ORGAN HARVEST: Ekweremadu’s wife in tears during cross-examination

The wife of Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Beatrice, sobbed almost uncontrollably on the witness stand at the Old Bailey on Tuesday, as she was cross-examined in the ongoing conspiracy to facilitate and arrange travel for the aim of exploitation, a trial involving the couple, Sonia, their daughter and Dr Obinna Obeta.

If it – the meeting- did not happen, let me not reach my house when I’m going home

Led in cross-examination by the Crown’s Ms. Patterson, Mrs. Ekweremadu revealed that the trial has had a ripple effect on her family to the effect that both her own mother and the Senator’s mother have not been well since their arrests in June last year and this subsequent trial. Sobbing profusely, she said: “everything we worked for in 28 years is being destroyed and all sorts of stories are being told about us.’’

Though she admitted to the jury that the family lied that David Nwamini was Sonia’s maternal cousin, she told the court “l’ve already said we’re sorry, but that’s not who we are.”

HOW THE MEETING FOR ALLEGED ORGAN HARVEST WAS HELD

When Ms. Patterson alleged that “you and your family brought him – Nwamini – to exploit him,” the mother of four replied and said: “that’s not true. I just wanted my daughter to get well like any other mother.’’ When Patterson claimed Mrs. Ekweremadu couldn’t have been telling the truth when she said both her and Sonia met Nwamini for lunch a second time in February of last year to thank him for wanting to donate his kidney to her, an agitated Mrs. Ekweremadu responded and told the prosecutor, “if it – the meeting- did not happen, let me not reach my house when I’m going home.”

ORGAN HARVEST: Ekweremadu's wife in tears during cross-examination

Earlier in the testimony, Patterson, in trying to establish the prosecution’s conspiracy, cited a November 1st 2021 message that her former Deputy Senate President husband had forwarded to her. She then asked Mrs Ekweremadu “what do you think that message- about cost of hotel accommodation- was about?” Ekweremadu told her: ”it’s self explanatory,” and that it was about “people coming up to be tested “ to determine if they matched Sonia’s situation.

When the junior prosecutor said it was payment and reward, the Senator’s wife disagreed. According to her: ”somebody coming to help you should not use their money.” When asked why she responded to her husband’s message, she told the barrister, “I didn’t know it would come to this.” Patterson continued and also asked “why didn’t you ask what the payment was about?”

Mrs Ekweremadu, whose three other children were watching from the public gallery -and Sonia in the dock – responded and said “I trust his sense of judgment. My husband is a good man and I’ve come to trust him.”

Ekweremadu tells London court why he sought kidney donor outside his family

Ike Ekweremadu, a former Deputy President of the Senate, has told a court in London why he sought a kidney donor outside his family, saying that he was advised by his doctor against seeking a kidney donor from among his family members.

Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, are currently facing charges in the United Kingdom after they allegedly lured a young man from Nigeria to harvest his organ for their ailing daughter, Sonia, who is also standing trial.

The lawmaker was last year arrested and had been in the custody of UK authorities after they received complaints from the young man about their alleged plans to harvest his organ.

It was gathered that the young man, a trader from Lagos, was to be rewarded for donating a kidney to Sonia in an £80,000 private procedure at the Royal Free Hospital in London.

The Ekweremadus, however, decided to turn their interest to Turkey in search of the needed organ after the 21-year-old was rejected as unsuitable.

While cross-examining the lawmaker, Prosecutor Hugh Davies KC said, “On the question of whether a family member could, in principle, act as a donor, you decided that was not possible based on a reported conversation between your non-nephrologist brother and Dr Obeta, a non-nephrologist?”

In response, Ekweremadu said, “He would have had basic knowledge. I’m not a doctor, so if he says so, I believe him.”

But Davies said, “All you had to do, rather than rely on a second-hand account from non-nephrologists, was to ask one of the specialists you were consulting whether a family member could donate a kidney.”

Ekweremadu, however, suggested he had “limited intelligence,” a claim that was rejected by the prosecutor, who said, “It is incredible. You do not lack intelligence.”

Davies continued, “The fact is you did not even try to ask Sonia’s cousins, for example, to consider acting as a donor.

“What you are saying is you had no intention of anyone in your family – immediate or extended – stepping up to donate a kidney to Sonia.

“Far better to buy one and let the medical risk go to someone you don’t know.”

Responding, Ekweremadu said it was “not true” that he agreed to get a donor by going through agents for the task.

Davies responded, “The pattern of communication reflects none of the type of human communication and contact you would expect if you and your family had believed that (the proposed donor) was a good Samaritan.”

    Ekweremadu repeated, “Not true.”

    Ike Ekweremadu

Davies asserted, “The transplant with (the donor), not having gone ahead, you and your family then immediately sought to recruit further donors for reward, transferring jurisdiction out of the UK to Turkey.

