Ondo primary: Protesters besiege APC secretariat over alleged irregularities

Some aggrieved members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State on Sunday protested at the party’s secretariat in Akure over alleged electoral irregularities in the ongoing governorship primary in the state.

The Gov. Usman Ododo-led seven-member committee had declared the Saturday’s primary inconclusive.

The committee said the exercise would continue in the 13 wards of Okitipupa Local Government area of the state with a total validated registered members of 9,515 from 12 noon on Sunday.

The protesters with placards were singing solidarity songs leading to traffic gridlock on the busy Oba-Adesida/Oyemekun Road.

They accused the committee of bringing phantom results from the primary, saying that there was no election in all the 203 wards in the state.

The protesters who alleged that forged results were put together by the committee, called for the cancellation of the exercise which they described as “Kangaroo primary.”

The placards were with different inscriptions such as: “No election in Ondo State,” and “APC primary electoral officers failed to show up in all wards in Ondo State.”

Others are: “We Demand Fairness and Justice in APC Primary Election in Ondo State”, “APC Must Not Collapse In Ondo State,” and “Primary Election Materials Were not Distributed in all Wards.”

The protesters, who were supporters of Olusola Oke, Wale Akinterinwa and Jimi Odimayo, called for fresh primary in the interest of peace.

Addressing journalists, the Director-General of Olusola Oke Campaign Organisation, Ondo Central Senatorial District, Mr Adeniran Oyebade, who spoke on behalf of the protesters, described the election as a broad-day robbery.

“We are protesting against our mandate that was stolen. It was a broad-day robbery, a monumental disaster.

“APC delegated some people to Ondo State to conduct the primary; apparently, that was never done.

“They remained in Akure and started writing results. They wrote the results of all the 203 wards in the State, taking the mandate of the people into their own hands.

“At the end of the day, we started seeing different results flying around stating one particular aspirant won the election, but that never happened.

“APC as a party is about to set Ondo State on fire, and we will never take this lightly. We want the most popular aspirant; an aspirant that knows the people; we want the aspirant whose name is a household brand in every part of Ondo State,” he said.

Oyebade called for the suspension of Gov. Usman Ododo of Kogi from the party.

“Ododo should be suspended from the party. He is not fit for the kind job.

“Electoral fraud is a serious crime. You cannot come to the wards of our people and start terrorising them against their will.

“What we want is the cancellation of the primary because election did not take place. There is no need to say that the election was inconclusive,” he said.

Mr Ade Adeniyi and Mr Bola Fisayo also said APC members, who were eligible to vote for their preferred aspirants, waited for the conduct of the primary but to no avail.

Ondo APC primary: Aiyedatiwa reacts after clinching guber ticket

Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State on Monday appreciated President Bola Tinubu for allowing enabling environment for the peaceful conduct of the Saturday’s governorship primary in the state.

Aiyedatiwa stated this in his acceptance speech after his emergency as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Nov. 16 governorship election in the state.

Usman Ododo, the Chairman of the Governorship Primary Election Committee for Ondo State and Governor of Kogi, had on Monday declared Aiyedatiwa as the winner of the Saturday’s primary.

Ododo said that Aiyedatiwa polled 48,569 votes to defeat his closest rival, Mr Mayowa Akinfolarin, who had 15,343 out of 95,178 valid votes.

Aiyedatiwa also appreciated the national and state working committee of the party for ensuring that the “best candidate emerged” as the party’s standard bearer.

He also commended other contestants for their sportsmanship and urged them to join hands with him to ensure the party’s victory in the November election.

“Democracy sometimes comes with discordant tunes. This is not the time to hold grudge against one another, but for all of us to come together so as to remain in power,” he said.

Ondo APC primary is sheer show of shame – Akinterinwa

Meanwhile, the Wale Akinterinwa Campaign Organisation has described the governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state on Saturday as a show of shame.

Mr Wale Akinterinwa, a former Commissioner in the government of the late Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu, is one of the 16 aspirants seeking the party’s ticket to contest the Nov. 16 governorship election.

The Spokesperson of the organisation, Mr Segun Ajiboye, in a statement on Sunday in Akure, said that no election was held in the state by the Gov. Usman Ododo-led primary election committee.

“Without any fear of contradiction, we state here that no election was held in any part of Ondo State on Saturday to elect the candidate of the APC.

“It is on record with incontrovertible evidence that nothing in the semblance of a primary election was held in all the 203 wards in Ondo State.

“At best, what can be said to have happened was that the committee chairman, Gov. Ododo, arrived in the state at about 8 am on Saturday to write the result of an election that was never conducted.

“Saturday’s election presented our dear party with a rare opportunity to endear itself to the people of the state.

“All that was needed was for us to organise an election that would be hailed by all, even the opposition.

“But we bungled the opportunity with the sham organised by the electoral committee,” he stated.

Ajiboye explained that the committee’s assurance to conduct a free and fair primary election was dashed and not fulfilled.

“It was not surprising that what Gov. Ododo did on Saturday was far distant from what was promised.

“However, what was surprising was the audacity and the indecent manner the election committee actualised its plot, which was scripted and directed to favour a particular candidate,” he stated.

According to him, never before in the history of the APC has it witnessed anything close to what was put on display on Saturday.

“The supportive and hardworking members of the APC were robbed and made to understand or believe that their votes do not count,” Ajiboye said.

He, however, commended the resilience and perseverance of the  supporters of Akinternwa across the 203 electoral wards in the state, assuring them that their efforts were noted.

“We, therefore, most respectfully appeal to all our supporters to remain calm and peaceful, law-abiding, and conduct themselves most responsibly while we explore legal and democratic ways to register our grievances.

“We assure you that our principal, Wale Akinterinwa remains absolutely undaunted and deeply committed to the tenets of democracy.

“Let the world know that this is not about Wale Akinterinwa. It is our contribution to deepen democracy and for a better life for our people.

“It is about the future of our state,” the organisation’s spokesman said.

Ododo appreciated all party members who participated  in the exercise for their courage and perseverance, describing the primary election as peaceful.

He said that the real work had just begun, adding that the aspirants and their supporters should not allow the results of the primary election to divide them.

The chairman asked the party members to be in unity in order to come out more united and stronger in the subsequent political contests.

The party adopted the direct mode for the conduct of the primary which held on Saturday.

However, due to some irregularities a rerun was ordered on Sunday in the 13 wards in Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state.

“The MD/CEO has also directed that we replicate this legacy project across all states in the Niger Delta, and we thank the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for giving the NDDC a performing Governing Board that has the interest of the people at heart.

“We are committed to lighting up all the local government areas and the oil-producing communities in Ondo South Senatorial District.

“This is part of NDDC’s mandate to provide infrastructure and development projects in the Niger Delta region. The Commission is committed to fulfilling this mandate by completing all on-going projects,” he said.

Antai stated that the power sub-station would provide electricity to over 2,000 communities across the five local government areas within the oil-producing region of Ondo State, significantly impacting lives by ending decades of darkness.

The Executive Director, Projects noted that the NDDC had also awarded contract for the total rehabilitation of the distribution network because it was eager to hook up the power lines to the injection sub-station and enable the benefiting communities to enjoy electricity from the national grid.

Mr Benson Obayelu, who spoke for the contracting firm, said that the scope of the power project covered the evacuation of light from Omotosho Power Station with a step down at Ode-Erinje, Okitipupa, through a 132KV double circuit transmission line with two 30/40MVA transformers.

According to him, the transmission lines run through Ireje with 145 electricity towers that are standing on concrete foundations.
