    Tijani Onwenu, the son of legendary singer and actress Onyeka Onwenu, has paid a heartfelt tribute to his mother on the first anniversary of her passing.

    TheNewsGuru recall that Onwenu on July 30, 2024,  died suddenly at 72 after collapsing following a stellar performance at Stella Okoli’s 80th birthday celebration, where doctors made every effort to save her life.

    Tijani in a post via his Instagram page stated:  “A year ago, today. RIP Mom. July 30, 2024,” sparked an outpouring of emotions from fans and fellow Nigerians, who remembered her contributions to music, film, and social causes.

    Onyeka Onwenu’s legacy continues to inspire and uplift, with her timeless music, legendary career, and lasting impact on Nigerian entertainment and culture remaining a testament to her enduring influence. She was known for her iconic albums “In The Morning Light” and “Dancing In The Sun,” as well as memorable roles in films like “Half of a Yellow Sun” and “Lionheart”

    An emotional photo of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi at the funeral service of the ace singer Onyeka Onwenu in Lagos has surfaced on social media.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the former Anambra State governor was amongst the notable persons who attended the late veteran singer’s funeral service.

    Her service of songs was held on Friday morning at the Fountain of Life Church, Ilupeju, and was attended by prominent figures.

    One of the notable persons spotted at the event was Obi, a former presidential candidate who was pictured looking sullen as he joins the rest of the crowd to pay his last respect to the late singer.

    The burial ceremony will be held around 2pm at the Ebony Vaults, James George Street, Off Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos.

    Obi had previously recalled how Onwenu collapsed after performing at the event where he was also present.

    Obi, who was amongst the notable guest present at the event said he witnessed the late singer performed, after which collapsed after drinking some water.

    The former Anambra governor noted that it was a beautiful performance, but little did they know it would be her final bow.

    Narrating the experience, he wrote; “Yesterday provided a very devastating moment for me as I witnessed a tragic event that will forever be etched in my memory. I was present at the event where the iconic song star, Onyeka Onwenu, performed a couple of her songs ending up with her famous song,

    ”One Love Keep Us Together’. It was a beautiful performance, but little did we know it would be her final bow. Just about a few minutes after her performance, she sat down and drank some water and immediately collapsed, and was rushed to the hospital.

    “I followed her to the hospital. I watched in pain as the doctors and medical staff fought tirelessly and battled to save her life , doing everything possible to bring her back to life but eventually came out with the sad news that she was gone. Despite their valiant efforts,

    “She sadly passed away after over two hours of intense struggle. My heart goes out to her children and family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. May we find the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss.”

    Final resting place of the late Nigeria’s music legend, Onyeka Onwenu has been disclosed as her obsequies revealed she would be laid to rest today in Lagos State. A service of songs will hold at Fountain of Life Church, Ilupeju in Lagos, before the burial.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Onyeka Onwenu will be buried at Ebony Vaults, Ikoyi, a memorial park established to provide befitting final resting place for beloved ones when they eventually pass away.

    Findings reveal that a basic single vault at Ebony Vaults costs a minimum of N12 million, while a premium vault tops N35 million. Tombstone at the memorial park ranges from N750,000 to N1.3 million. These figures were quoted by Ebony Vaults in 2023.

    Recall Onwenu died on July 30, 2024, aged 72, at Reddington Hospital, Ikeja, after collapsing following her performance at the birthday party of Dr Stella Okoli, the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

    In an opinion piece in 2021, Onwenu, survived by two sons, had revealed how she will prefer to be buried. “Do it quickly, quietly and privately,” she said at the time.

    She began her music career in the 1980s and released her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981. She released numerous albums and singles, including the hit song, “One Love”. Onwenu also acted in several Nollywood films and won numerous awards for her contributions to music and film.

    In addition to her entertainment career, Onwenu was also involved in politics. She was appointed as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013 and later became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016.

    She was awarded the National Honours of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.

    Finally, Nigeria’s queen of music, Onyeka Onwenu will be buried in Lagos today, Friday, August 30, 2024.

    The elegant stallion as she is known died on 30th July 2024 at Reddington Hospital, Ikeja Lagos after collapsing at function held in honour of Mrs Okoli the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

    She was 72 years old.

    According to a burial arrangement issued by the family, her funeral service will be held at the Fountain of Life Church Ilupeju and burial held at a private vault in Ikoyi.

