PDP still viable opposition, says Reps Minority Leader

The Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, Rep. Kingsley Chinda, has said that in spite the recent defection of two of PDP lawmakers to the ruling APC, the party still remains a viable opposition in the country.

Chinda told newsmen in Abuja on Thursday that the party was just in a ‘phase of interest pursuit’ rather than undergoing a protracted crisis.

“PDP is still a viable opposition; we are not in any protracted crisis; rather, what we are passing through is just caused by pursuit of interest.

“PDP is not the only political party with internal challenges; every other party faces the same situation at one time or the other,” he said.
The minority leader, who reaffirmed the unity in PDP, urged defecting members to follow the proper procedure.

He explained that the party had pending cases in court seeking interpretation to the consequences of defection without proper procedures.

The lawmaker called for reorientation and education of party ideology in order to prevent reckless defections.

“Defections, in developed climes, are not common because every political party has its ideology,’’ he said.

According to him, membership of every political party in developed democracy is predicated on the ideology of the party.

“In Nigeria, most parties don’t have ideologies. In other climes, people cling to parties according to their ideologies,” he said.
Chinda, however, said that plans were on by the minority caucus in the house of representatives to devise means of reducing defections without due process.

NAN reports that two of the PDP members in the house had, between Tuesday and Wednesday, defected to the ruling.

They were Reps Amos Magaji (Zango Kataf/Jaba Federal Constituency of Kaduna) and Salisu Koko (Koko-Besse/Maiyama Constituency of Kebbi State).

Opposition lawmakers want PDP national leadership reconstituted

The Coalition of Opposition Lawmakers in the House of Representatives has called for the reconstitution of the national leadership of the main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The coalition made the call in a statement issued by its spokesman, Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere (PDP-Imo) on Sunday in Abuja.

The lawmaker alleged that some national leaders of the party were working with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders.

Ugochinyere said there was a plan to ensure that the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to choose a Chairman from North Central where the position was originally supposed to come from was not possible.

The rep alleged that there were some impostors in PDP, adding that APC members would be laughing at the PDP now that they wanted to sabotage their party.

He said that the reasons given since last year for not holding a NEC meeting to choose new leaders were no longer tenable.

“Till now, no NEC meeting. They keep giving different excuses.

“If the founding fathers of this party are still alive and are seeing what I am seeing they will be crying.

“At a time when Nigeria is facing a serious crisis, the main opposition party is now in the bed with the ruling party,” he said.

The lawmaker said that it was shameful that PDP was now in disarray.

Ugochinyere said that the acting leadership of the party had forgotten the expectations of Nigerians for a vibrant opposition.

The lawmaker, however, commended leaders in the party who had remained loyal and faithful to the principles of the party.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the PDP Governors Forum has given a three-month ultimatum for the NEC meeting to hold.

Bassirou Faye: Opposition should take a cue from Senegal to remove ruling party – Atiku

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) in the 2023 polls, Atiku Abubakar has said that the victory of Bassirou Diomaye Faye in Senegal has underscored the need for opposition parties in Nigeria to unite and remove President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

The Waziri of Adamawa added that Faye’s emergence as Senegalese President-Elect shows that democracy is the best form of government.

Posting on X, Atiku wrote: “Against the backdrop of recent military interventions in the West African subregion, the election of Bassirou Diomaye Faye as Senegal’s President-elect in the election of March 24, 2024 gives hope to the future of constitutional democracy in the region.

“For us in Nigeria and elsewhere, there’s a huge lesson to be learnt from the Senegal experience. It is an affirmation that democracy, which is anchored on the supremacy of the ballot, represents the best form of government. It is also possible for the electoral umpire to run an election on the basis of the law and its own guidelines that give confidence to all parties and the voters.

“Our experiences in both 2019 and 2023 show clearly that INEC performed below this expectation.

“Whereas in Senegal, the responses of the major actors and the citizens are a validation of the process of the election that voted for President-elect Bassirou Diomaye.

“It is important to note that last Sunday’s election in Senegal follows the trend of that in Nigeria in 2015 that the opposition can indeed be victorious in an election conducted by the ruling party.

“And for the opposition parties, the lessons are in agreement with my persistent call for our opposition parties to forge a coalition that is formidable enough to oust the ruling party if the salvaging of Nigeria is to stand any chance.

“Congratulations, President-elect Faye. It is my hope and prayer that your election will not only be hugely beneficial to the people of Senegal but also an inspiration to the rest of us in the West African subregion.”

