Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has commiserated with the families of two ex-Senators – Eme Ufot Ekaette and Joy Emodi – over the recent deaths of their distinguished husbands.

According to Senator Omo-Agege, the death of Chief Ufot Ekaette who was Nigeria’s pioneer Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) is a big loss to the Niger Delta region and the nation at large.

A statement issued by the Senator’s Media Office and signed by his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity), Mr. Yomi Odunuga noted that the two late Nigerians were men of great learning who conscientiously contributed towards the betterment of the society.

“Chief Ufot Ekaette’s eighty productive years included service to the nation as the first Nigerian to head the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, he served as SGF from May 1999 to May 2007.

“Before then, he held various positions of responsibility in the public and private sectors, working as Principal Secretary to then Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon and serving in various federal ministries as well as being Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State and later, a non-executive director of First Bank of Nigeria.

“He diligently served Nigeria and the significant role played by him and others became the foundation for peace in the Niger Delta – a foundation upon which we can now collectively build towards attracting new investment, jobs and sustainable development that will benefit future generations in the Niger Delta,” Senator Omo-Agege stated in a message to the Ekaette family.

Also, in a condolence letter to Senator Joy Emodi over the death of her husband, Dr. Okey Emodi, Senator Omo-Agege noted that her husband positively impacted his generation.

“Much has been said about his life seasoned economist, educationist, administrator and father; his university studies of Philosophy, Political Science and Development Economics profoundly illuminated his cerebral thinking.

“As a lecturer, Deputy Director-General of the Centre for UNN’s Inter-Disciplinary and Policy Studies and as Sole-Administrator of the old Onitsha/Ogbaru Local Government Area, he sought to utilize his years of learning for the benefit of the society.

“His membership of the National Committee of Nigerian Vision 20 : 2020 and membership of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Academy of Arts, Science and Technology and the Nigerian Economic Society all affirm the robust all affirm that his 77 years sojourn on earth was a life focused on finer realities and he quietly worked behind the scene, influencing opinions for the common good,” Senator Omo-Agege stated.

  • Tribunal judgement: Omo-Agege condemns ‘barbaric attack’ on Buhari’s supporter

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has condemned what he described as the barbaric stabbing of an All Progressives Congress loyalist in Delta State for allegedly celebrating President Muhammadu Buhari’s electoral victory at the Electoral Tribunal on Thursday.

Noting that such vicious resort to self-help can never reverse the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) electoral and judicial losses to the ruling APC, Omo-Agege said the PDP supporter’s alleged vicious stabbing of a Buhari loyalist is condemnable and must be thoroughly investigated by the police.

Expressing shock and dismay over wide media reports that a PDP member allegedly stabbed an APC member who was celebrating President Buhari’s Thursday judicial victory in Effurun, Delta state, Senator Omo-Agege decried the use of violence in politics, stressing that the police and all political parties in Nigeria should further ensure measures to tackle the menace.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Senator Omo-Agege noted that reports of the ugly incident indicate that the police have already started looking into the matter and urged his constituents in Delta Central Senatorial district to keep calm and cooperate with the law enforcement agents investigating the matter.

“Even though our party, APC and President Muhammadu Buhari had a decisive populist electoral victory, as respecters of the law and democracy, we submitted ourselves to the judicial process and again, achieved incontrovertible victory.

“It is alarming to hear that, last Thursday when all Nigerians who respect the laws of the land were applauding the judicial triumph, someone from the other party took the loss so badly and allegedly took the laws into his own hands in such barbaric manner by attacking an APC loyalist with a broken bottle and almost snuffed out a life in the process.

“Again, I urge the police to ensure thorough investigation and prosecution as deemed necessary in the eyes of the law; our society must not condone such violence and all political parties have a duty to help give their members the orientation of due respect for the law.

“It is futile for anyone to hope that such barbaric reaction can help reverse an overwhelming electoral and judicial loss,” he stated.

Senate condemns insecurity, backs troop deployment on highways

Ovie Omo-Agege, Deputy President of the Senate has said the legislative house is not happy about the growing security challenges facing the country, leading to loss of lives and valuables in many states.
Omo-Agege met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday and spoke with State House correspondents after the meeting which held behind closed doors.
On the security issues in Nigeria, the lawmaker stated that the matter had been raised on the floor of the Senate a number of times, where the federal legislators expressed their disapproval of the current situation.
Omo-Agege added, “We have taken a position on this (insecurity). We are not happy like most Nigerians about what is going on in places, most especially Zamfara State.
“We believe that the head of the security architecture in Zamfara State, being the Commissioner of Police, can do more than they have already done.
“We are encouraging them to do that because Mr President has provided everything that ought to be given to them, everything in terms of funding received, in terms of the acquisition of the weapons that have been provided for them.
“It is now left for them to justify the positions they hold in Zamfara and other states.”
However, he added that the Senate would support any security initiative introduced by the executive to tackle insecurity, especially banditry, kidnapping and armed robbery.
He said that a recent idea mentioned by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo that the Federal Government would deploy soldiers in many locations to confront the criminals was welcomed by the Senate.
Asked whether soldiers could be deployed, Omo-Agege said, “Absolutely. On a good day, it is not something we would encourage because as much as possible, you would want to keep the military in the barracks, but because of the exigencies of the moment, we have no choice but to encourage that.
“Nigerians need to be assured of their safety at all times; that is the essence of governance as guaranteed by the constitution. Therefore, as canvassed and indeed ordered by the Vice-President, that we have the army provide security at the checkpoints, if that will go a long way in preventing kidnapping and banditry, why not?”
