How Lukaku convinced me about Everton – Onana

Former Manchester United and Everton star Romelu Lukaku played a role in Amadou Onana signing for Everton a year ago.

The midfielder is now a United target, as manager Erik ten Hag seeks to bolster his midfield.

While Lukaku may not have left United on the best of terms, he played a critical role in convincing his countryman Onana to sign for Everton when they were in for him last summer.

“I know it [Everton] is a big, big club,” Onana revealed, per The Mirror.

“I know about the rivalry between Everton and Liverpool and I have heard about it from Rom [Lukaku].

“He told me all about the club. The relations between Belgians and this club have been successful so why not with me?”

Onana vs Ramsdale: Rio Ferdinand picks better goalkeeper

Former England international and Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand has said that Andre Onana is a better goal keeper than Aaron Ramsdale of Arsenal.

According to Ferdinand, Onana’s resume is far greater than Ramsdale and that makes him a better goal keepr.

He said this while explaining why he would choose Onana over Ramsdale in his combined XI.

Asked to give a combined XI of both Man United and Arsenal on the SDS podcast, Ferdinand said: “Onana because his resume tells me he is ahead of Ramsdale.

I think Ramsdale’s been a huge signing for Arsenal. [They have] needed a goalkeeper that they can rely on for a number of years now. He has been consistent. I think his all-round game is very good, and he is good with his feet.”

Pre-season Games: Onana debuts as Real Madrid beat Man Utd 2-0

Manchester United suffered its first defeat of the pre-season games after losing 2=0 to Real Madrid.

Red devils midfielder, Kobbie Mainoo went off with an injury that he had sustained inside the opening two minutes of the match

New signee, Jude Bellingham opened his goal scoring account for the Galaticos after lashing to a true pass from Aurelien Tchouameni and lobbying the ball pass debutant Andre Onana to put the Spanish side into the lead.

In the 89th minute, Joselu doubled Madrid’s effort with a prefect acrobatic goal to seal the victory.

Erik ten Hag fielded a strong team in Texas, with Mainoo the only starter who could not credibly claim to be a regular first-team starter for his club last season.

The manager made wholesale changes during the second half but United could not find an equaliser, and Joselu wrapped up the victory for Madrid late on.

It was a poor start to Onana’s United career, but thereafter he showed why Erik ten Hag bought him, with his ability to play out from the back, unlike his predecessor David De Gea.

Onana showcased his shot-stopping ability in the 25 th minute, palming away an angled shot from Vinicius Jr.

This was the Reds’ fifth pre-season game after victories over Leeds, Lyon and Arsenal, and a loss to Wrexham last night, when a youthful side was fielded against the League Two new boys in San Diego.

  • World Cup: Song gives hint on why he kicked Onana out of Cameroon squad

World Cup: Song gives hint on why he kicked Onana out of Cameroon squad

Cameroon coach Rigobert Song has given reasons why goalkeeper Andre Onana was not included in his squad.

Song says Onana asked not to play their second group match at the World Cup amid reports of a falling out between the pair in Qatar.

The report added that things are believed to have gotten heated between Song and Onana during a training session over the weekend when the Cameroon coach asked his goalkeeper to change his style of play.

Onana came through Barcelona’s academy and spent years playing in Ajax’s possession-focused team, with a play style of building up from the back via the keeper.

But Song felt that style didn’t suit his Cameroon team and told Onana to go more direct and not take any risks near his own goalpost, instead wanting to see more ‘traditional’ goalkeeping.

It appeared that Onana did not take too kindly to Song’s suggestion, with the report claiming the pair had a rather significant bust-up.

Inter Milan keeper Onana started for the Indomitable Lions in their Group G opener against Switzerland, a 1-0 defeat, but he was replaced by Devis Epassy for Monday’s 3-3 draw against Serbia.

He was not listed among the substitutes.

According to BBC, the 26-year-old had been sanctioned for disciplinary reasons, but no details have been released by the country’s football federation.

“He is an important player, but we are in a difficult tournament,” said Song.

“I know what I have to do, and that is to ensure that the team takes precedence over any individuals.

