Governor, dignitaries honour late Ondo SSG

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, alongside other dignitaries, attended the Service of Songs and Christian wake on Friday, held in honour of the late Temitayo Oluwatuyi.

The event was part of the activities organised ahead of Oluwatuyi’s burial programme.

Aiyedatiwa, paying tribute to the late Secretary to the State Government, acknowledged his remarkable contributions to the political and administrative landscapes of Ondo State.

He described Oluwatuyi as a seasoned, generous, and diligent statesman whose calmness and wealth of experience were invaluable.

“He was a selfless leader who dedicated his life to public service, championing various interests and contributing immensely to the state’s growth and development,” Aiyedatiwa said.

The service began with a Bible reading by the deceased’s daughter, Mrs Jumoke Adeola, from Ecclesiastes 3:1-11, a passage reflecting on life’s seasons and divine timing.

Pastor James Onagwa, delivering words of encouragement from Matthew 24:35, titled ‘Where Will Christ Find You?’, emphasised life’s brevity and the need to prepare for eternity.

In his tribute, Sen. Adeniyi Adegbonmire, representing Ondo Central Senatorial District, described Oluwatuyi’s passing as a significant loss to the Akure community.

Adegbonmire highlighted the deceased’s contributions and exemplary service.

Reflecting on her father’s legacy, Mrs Jumoke Adeola described him as a compassionate man and a cheerful giver who instilled in his children the value of selfless generosity.

Oluwatuyi’s final rites will take place on Saturday.

The event was attended by top government officials and political figures, including Ondo State’s Deputy Governor, Dr Olayide Adelami, and Speaker of the House of Assembly, Mr Olamide Oladiji.

Farmer to spend months in prison for cutting colleague’s hand

A Chief Magistrates Court in Okitipupa, Ondo State, on Thursday, sentenced a farmer, Abu Abubakar, to six months imprisonment for  cutting the hand of one, Ibrahim Tukur, with cutlass.

The Magistrate, Mr Olarenwaju Adelegan, convicted and sentenced Abubakar without giving him an option of fine.

Adelegan said that the convict, 25, should serve his term at the Okitipupa Correctional Centre.

The convict, whose address was not given, had pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of assault.

Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, ASP Zedekiah Orogbemi had told the court that the convict committed the offence on Jan. 30, at 8.00 a.m. at Sabo in Okitipupa, Okitipupa magisterial district.

Orogbemi said that the convict had an altercation with the complainant, which degenerated and the former rushed to grab a machete and brought it down on the latter’s right hand that was raised to ward off the blow.

The prosecutor said that Tukur sustained severe injuries on the hand and body as a result of the assault.
He said that the offence was contravened Section 355 of the Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

  • Nurses, midwives withdraw services in Ondo

Nurses, midwives withdraw services in Ondo

Nurses in Ondo State have declared an indefinite strike from Friday over what they refered to as improper remuneration and poor welfare.

Mr Felix Orobode, the state Chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), made this known on Thursday at a news conference in Akure.

Orobode said that the strike would be fully implemented in all state-owned health institutions.

According to him, it is unfortunate that the state government has been insensitive to demands of the association since 2023.

“Since 2023, various engagements have been held with the government where we tabled our demands, but none of them were properly addressed.

“These demands include lateral conversion (point to point) for our nurses with first degree certificate, and uniform allowance for nurses, as captured in the public service rule.

“We also demanded payment of arrears of promotion and hazard allowances, conducive environment in our health facilities with provision of adequate hospital equipment to work with.

“There was also the proper placement/remuneration of our nurses and midwives.

“Even with numerous rounds of negotiation, unwavering patience and significant concessions made by our association, the government has refused to honour it’s commitment.

“Rather, one profession in the health sector was being favoured over others with the adjustment of their salary structure in July 2024,” he said.

The chairman also said the adjustment of the association’s members remuneration was marred with irregularities, following the announcement of N73,000 as the minimum wage in the state,

“We have since rejected this adjustment. This necessitated another round of negotiations, where a consensus was reached to have another table with implementation from January 2025 salary.

“To our dismay, the January salary was paid with the old salary table, which was never part of our agreement.

“Based on this unhealthy development, an emergency State Executive Council (SEC) meeting was summoned today.

“After reviewing our activities so far, we concluded that the government has taken us for a ride.

“We, therefore, resolved to direct all nurses and midwives under the employment of Ondo State to withdraw their services indefinitely with effect from 12:00am on Friday, Jan.31.

“This will be the status quo until our demands are met by the government,” he said.

Orobode also said that the government’s refusal to honour the association’s demands had left the association with no other option than to “down tools”.

He stated that nurses and midwives could no longer endure the financial and professional neglect that had characterised their relationship with the government.

Orobode, who appealed to all stakeholders and members of public to understand and support the course of the association, added that the action was in the best interest of the healthcare delivery in the state.

Newly elected Ondo LG chairmen receive Certificates of Return

The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) on Monday presented Certificates of Return to the 18 elected chairmen and vice-chairmen of the Local Government Chairmanship Election held on Jan.18, 2025.

