  • Like raw egg, like marriage – Francis Ewherido

By Francis EwheridoI believe every marriage that breaks up impoverishes and diminishes humanity. I personally feel very sad. That is why I find the breakup of the marriage of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and his wife, Olori Wuraola Zaynab, very painful. The marriage lasted barely 17 months.

I believe every marriage that breaks up impoverishes and diminishes humanity. I personally feel very sad. That is why I find the breakup of the marriage of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and his wife, Olori Wuraola Zaynab, very painful. The marriage lasted barely 17 months.

Marriage, seemingly simple as it looks, is complicated with many twists and turns. That is why third parties should not jump to conclusions and begin to pass judgment on marital breakups. But we can all learn some lessons. Olori Wuraola talked about “false stories of infidelity and nefarious behavior” against her and a “silent king.” She was basically accusing third parties of interfering in her marriage, falsely accusing her of infertility, infidelity and behavior unbecoming of an Olori. Then her husband, whom she expected to protect her, kept quiet. The Ooni has not responded as at the time of writing and never should, if I am in his shoes. Public figure or not, marriage is a private matter and the more private, the better. The Olori has said “What I can confirm is that the Ooni and I are no more.”

So of what use is his response? Will it bring the marriage back to life? Or is he in the court of public opinion to tell his side of the story so that the court can determine who is responsible for the collapse of the marriage? Even if the public is interested in what happened behind the scene, it is just to satisfy their curiosity. The press – print, electronics and online – will also be interested to boost sales, but I do not see how all these will help the Ooni to restore his marriage.

Without hearing from the Ooni, some commentators have already started accusing the Olori of not being submissive, of wanting the glamour without the grind, of not fully understanding what she was going into. For me, what are important are the lessons the rest of can learn from the breakup. I will comment on what the Olori and others said, not because I believe them, but because these things do happen all the time and we can learn some lessons from them

One, like food, too many cooks easily spoil the broth in marriage. Even in polygamous marriages, only those involved should “cook” the food. Leave out the third parties. There is something about being involved and having the experience. Outsiders do not have it; they can only assume and assumptions are not good enough. The trouble with many marriages today results from interference by extended family members, friends and others. Sometimes the interference is direct and obvious. Sometimes, it is latent and that is the deadlier one. It creeps in like a thief in the night. It is like hypertension; if you do not diagnose it and deal with it early enough, it causes stroke to your marriage, deforms or kills it. Example is a male colleague in the office, who showers a married female colleague with gifts her husband cannot afford. This is latent interference.

Two, spouses expect and deserve protection from their other halves against third parties. It is better you protect your spouse in public and let him/her know his/her faults privately (It is not good to sweep issues under the carpet because you will not be helping your spouse to get better). Ideally, if couples, who are public figures, decide to split, it is better they make a public announcement about their separation/divorce and leave it there. “The Ooni and I are no more” should have been enough; Olori should not have smuggled in the plight of the Africa woman.

The Ooni married her alone, not all African women. Many readers never knew about the issues the Olori raised; she has accidentally become the chief broadcaster of her marital issues. Also, protecting each other should extend to keeping sealed lips about the reasons for the split, except if it is against public policy or decency, like domestic violence. As for couples, who are not in the public domain, do everything quietly and go your separate ways. No need for antagonism, which can become a stumbling block if you change your mind and decide to come back together later. Responsible spouses, in any case, do not celebrate separation/divorce. Even if the marriage was hell, rejoice privately. I do not see any reason for a show.

Three is courtship. I have written extensively on it before and will not go into details, but intending couples must spend sufficient time to study their potential spouses before going ahead with marriage. Marriage is supposed to be a lifelong journey and you do not take hasty decisions. The more you know about your fiancé(e), the higher the likelihood your marriage will survive.

Over time, I have used much imagery to depict the marital institution: cage, bed of roses, hell, building, etc. Again, I find myself using imagery, a raw egg, to describe marriage. Couples and intending couples need to treat marriage like a raw egg. Like a raw egg, marriage – every marriage – is fragile. If you do not handle it with care, it will breakup. Also, raw eggs carry with them lives of a new generation of chicken, just as marriage has a life of its own and also bring forth new lives (offspring) to perpetuate family lineage and humanity.

In addition, a mother hen sits on her eggs for about 21 days before they hatch. Twenty days is a long time in the life of a hen with a life expectancy of six to 12 years, that is, if it survives the many Easter, Christmas and other celebrations within the intervening years. Sitting for 21 days (only leaving the eggs occasionally for brief periods to grab a snack) demands love, commitment, sacrifice, patience, perseverance and focus. That is marriage for you.

If you treat it right, an egg almost always turns out just the way you want it. Those incubated hatch chicks and those boiled or fried nourish the body and provide essential proteins. Treated badly, raw eggs break or rot and produce very foul smell. That is marriage for you. Handle it well and it will bring you happiness, progress, fruitfulness, and peace of mind. Handle it wrongly and it will give you a foretaste of hell. Really, like egg, like marriage.

