Eid-el-Kabir: Police assure residents of watertight security in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has assured residents of robust and watertight security arrangements to ensure a peaceful Eid-Kabir celebration across the state.

Mr Wilfred Afolabi, State Commissioner of Police, gave the assurance in a statement made available to newsmen by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, on Thursday in Akure.

Afolabi said he had ordered the strategic deployment of personnel to all Eid praying grounds, major public places, and other critical locations in recognition of the spiritual importance of the festive season.

According to him, tactical teams, detectives, and intelligence operatives have been mobilised to prevent any security breach and respond swiftly to any potential threat.

He, therefore, directed the area commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to intensify patrols, maintain high visibility policing, and provide watertight security in all places of prayer and public centers.

“This coordinated effort is part of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and properties during and after the festivities.

“We are extending warm Eid-el-Kabir greetings to all Muslim faithful, urging them to emulate the virtues of obedience, selflessness, and compassion that define this holy celebration.

“Citizens are also encouraged to engage in charitable deeds, pray for the continued peace, security, and progress of Ondo State and Nigeria at large, and to celebrate responsibly within the bounds of the law,” he said.

Afolabi, who reiterated the command’s unwavering commitment to the safety and security of all residents, warned  that any attempt to disrupt public peace would be met with the full weight of the law.

  • Ondo governorship: Gov Aiyedatiwa reacts over tribunal victory

Ondo governorship: Gov Aiyedatiwa reacts over tribunal victory

The Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on Wednesday in Akure upheld the victory of Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa in the Nov.16, 2024 election and declared petitions against him as speculative.

In a unanimous judgment, the three-member panel headed by Justice Benson Ogbu, said that the petitioners were not able to prove the allegations of over voting, non compliance with Electoral Act 2022 “beyond reasonable doubt.”

Justice Benson Ogbu, Justice Imelda Etiape, and Justice Daurabu Sikkam, affirmed Aiyedatiwa’s victory and dismissed all petitions filed against him.

The tribunal, which began sitting on Jan. 31, received five petitions challenging the outcome of the election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Aiyedatiwa, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress(APC), winner of the election.

The five petitioners were seeking the nullification of the election on grounds of non-compliance with the provisions of Electoral Act.

The petitioners are: Action Alliance( AA) and its candidate, Mr Abdullahi Olowokere; and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its candidate, Chief Bamidele Akingboye.

Others are: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Mr Agboola Ajayi; the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and its candidate, Kolawole Ogunfeyimi; and African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its candidate, Mr Adeyemi Nejo.

The respondents are: APC, Aiyedatiwa and his running mate, Mr Olayide Adelami; and INEC.

Mr Ishaka Dikko and Bankole Akomolafe, the PDP’s counsel, argued that the election was marred by substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act and asked the tribunal to void Aiyedatiwa’s certificate of return.

On the other hand, Aiyedatiwa, his deputy, Adelami and the INEC enjoined the tribunal to dismiss the petitions.

The tribunal, however, said that the allegation of vote buying could not be substantiated and supported with facts.

It added that the petitions lacked merit that could stand as a fact to nullify the election’s outcome as being asked by the petitioners.

The AA, through its National Chairman, Mr Adekunle Omoaje, also petitioned the tribunal, asserting that Aiyedatiwa’s declaration as the winner was illegal and void due to non-compliance with the provision of Electoral Act and the 1999 Constitution.

Omoaje claimed that the party was not permitted to nominate its legitimate governorship candidate, alleging that INEC imposed Akinnuli Omolere as the party’s candidate.

On AA alleged exclusion of its candidate from the ballot paper on the election day, the panel held that the party lacked locus standi to initiate the petition because the party had no candidate in the said election.

According to the panel, AA should have instituted a case at a high court to mandate INEC to submit its alleged rightful candidate for the election instead of bringing the matter to the tribunal which has no jurisdiction on pre-election matter.

Also on APM’s allegation of evidence corrupt practices during the election, the panel struck out the petition, saying it was inconsequential because there were no material facts to support the claim.

The tribunal also said that SDP failed to prove its allegations of over voting and corrupt practices by INEC in favour of APC.

It added that there was nothing shown by SDP and its candidate to prove that there was over voting nor was able to tender evidence that there was falsification of the election’s result as claimed in its petition.

