Ikoro said investigation has commenced into the incident.

Three other persons who were hit by strayed bullets were rushed to a hospital.

“So they later got the key of the vault and packed the money there but they were not satisfied with what they saw. They also opened the Automated Teller Machine but there was not enough money.

“That infuriated them and they shouted where is the money? It seems they didn’t get their target. After they took the money they went out angrily shooting to escape the scene.”

Amotekun raids night clubs, confiscates 40 vehicles in Ondo

The Ondo State Security Network, better known as Amotekun Corps, has impounded no fewer than 40 vehicles when its operatives raided some night clubs on Wednesday in Akure, the state capital.

The government has ordered that the nightclubs and bars should stop operating beyond midnight in the state, as part of the measures to curb the spate of armed robbery and order criminal activities that were often carried out in the night.

It was gathered that the raid was carried out at about 2am on Thursday.

Speaking on the development, the Special Adviser to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu on Security Matters, Alhaji Jimoh Dojumo, stated that despite the warning and directive of the government, some owners of various nightclubs and beer parlour joints had continued to flout the order.

He said, “We have to raid the night clubs and impound the vehicles because there is a subsisting order from Mr. Governor that the clubs should not operate at night for security reasons.

“We discovered that many criminal activities are perpetrated in the night, and during the interrogation of suspects, we discovered that these criminals always use clubs as shields. The level of hard drugs intake in the clubs is very high, and after taking the drugs, you see them misbehaving. All these we want to stop in this state.”

Similarly, when contacted, the Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, who confirmed the issue said the owners of the impounded vehicles had been showing up and were warned before the vehicles were released to them.

He said, “Some of the owners of the vehicles have come with the papers of the vehicles and they have been warned while the vehicles were released to them.”

Adeleye also noted that the Amotekun corps would not hesitate to deal with anyone caught going against the government’s order, saying the corps would not relent at enforcing the directive.

  • Ondo CJ blasts Gov Akeredolu over ‘childish display of adolescent behaviour’ to judgment against her probe

Ondo CJ blasts Gov Akeredolu over ‘childish display of adolescent behaviour’ to judgment against her probe

The Chief Judge of Ondo State, Justice Oluwatoyin O. Akeredolu has faulted the reaction by the state governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to the June 17 judgment stopping the state’s move to probe her.

In a statement issued on Saturday by her lawyer, Jibrin Okutepa (SAN), Justice Akeredolu described Ondo governor’s reaction, published in the media on Saturday, as infantile and contemptuous of the court.

“It is appalling to see a childish display of adolescent behaviour in the press statement issued on behalf of the government being led by a learned gentleman of the highest distinction at the Bar like this,” the statement said.

The Ondo State Commissioner for Information, Donald Ojogo had, in the statement, he issued on behalf of the state government and the governor, described the suit filed and prosecuted for the Chief Judge by Okutepa, and on which the June 17 judgment was given, as an ego trip in which the government refrained from participating.

Ondo CJ breaks silence on brother's predicament, three-year jail term without trial
Chief Judge of Ondo State, Justice Oluwatoyin O. Akeredolu

Part of the statement by Okutepa reads: “My attention has been drawn to a press statement said to have been issued by the Government of Ondo State on the judgment delivered by the Hon Mr Justice Eden Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court Abuja, in favour of the Hon the Chief Judge of Ondo State, Justice Oluwatoyin O. Akeredolu.

“It is sad and unfortunate that the government of Ondo State could authorised such contemptuous statement to be issued against a judgment that was delivered after all the parties were served with hearing notices on many occasions and the government led by an eminent senior Advocate did not deem it fit to respect the processes served on the government.

“As a lawyer to the Hon CJ in the matter, I consider the press statement as insulting to my person as it portrays me as accepting brief to take the matter that was purely academic to court for judicial determination.

“It is important to remind the Ondo State Government that the press statement is certainly an afterthought and face-saving measures to cover the plots that gave the Hon Chief Judge of Ondo State the cause of action which led his Lordship to brief me to go to court.

“It sad that the government of Ondo State can suffer memory loss of the reasons why the Hon CJ went to court. Let me repeat again that the press statement is an afterthought and as face-saving measures after the evil plot was denounced by proper judicial decision.

“In the first place, the Government Ondo State and parties involved were duly served the originating Processes and hearing notices.

“If the government has respect for judicial process as it claims, it should have appeared in court and inform the court that the issues and concerns raised were not true or not being pursued by the government. Ondo State government did not do so.

“Secondly, the Ondo State Government forgot that legal letters were done to the Governor, State House of Assembly and the Attorney General of Ondo State on the matter.

“We must set record straight. It is appalling to see a childish display of adolescent behaviour in the press statement issued on behalf of the government being led by learned gentleman of the highest distinction at the Bar like this.

“So sad. Perhaps, I will need to draw the attention of the Ondo State Government to the press statement issued by the Hon the Attorney General of Ondo State on 18th February 2021, which led the Hon the CJ to brief me to go to court.

