*Omo-Agege tasks Delta APC faithful on unity, commitment to party*

Immediate past Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has tasked the All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders and faithful in Delta State to show commitment to the party by working to eschew rancour and unify the party ahead of 2027 general elections.

Omo-Agege who is the Obarisi of Urhoboland stated this at Ovu-Orhie, Ethiope East Local Government Area, during an enlarged meeting of leaders and stakeholders of APC drawn from all the 11 wards.

The Delta APC leader who was the party’s governorship candidate in the 2023 elections also enjoined all well-meaning party members, particularly in Ethiope Federal Constituency, to close ranks and shun divisive tendencies for the development and the greater good of the constituency and the party at large.

Omo-Agege stated that unlike some leaders of the party who after an election would not be seen again until another elections cycle, he has come to interact with them on the way forward, by looking at areas where the party fared poorly in the last election and how to improve on such lapses to ensure a better outcome in 2027.

While commending the feat recorded by the party in the last election, Omo-Agege said: “After an election, we needed to seat down and evaluate our performance, analyse where we didn’t do well and how to prevent such shortcomings in future elections.

“Though, we didn’t win the governorship as expected, not because we lacked the capacity, but for some internal sabotage by some of the party leaders, we lost.

However, for the first time we won two senatoral seats, one House of Representatives. Today, it has become two and seven House of Assembly seats. No opposition party has been able to achieve this feat since 1999 in Delta State.

“What is a ahead of us going into 2027 is to build a united party that is strong enough to uproot PDP and its years of unproductive governace in Delta and with the recent defection of our real lioness of the Niger Delta, Rt. Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, member representing Ethiope East/Ethiope West Constituency, Federal House of Representatives and Chairman, House Committee on NDDC and some top PDP leaders, APC is well positioned to sweep Ethiope Federal constituency and Delta in 2027.”

Also speaking, Rt. Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu tasked party leaders to show their commitment to APC by investing in the growth and development of the party to position it as a strong force to win elections.

Ibori-Suenu, who is also addressed as real lioness of the Niger Delta, noted that what qualifies anyone as a leader of a party is the level of financial and material investment in the party, charging those claiming to be leaders to live up to expectations.

According to her, “A leader of a party is not the one who will want to divert funds brought for elections purposes, but someone who go beyond what was provided by the party to add his own and ensure that the party wins.

“So, going forward let’s work together, showing commitment to the ideas of the party. When we work collectively, with leaders investing their time and resources, PDP’s days are numbered in Delta.”

Prominent leaders of the party at the meeting include: the acting APC state chairman, Chief Francis Obigbor, Chief Mrs. Judith Emuobonuvie Enamuotor, Chief Francis Atanomeyovwi, Federal Commissioner, National Assembly Service Commission, Mrs. Blessing Brume-Ataguba, Federal Commissioner, National Population Commission.

Others are Hon.Efe Ofobruku, Hon. Oharisi Eric, Hon. Oshevire Joseph,
Hon. Chief Ivwurie Evans, Chief Kent Akigho, Chief Christopher Ominimini, Hon. Innocent Anidi and Mrs. Hopelyn Ayo.

  • FELIX OFOU: Omo-Agege’s epiphany of lies

FELIX OFOU: Omo-Agege’s epiphany of lies

    By Felix Ofou.

Finally, former Deputy Senate President (DSP), Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has woken up from a troubled rest.

A man who was severely defeated in a contest he lost so woefully, deserved the kind of inevitable rest he took. No politician has been given a knockout in Delta State (TKO) the way Omo-Agege was beaten.

The former DSP was roundly defeated by Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori in the 2023 Governorship election in Delta State. His abysmal performance in that poll shocked everyone, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that he was consigned to ignominy thereafter.

Oborevwori won 21 out of 25 local governments in Delta State. He also won by over a 100,000 votes margin, such that it left Omo-Agege’s political party, All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state totally fractured.

For one, that defeat at the polls left Omo-Agege in deep quandary. He had boasted to former President Muhammadu Buhari and Tinubu, then the APC presidential flag bearer that he would make a mince meat of Oborevwori, who was candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Governorship contest.

Following the false expectation that DSP would triumph at the polls, huge sums were allegedly made available to help in prosecuting the contest. The high point was the said release of N80Billion by Buhari for the Agbor-Obiaruku-Abraka-Eku highway with a view to shore up Omo-Agege’s stature in the polls.

Despite assurances of so called federal might and overflow of resources, the APC candidate suffered a shocking defeat that left even his ardent supporters speechless. It turned out that he had been grossly overrated before the elections.