    In her lifetime Onyeka Onwenu was a broadcaster, actress, politician and activist.

    She had several successful songs to her credit.

    She hailed from Imo State and blessed with two sons.

    Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) executives on Sunday paid a condolence visit to children of late veteran singer Onyeka Onwenu.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalled that the 72-year-old music icon had died at the Reddington Hospital, Lagos after she slumped while performing at the birthday party of famous socialite Mrs. Stella Okoli.

    The AGN President, Emeka Rollas, visited the late Onwenu’s family alongside other sympathizers, including the Chairman and Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Emmanuel Ogugua and Sony Mcdon, National Secretary of the Guild, Abubakar Yakubu, Ifeoma Okeke, Arinze Okonkwo, Mouth Piece, Ebele Okaro and Ronnie Diko.

    The AGN president via his verified Instagram page on Tuesday expressed sympathies to the family of the late singer, praying that God grants her eternal rest.

    His post reads, “Two days ago, I led a delegation of some of the Board of Trustees and senior Guild members to pay a condolence visit to the children of the late Onyeka Onwenu.

    “The Actors Guild of Nigeria sympathises with the family during this moment of grief and prays that God grants Onyeka eternal rest in His bosom.”

    They also signed the condolence register during their visit.

    Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye MFR, known professionally as King Sunny Ade, has made a lifelong promise to the late singer Onyeka Onwenu, who passed away on July 30.

    The jùjú singer, who led the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria (MCSN) on a condolence visit to the late singer’s family during the week, promised to keep her memories alive by performing their song ‘Wait for Me’ throughout his life.

    Released in 1989, the song titled “Wait for Me” by Onyeka Onwenu and King Sunny Ade is a classic song about abstinence and waiting for the right time to engage in sexual activities in a relationship.

    Sunny Ade also opened up about his relationship with the late broadcaster turn actress, saying she was more than just a friend and a cherished partner in his music career.

    He said: “I can’t explain it; you know if they give you the news of the death of a loved one who has to do with your life and also your work.

    “She’s not just an ordinary woman; she was someone who would sit down with you and she used to say, ‘Can I chip in some advice?’ and the advice was always correct.”

    Recalling her insightful contributions, KSA told Qed.ng, “She used to do more than I did; when it comes to music that people do together, she used to do more. She would tap me and say, ‘Sunny, let’s take it this way,’ and it was always good.”

    NOBODY should charge for any services for the funeral of iconic broadcaster, actress, and Onyeka Onwenu, says veteran broadcaster, Dr. Bisi Olatilo.

    “They should not charge for any services for her funeral as a lasting honour for our friend and  colleague of all times. Those who can’t provide free services should give way,” he said.

    His concerns stem from what his observations about the plans for the funeral of Onwenu.

    “I have followed closely arrangements to give Onyeka Onwenu, OFR, the best burial  ever because she has most deservedly earned it. I will make these observations which l want us to examine genuinely  without undue sentiments and bias,” Dr. Olatilo, the Chairman of Bisi Olatilo TV, said.

    “It will be an absolute disservice and most unfair to Onyeka Onwenu who gave of her highly professional services free of charge to the  entertainment fraternity for a kobo to be charged for the production of a befitting documentary  in her honour

    “There are many broadcasters among us who should be happy to do this as a well-deserved parting honour for Onyeka Onwenu

    “I repeat NO KOBO should be spent on the production of a documentary for Onyeka Onwenu.

    “All those who will serve as Masters of Ceremonies at all the events being planned should do it free of charge to hour Onyeka Onwenu who was our esteemed professional colleague,” Dr. Olatilo, an ace MC, said.

    He further suggested  that, “In the same way all radio, television  and newspaper organisations should cover all the events pre and post free as a lasting honour to Onyeka Onwenu. We should be loyal to our friends till eternity”.

    Onyeka died on 30 July 2024, after a performance at a birthday in Lagos.

    The family of late singer, Onyeka Onwenu has disclosed that her remains will be laid to rest before the end of August 2024.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) learnt the deceased’s family made this revelation while receiving Juju music maestro King Sunny Ade and veteran reggae singer Orits Wiliki on Tuesday who led the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria (MCSN) on a condolence visit.

    The delegation visited the family at their residence in Ikoyi, Lagos State.

    Onwenu, before her sudden death after her performance at the 80th birthday party of Chief Stella Okoli, owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals was a member of MCSN.