“Andre wanted to step out and we accepted that position. In a squad, discipline is important.”

Onana started all of Cameroon’s games this year, having served a nine-month doping ban last year.

Cameroon goalkeeper Onana involved in a ghastly car accident

Cameroon’s number 1 goalie and Ajax goalkeeper, Andre Onana, was on Tuesday morning involved in a ghastly car crash on his way to play for Cameroon in their 2022 FIFA World Cup playoffs against Algeria.

The goalie came out of the accident unhurt after seeing his car collide with another with both bonnets shattered.

It was gathered that Onana was travelling from Doualla to yaounde for the Indomotable Lion’s Worldcup play-offs with the Desert foxes

Onana has been rated as one of the most exciting young goalkeepers in world football in recent years before his career was blighted by a failed drugs test.

The 25-year-old was banned for one year by UEFA after testing positive for Furosemide but claimed he had accidentally taken his wife’s medication.

Onana was in goal for hosts Cameroon at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they finished third.

It remains to be seen if Onana will be totally fit for the Cameroon, versus Algeria clash

  • Why Onana must not join Arsenal – Sneijder

Why Onana must not join Arsenal – Sneijder

Former Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder has advised Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana to join Real Madrid or Barcelona rather than Arsenal.

The 37-year-old believes the Gunners have dipped in form in recent years, having last played in the Champions League in the 2016-17 season.

In the recently concluded 2020-21 season, Arsenal finished eighth on the Premier League table, thus, failing to qualify for any European competition.

“I expect him to leave. I think he is a great goalkeeper. European top? Yes, certainly,” Sneijder told Voetbal International Live.

“I’d rather not see him at Arsenal. It’s a fantastic club, but it has slipped in recent years. I’d rather see him play at Real Madrid or FC Barcelona.”

Sneijder also believed the suspension of the Cameroon international should have been reduced to six months by the apex court.

“I think it’s nonsense, If you can reduce such a sentence by three months, why not by six months?” he continued.

Onana has doping ban reduced to 9 months by CAS

Ajax goalkeeper, Andre Onana has had his doping ban reduced to nine months from a year, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said on Thursday.

The Cameroonian can play again from Nov. 3.

The CAS judges found that Onana was not substantially at fault after Ajax appealed against the original UEFA sanction.

Onana tested positive for furosemide, a banned diuretic, last October. It is often used as a masking agent to hide the presence of other drugs.

Onana said he felt unwell and took a pill prescribed to his girlfriend from a packet he mistook for aspirin “because the packaging was almost identical.”

  • Ajax Goalkeeper Onana Suspended For One Year

Ajax Goalkeeper Onana Suspended For One Year

UEFA’s disciplinary body has suspended Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana for one-year over doping, the Dutch club confirmed on Friday.

“After an “out of competition” check on October 30 last year, the goalkeeper found the substance Furosemide in his urine,” Ajax noted in a statement on their website. “The suspension is effective from today and applies to all football activities, both national and international.”

The Amsterdam-based club explained that Onana had felt unwell on October 30th, 2021 and wanted to take a bill to ease the discomfort caused by the illness.

“Unknowingly, however, he took Lasimac, a drug that his wife had previously been prescribed,” the club added. “Onana’s confusion resulted in him mistakenly taking his wife’s medicine, ultimately causing this measure to be taken by UEFA against the goalkeeper.”

The 1995 Champions League winners, however, quoted the UEFA body as saying that the 24-year-old former Barcelona youngster did not have any intention of cheating but said: “the European Football Association believes, on the basis of the applicable anti-doping rules, that an athlete has a duty at all times to ensure that no banned substances enter the body.”

Despite the suspension, Ajax and the player will be pushing for a reversal at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), the statement further noted.

“We explicitly renounce performance-enhancing drugs, we obviously stand for a clean sport. This is a terrible setback, for Andre himself but certainly also for us as a club,” the team’s Managing Director, Edwin van der Sar added.

“Andre is a top goalkeeper, who has proven his worth for Ajax for years and is very popular with the fans. We had hoped for a conditional suspension or for a suspension much shorter than these twelve months, because it was arguably not intended to strengthen his body and thus improve his performance. ”
