  • Cattle colonies will worsen herdsmen, farmers crisis – Sen. Omo-Agege

A member of the All Progressives Congress, APC and lawmaker representing Delta Central Senatorial district, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has cautioned President Muhammad Buhari to jettison the idea of setting up of cattle colonies in parts of the country stressing that setting up of such colonies would exacerbate crisis in the country.

The lawmaker also warned against the setting up of such colonies in Delta Central senatorial district, stressing that if set up, “cattle colonies will exacerbate the problem and further divide the country along ethnic and religious lines given the widespread opposition in certain parts of the country.”

Senator Omo-Agege in a statement yesterday, explained that a majority of the Urhobo people are strongly opposed to cattle colonies on their land adding that the reason for clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the country today, is as a result of failure on the part of security agencies to enforce the law against the carrying and use of fire arms. He said, “No one wants it and no community is ready to give up its land to those who have killed their people and raped their wives under any circumstances. So count us out of any cattle colony arrangement.”.

Making suggestions on how to curb clashes between herdsmen and farmers, the lawmaker said: “Only the strict enforcement of the fire arms law will ensure the safety of communities and peaceful co-existence of herdsmen and farmers in any part of the country.

“The blame should be on the Nigeria police and other security agencies whose responsibilities are to encore the Fire Arms Act and not President Bihari. “Only the strict enforcement of this law will ensure the safety of communities and peaceful co-existence of herdsmen and farmers in any part of the country.”

  • Taiga condems attack on Omo-Agege

President General of Urhobo Progress Union, worldwide, Olorogun Moses Taiga, has condemned the alleged armed attack on the senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, while on an empowerment programme in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

In a release, Olorogun Taiga urged politicians in Urhobo land, especially and Delta State, in general, to eschew violence as they go about their political activities.

“Nobody should shed the blood of any Urhobo son or daughter for any political reason.”

Taiga urged all Urhobo sons and daughters to come up with programmes to develop the Urhobo Nation and sell such programmes to the electorate rather than resorting to violence.

He thanked God for ensuring that there is no loss of life in the unfortunate attack and urged the security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and get to the root of the matter.

  • Two injured as gunmen open fire on Sen Omo-Agege’s convoy in Delta

…Says ‘the bullet grazed through my right ear’

Senator representing Delta Central at the National Assembly, Ovie Omo-Agege and his wife escaped death on Saturday by the whiskers as some gunmen opened fire on his convoy during an empowerment programme in the state.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the senator visited the Effurun Market in company of his supporters and top members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in continuation of his constituency empowerment programme.

The incident created panic as market women and motorists left their vehicles and scampered for safety when the gunmen opened fire on the senator’s entourage. The incident however left two of the senator’s supporters sustaining different life threatening injuries.

Recounting details of the incident, Senator Omo-Agege said, “There is Igho Majemite. There is Wilson Oki. These are all known thugs in Uvwie. I don’t know who sent them to assassinate me. But I was lucky because the bullet grazed through my right ear. If I was not lucky I would have been dead. Two bullets were shot at me; one was shot by Ayeye and another bullet was shot at me by Ngozi and also, my brother was shot.

Also, we have one of my supporters who was almost killed at Ekpan market all in the presence of police officers who could not even effect any arrest. I have taken a first step by filing a report with the Ekpan Police Division. I have equally spoken with the State Commissioner of Police.

I will take it to the highest level. All I seek is that these undesirable elements who are out to assassinate people are removed from the system. And I will go to any extent to see to this. You cannot attempt to kill a sitting Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I refuse to read any political motivation to this. I’m not in any way saying that there is none.

For those who were beaten and those who were equally shot at, like me, I can assure them that we will get to the very bottom of it. Everybody who is involved in this attempted assassination, we will bring them to face the wrath of the law.”

The Police Commissioner, Mr Zanna Ibrahim, confirmed the attack on Senator Omo-Agege when contacted on Sunday.

Ibrahim added that preliminary investigation into the incident has commenced.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Omo-Agege recently decamped from the Labour Party to the ruling APC.

  • Urhobos are not Biafrians, we are Nigerians – Senator Omo-Agege

Ovie Omo-Agege, the senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly has come out smoking, declaring that the Urhobos who form the majority ethnic group in Delta state are not Biafrans, but Nigerians.

In his words, “the Urhobo Nation has never been, is not and does not wish to be part of Biafra.”

Senator Omo-Agege made this known today a release, he issued, to douse the rising anger in Urhobo land over the claim by IPOB that Urhobos are part of their dreamed Biafra republic.

Senator Omo-Agege in the release said: “With the deluge of concerns being raised by my people, it has become necessary to state with absolute clarity as the Senator for the Urhobo Nation in the 8th Senate of our Federal Republic of Nigeria that the Urhobo Nation has never been, is not and does not wish to be part of Biafra.

“Whereas Article 1 (2) of the United Nations Charter recognizes the “principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples”, this, obviously, does not grant any group the right to arbitrarily usurp the self-determination right of others. MASSOB, IPOB or whatever ethnic-leaning group may have the right to agitate for self-determination for the people they represent.

“But that right would be encroaching and trampling severely and irresponsibly on the rights of other ethnic groups if, without consultations or any consensus whatsoever, they (MASSOB, IPOB or whatever ethnic-leaning group) decide to forcefully include others in their self-determination agenda.

“The Urhobo Nation totally rejects such unforgivable disrespect that touches on our very existence. Indeed, the unilateral inclusion of the Urhobo Nation in the flag or map of Biafra is an abhorrent, and condemnable threat to our people. It is an unacceptable attempt to suppress our own right to self-determination. We will never tolerate it and it must stop forthwith.

“We are cautioning against this trend of arbitrariness and disregard for the rights of others because we know that such a ‘conquest mentality’ has never promoted sustainable peace in human history.

“The Urhobo Nation believes in the unity of the Nigeria Federation. Our preference, as a major strategic partner in our Federation, is to work hard to correct its imperfections, not to break it up into bits and pieces. I will continue to work with my great and highly respected colleagues of Ndigbo extraction and other parts of our country in the National Assembly to perfect our Union, not break it.

“In all, this is our simple and firm position: We are Urhobos and Nigerians, not Biafrans” he concluded