    Onwenu’s sons, Abram and Tjiani, disclosed that their intention is to respect their late mother’s wishes by burying her as soon as possible.

    According to them, the burial arrangement will be announced soonest.

    Signing the condolence register at the late singer’s home, King Sunny Ade, overwhelmed by emotion, wrote, “Dear sister and colleague, may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Your fans and friends all over the world will remember you forever “

    Others in the delegation include the flutist, Tee Mac, who promised to perform at the service of songs of the late singer, Kenny Ogugbe, Mayo Ayilaran, General Manager of MCSN, among others.

    He said: “I want to thank everyone who together with us accompanied her to the hospital yesterday. Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs John Momoh, Mr and Mrs Okonkwo, and Mr Okpara, who were with her during her last moments. Governor Alex Otti joined us also and

    “Mr. Femi Ajayi who equally returned to the hospital this morning when we had to finalized everything about her passing. May her soul rest in peace and may her legacy continue to inspire and unite us all.

    “My condolences to her family, the entertainment industry, and the nation at large. May we find solace in the memories we shared with her and the impact she had on our lives.”

    Onyeka Onwenu, who started her music career a short career in journalism was born on January 31, 1952, is a renowned Nigerian figure celebrated for her multifaceted career.

    She died on Tuesday night at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos after slumping at the birthday party of the CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Mrs Stella Okoli.

    Onwenu, who hailed from Arondizuogu, a town in Ideato North, Imo State, was born and raised in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

    She is the youngest daughter of Nigerian educationist and politician D. K. Onwenu, who tragically passed away in an auto crash when she was just four years old, a week before he was appointed Minister for Education.

    Onwenu’s impressive career spans several fields, including music, acting, human rights activism, journalism, and politics.

    Known for her powerful voice and charismatic stage presence, she earned the nickname “Elegant Stallion” from the Nigerian press.

    She served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and was also a judge on the X Factor series.

    Her music resonates across generations, with iconic songs like “One Love” and “You and I,” the latter popularised further by Africa Magic.     Onwenu announced that her latest song titled, ‘Rise Up‘, was written and produced in partnership with the Rose of Sharon Foundation, to draw attention to the plight of widows in society.

    The foundation is owned by Folorunsho Alakija, one of the richest black women in the world

    Onwenu: politics, activism
    Onwenu is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. She has contested twice to become the Local Council Chairman of her local government and lost at both attempts, but was appointed Chairperson of Imo State Council for Arts and Culture by former Governor Ikedi Ohakim.

    On September 16, 2013, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed her the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.

    She was awarded the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) for her contributions to the Nigerian entertainment industry.

    Also, she received the award of the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.

    In 2000, Onwenu protested against her former employer NTA over their refusal to pay royalties on her songs and after then-director general Ben Murray-Bruce blacklisted her from the transmission, she embarked on a hunger strike outside the stations.

    Onwenu’s activism attracted widespread support from various artists, including Charly Boy, who lambasted Nigeria’s reluctance to pay royalties when songs are broadcast on television and radio. NTA resolved to settle the issue amicably but denied barring Onwenu from appearing on their channels.

    She made a very touching viral BBC short documentary about Nigeria 40 years ago, where she stated that nothing seems to have changed in how we manage our economy, politics, leadership, etc. It’s like Nigeria has been in a cycle since Independence. It was titled, “A Squandering of Riches.”

    Onwenu notably keeps her personal life private and often refuses to disclose private information regarding her ex-husband, a Yoruba Muslim, with whom she bore two children – Tijani Charles and Abraham.

    Onwenu, Fela’s rumoured saga
    Onwenu and Fela Kuti, two iconic figures in Nigerian music, were often the subject of rumours regarding a romantic relationship.

    Despite the widespread speculation, Onyeka Onwenu has consistently denied any romantic involvement with Fela Kuti.

    Also, in her autobiography “My Father’s Daughter,” she addressed these rumours directly, clarifying that while she had great respect for Fela and admired his musical talent and activism, their relationship was purely professional and based on mutual respect.

    She acknowledged that they collaborated and shared common goals in their advocacy for social and political change in Nigeria, but any suggestions of a romantic relationship were unfounded.

    This clarification helped to put the longstanding rumours to rest, focusing attention instead on their significant contributions to Nigerian music and culture.