The tribunal stated that elections are not determined by public opinion or propaganda, and described the petitions as a waste of the tribunal’s time and taxpayers’ money, noting that SDP and its candidate failed to provide evidence for any of the relief sought.

The tribunal further stated that the petitions instituted by ADC and its candidate were still still-born and dead on arrival because the petitioners could not link a single polling unit to the alleged electoral malpractices.

It also unanimously delivered its judgment on the petitions filed by PDP and its governorship candidate, Agboola Ajayi.

PDP submitted its petition on three grounds of allegation of fake academic qualifications of deputy governor, Olayide Adelami, non compliance with electoral laws by INEC and that Aiyedatiwa did not score the lawful counts of votes during the election.

The tribunal said that PDP presented 22 witnesses during the proceedings of the tribunal’s sittings.

It, therefore, dismissed allegation of non academic qualification levelled against the deputy governor since it was a pre-election matter which had been decided by apex court, stating that “the petition should not have been filed at all.”

The tribunal noted that the statistics and forensic expert’s evidence brought by PDP was faulty because the said expert could not give any identification and evidence to substantiate his expertise, subsequently, allegation of non compliance with the Electoral Act was dismissed.

It said that the petitioners’ documents presented as their evidence could not be verified by the tribunal and that the petitioners could not also tender evidence of allegation of over voting during the election.

The three-member panel, therefore, dismissed all the petitions for lack of merit.

Tribunal’s verdict: You can’t steal mandate through back door – Aiyedatiwa

Meanwhile, Governor Aiyedatiwa has reacted to the judgment of the Election Petition Tribunal that upheld his victory in the Nov. 16, 2024 governorship election.

Aiyedatiwa, who spoke to journalists after the judgment, said that some political parties thought they could steal his mandate through the back door.

“Some political parties thought that they can steal the mandate through the back door, but today, the judiciary has confirmed the decision of the majority of indigenes and residents of Ondo State.

“So, I am delighted and happy; I, myself, my deputy and the chairman of our happy, we are grateful to God,” he said.

The governor, therefore, extended the hand of fellowship to oppositions in the state, stating that their ideas would contribute to the development of the state.

  • Flooding: Ondo govt sends strong warning to residents

Flooding: Ondo govt sends strong warning to residents

The Ondo State Government on Wednesday urged its residents to be actively involved in the sanitation of the environment to mitigate the effects of flooding in the state.

Dr Olayide Adelami, Deputy Governor of the state, gave the advice in Akure at the flag off of 2025 Flood National Preparedness and Response Campaign (NPRC) organised by National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

The programme, in collaboration with Ondo State Emergency Management Agency (ODSEMA), has the theme “Strengthening Resilience, Enhancing Preparedness and Response”.

Adelami, represented by Dr Kola Falohun, the Deputy Chief of Staff, said the poor sanitation of the environment had led to choked drainages, which in turn, helped the effects of flooding.

“We have killed the spirit of sanitation. We rarely see people doing environmental sanitation. If we don’t sanitise the environment, then the drainages get choked up.

“When you have a lot of other challenges, not only water, It could be as a result of the way the environment is contaminated by man.

“Let us mitigate rather than arrest the situation when it starts. Key into what the government is doing. The communities should be involved,” he said.

Earlier, Mrs Zubaida Umar, Director-General, NEMA, said the agency, earlier, organised a two-day technical meeting to analyse the disaster risk management of Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) and Annual Flood Outlook (AFO)

Umar, represented by Mr Fred Anusim, Deputy Director, Planning Research and Forecasting, NEMA, said the meeting was part of the agency’s efforts at coordinating preparedness and response to flood incidents in Nigeria and Ondo State în particular.

According to her, one of the recommendations of that meeting is to intensify the physical downscaling of the early warning alerts and to enhance preparedness and response strategy in all the states of Nigeria.

“That is the essence why this team from NEMA Abuja is here today. I appreciate Nigeria Meteorological Services (NiMet), through their SCP, and the Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA) on their AFO for each climatic year.

“With the use of a weather satellite surveillance and flood risk modeling software, they have been able to forecast at 90 per cent accuracy of rainfall patterns in the country for all Local Government Areas (LGAs).

“They have also determined areas that are of high risk probability of being flooded.

“NEMA, working with NiMet and NIHSA tools, has been able to analyse and produce Disaster Risk Management implications of the forecast for Agriculture, Health, infrastructure, Transportation and Water resources management.