  • Sierra Leone opposition supporters protest against electoral body

Sierra Leone opposition supporters protest against electoral body

Police and protesters clashed on Wednesday when the supporters of the opposition party All People’s Congress, APC, who are accusing the electoral commission and its chairman Mohamed Konneh of alleged bias in favor of the ruling party.

The protesters are demanding the release of a more detailed voter register.

“We are here to protest because we want a credible election. All we are asking for, we don’t have problems with the government of the day. We just want a credible election. If the election is free and fair, definitely there will be no protest,” one protester said.

“We have several issues we have raised to  Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone, ECSL. They have not considered and adhered to the issues. We are in the majority. If Konneh knows he is not biased he should listen to the people of the country because we are in the majority,” another protester said.

Thirteen people are vying for the top job in the West African country. But experts say it’s likely to be a two-horse race between incumbent President Julius Maada Bio, elected in 2018 and fighting for his second term, and Samura Kamara, the head of the All People’s Congress Party, Sierra Leon’s main opposition camp.

The winner needs 55% of the vote to clinch victory in the first round or it goes into a runoff within two weeks.

More than three million people are registered to vote in the coming week. This would mark the country’s fifth presidential election since the end of a brutal 11-year civil war, more than two decades ago, which left tens of thousands dead and destroyed the country’s economy.

Sierra Leone had witnessed two peaceful transfers of power since, from the ruling party to the opposition party.

  • 80-year-old Obiang re-elected President of Equatorial Guinea for 6th term

80-year-old Obiang re-elected President of Equatorial Guinea for 6th term

President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has won a sixth term in office, a much-expected result in an authoritarian country with next to no political opposition.

The 80-year-old has been in power for 43 years — the longest rule of any leader alive in the world today except monarchs.

During his election campaign in 2009, Obiang promised “social housing for all” in the oil-rich central African state.

Obiang planned to provide enough housing to raise Malabo’s shanty towns, including Nubili, a mass of tin-roofed shacks along narrow paths that is home to thousands of families in the heart of the city.

Since, some 20,000 housing projects have sprung up in the country of around 1.5 million residents.

But sitting outside his shack in Nubili, 70-year-old Julio Ondo said none of them appeared to be for people like him.

“They’ve made fools of the poor,” he said. I’ve lost all hope of one day living in “dignified housing”.

Most people live in poverty in Equatorial Guinea, the World Bank estimates, while wealth is concentrated in the hands of just a few families.

    – ‘I’ll be dead’ –

In some parts of Malabo today, lines of identical apartment blocks have sprung up as far as the eye can see, built with the profits of high international oil prices.

In the suburb of Buena Esperanza, some 2,300 small detached homes appeared during the 2010s, supposed to welcome families from Nubili.

But today, shiny four-wheel drives and other expensive cars line the neighbourhood’s streets, appearing to indicate the wealth of its new residents.

The homes are being sold for around $15,500, payable in monthly instalments of $78.

But that is astronomical for many in Nubili.

Plantain farmer Antonio Omecha, 72, is one of many who had hoped the housing plan would allow him to leave a slum plagued with disease and frequent fires.

He said he did receive a housing coupon to go and live in Buena Esperanza.

“But we had to pay 1.5 million francs (more than $2,350)” upfront first, he said.

It was impossible on his monthly income of $30.

His neighbour Tobias Ondo, 65, said the new homes were simply too expensive.

“Do you really think someone who works seven days and barely makes 2,000 francs can afford to own such a home?” he said.

“I’ll be dead before I go and live in the public housing promised by the president.”

    – ‘Powerful’ landlords –

Equatorial Guinea is the region’s third richest country, with a GDP per capita of $8,462 last year, after the Seychelles and Mauritius, the World Bank says.

But in 2006, when the oil boom was in full swing, more than three quarters of the population lived in “extreme poverty”, or on less than $1.90 a day, the international financial body said. There have been no new figures since.

The country ranked 172 out of 180 in Transparency International’s 2021 Corruption Perceptions Index.

During his election campaign at the start of the month, Obiang admitted that social housing intended for “people without great means” had been snapped up instead by “people able to build their own home”.

But he did not offer a solution.

Martinez Obiang, of micro-financing firm Atom Finances, says he thinks the homes should have cost no more than the equivalent of $780, payable in tiny monthly instalments of less than $3.

Sociologist Nsogo Eyi said the new homes, including those in Buena Esperanza, did not seem to be serving their intended purpose.

“Some powerful men have bought them to rent them out, including to expats,” he said.

AFP reached out to several of these new owners, but they refused to comment.