But, the defeat of Obarisi, as he is also called was the climax of a crescendo of events calculated at stopping Oborevwori from becoming Governor of Delta State. The opposition, to which he was the leader had tried unsuccessfully to use the courts to frustrate the candidate of the PDP from being victorious.

It is on record that Oborevwori endured 38 cases unleashed on him by Omo-Agege and his cohorts in various courts, all of which were effectively evacuated by the Supreme Court. This is aside machinations aimed at manipulating agents of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security all of which were similarly thwarted by the PDP.

Till date, work has not commenced on the Agbor-Obiaruku-Abraka-Eku highway. This is in spite of the whopping N80BILLION which Omo-Agege himself announced had been released by Buhari at the start of campaigns for the 2023 general elections.

So, it was a comical diatribe on display to see the former DSP coming out of hiding on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at Oghara, headquarters of Ethiope West local government to claim leadership of the APC, a party fractured on three fronts.

Which of the three known factions of the APC was he referring to when he spoke as leader of the party? Is it the Chief Paulinus Akpeki led APC or that led by Chief Frank Abighor. Or was Omo-Agege talking as head of a group fiercely loyal to the Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, SAN, which interestingly has cornered most of the federal appointments that have been given to Delta APC?

DSP, at the event, tried to cast aspersions on successive administrations that have ruled Delta State after Chief James Ibori, accusing all of them, including the Oborevwori administration of profligacy. What do you expect from a man who has consistently ran for the Governorship of the state after Ibori and lost?

Obviously, Omo-Agege cannot see anything good in Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan who defeated him at the primaries in 2006 and became Governor of Delta in 2007 after Ibori. Neither will he forgive Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa who took over from Uduaghan in 2015 and produced Oborevwori as successor in 2023. This clearly is the case of a sore loser on the prowl.

Obarisi particularly accused the incumbent Governor of wasting Delta State funds and paying debts with what is left in spite of increased federal allocation and revenue accruing from 13% derivation. He also attributed the increased funding to the economic policies of the Tinubu administration at the centre.

How convoluted can a man’s reasoning be? Can we really talk of increased money in any state in Nigeria? What is the worth of such money in the face of galloping inflation, gross devaluation of the Naira, unparalleled hunger, mass poverty, mass unemployment, daily closure of Major factories and multinationals in the country?

Both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have rightly stated that Tinubu’s economic policies are not working. That the policies have transformed Nigeria into the poverty capital of the world, with over 130 million of the population living below the poverty mark.

Is this the model that Omo-Agege is recommending for Delta to copy! A model that has unleashed economic hardship on the people? Why would anyone recommend APC’s T-pain as remedy to our woes? Obviously, this is not a path desirable for Deltans and one they would want to embrace at this time.

Any wonder then that DSP was roundly rejected by the electorate in the last elections. The man is simply out of touch with reality and deserves to be dumped in the dustbin of history. It is therefore not surprising that President Tinubu has also shoved him aside and dealing directly with Keyamo, the Aviation Minister.

For nearly 19 months of the Tinubu led Federal Government, none of Omo-Agege’s close associates has been appointed, either as aides to the President or into boards of parastatals. He remains one of the Governorship candidates of the APC in the 2023 elections that is jobless and without federal appointments.

Tuesday’s outing was a surreptitious ploy at seeking redemption. It was a clever way at seeking penance from party faithful whose hopes were dashed in the 2023 elections and who have been locked out of the Tinubu government as a result of Omo-Agege’s vengeful politics.

However, it is doubtful if DSP succeeded in his plan. Has he reconciled with the President? Why has he not visited Aso Rock to congratulate Tinubu in Abuja, the federal capital since May 29, 2023? How many of his nominees have been accepted for appointments, aside vain promises that something will be done?

The truth is that the man is his own nemesis. When he had opportunity to be DSP what did he really do for Deltans? What projects are standing as legacies of that tenure? Are they testament of a man who truly wants to rule Delta State? Can history be kind to Omo-Agege? Where are the roads?

His party men have spoken out against his style of politics, pointing often to his seeming myopic and narrow-minded worldview. No wonder APC supporters continue to blame him for their loss at the polls.

Aside the Federal Medical University, Kwale whose establishment is traceable to Omo-Agege, pundits claim that other significant projects attracted by him to the state, like the polytechnic and law school campus are said to have been located in Oromoru his village, to the consternation of party faithful.

Though he claims to be from Orogun in Ughelli North LGA, pundits claimed he ignored the main town and opted to develop only his village. They also claimed that aside his younger brother, Jimmy Omo-Agege, the former DSP never truly empowered anyone close to him throughout his tenure in the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

Why would such a man then seek to occupy public office! Why would he continue to deceive himself that the people love him? For how long can he continue to deceive the people into believing that he is the preferred choice of APC? Does he not know that his political career came to an abrupt end with the abysmal performance in the 2023 polls?