“That failed too because even that donor had not been trained properly to give the false answers when interviewed.”

The defendant dismissed the prosecutor’s claims, saying, “These are not the facts.”

Davies continued, “You did not move away from the Royal Free clinical team because they lacked expertise.

“When another donor was required you immediately sought to transfer the clinical process to Turkey.”

On why the Ekweremadus had been prepared to leave an “internationally recognised centre of excellence” in London for an unknown quantity in Turkey, the lawmaker replied Davies, saying treatment in Turkey was “cheaper”.

Mr Davies responded, “You were looking to cut corners on your daughter’s clinical outcome to save money? You were a wealthy man, senator.”

According to Daily Mail, the defendant, who owns dozens of properties in Nigeria and Dubai, and sent his children to be privately educated, denied being a wealthy man.

Davies said, “That’s not true. Think of the number of properties you own.”

Meanwhile, TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Ekweremadu remains in custody while the trial of his family and a medical “middleman”, Dr Obinna Obeta, at the Old Bailey continues.

ORGAN HARVEST: Senator Ekweremadu’s daughter, Sonia absent in UK court

Sonia, daughter of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has been unable to make it to court following her accusation, alongside her father, mother (Beatrice) and a doctor, of bringing a 21-year-old man from Nigeria to have his kidney removed.

Though Sonia was absent in court, Nigeria’s former deputy senate president and his wife (parents) appeared in a London court on Tuesday ahead of their trial for organ harvesting.

Ekweremadu, 60, appeared at the Old Bailey court wearing a grey tracksuit top, speaking only to say “Yes, miss” when asked to confirm his name.

According to the prosecutors, the defendants planned to have a kidney removed from the man so that it could be given to Sonia.

ORGAN HARVEST: Senator Ekweremadu's daughter, Sonia absent in UK court

Sonia was unable to attend court as she is currently in hospital with an unspecified condition.

Her defence team has also submitted a psychological report, claiming she is not fit to stand trial.

The court adjourned soon after convening in order for prosecutors to read the report.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the accuser is said to have raised the alarm after refusing to consent to the procedure, following preliminary tests at a north London hospital.

Charges were brought after the man went to the police. The Ekweremadus were arrested in June last year at London’s Heathrow airport after flying into the UK.

Another man, Obinna Obeta, a 50-year-old doctor from south London, was arrested at a later date.

The trial has been brought forward from a planned date in May.

ORGAN HARVEST: Senator Ekweremadu's daughter, Sonia absent in UK court

Ekweremadu is a senator for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Enugu state in southeast Nigeria.

The Ekweremadus and the doctor are accused of conspiracy to arrange the travel of another person with a view to exploitation, under UK legislation on modern slavery.

The offence is alleged to have taken place between August 2021 and May 2022.

The Nigerian senator had his bail plea rejected over concerns he might flee Britain.

Obeta was also detained. Beatrice and Sonia Ekweremadu are on conditional bail.

Beatrice, dressed all in black, sat next to her husband in the dock during the brief session on Tuesday morning.

Supporters and protesters both gathered around the London court ahead of Tuesday’s hearing.

“I mean, this case is unbelievable. Where else in the world would you have a deputy senate president — who is still a serving senator, he’s still getting his regular wage?” said protester Citizen Gbola.

The young man, who made the report shortly after arriving in the UK from Nigeria, also alleged that he was made to undergo some medical tests, none of which he consented to.

Ekweremadu was immediately arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court for bringing a child into the UK to harvest his organs.

While the lawmaker had been in custody since June 23, his wife, Beatrice, who was arrested with him, was granted bail by a criminal court in London shortly after their arrest.

Monday (today) makes it 221 days since Ekweremadu was placed in the custody of UK authorities.

The case against the lawmaker which had been slated for May was later scheduled for January 31.

The 60-year-old, who denied the allegations against him, will again appear before High Court Judge, Mr Justice Johnson.

Organ Harvesting: After 223-day detention, Ekweremadu to appear in court Tuesday

His daughter, Sonia, had on November 7, 2022, appeared in court to defend the accusation of trafficking a homeless man into the UK to harvest his organs for herself.

It was gathered that the 25-year-old Sonia, who is battling a kidney-related illness, pleaded not guilty to the charge level against her when she appeared again in court on January 13.

  • Alleged organ harvest: Court grants Ekweremadu, wife’s request, orders CTC release of Ukpo’s biodata

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday, ordered the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and others to release the certified true copy (CTC) of David Ukpo’s biodata to former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife, Beatrice.

Justice Inyang Ekwo gave the ruling following an originating summon marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/984/2022, moved by Ekweremadu’s counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN.