  • Opposition sponsoring thugs to destroy our commonwealth in Adamawa – Gov Fintiri

Opposition sponsoring thugs to destroy our commonwealth in Adamawa – Gov Fintiri

Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has accused opposition forces of sponsoring critics and thugs to undermine his administration

Fintiri, who spoke to newsmen in the course of inspecting projects around the state capital, Yola, charged the opposition to appreciate his projects and join him in advancing the cause of the state.

“They should not be sponsoring thugs to destroy our Commonwealth, they should come and see what we are using public funds for,” the Governor said.

The governor, who said unconstructive criticisms serve no public good, stressed he is using funds for capital projects, which he said should be appreciated.

Ongoing projects which the governor inspected during the weekend include Dougire Lane, Government House back gate road, Doctors Quarters, Zumo Street and Link, Lagos Street Off Army Barracks road, Falu Road and links, among others, all within the metropolitan Yola North and Yola South local government areas.

Fintiri, who said his intention is to build a state that can compete with other developed states, vowed that no amount of pressure will deter him from executing people-oriented projects.

“I expect the opposition forces to come and see how government’s funds are judiciously utilized for the common good of the citizenry,” he reiterated, declaring that despite the activities of hoodlums who last Sunday and Monday vandalised government and private warehouses and stores, his administration would not be distracted from its projects.

He expressed satisfaction with projects being carried out under the Urban Renewal Programme, assuring that he would continue to strive to meet with the yearnings of Adamawa people.

Out of the eight road projects that Fintiri reached during the inspection of Saturday, those of Dogirei Lane and Lekki Tabba streets, both in Jimeta, Yola North LGA, had been completed.

  • Ex-Oyo Gov, Akala replies Makinde for calling opposition ‘charlatans’

Ex-Oyo Gov, Akala replies Makinde for calling opposition ‘charlatans’

A former governor of Oyo State and an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Adebayo Alao-Akala, has advised the incumbent Seyi Makinde against abusing or using foul language for his predecessors in any circumstance.

Akala gave the advice in an interview with reporters at the empowerment programme of Sen. Fatai Buhari in Iseyin on Friday. The lawmaker distributed vehicles, motorcycles, laptops, start-up capital and other items worth about N120 million to his constituents in the 13 local governments of the Oyo North Senatorial District.

While inaugurating the Light-Up Oyo State project in Ogbomoso on Wednesday, Makinde had stressed that his administration was delivering on its campaign promise to use the state’s resources to impact the people of the state. Judging by his administration’s achievements, the governor took a swipe at the opposition and vowed that “charlatans” would no longer govern Oyo State.

But when asked to respond to Makinde’s attack, Alao-Akala said: “I don’t believe he said that. If he said that, he is making a mistake. You don’t address your predecessors as charlatans. You don’t do that. It is unstatesmanlike. You just have to talk like a statesman that he is going to be after he must have left office.

“You would see the way we have been addressing him. None of us who has been in that office before has ever addressed him that he is not doing very well. He is doing his best. The best may not be enough for the people. When it is time for campaign, we will campaign. But don’t use that word ‘charlatan.’ It was unstatesmanlike for him to use.”

Sen. Buhari explained that he embarked on the mega empowerment for the third time because it is a direct dividend of democracy for the people. The lawmaker added that since he started four years ago, he has seen many beneficiaries whose lives have been transformed by the work tools and start-up capital.

The items include 20 cars, 270 motorcycles, 100 laptops, 600 grinding machines, 250 sewing machines, cash support of N20,000 for 100 widows, 100 elders and the vulnerable, N20,000 cash bursary for 100 students, N100,000 start-up capital each for 10 youths and N10,000,000 for various community projects.

At the programme were APC State Chairman, Akin Oke, and top party leaders including a former deputy governor, Iyiola Oladokun, and Sen. Teslim Folarin. The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, was represented by Dr. Yunus Akintunde.

  • We will reject plot by opposition Govs to truncate our democracy – APC Youths

We will reject plot by opposition Govs to truncate our democracy – APC Youths

The APC Youth Solidarity Network (APCYSN) has vowed to resist any attempt by some governors in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (APC) to truncate the nation’s hard-earned democracy due to their selfish taste for power.

According to the group, there is an ongoing plot to trigger a mutiny in the ranks of the military to give advantage to Boko Haram terrorists, thereby rubbishing the efforts of the Service Chiefs.

In a statement signed by Coordinator, Comrade Danesi Momoh, on Friday, APCYSN revealed that while the Federal Government was battling and winning the fight against COVID-19, these disgruntled politicians planted seeds of tribal discord in the military.

