    Gunmen kidnap school principal, teachers in Ondo

    Some gunmen allegedly abducted no fewer than five persons along Auga-Ise Road in Akoko East Local Government Area of Ondo State on Thursday evening.

    The victims include, the principal of the Auga Community Grammar School , Joshua Adeyemi; the Vice Principal, Ifedayo Yesufu; a teacher of the school, Mrs Oloyede Bukola; as well as two NPower teachers in the school; Adagunodo Funmilayo and Mrs Blessing Okeke.

    According to a source, the five victims were in Toyota Corolla car with registration no LSD 297 AH when the hoodlums accosted them on the road and abducted them into the forest .

    However, it was gathered that one of the victims, Blessing Okeke, who was pregnant was released following her condition but the rest were still in the custody of the bandits.

    The wife of the kidnapped school principal, Hellen Adeyemi, said it was Okeke that broke the news to her saying her husband’s vehicle was abandoned on the spot where they were kidnapped.

    Adeyemi, as at the time of filing this report, said the kidnapers had not contacted the family on ransom.

    Confirming the incident, the Divisional Police Officer for Ikare Division, Oladutoye Akinwande disclosed that police had removed the abandoned car
    while his men had commenced combing of the forest to apprend the criminals and free the victims.

    Woman, policeman kill two commercial motorcyclists, passenger in Ondo

    There was pandemonium in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Wednesday after three persons were mistakenly killed by a woman and policeman.

    According to reports, those who died in the tragic incident were two commercial motorcycle riders and a passenger.

    According to witnesses, tragedy struck when a bus said to have been driven by a woman knocked down and killed a commercial motorcycle rider.

    This resulted in a protest by other commercial motorcycle riders who blocked the major road, leading to a gridlock in the area.

    In the process, the angry motorcycle riders were alleged to have made an attempt to mob the woman who knocked down their colleague.

    They were, however, stopped by a yet-to-be-identified policeman attached to a filling station not far from where the accident occurred.

    But the situation degenerated when the security operative mistakenly killed another commercial motorcyclist and a passenger.

    He was said to have fired some gunshots into the air in a bid to escape from the mob who attacked him while attempting to rescue the woman, but the other two persons were accidentally hit.

    Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Funmilayo Odunlami confirmed the incident.

    According to her, the angry protesters later attacked the policeman who escaped from the scene with severe wounds.

    “It was a road accident in which a woman driving a car hit and killed a commercial motorcyclist. Then a crowd gathered at the scene and was trying to mob the woman,” said Odunlami.

    “The policeman then approached the scene to disperse the crowd and rescue the woman, but the angry crowd mobbed him. It was while he was trying to rescue himself that he shot into the air and incidentally, he misfired.” DSP Funmilayo Odunlami.

    The protesters had set a bonfire on the major highway before the arrival of a team of policemen attached to the Division A Police Headquarters in the city.

    The officers were able to pacify the protesters and douse the tension while normalcy was restored in the area.

    Six passengers burnt beyond recognition in Ondo accident

    Six persons were on Friday burnt to death in an accident that occurred at Ode Aye junction in Okitipupa Local Government Area.

    According to reports, the accident took place when a coaster bus and a J5 bus laden with substance suspected to be Ethanol collided.

    Witnesses said one of the vehicles attempted to overtake the other before the collision, which caused a spark that engulfed both vehicles.

    Passengers in the coastal bus belonging to Akure North Local Government Area were on their way to Okitipupa to attend a social function of one of the Directors of Odigbo Local government area.

    It was gathered that other victims that were seriously injured were rushed to the Prima hospital in Ore, Odigbo local government.

    Eyewitnesses said residents in the area tried to put off the fire but could not because of the ethanol loaded in the J5 vehicle.

    They said all the six persons were burnt beyond recognition.

    The remains of the victims have been deposited at a hospital in Ore.

    No fewer than 18 Northerners hidden in a trailer loaded with beans have been arrested by the personnel of the Ondo state security outfit codenamed Amotekun in Akure, the state capital.

    They claimed they came from Sokoto state and were trailed from Ilesa-Akure highway to Arakale road, in Akure metropolis by personnel of the security outfit.

    Parading them in Akure, Commander Ondo, Amotekun, Chief Adetunji Adeleye said ” Our men while on duty saw a suspected vehicle filled with bags of beans and we trailed the vehicle to Arakale.

    “They stopped along Arakale road and while searching the vehicle, we realized they were not carrying only beans, but 18 young men hid in the truck.

    “We asked them where they were going, but they did not know their destination as some of them said Sokoto while others said Jigawa State.

    “We took them to our office, gave them food to eat and called on the Head of Hausa community in Ondo State to take them back to their various destinations.

    “We felt they could constitute nuisance in the state as we are on the trail on 30 others because we were told they have come ahead of them.

    Speaking with newsmen, the leader, Hausa Community, Bala Umaru and Chairman, Miyetti Allah, Usman Bello said that they would soon be transported back to their various states.

    Bello thanked Governor Rotimi Akeredolu for providing the means of transporting them back to their state.

    Gunmen kidnap two siblings with their mothers’ car in Ondo

    Some men suspected to be kidnappers have abducted two little girls from their parents’ car in Akure, Ondo State capital.

    The incident occurred around 8:00 pm in Leo area of the city on Friday.

