What Sultan, Ooni, Orodje of Okpe, others discussed with Tinubu

After the meeting, Tinubu tweeted: “I enjoyed my engagement, this morning, with a gathering of traditional rulers from across the country.

“In the course of our dialogue, I tasked them with supporting the administration’s efforts to ensure lasting peace and unity by promoting responsible behaviour and patriotism.

“I also gave assurance of government’s support as they continue in their role as powerful custodians of our unique cultural values”.

Earlier, President Tinubu assured that his administration would run an open-door policy that listens in order  to transform the country’s rich potentials to reality.

Tinubu stated this during an interactive session with the leadership and members  of the NCTRN.

The President revealed the decision of government on fuel subsidy, security, jobs creation, enabling business environment and election of National Assembly principal officers.

‘‘We are all ears. We are ready to listen at any given time. I promise you an open-door policy and that is the way I will go.

‘‘That open-door policy is for you to call me and send to me at any given time any concern that you might have.

‘‘We may not have it right 100 per cent of the time but we must get it right 90 per cent of the time for this country,’’ he said.

On the removal  of fuel subsidy, the President appealed to the traditional leaders to persuade Nigerians to have faith and that the pump prices of fuel would eventually come down.

‘‘I am grateful that you are paying attention to what I have been doing. You have paid attention to the subsidy removal.

“Why should we in good heart and sense, feed smugglers and be Father Christmas to neighbouring countries?

‘‘The elephant that was going to bring Nigeria to its knees is the subsidy.

“A country that cannot pay salaries and we say we have potentials to encourage ourselves. I think we did the right thing,’’ he said.

While acknowledging concerns on the need for critical infrastructure in different parts of the country, Tinubu pledged that any road block on the way of the progress of the country would be removed.

‘‘The lamentations about the capital projects, where is the money going to come from if we don’t protect our resources and our boundaries?

‘‘You cannot have development without capital projects,’’ he added.

On the leadership of the National Assembly, the President urged the Royal Fathers to counsel their subjects on the need to manage their ambitions and create harmony within the legislative house.

Tinubu said he was ready to work with any elected representative, stressing that the Nigeria project was of paramount importance to him.

On security, the President reiterated his pledge to prioritise the sector until Nigerians “go to sleep with their two eyes closed.’’

He said that the unity of the country could not be compromised, adding that every region of the country would get “what it is due.”

“We are going to tackle youth unemployment. It is only when we have the prosperity for the country that we can create jobs that will employ our youths.’’

He decried crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region by a ‘tiny percentage’ of the population, adding that it was counterproductive to the economy.

“We need to tame those involved in this sabotage and we will work as hard as possible to ensure that the diversity of this country is used for its prosperity, growth and stability.’’

Tinubu told the traditional rulers he was primed for governance now the campaigns and elections were over.

On electricity, the President said a constitutional amendment signed into law now allows Nigeria’s 36 States to generate electricity.

“That’s devolution of power and that should be our contribution to the developmental projects you are looking for and we will continue in ways that will help our people,’’ he said.

Tinubu thanked members of NCTRN for their early visit and prayers for the success of his administration.

The Chairman and Co-Chairman of NCTRN pledged the support of members from the six geo-political zones.

They assured the President of their continued prayers in his resolve to move the country forward under his Renewed Hope agenda.

“We are 100 per cent in support of your government and we believe in the will of the Almighty Allah you will move this country forward.

“We will contribute our quota to the development of the country once you reach out to us,’’ the Sultan said.

The Ooni of Ife expressed delight that the country had remained united and focused in spite of its challenges.

He urged the President to explore the reach of traditional rulers in complementing the programmes and visions of the new government.

Members of the NCTRN at the interactive sessions include Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Ibn Umar Al Amin El-kanemi; Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe and Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi-Ojaja II, has said that traditional rulers are well grounded on insecurity issues, saying President Tinubu should consult them about ways to tackle insecurity in the country.

He gave the charge during a courtesy visit by the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) to the President at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

Ooni, who is also the co-chair of the traditional rulers of Nigeria, noted that the Traditional rulers would like to work with the president to tackle insecurity in the country.

