AFCON: My country comes first, you can keep criticising me – Andre Onana

Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana has come out fighting regarding his status at the African Cup of Nations.

Onana completed a long journey from Manchester to the tournament in the Ivory Coast over the weekend.

He played against Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday, before flying for Cameroon’s opener against Guinea on Monday.

However, travel troubles meant he arrived a little later than scheduled and was not in the squad.

“I have a lot to say but I will not say it here because we are in competition,” Onana told Canal Plus on Monday night.

“Let me continue to be criticized, I am used to it. I do what is good for my country.

“It’s like choosing between my father and my mother, but my country comes first; that’s why I’m here. We are together. We are here to win [the tournament].”

Former Chelsea goalie, Schwarzer urges United to replace Onana with Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale

Mark Schwarzer a former Chelsea goalkeeper, has urged Manchester United to make a move for Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

According to Schwarzer, Ramsdale is far better than Man United’s current first-choice keeper, Andre Onana.

He said the England shot-stopper will be an excellent signing for the Red Devils in the ongoing January transfer window.

Ramsdale has fallen down in his team’s pecking order following David Raya’s arrival on a season-long loan deal from Brentford last summer.

Onana, on the other hand, has made some high-profile errors for Man United and he is set to depart for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, to represent his country Cameroon.

“But if he didn’t go to Chelsea, where else is there for Ramsdale? There is Manchester United, which I think would also be an excellent destination for him,” Schwarzer told Optus Sport

“He is far better than Andre Onana in my opinion, but probably not in Erik ten Hag’s opinion, as he will most likely stick with his summer signing given how much he has backed him through his early struggles at Old Trafford so far.”

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is rethinking his commitment to Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Onana is due to turn out for Cameroon in the tournament which will run from January 13 to February 11.

And he is rethinking his commitment after a series of poor performances for United in recent weeks, says The Sun.

Onana is worried about his long-term place under pressure from backup keeper Altay Bayindir and feels he still needs to prove himself as the club’s outright No1.

United manager Erik ten Hag recently stated: “We are pleased with the goalkeeping group. They have to push each other.

“We are very pleased with Altay who is doing very well, he just has to be patient.

“If he works well and continues his progress, he will get his chance and will have to take it.”

UCL: Onana makes simple saves look difficult – Scholes fumes

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is under fire after several Champions League howlers.

The Cameroonian international was at fault for two of the three goals United conceded on Wednesday night in Turkey.

Despite leading 2-0 and 3-1 against Galatasaray in Istanbul, United had to settle for a 3-3 draw as Onana let in two Hakim Ziyech free-kicks.

Following the match, club legend Paul Scholes told TNT Sports: “Well what can you say again it is a terrible mistake again. I am not sure what he is trying to do, it is weak.

“He makes people nervous, he makes his team nervous and he makes simple saves look difficult. We will have goalkeeper experts who know better than us but I don’t think he should be beaten at the near post, I think his positioning is poor.

“To me, all three goals are down to him.”

Andre Onana supports Garnacho over gorilla emoji post

Manchester United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, said teammate Alejandro Garnacho should not face any repercussions for his use of gorilla emojis in a recent social media post.

The 19-year-old Garnacho included the emojis in a post featuring a photo of himself and Onana celebrating the Cameroonian goalkeeper’s remarkable save of an injury-time penalty against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday.

Garnacho later deleted the post, but English media reported that the Football Association (FA) had been made aware of the post and contacted the Argentinian.

“People cannot choose what I should be offended by. I know exactly what Garnacho meant: power & strength. This matter should go no further,” Onana wrote on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Garnacho has made no comment about his deleted post or about being contacted by the FA.

United won the Champions League Group A match at home against the Danish champions 1-0, thanks to a header from Harry Maguire.

However, Manchester United could have dropped two points if Onana had not saved Jordan Larsson’s penalty several minutes into stoppage time.

We know Onana not good enough – Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says he’s aware Andre Onana has not met expectations so far this season.

However, Ten Hag will continue to back his new goalkeeper.

He said: “He knows [he’s not been good enough], we know, he will do much better. As with every player who’s coming into the Premier League, you need an integration period but he has to step up. Big United keepers like Peter Schmeichel and David De Gea started [slowly] and Andre knows that it is good to know a little bit from history.

“We live now, we live in the future and he has to make his future by giving better performances. I’m sure he will do. He showed it at Barcelona, Ajax, Inter Milan, he was in the semi-final and the final of the Champions League, I’m sure he will give a great performance.”

On facing Sheffield United tomorrow night, Ten Hag also stated: “You can’t restart, but there is a strong dressing room. They are aligned, determined and willing to win games. That is what we have seen. In the end, we beat them and physically we were very strong, mentally, we kept going and were very strong.”

United signed Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir in a £4.3m deadline day deal.

And there is now an internal push for Bayindir to be given his chance with Onana wobbling as he is.

What Man Utd can expect from Onana – Daley Blind

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has received significant praise this week.

The Cameroonian, who has experienced a tough start to life at the club, is “one of the great goalkeepers in the world.”

That is the view of former United and Ajax defender Daley Blind, who gave a wide ranging interview to The Athletic recently.

Blind explained of the goalkeeper: “He’s one of the great goalkeepers in the world.

“He has a nonchalance, he’s complete and when he has his head right he can be one of the best goalkeepers.

“He’s a winner. Always wants to train more. I had a good relationship with him.”

  • De Gea also had difficult start – Evans defends Onana

De Gea also had difficult start – Evans defends Onana

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has urged teammate Andre Onana not to be “too harsh on himself”.

Onana is being questioned after a shaky start to his United career, which included a major error in defeat at Champions League opponents Bayern Munich. Onana later blamed himself for the 4-3 loss.

“It’s a big thing for him to do that,” said Evans to TNT Sports. “He didn’t have to do that. But I think it’s very difficult for any player coming to a new club to hit the ground running and maybe he’s been a bit harsh on himself.

“I’ve seen that quite a lot. And I’ve experienced that myself.

“He’s replacing David de Gea, who was here for a long time. Again, remember, David at the start of his career at Manchester United, maybe went through a bit of a tough time to settle in and we saw what sort of career he would go on to have for this club.”