Inspite of all being said on the issue, decorum still requires that we in the House of Oduduwa maintains silence, at least for now.

This is because marriage is strictly a private matter that should not subjected to undue public uproar. When it is necessary for us to talk, we will surely talk on the issue,” Olafare said.

We have got to stop this culture of shaming and vilifying women with false stories of infidelity & nefarious behavior.

The spreading of false information (through “sources” afraid to be identified) is the mark of cowards and a cover up for guilty parties to justify their horrific actions. There is absolutely no truth to the media circulated lies of infidelity and infertility- on my end.

We’ve seen this movie before. Women being dragged in the press & blamed for everything under the sun. This behavior is unacceptable. I urge those involved to be mindful of their actions for the eyes of our Almighty God are always watching. The seeds of slander is a cancer that harvests to eat away the souls of the planter.

The throne is sacred and the attempts to tarnish the name of a Queen, in defense or on behalf of a silent King makes all involved look terrible. Remain dignified in all you do. It’s not the end of the world, but the start of a new chapter and you must turn the page with grace. The world is watching.

As I bid adieu to this chapter, my wish to you all is to step into your lives – boldly & fearlessly, the way God intended and live not just by words, but through example. The best chapter in our lives is the one we are writing now. Thank you for your love and support.

  • BREAKING: Ooni of Ife’s royal marriage allegedly crashes

There are strong indications that the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II and Queen Wuraola-Zynab Ogunwusi’s marriage has allegedly crashed.

“Alas, one year down the line, the marriage has crashed irretrievably. The well-celebrated marriage has run its full course. While it lasted, they had no child.

“Inside sources described the marriage as a sham, plagued by suspicion, hatred and devoid of love; they accused Olori of many unpublishable things and lack of commitment to her marital vows. Even as you read she is not on talking terms with her in-laws. The allegations are as wide as they are wild.” TheCapital.ng reports.

From TheNewsGuru.com findings, the last time Queen Wuraola appeared on the official Instagram page of the Ooni was on the 20th of April, 2017.

“Back then when Olori Wuraola held sway, she had the world at her feet; she got her wishes at the snap of a finger and she literally ruled the royal household. Wherever he went, she was constantly by his side. She basked in the stratospheric adulation that came with being the apple of the Ooni’s eyes. Pray, who wouldn’t?

“Unfortunately, things have changed and many within the palace now snigger and sneer at her for losing her position as the queen to one of the most powerful Monarchs in Africa.

“Curiously, however, on arrival from a trip recently, Olori Wuraola scurried to the home of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to intervene and probably advise her husband not to be influenced to dump her like a bad habit and get another wife. Both have since gone their separate ways perhaps ruing what was and what could have been.” Capital.ng claimed.

Meanwhile, a close monitoring of the Instagram page of Queen Wuraola by TheNewsGuru.com also revealed that speculations on the marital crisis have been on for over two months.

In a photo of herself with the Ooni of Ife, which she posted on her official Instagram page, with the caption’ “#baecheck” Queen Wuraola in the photograph was seen spying on her husband’s phone and this apparently raises ‘TRUST’ questions which have generated debates on the social media space.

However, she made no other direct comment on the state of her marriage on the said issue.

The Ambassador to the maiden Queen Moremi of Ile-Ife, Princess Ronke Ademiluyi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that amount was to offset their registration.

” The monarch said the amount is to encourage more young ladies who may not have the financial means to participate in the contest to do so

“I am therefore, encouraging more young girls to embrace this exceptional opportunity of free registration,” she said.

Ademiluyi said that the idea behind organising the Queen Moremi contest by the Ooni, was a recreation of the Legacy of the referred and legendary Queen Moremi Ajasoro.

She said that the contest would enable young ladies of today get prepared for the future, reawaken their cultural identity and imbibe decent morals in them.

” As a cultural promoter and ambassador to Queen Moremi, I encourage young girls to embrace decent and culturally edifying outfits and brands.

“A lot of morals have been lost, the new generation of women don’t have many values for themselves and the Moremi project is trying to instil back those values.

” Values as selflessness, courage and discipline, which Queen Moremi Ajasoro exhibited in her lifetime,” she said.

She noted that the vision of the Ooni, was to bring back those unique values associated with the Queen, through the cultural pageant.

She said that the current queen, Blessing Animashaun, a 600- level Dental-Surgery student of the University of Ibadan was crowned by the Ooni of Ife out-out 375 contestants in 2016 in Ile Ife.

Ademiluyi, who is the founder of Africa Fashion Week Nigeria/London, said the cultural contest, first of its kind, was to boost our culture and tradition, especially among youths.

“The contest is open to young ladies from ages 18 years to 25 years, of which at least one of their parents must be of Yoruba lineage from Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, Lagos, Ondo, Kwara and Kogi states,” she told NAN.

‘Warn your children to desist from violence,’ Ooni urges parents

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has advised parents to warn their children to avoid violence.

Ogunwusi gave the warning when a group of the Ife Muslim Community visited his Palace on Sunday as part of the Eid-el-Fitr celebration in Ile-Ife.