Ooni said “There are areas we would like to work with you, one of which is security. It is time to use us more, we are not saying we are idle…but to make your work easier, use us.

“The foundation of this country today are the traditional rulers. We are here to pledge our loyalty and support. We want to work with you to ensure you leave a legacy.

“Don’t underestimate what traditional rulers can do”, he said.

Earlier, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, said the visit is a normal tradition by the monarchs whenever there’s a change in leadership of the country.

He said the monarchs are people of different professions, from the military to judiciary and businessmen, who have what it takes to contribute to the betterment of the society, saying, “whenever you reach out to us, we will be here.”

The Sultan, who said the monarchs do not envy President Tinubu at this time with the numerous challenges facing the country, however, expressed confidence that with the combination of himself and Vice President Kashim Shettima, they will deliver.

He said: “We thank God for the smooth way the elections took place. Many negative people thought this country would collapse, but we are still here.

“We are here for you, for our people and our country. If you don’t reach out to us, we will reach out to you.

“We wish you the most successful tenure in good health.”

Ooni charges Tinubu to swing into action in tackling national challenges

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to hastily tackle the challenges confronting the country as a man of action that he is known to be.

Ooni gave the charge through his Director of Media and Public Affairs, Otunba Moses Olafare, in a press statement on Monday in Ile-Ife.

Oba Ogunwusi congratulated Tinubu on his inauguration as Nigeria’s President And Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.

He added that capable Nigerian youth should be engaged by his administration as the country deserves its rightful position within the comity of nations.

“Mr President, congratulations from The House of Oduduwa to you and your amiable wife who is now the mother of the nation as you have officially taken the mantle of leadership as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“As we celebrate this remarkable day of your inauguration with you, we wish you monumental success in all the policies of your administration so that Nigeria can become great again and maintain her rightful position not only as truly the giant of Africa but also as a leader in the comity of nations,” Ooni stated.

According to him, citizens trust that his administration will be marked by good governance characterized by transformational economic growth, adequate security, and progress for all Nigerians both at home and in diaspora.

The Royal Father emphasized that Nigerians also trust that he’ll leverage his wealth of experience as a man of progressive action in mobilising resources and managing diverse interests to unify Nigeria across political, ethnic and religious lines.

The Ooni, who doubles as Co-chairman, National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN), tasked President Tinubu to carry the Nigerian traditional institution along, especially in tackling the security challenges in the country.

“The traditional rulers in this country are the closest to the people as there is nobody in Nigeria who is not a subject of a particular traditional ruler.

“This is why it is important for the government to empower us with more strategic constitutional roles, especially in the area of security management and conflict resolutions,” Ooni said.

In working for Africa, the Ooni admonished President Tinubu to partner the progressive African leaders and friends of Africa across the globe like President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio LULA da Silva.

He said Silva recently hosted him and his team in Brasilia, capital of Brazil, for the unveiling of Annual African Traditional Religion Day celebrations.

“As truly the giant of Africa, Nigeria must first of all be great for Nigerians and Nigeria must provide progressive leadership of unity and peace for the greatness of Africa under your watch.

“I have interacted with some African presidents who are truly looking up to Nigeria under your watch as the big brother Africa,” Ooni stated.

The Traditional Ruler further said that this dominated their discussions during the his meeting with President Williams Ruto at the State House in Nairobi, Kenya, two months ago.

“Also, the current government in Brazil under President Silva has developed numerous pro-Africa policies and programmes.

“I expect the presidency of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu who himself is a Pan-Africanist to take advantage of this for the greatness of Africa,” Ooni added.

It will be recalled that Ooni had charged Tinubu, in March, upon his declaration as president elect to hit the ground running by quickly assembling a transition team of capable individuals.

He also advised him to put up an economic blueprint capable of liberating Nigerians from poverty and insecurity.

He noted that the two major faiths and traditional worshippers had coexisted peaceful in ages past and that there should not be hostilities between them now.

Four persons were reportedly injured when traditional religion worshippers attacked worshippers in a mosque in Ile-Ile on Thursday.

