal republic, ” Omo-Agege said.

Orubebe was born June 6th 1959 at Ogbobagbene in Burutu Local Government Area in Delta state. He attended the University of Lagos, where he earned a B.Sc. in Political Science in 1985. He later attended Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, where he obtained a master’s degree in International Relations.

Orubebe was supervisory councilor and later chairman of Burutu LGA. In July 2007, President Umaru Musa Yar’adua appointed him Minister of Special Duties. He was later to become Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs when the ministry was created in December 2008.

When he eventually became full fledged minister of that ministry, one of his key achievements was to drive the construction of the East/West Highway in a rapid fast track.
Under his watch, the ministry constructed 38 out of 42 bridges, and over 900 culverts of the 1000 designed for the road.

Orubebe was also at the forefront of negotiating peace with Niger Delta militant groups which had brought crude oil production in Nigeria down to less than 400,000 barrels a day from over 2.5 million barrels, in protest of perceived social, economic and environmental injustice in the region.

Working with then Vice President, and later President Goodluck Jonathan, he shares the credit of instituting the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme, which successfully won the hearts and minds of most Niger Deltans and brought peace to the region.

Orubebe resigned from office in February 2014 to contest for the governorship of Delta State in the build up to the 2015 general elections.

  • Shettima is a detribalised Nigerian, major boost to APC Presidential Ticket, says Omo-Agege

Shettima is a detribalised Nigerian, major boost to APC Presidential Ticket, says Omo-Agege

The Deputy Senate President and Delta APC Governorship candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has felicitated with Senator Kashim Shettima on his emergence as Vice Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 General Elections.

In a congratulatory message personally signed by him, Senator Omo-Agege described the APC Vice Presidential candidate as detribalized and visionary, and a major plus for the APC Presidential ticket.

He recalled how the former Borno State Governor and lawmaker representing Borno Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, played a key role in his own emergence as Deputy Senate President in 2019.

“He was and continues to be a major player, not only in the National Assembly but in our nation at large. He is a large hearted and forward looking leader, inclusive in perspective and shorn of all bigotry. Our presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, couldn’t have made a better choice.

It is no surprise, Omo-Agege added, “that the Borno State Chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has immediately risen to support Shettima’s selection as Tinubu’s running mate.”

He noted that the APC Vice Presidential candidate is hospitable to other faiths and ethnic groups, and that this was evident during his tenure as Governor of Borno State from 2011 to 2019.

“As governor of a dominantly Kanuri state, he had amongst his closest aides, an Ibo Christian from Anambra State, an Urhobo Christian from Delta Central Senatorial District, a Christian from Edo State, a Yoruba Christian from the Southwest, a Fulani man from Gombe and a Hausa man from Zamfara,” he said.

He said that the Vice Presidential candidate is a forthright, vocal and outspoken politician who speaks truth to power.

“Senator Shettima is a dogged professional, a rare breed banker, an agricultural economist and politician who is an inspiration to a new generation of leaders.

“His rich profile in Executive and Legislative business, public and corporate governance will always be useful in steering the ship of state. I call on Nigerians to rally round the Tinubu/Shettima ticket and vote massively for APC in all positions at the 2023 General Elections. “

  • Senate amends electoral acts to permit President, governors, lawmakers to vote at party primaries

Senate amends electoral acts to permit President, governors, lawmakers to vote at party primaries

The Nigerian Senate, has amended the Electoral Act 2022, to make way for few changes. TheNewsGuru.com can authoritatively confirm

The amended Electoral Act 2022 now allows ‘statutory delegates’, elected persons to participate and vote in the conventions, congresses or meetings of political parties in the country.

The bill scaled first, second and third readings, respectively, and was passed by the Red chamber after thorough consideration by the Committee of the Whole.

The President, Vice President, Members of the National Assembly, Governors and their deputies, Members of the State Houses of Assembly, Chairmen of Councils, Councillors, and National Working Committee of political parties, have all been identified as Statutory delegates.

The Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege (Delta Central) sponsored the bill to give room for the amendments

Omo-Agege, in his presentation, said the bill seeks to amend the provision of section 84(8) of the Electoral Act.

According to him, the provisions of the section “does not provide for the participation of what is generally known as ‘statutory delegates’ in the conventions, congresses or meetings of political parties.”

“The extant section only clearly provides for the participation of elected delegates in the conventions, congresses or meetings of political parties held to nominate candidates of political parties.

“This is an unintended error, and we can only correct it with this amendment now before us”, the Deputy Senate President said.

Speaking after the bill to amend the 2022 Electoral Act was passed, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, in his remarks, said that the amendment became imperative in view of the deficiency created by the provision of Section 84(8) of the extant Act.

He said, “The amended Electoral Act of 2022 that we passed this year, has a deficiency that was never intended and that deficiency will deny all statutory delegates in all political parties from participation in congresses and conventions.

“And, therefore, such a major and unintended clause has to be amended before the party primaries start in the next eight days. This is emergency legislation, so to speak.

“Our expectation is that the National Assembly – the two chambers – would finish with the processing of the amendment of this bill between today (in the Senate) and tomorrow (in the House of Representatives), and then the Executive will do the assent.

“That is so important to enable every statutory delegate to participate in the party primaries right from the beginning that will start on the 18th of May, 2022.

“So, this is an emergency effort to ensure that nobody is denied his or her rightful opportunity as a delegate, especially the statutory delegates, and these are those who are elected.

“These are the President, Vice President, Members of the National Assembly, Governors, Members of the State Houses of Assembly, Chairmen of Council and their Councillors, National Working Committee Members of all the political parties and so on.

“This is a fundamental effort to ensure that we address this within the week, so that by next week, the Electoral Act, 2022 (amended version), will be very salutary for us to start our party primaries.”
