Ondo not interested in your ‘Yoruba Nation’ agenda, Akeredolu warns Igboho, others

Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has warned Sunday Igboho and others agitating for a sovereign Yoruba State to stay away from the state.

Akeredolu said Ondo people have elected to stay in the Federal Republic of Nigeria as constituted at present.

He said no part of the entire state, known and delineated as Ondo State, would permit any gathering or agitation which may suggest, however remotely, that the people are in support of what he termed ‘unthinking rabble rousing.’

Akeredolu who spoke while swearing in Princess Catherine Oladunni Odu as the new Secretary to the State Government and other Special Advisers said the state would not subscribe to banditry and recklessness in putting forth its demands.

He said the right of citizens to discuss, agitate and even fight to right perceived wrongs, culminating in self-determination, must be done within known and acceptable parameters and all concerned must agree to pursue the same objectives to achieve a desirable or desired end.

He noted that the reasons for the declaration of hostilities must not be fleeting fancies of disaffection engendered by perceived politics of exclusion for personal benefits.

Akeredolu who condemned attack on the convoy of the Benue State Governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom, urged security agencies to unmask the agents of darkness bent on throwing the country into a state of anarchy.

Herders flee as Amotekun arrests over 100 cows in Ondo

Suspected unregistered cow herders in Ondo State ran away as Amotekun officers arrested over 100 cows in the state for flouting the open grazing laws.

The herders ran away upon sighting operatives of the Amotekun Corps.

Adetunji Adeleye, Commander of the Corps in the State said the move was part of efforts at curbing crimes in the State.

He said they were also enforcing directives of the State government that the streets and forest reserves be rid of unregistered herdsmen.

Adeleye disclosed that the cows were intercepted and arrested at the boundary of Osun and Ondo State.

He said it took officers about 30 kilometers walk to control the cows to the corps headquarters in Akure, the State capital.

“I don’t want to narrow it on the issue of capturing cattle. I would want to say it’s a way of reducing crime. These cows were actually blocking the major road leading to the State capital,” he said.

“One of the occupants of the vehicle that was blocked called our distress line and within few minutes, our men were on ground.

“We should take note that our men are in all the 18 local government areas and we are on 24 hours patrol. We arrived at the scene promptly.

“The culprits who sited us on arrival ran away and controlled the cows to follow them, but we were only able to control the cows back,” he said.

  • Ondo doctors begin indefinite strike

    Ondo doctors begin indefinite strike

Doctors working with Ondo State government, under the aegis of Ondo State Government Doctors’ Forum, on Monday, began an indefinite strike.

The Spokesperson for the forum, Dr Olubosede Omolayo, at a press conference on Tuesday in Akure, said that the strike had become imperative, following the payment of 50 percent of members’ salaries by government in November 2020.

The forum consists of Association of Resident Doctors, UNIMED THC, Nigeria Association of General Medical Forum and Dental Practitioners as well as Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria.

She said that the decision to embark on strike was taken after a meeting with members of the various associations.
Omolayo said it was unfortunate and insensitive for the state government to do such, despite owing four months’ salary, coupled with poor infrastructure in the hospitals and poor welfare packages for its members.

“After extensive deliberations, we have decided to withdraw our services at government hospitals. Many of our members have been infected with COVID-19; some have even died from the disease, while others got their family members infected and later died.

“We are over-stretched and we cannot continue working under this condition again. It’s even so bad that our COVID-19 allowances have not yet been paid,” she said.

Omolayo said letters had been sent to the governor and other relevant arms of government to explain the payment of 50 percent salary to members, but with no response.

She said that the forum was not part of the organised labour that agreed to the 50 percent salary payment with government, saying that it was a professional body and should be treated as such.

Omolayo, however, called on government to ensure payment of all outstanding arrears being owed its members, insisting that it was impossible for doctors to survive on half salaries.