Mr Momoh said his group had intercepted hate messages sent to poison the minds of young officers from the South, so as to encourage them not to obey others from their superiors.

The mastermind of this plan is Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers with the backing of his Sokoto counterpart, Aminu Tambuwal, APCYSN disclosed.

The group, however, strongly warned: “these unpatriotic elements to stay away from this cause of action because it is not in the interest of the country”.

It added that such open invitation to overthrow the current government is a serious issue which should not be toyed with.

While commending President Muhammadu Buhari for his handling of insecurity, COVID-19 and APC crisis, the group passed a vote of confidence on the Service Chiefs and others involved in securing the lives of Nigerians.

  • Opposition paid miscreants to boo Buhari in Borno – Presidency

Opposition paid miscreants to boo Buhari in Borno – Presidency

The Presidency has accused opposition politicians of paying miscreants to boo the presidential motorcade in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Wednesday.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, made the allegation in an interview with the Hausa Service of the BBC.

Residents of Maiduguri had on Wednesday, booed the motorcade of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, (retd.), during his condolence visit to the state over the killing of over 30 travellers at Auno park.

Shehu said, “I was part of the delegation that entered Maiduguri right from the airport to the Palace of the Shehu of Borno. The people came out to say thank you and welcome us.

“But there was a group which came out shouting ‘we don’t want’.”

He said, maybe “some politicians gathered some miscreants and paid them money to boo Buhari”.

The presidential aide said whoever recorded the booing incident and shared it on social media didn’t do justice to the people of Borno State whom he said had a reputation for welcoming guests.

Shehu also said it was not possible to satisfy everyone since no human being was god, especially in a city like Maiduguri which has a population of four to five million people.

He noted that the regime of the President had demonstrated the capacity to fight Boko Haram and he had promised to change strategy in dealing with what he described as a new problem.

  • Nigeria needs better opposition to replace PDP – APC

Nigeria needs better opposition to replace PDP – APC

Nigeria needs a more vibrant opposition party than the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has said.

It challenged other opposition political parties to fill the gap the PDP is allegedly not fulfilling.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, APC said: “This is exactly our fear. Is this not a confirmation of APC’s earlier position that Nigeria was fast becoming a one-party state as a result of the rudderless and soulless PDP, Nigeria’s supposed main opposition party?

“No doubt, our country deserves a strong and vibrant opposition to play its conventional role in the polity and to deepen democracy. The PDP has shown crass and shocking incapacity to perform that role. As a party that believes in democracy and progressive politics, we are worried by this obvious vacuum.

“No rigorous and intelligent interrogation of the current administration’s policies and programmes by the PDP. Just idle chatter, propagation of fake news, post-election delusions and other unpatriotic conducts. This is dangerous for our democracy. The APC hereby invites other registered political parties to step up and perform the crucial opposition role the PDP has failed so woefully to play.

“On the governance side, the PDP is reminded to compare its past administrations, which enjoyed record earnings, yet frittered our commonwealth. With limited resources, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration continues to achieve several visible milestones.

“The governing APC recognises the importance of a vibrant opposition, which the PDP has failed woefully to play. Of the several other registered political parties, we challenge any of them to step up and play this important role.”

The PDP yesterday urged security agencies to question APC leaders on the violence and killings that characterised the November 16 governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states.

The party said its call for action followed emerging revelations that some APC leaders were behind the violence that marred elections in the two states.

In a statement by its spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP said demand came on the heels of “shocking attempts” by the APC to dismiss nationwide calls for electoral reforms, with allusions by its spokesperson Lanre Issa-Onilu, that “no amount of reform” can help PDP’s outcry and demand for violence-free election in Nigeria.

Issa-Onilu said on Monday that what the PDP needed was internal reform.

The statement said: “By gloating and interpreting national and international concerns over bloodletting and violence in our elections as PDP’s ‘malady’, the APC has further confirmed apprehensions that it is the mastermind of the horrific violence and forceful invasion of polling units to aid their rigging plots…”

“Our party invites Nigerians to note that only a mastermind and beneficiary of a crime would seek ways of dismissing, covering or diverting attention from the crime.

“It is now no longer strange that APC leaders have been trying every means to frustrate investigations into the bloody brigandage … unleashed in the elections, in which about 10 Nigerians were reportedly beheaded in Bayelsa while over 22 others were felled in Kogi, including an innocent mother, Mrs. Salome Abuh, who was burnt alive in her home by APC agents.”