Traditionalists in the town had announced on Wednesday that the “Oro’’ cult would perform some rituals in some parts of Ife between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., advising residents to avoid the areas.

According to one of those in the mosque, Mr Abdulazeez Bashir, Oro adherents broke through the fence and began flogging worshippers with canes, instructing them to leave the ablution area.

“When I discovered that about five persons had been injured, apart from the Imam of the mosque, I had to call the Ife Chief Imam, Alhaji AbdulSemiu AbdulHammed to intimate him with the happenings.

“The situation could have escalated into a big crisis when other Muslims began to gather around, but the traditionalists eventually left. The victims were later taken to a hospital for treatment,’’ Bashir said.

“This must be the end of daylight Oro procession in Ile-Ife. This is not the first time they have been attacking Muslims and Christians in daylight.

“What happened yesterday (Thursday) was barbaric and satanic, because the person that was attacked was inside the mosque. Those who are praying were inside the mosque.

“They have once attacked people. So, we are saying enough is enough. The Muslims are not happy with what they did,” Adesiyan explained.

“It happened inside the mosque and the mosque was destroyed. there was pool of blood of those injured. We are telling Nigerians that the constitution allows everyone to practice his religion as he likes,” he stated.

He observed that there has never been a day when Christians would ask Muslims to stay indoors for religion event, but the traditional worshipers were intolerant of other religions.

The Secretary emphasised that they are going to end the indiscipline act of the traditional Oro worshipers in Ile-Ife.

According to an eye witness, Mr. Bashir AbdulAzeez, “We were about to observe our Salatul Asr on Thursday evening around 4:30 pm, when scores of Oro worshipers “attacked us as we did our ablution.

“They attacked us and told us to move away. Before we could explain anything, they have started to beat our people.

“They invaded the mosque and destroyed the Quran and other properties,” AbdulAzeez stated.

According to him, the Imam and five other Muslims have been receiving treatment at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife.

#NigeriaDecides2023: INEC has no reason to disappoint – Ooni

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has no reason to disappoint Nigerians in the conduct of the forthcoming general elections.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Ooni said this while playing host to the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Mutiu Agboke, in his Palace, on Friday, in Ile-Ife.

While reaffirming the traditional institution’s support for INEC, the Ooni stressed that the future of over 200 million Nigerians rest heavily on the outcome of the poll.

“I wish to laud this current administration for providing the needs of INEC and I also commend the INEC for the introduction of high-powered technology to our electoral lives.

“If you ask me, INEC has no reason to disappoint Nigerians and I want to believe that, that won’t happen.

“The last election which held in Osun is enough as barometer for INEC to discover and overcome all possible hitches in its system so that we can have a perfect election.

“The rumour that the election could be postponed has caused a lot of panic in the system but I am also glad that INEC has debunked it and assured Nigerians that elections will hold as scheduled,” he stated.

Earlier, the Osun Resident Electoral Commissioner, who was on an advocacy visit to the palace, commended Ooni on his fatherly role.

Agboke said that all measures had been put in place to ensure a free, fair and credible general elections.

He said that gone are the days when voters would be expecting the results for days, because  presently in Nigeria, where you vote is where you’ll see the results.

“People’s votes are now counting through the introduction of technology to electioneering processes and that is why INEC is building on this achievement as we go into the forthcoming general election,” Agboke said.

The Osun REC, however, lamented the refusal of some Osun residents to collect their Permanent Voter Cards.

“In Osun State now, we have 400,585 PVCs uncollected; these PVCs are enough to make someone a member of the National Assembly.

“One of the reasons why I am here is to solicit Your Majesty’s support and help us talk to our people to collect their PVCs.

“I have also come to assure Your Majesty that nothing will determine the winner in the forthcoming elections except from the electorate in Osun,” he said.

He maintained that the era of manipulation and result forging had gone for good.

“Our Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) is the game changer for this coming election; everyone must be accredited by this machine and no one will be allowed to vote without accreditation,” Mutiu said.

“I didn’t take it seriously because I was like, ok, so what is going on? But then we met and started dating, but there was so much interference, and then we didn’t get married. That was quite devastating for me,” she said.
