The Speaker of Ondo State House of Assembly, Mr Bamidele Oleyelogun, on Friday dissolved the assembly, following the expiration of its four-year tenure.

In a valedictory speech, Oleyelogun applauded his colleagues and members of staff of the assembly for their loyalty and support.

He, however, became emotional and suddenly broke down in tears, while expressing his appreciation to God.

He said that the dissolution was in line with Section 105 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

In an emotion-laden voice, Oloyelogun thanked God that no member of the assembly lost their lives since the inception of the ninth assembly in June 2019.

He said that the oneness, unity, and togetherness exhibited by the lawmakers contributed to the success recorded by the assembly under his leadership.

He extended the assembly’s appreciation to Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu “for giving the legislative arm the enabling environment to thrive for the betterment of the state”.

According to him, the assembly was successful because it was able to surmount all the challenges and contributed immensely to the growth and infrastructure development of the state.

He appealed to those who felt aggrieved and offended by his actions to forgive him, saying that he bore no grudges against anybody.

Oleyelogun advised the incoming 10th assembly to build on the achievements of his leadership.

Some lawmakers that also spoke said that the house afforded them the platform to contribute their own quota to the development of the state.

Mr Sunday Olajide (APC), who represented Akure South Constituency 2, said that he delivered the dividend of democracy to his constituency within his ability.

Olajide also said that he had gained more knowledge in the course of his legislative duties.

Similarly, Mr Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi (APC), who represented Owo Constituency 1, thanked his constituents for the confidence they reposed in him to serve them.

Ogunmolasuyi said he made a lot of sacrifice to add value to his constituency and better the lot of the people and state at large.

He described Oleyelogun as a father and a good leader, saying that he provided a level playing field for all the lawmakers to function.

Ogunmolasuyi, who looked excited during the session, moved the motion for the assembly’s dissolution.

The motion was seconded by Mr Gbenga Omole, who represented Akoko South-West constituency.

  • How I hit Guinness World Record in Akure – Ezekiel explains

How I hit Guinness World Record in Akure – Ezekiel explains

A Guinness World Record holder in most skips on one leg, Gbenga Ezekiel has explained how he challenged the record held by Rasel Islam from Bangladesh.

He attributed his feat to Coach Chibuisi Ukandu, who encouraged him to go for the contest.

Gbenga Ezekiel successfully erased Bangladesh’s Rasel Islam’s record of 262 skips in one minute on one foot to set a new Guinness World Record with 265 skips.

The 16-year-old pupil of Ijapo High School in Akure told NAN on Wednesday in Akure that not long after he took to skipping that his coach told him that he could break the record.

He said it was during the secondary school interschool competition that his coach identified his talent and started training him and promised to help him apply for the Guinness World record.

“When I was training, the coach said I was close to the Guinness World Record with my performance and that I could do it, and when I did it, he helped me apply and I did it and we achieved it,” the Senior Secondary School student said.

Ezekiel said that he normally skips for fun at the back of the class and for recreational purposes until a senior informed him of an interschool skipping competition where the coach discovered him.

He expressed delight to have broken the record thereby bringing glory to the country.

“One day when we were skipping at the back of our classrooms, one of the senior perfects came and informed us that there would be interschool rope skipping at the stadium and we went for training.

“They allowed me to participate in one event, in the training and I skipped and that day my coach said I can beat the Guinness World Record and I did,” he said.

Ezekiel said he loved the sport and appealed to the country’s sports authorities to recognise skipping rope as a competitive sport in Nigeria and organise competitions.

“I feel happy that I am the first Ondo State-born athlete to achieve the feat since its creation in 1976,” he said.

Also, One of his classmates, Precious Ayodele, said Ezekiel was very nice and a friend of everybody in the class.

Ayodele said when the class heard about the record he had broken, everyone was happy for him and this has also encouraged them to take up skipping too.

The Vice Principal of Ijapo High School, Mrs. Bukola Faola, said she was happy because the boy had brought the school to the limelight in a positive way, saying,” we all applaud the boy for the record set.”

Also, the Coach of Ondo State Rope Skipping, Chibuisi Ukandu, said he was happy that Ezekiel was the first Ondo State-born athlete, first Nigerian, and First African rope skipper to achieve such record.

Ukandu said the boy did not do well during the inter-school rope skipping championship but had the desire to improve and always coming back to training after school hours demanding to be trained more.

According to the coach, after the application, he got approval from Guinness and his approval date was given as Oct. 31, 2022.

Ukandu said all the recordings and evidence were sent for approval and a mail was thereafter received that Ezekiel had actually broken the record.

  • Ondo traditional rulers raise alarm over influx of herdsmen

Ondo traditional rulers raise alarm over influx of herdsmen

Traditional rulers in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State have raised the alarm over the influx of suspected herdsmen into communities in the area.

The traditional rulers, in a communique issued at the end of the stakeholders’ meeting on Sunday in Ute, said the activities of the herdsmen had been hindering preparation for the planting season in the area.

The traditional rulers are; Olute of Ute, Oba Oluwole Akinrongbe; Olumoru of Imoru, Oba Rotimi Obamuwagun; Arujale Ojima of Okeluse, Oba Oloyede Akinghare and Odibiado of Ijagba, Oba Andrew Okioya.

The traditional rulers, who sent a Save our Soul (SOS) to Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu, said the situation had led to the spike in attacks on farmers, kidnapping, rape and destruction of farmlands in the area.