What the man really needs to do is to seek forgiveness from party faithful, instead of grandstanding and parading himself as party leader. People entrusted their lives and destiny to his hands and he betrayed them. This is a fact of history that he cannot gloss over or wish away.

Rather than embark on a cacophony of lies, Omo-Agege must apologize to his people and earn their support, where possible. Otherwise, he should return to perpetual hibernation where he has been since May 29, 2023 when Oborevwori took over as Governor of Delta State.

As for His Excellency, the incumbent Governor of Delta State that DSP sought to disparage, he should have realized by now that it was an exercise in futility giving the double honours bestowed on Oborevwori by the Urhobo Council of Traditional Rulers and the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) worldwide.

At an epochal event to mark the 93rd anniversary of the UPU, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the immediate past speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, was inducted into the Urhobo Hall of Fame for sterling performance in government. He was also conferred with title of Omorotomo of Urhobo land by the Urhobo Council of Traditional Rulers representing the 24 clans in Urhobo nation.

In attendance were the leaders of other ethnic groups in the State, notably Isoko, Ijaw, Itsekiri and Anioma. They all attested to Oborevwori’s landmark achievements in office for the past 19 months. How else can the peoples love for a man be gauged when these notable leaders have so declared support for him and his administration?

Our kind advice to Omo-Agege is to seek urgent redemption so as to be accepted by the motley crowd that once supported him. But this must not be done by telling lies or deriding other players in the political system. Otherwise, there may be no pathway to coming out of the present inertia to which his political career has nosedived into

Omo-Agege demands probe of death of Okuama community leader in Army custody*

The Deputy President of the Senate in the 9th Assembly, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has called for a thorough and transparent probe of the reported death in military custody of the President General of Okuama development association, Pa James Achovwuko Oghoroko.

The late community leader had been in detention by the Army after his arrest alongside five other community leaders in August 2024.

The former Deputy President of the Senate represented Delta Central Senatorial District where Okuama community is located from 2015 to 2023. He decried the handling of the issue by the military, saying that its approach to the arrest and detention of the community leaders of Okuama without arraigning them in court is illegal.

“Pa James Achovwuko Oghoroko and the others are not soldiers, but civilians that ought to have been tried in a civil court. Failing to do so and this tragic development has cast a pall on democratic governance in Nigeria. Right now, the people in the area believe their leader was tortured, ultimately leading to his death. A thorough investigation by an independent body is imperative to dispel any inaccurate perception of the entire saga,” Senator Omo-Agege said.
In a press release issued by Sunny Areh, his Media Adviser, the former Deputy Senate President said despite the sad and regrettable killing of some military personnel at Okuama, due proces should be followed in handling the incident. He said that in a democratic society as Nigeria, the legal platform should be used to secure justice for all parties and maintain peace in the area.

He extended his condolences to the family of Pa James Achovwuko Oghoroko and urged the military to heal the ill will by immediately releasing the other five Okuama community leaders still in military detention.

Again, he commiserated with the military on the killing of 17 of its personnel by yet to be identified gun men. Omo-Agege said it is time, however, to deescalate the situation by letting democratic institutions handle the search for justice.

  • Omo-Agege seeks law to protect women against gender-based violence*

Omo-Agege seeks law to protect women against gender-based violence*

In a bid to effectively combat Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV) in tertiary institutions, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has called for safeguarding policies and laws to protect students’ well-being and academic progress.

Speaking at a Public Policy forum which held on Thursday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre Abuja, on creation of safeguarding policies at institutions of higher learning, the Deputy Senate President in the 9th Session of the upper legislative chamber said Nigeria needs to institutionalize safeguards against sexual and gender-based violence.

“The development of safeguarding policies is not merely a preventative measure but a transformative step toward creating a culture of respect and equity in our institutions. This aligns with the fundamental belief that when we educate a woman, we educate a nation. By protecting and empowering our young women, we foster a generation that is resilient, confident, and unburdened by the societal contradictions that have historically impeded their full potential,” Omo-Agege stated.

Represented by Chief Francis Atanomeyovwi, Commissioner (South-South) National Assembly Service Commission, Senator Omo-Agege
recalled his earlier effort to address the issue when he was Deputy Senate President, and said he had sponsored the Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Educational Institutions Prohibition, Prevention, and Redressal Bill.