The commission on Sunday declared All Progressive Congress (APC) as winner in all the 18 Local Governments (LG)’s of Ondo State.

Dr Joseph Aremo, ODIEC Chairman, who presented the certificates to the chairmen and their vices at the commission in Akure, said that it was to confirm their victory in the election.

Aremo said that the success of the concluded election demonstrated the commitment of the electorate to deepening democracy and strengthening governance at the grassroots level.

“You are here today because God has destined you to be, and what a man will be on this earth is already written by Almighty God.

“But as far as the constitution recognising the existence of local government under democratic elected personnel, there is a law guiding them.

“All the chairmen-elect need to live and justify the mandate freely given to them by the people at the grassroots.

“Moreover, they all also, need to use the available resources at the local government judiciously and ensure the people-oriented projects are brought to bear.

“Because people have been yearning for democracy at the grassroots for purposeful leadership, then there is the need for them to key into it to justify the confidence reposed in them,” he said.

Aremo, however, reiterated the commission’s commitment to continue the conduct of free, fair, credible and transparent elections in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the chairmen-elect, Dr Gbenga Fasua, the Chairman-elect for Akure South Local Government, expressed gratitude to the people for their overwhelming support. He pledged to deliver on their campaign promises.

  • SDP calls for cancellation of Ondo LG election

SDP calls for cancellation of Ondo LG election

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State has called for the immediate cancellation of the Saturday’s Local Government elections in the state.

Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) had conducted elections into the chairmanship and councillorship seats in all the 18 local government areas of the state.

The commission on Sunday announced that the All Progressives Congress (APC) won all the chairmanship and councillorship positions, defeating other 12 political parties that participated in the elections.

The state Chairman of SDP, Mr Ebenezer Akinbuli, at a news conference on Monday in Akure, described the conduct of the elections as “a show of shame, concocted by the ruling APC-led government under Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa.”

Akinbuli said the council polls were marred with widespread irregularities, harassment and intimidation by the APC party agents.

“We want to condemn the ‘selection’ that took place in Ondo State on Saturday. There was no election in the state as far as we are concerned because what happened was a pure show of shame, and that is why we are calling for the immediate cancellation of the polls.

“Also, we are calling for the removal or honourable resignation of the State Chairman of ODIEC, Mr Joseph Aremo. We’ve engaged him and he assured us, as a political party, that he was going to be a fair umpire, but it’s unfortunate that he didn’t do as promised.

“We call for the cancellation of the polls because all the polling units across the 18 local governments were floored with all manner of irregularities and Electoral Officers were not given the sheets to write the results of the elections,” he said.

Akinbuli noted that there was no adherence to the rules guiding the elections by ODIEC.

“The just concluded local government election was a total fraud, the councillorship and chairmanship candidates were mandated to pay tax heavily to the account of the state government for the election, not knowing that they will use the money to defraud us.

“We are going to file a petition personally against the ODIEC Chairman, Mr Joseph Aremo, for his involvement in this election and we are also going to challenge the outcome of the election,” he said.

Aremo said that the results for Owo LGA and Ondo West LGA, which was cancelled and rescheduled for Sunday, due to wrong logo of one of the parties on the ballot papers would be announced later.

“For PDP to to pull out, that is cowardice. They participated in the whole process. ODIEC released the time table for the election on time, I don’t know the reason for that (withdrawal).

“Maybe the fear of losing. Every election has its own logistics and other political parties are participating. So, whatever reason that made them withdraw, I am not privy to that,” he said.

    Ondo residents rate LG poll

Meanwhile, some residents of Okitipupa in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, have attributed lack of confidence in the electoral process for the apathy to Saturday’s local government election in Ondo State.

It was that many residents did not come out to cast their votes at the polling centres across the state. It was also observed that some residents went about their normal businesses while others stayed indoors in parts of the state.

Some private and commercial vehicles, as well as motorcycles were seen on the roads while a few traders opened their shops to customers.

In a separate interviews with NAN, on Saturday in Okitipupa, some of the residents said that their votes were not likely to change anything.

They called on the government to find lasting solution to the poor economy for citizens to enjoy the dividends of democracy.

A commercial driver at the Okitipupa New Garage, who simply gave his name as Segun, told NAN that he had lost confidence in the electoral process and that was why he did not bother to go and vote.

“What have we gained from all the elections we have been participating in?  Nothing but untold hardship and hunger. I no longer have interest in the process,” he said.

Mr Charles Ikuedowo, a commercial motorcyclist, said that there was serious hunger in the country and the only way out now was to be dedicated to work in order to feed the family,” he said.

Also, Madam Felicia Akingbaso, a beverage vendor, said that she considered participation in the election a waste of time.

According to her, politicians seeking votes of the electorate make promises when campaigning, but after their victory disappear.

She urged the government to give priority to residents’ welfare for them to enjoy dividends of democracy.

A charcoal dealer who simply gave her name as Yetunde, said that going to the polling  centre to  vote was a waste of time.