“This has been deployed further to sensitise communities, LGA’s and states that are likely to be impacted by flooding on how to act and live with it when it eventually happens,” she said.

Also, Dr Evans Ugoh Deputy Director, Disaster Risk Reduction, NEMA, said disaster management had four phases: mitigation/prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.

“Mitigation and prevention has to do with activities aimed at preventing disaster occurrence and proactive measures put in place to reduce the impacts, if it eventually occurs.

“Preparedness has to do with activities taken in advance to ensure effective response to disaster occurrence, eg early warning systems, capacity building, public enlightenment, risk assessment and mapping, etc.

“We are here primarily for enlightenment on mitigation, prevention and preparedness actions by relevant stakeholders, state, local government, and communities”, he said.

5 illegal miners arrested in Ondo

The Ondo State Government has arrested five suspected illegal sand miners at Ilu-Agbo in Ese-Local Government Area of the State.

Mrs Folawe Sipasi-Aluko, Senior Special Assistant on Mining to Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, made this known in a statement on Saturday in Okitipupa.

The suspected illegal miners are: David Ayara, David Monday, Bonima Boluwatife, Stanley Odoh and Wisdom Nomiye.

Sipasi-Aluko led the operation in collaboration of the Federal Mines Task Force and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Other officials from the State Ministry of Mineral and Energy, State Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture and Afforestation were involved in the operation.

Also, involved in the operation were the Department of State Security (DSS) and Ondo State Security Network (Amotekun) led by one Mr Joseph Ebisanmi, among others.

Sipasi-Aluko said several warnings issued by the government in the past, fell on the deaf ears of the miners in the area, explaining that Gov.  Aiyedatiwa has zero tolerance for illegal mining activities.

She declared that companies involved in sand mining must legalise their operations by obtaining an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) certificate or an Environmental Management Plan (EMP).

She added that the effects of illegal mining, such as flooding, are deadly, and emphasised that the government will not stand idly by while citizens suffer as the rainy season intensifies.

“It is high time we put an end to illegal mining in Ondo state, particularly sand mining at Ilu-Agbo along River Oluwa in Ese-Odo.

“The effects on the community are extremely dangerous and the state government. Ondo state have zero tolerance for illegal mining.

“All companies operating illegally must obtain their EIA certificate or Environmental Management Plan.

“We aim to eradicate flooding from this community as Mr Governor is committed to ensuring the safety of our people,” she said.

Mr Isaac Ojo, the Director of Environmental Impact Assessment, stated that miners would be given instructions during the EIA process to ensure that their activities do not harm the community.

“They will be guided on where to place their machines, loading points and how to channel waste properly. Without an EIA certificate, there is a significant risk of future harm,” he said.

Chief Taiwo Abisagbo, a community leader in Igbobini also commended the government over the operation and the bold step to moderate activities of illegal miners on waterways across the state.

He said illegal sand mining in the area had caused significant damage to the community, particularly in agriculture, housing and health.

He, however, reiterated the readiness of the leadership of the community to continue to collaborate with the office of the senior special assistant to the governor on mining to ensure success.

  • BEDC rejects alleged takeover plot by Ondo govt

BEDC rejects alleged takeover plot by Ondo govt

The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and its subsidiary, BEDC Electricity Ondo Limited (BEOL), have strongly condemned an alleged plan by the Ondo State Government to assume control of electricity distribution operations in the state.

The condemnation was issued in a statement responding to the announcement by the Special Assistant to the Ondo State Governor on Power, describing the state government’s move as illegal, provocative, and disruptive to ongoing partnerships.

BEDC’s statement was released on Friday in Benin by its Chief Revenue Cycle Manager, Mr Collins Igwe.

According to Igwe, while the Electricity Act 2023 empowers states to regulate their electricity markets, it does not authorise them to unilaterally take over distribution operations.

BEDC stated that any such move would violate the joint communiqué reached after a strategic meeting between BEDC/BEOL and the Ondo state government aimed at addressing power challenges.

“Any such move undermines the spirit of collaboration and mutual understanding agreed upon to resolve electricity issues in the state.

“We have a legal mandate to operate in Ondo. This attempted encroachment is unacceptable,” Igwe said.