“This was widely reported as: ‘Attorney General of Ondo State, Sir Charles Titiloye has released his report on an investigation of the allegation against Ondo State Chief Judge as contained in the video clip circulated on social media by one Olupelumi Fagboyegun.

“Judging from the above, one then wonders how the government of Ondo State that contemptuously refused to appear before the court to defend itself can resort to self-help in the form of the press statement to say it did not envice the intention of removing the CJ and that the suit was an ego trip.

“Certainly as senior lawyer and one who swore to uphold and defend Nigerian Constitution, I will not have accepted brief that was rooted in moot points.”

  • Amotekun evacuates 42 suspected Fulani invaders in Ondo

Amotekun evacuates 42 suspected Fulani invaders in Ondo

The Ondo State Government Sunday evacuated 42 suspected Fulani invaders, who were arrested on Thursday by men of the Ondo State Security Network, Amotekun, at Okitipupa, the headquarters of Okitipupa Local Government.

The suspected invaders, who are mainly from Jigawa and Kano States, claimed that they were brought to Ondo State for training as security guards.

The invaders, who assembled in front of the Army Barracks, Okitipupa before men of Amotekun, were alerted, caused panic among the residents, who suspected that they were brought to attack the town.

Addressing journalists before the people were moved out of the state in buses, the state Commander of Amotekun, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, who was flanked by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Donald Ojogo, said the government after profiling the alleged invaders, was not satisfied with their mission to the state.

He said the government considered their presence in the state a security risk, adding that it could not take chances.

Adeleye said: “In the last three days, there have been issues relating to the invasion of the state by alleged Fulani men in Okitipupa.

“We monitored and we found out that they converged in front of the army barracks. They were there for a couple of hours and at that point we tried to find out what their mission is, but because they couldn’t give satisfactory explanations, we moved them to our local office first in Okitipupa to try to debrief them and from the debriefing at Okitipupa, we had to move them to the state headquarters for proper debriefing.

“We found out that they are primarily from two major states, that’s Kano and Jigawa States. The mission that they claimed they came for, we found out that is not too clear and upon profiling, we found out that majority of them don’t even know how they got here. All they were told is they were going for training. Training for who, by who or whatsoever, they do not know.

“But from detailed investigation, we were able to narrow it down to their sponsors. The sponsors happened to also claim that they belong to an NGO, that they contracted out the training to a consultant who was supposed to train their men. They said they were going to train them as security guards.

“Right now, we look at them as security risk to the state, and at this point, we invited the sponsors, the head of the NGO and chairman of the board. They’ve also offered explanation. But we feel that we should let the people of Ondo State know that there is no crisis in Okitipupa Local Government.

“The way it was portrayed was as if some hoodlums or militants had taken over.

“We want to reassure the good people of Ondo State that we are firmly on ground in conjunction with other security agencies that there is no problem.

“Haven’t debrief them, we intended to provide escort to lead them out of Ondo State back to wherever they came from.

“As part of our discreet investigation, we found out that the so called consultant had been arrested in Delta State and I confirmed from the Delta State Police Command as at today that he’s still in their custody.

“So, why we intend to release them on bail, we will release all these ones and ensure that they are taken back to their states.”

Speaking on the matter, the state Governor, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, warned the people of the state against taking laws into their hands on any issues.

Akeredolu, who spoke through the Commissioner for Information, Mr Donald Ojogo, said the invaders would have been lynched, if not because it was professionally handled by the state particularly, the Amotekun.

“Ondo State led by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is not one that intends to take law into its own hands. The security situation we found ourselves in the last three days was a very precarious one.

“If not that it was discreetly and professionally handled and well managed by officials of government particularly Amotekun Commander and SSA on Security, the situation may have degenerated.

“As you also witnessed, none of them was molested. The situation would have degenerated to the extent of lynching and jungle justice. It was almost getting to that point when they were seen in a suspicious manner in Okitipupa but the governor had to rise up to the occasion to ensure that they were given to adequate protection so that jungle justice had to be avoided. That was one of the key points that was achieved in the last 72 hours. It was a very frightening situation.

“What government is trying to do today is to ensure that the way they came to the state, they will leave the state safely, peacefully and unhurt, so that when they get to their various states, they will also testify to their state government and their people that the movement that brought them to Ondo State was an unclear one and the state government had to protect them and move them back to their state,” Ojogo said.

The commissioner said Akeredolu had directed that no official of the state must issue statement or comment on security issues in the state.

“The governor has directed that in any security situation we found ourselves, the first point of contact must be security agencies.

“They are the only points of contact. Even me as Commissioner for Information and spokesperson of government is not authorised to speak on issues related to insecurity, no matter how insensitive it is.

“As long as it is security matter, we do not want anybody to speak without proper authorisation,” he said.

However, a new twist was added when an eyewitness expressed dismay that the alleged invaders could gather in front of the Army Barracks, for more than one hour without any action.

He said: “In view of the security situation in the country, one would have expected the military men at the barracks to arrest the invaders if not before the arrival of Amotekun men they should have intervened when the residents of the town arrived.

“These work that Amotekun is doing, the Police, Army and DSS ought to have played major roles.”