He urged the youth to focus their attention on things that would bring progress and development to the country.

The Ooni thanked Allah for giving the Muslim faithful the grace to witness the 2017 Eid-el-Fitr and congratulated them on the festival.

According to him, 70 per cent of Nigeria’s population is made up of the youth.

The monarch appealed to youth to shun inflammatory statements that could cause chaos.

“They should rather pursue and champion peaceful coexistence across the nation.

The Ooni charged all tribes to be very careful and wary of incitement, and to look at things that are productive.

He called them to focus on things that would strengthen the nation rather than violence.

Ogunwusi urged those in position of authority to concentrate in engaging youths in gainful employment.

Earlier, the Chief Iman of Ifeland, Alhaji Abdul Semiu AbdulHammed, advised Muslims to emulate Prophet Mohammed and uphold the pillars of Islam.

AbdulHammed urged them to work with the fear of Allah and also maintain peace and harmony with their children and families.

He urged the government to ease the sufferings of Nigerians and pay salaries regularly.

The cleric said that if everyone put on the fear of Allah in executing their activities, Nigeria would be better.

Also speaking, Alhaji Saka Fawole, the Secretary to Ife Muslim Community, charged Muslims to continue worshipping Allah in truth and holiness.

Fawole advised them not to go back to sinful acts after the Ramadan.

  • Minimum wage, Kanu’s release, Ooni’s humiliation dominate Google search

Nigerians searched frantically on Google last week for a new minimum wage, envisaged to be announced by the Federal Government on Workers’ Day.

According to the Spokesman of Google, Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, hundreds of Nigerians took to Google to get information on a long-envisaged new minimum wage.

Kola-Ogunlade, who is Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager for Anglophone West Africa, made the disclosure in Lagos on Thursday.

He said that in the week under review, terms ranging from assurance on a new minimum wage, to a viral video of monarchies supposedly embarrassing each other and marriage troubles, trended on Google Nigeria search.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the one-week search on the search engine started from April 27 and ended on May 3.

Kola-Ogunlade recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had assured Nigerian workers speedy passage of a new national minimum wage.

“President Buhari, marking Workers Day on May 1, 2017, said that he is happy to announce that government will give expeditious consideration to the proposal contained in the technical committee’s report, which was submitted to it on April 6, 2017.

“The proposal details the setting up of the new national minimum wage committee and the needed palliatives.

“Workers searched Google for ‘Workers’ Day Message’, Happy Workers’ Day Images, Workers’ Day Wishes, Workers’ Day in U.S.A and Workers’ Day SMS.”

The spokesman said the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, also featured on Google search.

He said that Kanu was finally released from jail on April 28, after he met the stringent bail conditions handed down to him by the trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

“Trending Google search terms following the release include: Nnamdi Kanu bail conditions, Has Nnamdi Kanu met his bail conditions, Bail conditions for Nnamdi Kanu and Nnamdi Kanu rejects bail.”

Kola-Ogunlade said that Google search was flooded for a video of the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, refusing to shake the hand of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

The Google manager said that the video made rounds across online media platforms in the week under review.

He said that in the 25 seconds video, which had gone viral, the Ooni of Ife was seen arriving at an event which had the Oba of Lagos, sitting beside another oba.

“The Ooni walked over to greet the obas but as soon as he offered the Oba of Lagos his hand, Oba Akiolu looked away and dismissed him with a wave of the hand.

“The embarrassed monarch quietly returned to his seat.

Kola-Ogunlade said that actress Mercy Aigbe’s seven-year-old marriage to hotelier Lanre Gentry also featured top on Google search.

According to him, the marriage is rumoured to be on the rocks, amid rumours of infidelity and domestic violence.

Kola-Ogunlade said that the 38-year-old actress shared a cryptic Instagram post on domestic violence on April 28.

The manager said that the cryptic Instagram had the saying: “Say no to domestic violence’, which made many people began to wonder if Mercy suffered the same fate as many Nigerian women.

He said that with search terms such as ‘Mercy Aigbe domestic violence’, ‘Mercy Aigbe beaten’, ‘Mercy Aigbe’s marriage’ and ‘Mercy Aigbe and husband’ seeing high search volumes, it was clear many people were concerned.

The spokesman noted that the Federal Government would soon invite Anthony Joshua, the newly-crowned unified world heavyweight boxing champion to Nigeria.

He said that the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made the disclosure in a statement issued in Lagos.

“The government has congratulated Joshua, the British professional boxer of Nigerian descent, who recently defeated Ukrainian Vladimir Klitschko to become the unified world heavyweight champion.

“Many Nigerians took to Google to search for ‘Anthony Joshua vs Klitschko fight highlights’, ‘Anthony Joshua vs Klitschko fight time’, ‘Anthony Joshua vs Klitschko DSTV’, ‘Anthony Joshua vs Klitschko on DSTV’ and ‘Anthony Joshua vs Klitschko video,” Kola-Ogunlade said.

Google Trends, launched in May, 2006, allows one to see how popular search terms and their demography have been overtime on Google.
