Omotola@40:How to be sought after in a crowded marketplace

Delectable Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde turns 40 today. The role interpreter who started acting in 1995 does not have anything to prove to anyone at this stage in her career. Omotola was honoured in Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world alongside Michelle Obama, Beyoncé and Kate Middleton. She is undoubtedly one of the most sought after entertainment personalities in these climes.

The sexy mother of four has been able to stay relevant in a competitive entertainment space for more than two decades .Some actresses started out with Omotola, but they are no longer in the game. So what makes ‘Omosexy’ inimitable?

    OMOTOLA JALADE
    1. Authenticity

The actress who also doubles as a real estate doesn’t pretend to be what she is not. Omotola is an entertainer who is vocal about her convictions and true to herself.

She once said in an interview: “I think the government needs to wake up. They go around the world and they brag about Nollywood. Why would you brag about something you’re not developing? It’s not as if they are not doing anything but it’s not enough. They need to understand that Nollywood is a force in itself, it needs a ministry of its own.For a long time, Nollywood was the only thing Nigerians in the diaspora had to brag about Nigeria. We also have a problem in this country, we won’t allow ourselves to be great because we know each other but we support white people if they try to do something. If people in the diaspora say anything bad about Nigeria, Nigerians there use Nollywood movies to show that there are mansions in Nigeria.”. That’s how authentic Omotola is.

    1. Reinvent your brand

In 2004, Omotola and the likes of Richard Mofe Damijo, Stella Damascus, Nkem Owoh, Pete Edochie, were banned for charging too much for movie appearances as a result of their popularity. Rather than coil into obscurity, Omotola found solace in her music talent. She released an album in 2005 titled ‘Gba’ produced by the late OJB Jezreel. The album featured Ruggedman, Pasto Goody Goody, Six O and others. Though music pundits are not convinced about her singing talent, but Omotola still reinvented herself during that turbulent period in her career.

    1. Be an aspirational brand

Truth be told every budding and rising actress aspires to be like Omotola. The Ondo born actress has managed to create magic out of balancing her work life and the home front. She is an aspirational brand, the actress every actress wants to be like.

Award winning actress and filmmaker , Omoni Oboli once said this about her: “She is the mother of four children and has managed to stay in shape, not only for the screen, but for her husband. She is truly an icon in the movie industry and in Nigeria as a whole. She has shown that with hard work, consistency, diligence, focus and a desire to achieve, there is nothing that can stop your rise to the top of your game”.

We need to get back to respecting substance over money- Omotola Jalade Ekeinde

Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde who will turn 40 on February 7 has shared her sentiments over how society values money above substance.

Omotola revealed that the absence of money doesn’t mean substance is deficient.

The revered actress made the comment against the backdrop of celebrities who live fake lives.

She said: “When you are not rich, It doesn’t mean that you don’t have substance. We need to get back to respecting substance instead of respecting money. We need to start respecting people who are intelligent, who have something to offer. We need to get back to the basics and start to respect those values, instead of respecting money. It’s a cultural problem, it’s a societal problem “she told Goldmyne TV.

It is easy to get carried away in Nollywood- Omotola Jalade Ekeinde

Omotola over the years has become a voice in Nollywood. The actress and entrepreneur fondly called ‘Omosexy’ is a force to reckon with who inspires young Nigerians

The beautiful mother of three in a recent interview noted that It is easy to get carried away in Nollywood. She stated that she has always been a perfectionist who loves to compete.

“The thing about Nollywood is that it’s very addictive, so when you get into it even if you were not that interested, you just get carried away. It just takes you away except you are truly not supposed to be there. But If at least you were supposed to be there, You will just find yourself getting deeper into it.I always wanted to be a singer really not being an actor funny enough. But I started out acting because this is what fell on my lap.

“ For me it was pretty much about wanting to conquer. I started out very hungry for perfection. I have always wanted to be a perfectionist. So when I started out, I started to investigate things, and how I could make them better. I have always been competitive, but not with others, with myself. I have always wanted to be the best, I possibly could be. So I think of how I can make things better and be more”.

  • Omotola, Kate Henshaw, others make Novia’s ‘Best actress’ list

Nigerian film critic and filmmaker, Charles Novia is known for his caustic and blunt criticisms when it comes to Nollywood.

His yearly ‘Best Actress’ list has become an activity actors, movie practitioners and the media anticipate every year.

Below is the 5 best Nollywood actresses of 2017, according to Charles Novia

    NUMBER 5: KATE HENSHAW

After a hiatus of sorts, perhaps ‘building up’ somewhere (if the pun is noticed), Kate returned and showed her prowess in two movies in 2017; ‘Roti’ and ‘The Women’. Showing her trademark ability to interpret roles in genres, Kate had a point to prove with her return to the big screen. I was impressed.

    NUMBER 4: ZYNELL ZUH

I later found out that Zynell is a Ghanaian after I watched her in ‘Hire a Man’. Doesn’t matter. She was quite good in the movie and I had to search her out in a couple of other movies in the preceding year too. There’s an intensity in her acting and this lady knows her onions (or would one say her jollof since she’s from Ghana!). One to watch, this Zynell.

    NUMBER 3: SHAFFY BELLO

In the Africa Magic popular series, ‘Battleground’, Shaffy is a delight to watch as she interpretes her role with great panache and precision. She’s got one of the best articulation I have ever heard in the industry and though, she’s much too overexposed in other TV series too, she is quite an actress. Well done, Shaffy!

    NUMBER 2: OMOTOLA JALADE-EKEINDE

A return to the big screen after some years in hiatus, saw Omotola sizzle in the movie ‘Alter Ego’ where she plays a mentally challenged lady with deep conflicts. She was also outstanding in the movie ‘The Tribunal’ as Arese. It was a good comeback for Omotola in 2017 and worthy of mention…and awards too.

    NUMBER 1: OMOWUNMI DADA

I must confess I had no clue who Omowunmi Dada was at the beginning of the year. I kid you not. But seeing her in ‘Omugwo’ startled me and I began asking questions and got pleasant answers.

I backtracked to a few other movies she featured in over the years and also watched her much on ‘Jemeji’. This is an actress on the rise and one who will blow..or has blown? It doesn’t matter. There is a pristine naturalism in Ms Dada’s acting and she is a delight to watch. Two thumbs up. She’s my pick for The Best Actress in 2017 *Next: My Best 5 Nollywood Actors in 2017.

  • Taking a break from acting didn’t affect me financially- Omotola Jalade

Taking a break from acting didn’t affect me financially- Omotola Jalade

Screen goddess and entrepreneur, Omotola Jalade got many of her fans excited when she returned to Nollywood after a three-year hiatus. The actress who returned to the industry with her new movie, Alter Ego has stated that her other businesses sustained her during her break from acting.

Unknown to many, Omotola has business interests in real estate and other sectors.

When asked how she was able to cope financially during her three-year break, she said: ”I do other businesses aside from acting that I necessarily don’t want to talk about. Leaving the Industry didn’t affect me financially because I do other things and I have a partner. Also being a celebrity helps me in my other businesses. Being a celebrity gives you leverage, favour and opportunities”.

Amazingly, Omotola still believes in traditional principles of marriage. She stated that she believes in the role of a man and a woman and what they can offer in a marriage. According to her: “I believe in the traditional sense of marriage and what relationships should look like. I have always been an independent woman, I started working and paying school fees of my younger ones at the age of 15″.