The bill which was co-sponsored and unanimously supported by the 9th Senate, sought to end the culture of harassment that plagues institutions, where women, especially young female students, often find themselves vulnerable to predatory behaviours by those in positions of power. Although it was passed by the Senate, Omo-Agege regretted that it was eventually not signed into law.

“But Government is a continuous process and efforts should be made by the 10th National Assembly to represent the bill,” he remarked, noting that the principles underpinning the legislation emphasize the doctrine of trust and duty of care that educators and administrators owe to their students.
He urged the participants to “forge a pathway where every student has the right to learn in peace, dignity, and safety. It is only by uniting our voices, efforts, and resources that we can transform our institutions into beacons of safety, equity, and respect.”
The public policy forum was organised by the Yar’Adua Foundation, Ford Foundation, the Gender Mobile Initiative, Education as a Vaccine, and the Nigerian Association of Female Students.

Media practitioners should leverage on AI to seek good governance, says Omo-Agege

With the widespread application of Artificial Intelligence (AI), media practitioners have been urged to leverage on its limitless versatility to seek good governance, social impact and positive change.

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, made the call on Thursday in Asaba in his remarks at the Distinguished Nigerian Awards, organised by Oasis Magazine.

Speaking on “Artificial Intelligence and the Contemporary Media Space,” as distinguished guest of honour, Senator Omo-Agege said AI has had profound impact on virtually every area of business, governance and politics. He said it should be applied in holding accountable those holding public office.

Listing the benefits of AI, the former Deputy Senate President noted that it enables social media monitoring and sentiment analysis as well as equip the people to track governance and its dynamics.

Omo-Agege who was the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 Delta State gubernatorial election and was represented by Mr. Chuks Erhire, noted that as AI is used regularly to verify content to prevent disinformation, it can be deployed to track the performance of government at all levels.
“The integration of AI in the media space necessitates a thoughtful approach, balancing innovation with accountability and transparency to ensure a responsible and beneficial coexistence of humans,” he stated.
He warned that AI-generated content can be misused to create convincing but false information, thereby threatening media credibility, adding that they blur the lines between human and artificial communication.
But by adhering to ethics, training and enlightenment, AI can be used to evolve most practical and beneficial option for societal advancement.

Omo-Agege salutes Ovuozourie Macaulay at 64

Comrade Ovuozourie Macaulay, one-time Secretary to the Delta State Government and veteran labour leader, has been described as a dogged fighter who never wavered in ensuring that workers got fair treatment for their labour.

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, former Deputy President of the Senate, gave the description in a birthday message to mark his 64th birthday, said: “When he led organised labour in Delta as chairman of the state branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), workers were at peace knowing they had entrusted their fortunes into the care of a man they know would not lie or shortchange them. Having earlier led the Delta State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) was no mean fit. NUJ is a union without docile members being media managers.

That he came out unscathed is a testament to his virtue of standing with the people,” Senator Omo-Agege noted that Macaulay brought the same attribute to bear as he continued to climb the leadership ladder that saw him become a Commissioner in two different ministries, Chief of Staff at Government House and eventually Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

“He commands huge respect within labour circle today just as the Isoko nation deservedly holds him in very high esteem. If today’s labour leaders will imbibe his attributes of honesty and integrity, workers will get their fare share without rancour,” the former Deputy Senate President who is also the Obarisi if Urhoboland said.

He urged Macaulay to continue to mentor the younger generation of labour leaders along the lines of steadfast allegiance to ensuring that government remains committed to evolving policies that will empower workers and the generality of Nigerians.

“May God reward him with excellent health for his years of sacrifice to organised labour and the people,” Omo-Agege stated.

The Aniocha South chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) passed on last week after a brief illness.

“In the lead up to the governorship election where I was the candidate for APC, Pastor Michael Osume was not just a pillar of support for the campaign but a reliable partner, strategist and advocate. He understood the dynamics of politics in Delta, an attribute that only a few had.

He was pan-Deltan who held sway in Delta North senatorial district. Due to his tenacity and sagacity, we had a very impressive outing during the governorship election despite the tremendous odds against our party,” Omo-Agege stated in his tribute.

“As an ordained clergy man, he espoused and applied the virtues of Christianity in his conduct of political affairs. If Nigeria had political leaders like him, this country would be on the fast lane to quality leadership and development. My heart goes out to the entire Osume family, the Delta North APC. May God in His infinite mercy and compassion grant his soul absolute repose,” he said.

“On behalf of my family, I want to thank God for your life and to wish you many happy returns of today. As you continue to strive to make our dear nation the envy of other nations through your impactful contributions and selfless service to humanity, I pray that you will live long to see the rewards of your labour.”