They noted that the development had attendant implications on food security not only in agrarian communities in the council, but also in the entire state.

They said that farmers who were supposed to mobilise for the new farming season had been driven from farms by armed miscreants who had been mobilising themselves to the area on a daily basis.

The royal fathers, therefore, called on the state government, security agencies to take urgent steps to stem the dangerous tide.

They noted that rate of unprovoked attacks on towns, villages and settlements in the area was becoming “vey scary and highly embarrassing.”

The traditional rulers, who commended the state governor, the Police, Amotekun Corps and other security agencies for tackling insecurity in the state, called for urgent steps to restore peace to the affected communities.

“We passionately appeal that more definite and significant efforts be put in place to ensure more holistic approach to this unending security problems.

“The emerging insecurity in the area, if not tackled with increased efforts, can result in famine in the state. We advise residents of the communities to be extra vigilant and report suspected movement and cases to the security agencies.

“The rate, level and degree of unprovoked attacks on towns, villages and settlements in the southern part of Ose Local Government Area are very scary and highly embarrassing,” they said.

According to them, the incessant attacks usually leave in its wake massive destruction of lives, property, rape of married women, teenagers, underage, kidnaping and murder in all the camps, villages, settlements and suburbs like Arimogija.

The traditional rulers said: “These perpetrators destroyed hectares of plantations of plantains, cassava, yams etc at will, harvest such crops and feed their animals with them.

“They perpetrate such atrocities, on the alleged belief that their cows usually give birth to two or three of their kinds at once when they are fed with this crops.

“At regular intervals, they wilfully set fires on cocoa and other farmlands thereby causing poverty, hardship, hunger, sorrow and extreme pains to our people.

“Our entire landscape is agrarian, therefore, our people are basically small and medium scale farmers hence, their livelihood depends on these efforts, now totally annihilated.

“Now, our people live in constant fears and can no longer access their farmlands and places of business because the bandits, terrorists and armed herders have forcefully occupied and taken over our farmlands and forests.”

The royal fathers, however, called for the deployment of more security personnel to the area due to its strategic position and establishment of Forward Operational Base in the area.

The traditional rulers demanded for “creation of standard police divisions, provisions of effective patrol units and proper clearing of the road verges in the area to ensure clear visibility.

“Deployment of a unit of Mobile Police men with armed Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), deployment of technology to assist in the surveillance of ground forces and urgent provision of relief materials and economic empowerment for the displaced persons to prevent them from going into crimes.”

Fire guts petrol filling station in Akure

An Optimal Filling Station located on Aule Road in Akure, the Ondo State  Capital caught fire on Monday.

The fire, which destroyed the administrative block of the filling station and dispensing pumps, was put out by some fire service personnel.

Speaking on the fire, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Fire Service in the state, Mr. Ayodele Ajulo,  attributed it to the heat in the underground tank.

Ajulo advised filling stations operators to be extremely careful while offloading fuel from tankers into their underground tanks, especially during this period of extreme heat.

” We always tell people to be extremely cautious during this period. The hot weather makes it easy for fire to erupt from anything inflammable.

“It is important for people, especially filling station operators, to take all necessary precautions and also have enough fire extinguishers around in case of any emergency,” he said.

He commended the concerned residents that cooperated with fire fighters to quench the inferno, thanking God that no life was lost.

Also, Mr Abiodun Adelekun, a resident in the area,   said that some youths in the araea had to come out en masse to ensure that the fire was put out to prevent it from spreading to other buildings within the vicinity.

“The fire started when the tanker was offloading its content into the underground tanks. All we heard was a bang and we saw fire everywhere coming out of the tanker.

“We came out to assist the fire fighters to save our houses,” he said.

He urged the state government to discourage having petrol stations in clustered areas, adding that it was not the best.

“If not for the fire service today and the support of youths from this area, the fire would have escalated beyond control,” he said.

An elder who has a shop beside the filling station, Mr. Asabari Elelubo, said the loud noise he heard when the fire started sent shivers down his spine.

“When I heard the loud noise, I nearly fainted. I had to first run to safety. The panic from the fire which caught my shop seven months ago is still in me and it made this more frightening.

“I am glad the fire service and the youth were able to contain it before it extended to surrounding houses,” he said.

300-level student of FUTA allegedly commits suicide

Mr Olona Oluwapelumi, a third-year student of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has allegedly committed suicide at his off-campus lodge in Akure.

Joseph, who was in FUTA’s Department of Industrial Design, allegedly took his life by hanging, for reasons suspected to be connected to depression and financial constraint.

It was learnt that upon entry, the friends discovered that the body of the student, popularly known as “Black”, was hanging in the room.

Some of his neighbours, who did not want their names to be mentioned, said that Joseph was a jovial and friendly man, who never entered into arguments or fought with any neighbour.

One of the neighbours said that it was discovered that the Facebook page of the deceased, who was an entrepreneur and made designer wears with the brand name “Tart Angle”, contained a post about suicide.

According to him, several of the deceased’s posts also contained messages seeking financial help to enable him to run his business.

“On October 8, 2022, his Facebook post read, “Suicide kinda answers all, it’s the only thing that listens and trusts you when you left all to yourself. Good night and goodbye,” the neighbour said.

Meanwhile, FUTA authorities have yet to make an official statement on the student’s death.

The spokesperson of the police command in Ondo, SP Funmi Odunlami-Omisanya, said that the corpse of the student had been deposited at a mortuary while investigation into the death would soon start.