He emphasised that the power supply challenges in Ondo were part of broader national issues, and reiterated BEDC’s commitment—through BEOL—to implementing long-term, sustainable solutions.

“We are open to partnerships, but any approach must respect due legal processes and the agreements made in good faith,” he added.

Igwe also explained that the jointly signed communiqué established a clear roadmap for collaborative solutions.

He said it recommended the creation of a power supply committee to address electricity access in underserved and unserved communities through a mutually agreed framework.

The company warned that any unilateral action or interference in its operations would constitute a breach of agreement and could disrupt electricity distribution services across the state.

“The company reaffirmed that it remains the duly licensed operator in Ondo and will protect its infrastructure in line with Nigerian laws and regulatory standards.

“We call on those currently attempting to interfere with our infrastructure to desist immediately to avoid legal consequences,” the statement said.

Igwe further urged the public to disregard the controversial publication, describing it as misleading, unauthorised, and detrimental to ongoing collaborative efforts.

He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering improved electricity services in Ondo state, prioritising transparency, legal compliance, and community engagement.

“We remain focused on constructive dialogue with all stakeholders to ensure sustained progress and stability in Ondo state’s power sector,” Igwe said.

  • Police arrest 46 suspects over Ondo cult clash

Police arrest 46 suspects over Ondo cult clash

The Police Command in Ondo State has arrested 46 suspects following a clash between rival cult groups that claimed five lives in Ondo town, Ondo West Local Government Area of the state.

DSP Olushola Ayanlade, the command’s spokesperson made the disclosure in an interview with NAN on Thursday in Akure.

The cult clash occurred on Monday evening and lasted till Tuesday, with many people injured during the crisis.

Ayanlade, who said that efforts were ongoing to arrest others, explained that the suspects were arrested with firearms and ammunition in their hideouts in the town.

“We want the people of Ondo town and Ondo State generally to remain law abiding and cooperate with the police.

“We will not rest until we arrest the remaining people that responsible for the crisis,” Ayanlade said.

  • Police open up on kidnapping of Afenifere youth leader

Police open up on kidnapping of Afenifere youth leader

The Police Command in Ondo State has alleged that the Afenifere Youth Council President, Mr Eniola Ojajuni, ignored invitations from the command for a debriefing after he was released by his abductors.

DSP Olushola Ayanlade, the command’s spokesperson made this known in a statement on Tuesday following an allegation by Ojajuni that the police failed to invite him after his release from the kidnappers’ den.

Ayanlade stated that contrary to Ojajuni’s claim, he was neither kidnapped nor released within Ondo State.

He explained that the command made efforts by collaborating with other security agencies, to facilitate his safe return, “even in the face of numerous inconsistencies” in his statements.

“These inconsistencies were directly contradicted by accounts provided by his wife and brothers, all of whom were contacted during the period of his supposed abduction.

“Following his release, Mr Ojajuni has persistently ignored multiple invitations from the Ondo State Police Command for a formal debrief.

“This debrief could have significantly aided ongoing investigations, especially given the unusual nature of the claims surrounding his case.

“To be clear, the alleged abduction of Mr Eniola Ojajuni remains shrouded in mystery, marked by conflicting narratives and actions inconsistent with the known modus operandi of kidnapping syndicates in the state,” he said.

Ayanlade explained that a video released by his purported abductors during his alleged captivity was at odds with the behaviour of any such groups previously investigated or arrested.

“Intelligence gathered from past kidnapping cases and confessions by arrested suspects indicate that many of these criminals do not even own smartphones, let alone record or disseminate footage of their victims.

“This unusual detail raises further questions and could potentially compromise legitimate efforts to trace and apprehend actual criminals,” he said.

He, therefore, urged the public, especially individuals with credible evidence or knowledge of criminal activities, to come forward and assist the police in the pursuit of justice.

Ayanlade, who said that the Nigeria Police Force was a professional law enforcement body committed to upholding justice without fear or favour, said anyone found culpable regardless of social status would face the full weight of the law.

“Security is a collective responsibility. We appeal to all residents of Ondo State to continue to support the police and other security agencies as we intensify our efforts to protect lives and property,” he said.

Ayanlade said that the men of the command were already tracking the kidnappers in the bushes, and were working with the community to rescue the victim.

“I can confirm to you that there is an issue of kidnapping but I can not confirm the number of the victims for now,” the PPRO said.
