  • Ondo Poll: NGO condemns vote buying

Condemning what it called serious vote buying during the Ondo Governorship election, the Centre for Democracy Development (CDD), a non-govermental Organasation (NGO), on Saturday alleged that politicians engaged in the fraud.

The CDD Director, Idayat Hassan, disclosed this during an interactive session with newsmen in Akure, the state capital.

Hassan said CDD noted that politicians still devised ways to engage in vote buying, warning that the electoral offence is fraudulent and poses danger to democracy if it is not adequately curbed.

According to her, “We observed a consistent pattern of vote buying, with those engaged in it adopting tactics to induce voters, while evading security officials and election observers.

“Our observers documented attempts by politicians to outspend each other by disbursing large sums of money to community leaders for onward distribution to voters.

“Deviating from their previous style of distributing cash discreetly at points close to the polling units, the politicians created outposts where voters can go to collect cash after proving that they voted for the vote-buying party.

“Our observers reported that party agents largely stayed away from coordinating vote buying but their parties designated someone who is not a party agent and appears to be neutral to direct voters to their outposts to collect cash,” she said.

She said as highlighted in a preliminary report, parties set aside bulk sums of money, ranging from N150,000 to N600,000, for each polling unit across the LGA.

Hassan further alleged that the monies were distributed to popular figures, especially leaders of youth groups, to share to voters in their areas.

The group commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the timely arrival of its officials and materials to the polling units across the state.

CDD said in general, INEC officials and security agents arrived at the Polling Units between 7 am and 8 am, but pointed out that INEC officials were attacked towards the end of voting.

Hassan noted that CDD observers reported cases of hoodlums chasing away Registration Area Centre (RAC) technicians in Akure South Local government.

“The attacks compromised the transparency of the electoral process because the upload of results into the INEC Results Viewing Platform was disrupted.

“These RAC technicians are responsible for maintaining the Smart Card Readers, and preventing them from doing their duty also created problems in the area of maintaining faulty card readers.

The group commended voters across the state for their determination and resilience to peacefully exercise their franchise and in many cases defend the sanctity of the ballot in very challenging conditions.

BREAKING: Ondo 2020: ZLP members defect to APC

Some members of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in Ondo State, on Monday, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akure, ahead of the October 10 governorship election in the state.

The defectors were led by Mr Busayo Olamigoke, a former ZLP Chairman in Ondo East Local Government area, who recently resigned from the party.

Olamigoke, popularly called Bullet, came with some ZLP ward chairmen as well as ward youths and women leaders to the APC secretariat in Akure.

Welcoming the defectors, the APC Chairman in the state, Mr Ade Adetimehin, stated that ZLP’s fortune in the state had nosedived, with the collapse of its structure in Ondo East council area.

Adetimehin described the former ZLP chairman as ‘a notable politician and viable asset to any political party’, asking him and other defectors to go to ‘their wards and shine’.

“We don’t discriminate in APC. Your efforts and commitment to the party, particularly now that we are going into an election, will stand you out for recognition,” he said.

Speaking earlier, Olamigoke explained that they were moved by the achievements of Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu in less than four years and their resolve to belong to the mainstream of the state politics.

The event was witnessed by the member representing Ondo East Constituency in the state House of Assembly, Mr Olumide Olajidi, and an APC chieftain from the council area, Chief Olabisi Johnson, among others.

Ondo 2020: 10 political parties agree to adopt consensus candidate

Ten political parties have agreed to work for a consensus candidate during the governorship election in Ondo State on Oct. 10.

The parties are working together under the Conference of INEC Registered Political Parties (CIRPP).

The CIRPP said this in Lagos on Thursday in a statement jointly issued by its Chairman, Mr Olugbemi Ogunbameru (SDP), Secretary, Comrade Israel Ayeni (AAC) and some other members of the coalition.

It, however, said it had not decided on any consensus candidate for now, but would make its position known soon.

“The CIRPP Will, however, make its position known as to who to support and work for within 72 hours,” the coalition said.

“The CIRPP, hereby, informs the general public that the committee has not adopted any candidate for the slated election as insinuated by the public and envisaged by a group of persons who are not members of registered political parties.

“There are earlier insinuations that the CIRPP is working and supporting a particular party, but there is nothing of such.”

According to it, the sole objective of the body is to seek, propagate credibility and ensure good governance in the Sunshine State for the betterment of our democracy without political sentiment.

The coalition said that development, would in turn, enable all citizens and residents of Ondo State to have the full benefit of the dividends of democracy.

“It is our priority to ensure that the people of Ondo State will be guided to vote for the right person.

“It is our joy that a compassionate person wins in the forthcoming election,” it said.

The statement was co-issued by Dr Ajibola Falaiye (Accord), Mr Olaoluwa Adesanya (APP), Chief Tokunbo Adetoro (ADC) and Prince Niran Toyin (APGA).

Others in the coalition are Mr Felix Funso Oloro (APM), Mr Olagookun Peter (NNPP) Mrs Funmilayo Ataunoko (NRM) and Mr Amos Agunloye (LP).