    According to reports, the gunmen attacked at the entrance to the house when the mother of the victims was opening the gate to drive into their compound.

    It was gathered that the kidnappers came in a car, snatched the car key from the mother of the kids, and fled with the car, abandoning their own car.

    The Public Relations Officer of Ondo State Police Command, DSP Funmilayo Odunlami confirmed the incident on Saturday.

    She noted that the case was reported to the police by the mother of the girls and officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Command have swung into action in a bid to rescue the kids and apprehend the kidnappers.

    Boat accidents kill four, injure 19 in Ondo

    Four persons have lost their lives while 19 others sustained injuries in boat accidents at different locations in Ilaje and Irele Local Government Areas of the Ondo State.

    The Public Relations Officer of Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Olufemi Omole, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday, in Akure, the state capital.

    According to the statement, the State Commandant of the Corps, Hameed Abodunrin, lamented that the victims died in the mishaps due to their failure to put on their life jackets.

    “A boat mishap at Ilaje Local Government Area claimed the life of one passenger leaving 15 others wounded as a result of over-speeding and refusal to use life jackets,” he said.

    In another incident, in Irele local government, a small boat collided with a bigger wooden boat on the high sea in the night, leading to the death of a passenger while four others were terribly injured.

    Abodunrin warned that henceforth, the command’s Marine Special Force would be on patrol to arrest boat passengers who refuse to use the life jackets.

    Gunmen kidnap father, two Children, one other family member in Ondo

    A gang of armed men on Sunday evening kidnapped four members of a family, including a father, his two children and another family member at Iju-Itaogbolu in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo state.

    The four victims were abducted while travelling from Ado Ekiti to Akure to attend a church programme when they ran to the roadblock mounted by the armed kidnappers.

    According to a source, the four victims who were travelling in a Space bus with three other passengers were unlucky as the three other passengers ran away immediately after the vehicle was stopped.

    He explained that the vehicle was stopped at a very bad spot very close to a popular Secondary school in the town saying the kidnappers forcefully dragged the father, his two children and the family member into the bush.

    He said the armed started shooting into the air to scare the residents of the area while they marched the victims into the forest.

    He, however, said men of Amotekun Corps in the state who got wind of the incident chased the hoodlums, but they were said to have escaped into Ekiti state forest with the victims.

    The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Funmilayo Odunlami, who could not confirm the abduction of the four family members said the information available is still sketchy, saying it was not too clear whether the incident happened in Ondo or Ekiti State territory.

    She, however, said the police from the command had swung into action to investigate the incident.

    One person has been confirmed dead following a building collapse in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

    The affected storey building located along Fanibi Junction within Akure metropolis collapsed while the occupants were fast asleep.

    A body of a woman was retrieved from the debris while members of her family were said to be trapped.

    According to reports residents within the area trooped to the scene to help in the rescue operation.

    Three herdsmen arrested in Ondo for open grazing; 180 cows seized

    ONDO State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, have arrested three herdsmen and seized their 180 cows for violating the state’s anti-open grazing law.
    Chairman of Ondo State Chapter of Amotekun Adetunji Adeleye revealed this to newsmen in Akure on Wednesday.

    He said operatives arrested the herdsmen and the cows at Oke Ala area of Akure, the state capital.

    “We confiscated about 180 cows and they are in our custody. We intend to release them to the owners after they have complied with the regulations as contained in the anti-open grazing law. We have also detained the three herders arrested with the cows. Their boss has come and we are dealing with the boss now,” he said.

    He noted that the agency would invoke the penalty of the law on the culprits, stipulating a minimum of N100,000 fine or three years’ imprisonment for defaulters.

    Adeleye also called on the leadership of Miyetti Allah to educate its members to comply with the state’s anti-open grazing law.

    “We have a number of herders here with us and we are making them comply with the enacted law, which stipulates penalty for defaulting herders. The position of the law is that if they choose to go to court, we will implement the law, which stipulates a minimum of N100,000 fine or three years’ imprisonment.

    “In most cases, you will see them pleading that such a thing will not happen again. We have also implored the leadership of Miyetti Allah to educate the members that the anti-open grazing law of Ondo State is fully in force.”

    The law banning open grazing in Ondo State was signed into law by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu in August.

    The purpose of the law, according to the state, was to stem the needless skirmishes, conflicts, and infractions between herders and farmers/ residents.

    The government noted that law was not targeted at any ethnic group but to engender a more cordial, mutually benefiting relationship amongst residents of the state irrespective of ethnicity, religion or creed.

    Meanwhile, the leadership of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders has vowed that its members will not comply with the laws irrespective of where they are enacted in the country.

    JUST IN: Gunmen kidnap 18 travellers in Ondo

    Daredevil gunmen have launched fresh attacks on travellers in Ondo State, kidnapping 18.

    According to reports, the victims were abducted on Wednesday night along the Ifira-Akoko/Idoani road in Akoko South East Local Government Area of the state.

    The abductors were said to have fired gunshots into the air to scare the passengers before taking them into a nearby forest.

    The Commander of Ondo State Security Outfit, codenamed Amotekun, Adetunji Adeleye, confirmed the incident on Thursday.

    Adeleye, however, said 14 of the victims have been rescued by men of the agency while efforts are ongoing to rescue the rest.

    Meanwhile, neither the Ondo State Government nor the Police Command have confirmed the attack.