Newsmen report that on June 27,  Ekweremadu and his wife had, in the application dated and filed on June 27 by Awomolo, sued NIMC and four others.

Others mentioned in the suit are the Comptroller General (C-G), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS); Stanbic-IBTC Bank; United Bank of Africa (UBA) and Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc as 2nd to 5th respondents respectively.

Newsmen reports that the couple were, on June 23, remanded in the UK police custody, after they were arraigned before the Uxbridge Magistrate Court for alleged conspiracy to facilitate the travel of David Ukpo, alleged to be minor, for organ harvesting.

They, however, denied the allegations and the court adjourned till July 7 for a hearing.

Ekweremadu also appeared before the Uxbridge Magistrate Court on Thursday where he was denied a bail.
But in the originating summon, the duo prayed the court for an order directing all the defendants to supply them with the CTC of Ukpo’s biodata information in their care for the purpose of facilitating the criminal investigation and tendering same to establish their innocence with respect to Ukpo’s age in the criminal charges against them before the Uxbridge Magistrate Court.

When the matter was called, Awomolo informed the court that an application had been filed, seeking the order to strike out the name of the 5th defendant (Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc) and Justice Ekwo granted the prayer.

The senior lawyer told the court that all the defendants had been served with the court processes.
Justice Ekwo then asked the lawyer to the 4th defendant (United Bank of Africa), G. O. Maduka, if they were served and he responded in the affirmative.

According to him, after going through their motion on notice,, we felt we have no reaction to it.
Moving his motion, Awomolo said the application dated and filed on June 27 was supported by an affidavit and a written address.

“I respectfully adopted all the processes my lord,” he said.

Awomolo, however, called the attention of the court to letters written by the defendants, indicating that until his client’s application is granted by the court, “they will not be able to respond to their request.”

In a short ruling, the judge held that having been satisfied that the defendants had been served and looking at the averments in the application, “I make an order granting the prayers.”

  • EKWEREMADU: Immigration investigates organ donor’s passport

The Nigeria Immigration Service has said it is investigating the authenticity of the passport obtained by David Ukpo Nwanmini, who was alleged to have been trafficked to the United Kingdom for organ harvest by a former Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice.

The service, it was gathered, is probing allegations that the travel document may have been fraudulently procured.

The acting Comptroller-General of Immigration, Mr Idris Jere, confirmed the investigation on Saturday.

Ekweremadu, the senator representing Enugu West Senatorial District, was arrested by the UK Metropolitan Police on Tuesday with his wife, for conspiracy to harvest the organs of a minor.

Ekweremadu and his wife allegedly facilitated David’s entry into the UK to transplant his kidney into their daughter, Sonia, who is suffering from kidney failure.

    Ekweremadu

The couple was arraigned at the Uxbridge Magistrate Court in London on charges of conspiracy and organ harvest on Thursday.

The prosecutor disclosed that David is a 15-year-old boy, adding that he was not aware that he was in the UK to donate a kidney until he went for a hospital appointment with the Ekweremadus.

A trending picture of David’s passport, however, indicated that he was born on October 12, 2000. This means he is 21 years old.

The passport with number B00569974 was issued in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on November 5, 2021 and would expire on November 4, 2026.

Responding to inquiries on the controversy surrounding David’s passport, the CG said the service was probing the passport and would soon come out with its findings.

“We are investigating the passport and the issues surrounding it. We will come out with our findings soon,” Jere stated.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the letter which accompanied the visa application of David on December 28, 2021 showed Ekweremadu informed the UK authorities that he was taking the person abroad for a kidney transplant for his daughter.

The letter reads: “I am writing in support of the visa application made by Mr Ukpo Nwamini David who is currently having medical investigations for a kidney donation to Ms Sonia Ekweremadu.

“David and Sonia will be at the Royal Free Hospital London, and I will be providing the necessary funding. I have enclosed a statement of my bank account.”

Ekweremadu was arrested on June 23 over charges he tried to smuggle in a child to the UK for organ harvesting.

The Nigerian senator appeared in court on Thursday afternoon in London and was denied bail. His wife Beatrice is also standing trial for the same charges.

  • ORGAN HARVEST: How Ekweremadu tricked me to London- David Ukpo reveals

The victim of the organ harvest saga, David Ukpo, has made shocking revelations about how he was tricked to London by former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, to harvest his organs.

It would be recalled that Ekweremadu, and his wife, Beatrice, were arrested in London by the Metropolitan Police on Thursday and charged with the alleged crime of trying to bring a child to the UK to allegedly harvest organs.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) learned that the investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offenses under modern slavery legislation in May 2022.

On Friday, documents emerged which showed that the Ukpo, who was said to be a 15-year-old-child, may actually be 21 years.

A letter written by Ekweremadu also suggested that the lawmaker disclosed to the British embassy why he was taking David Ukpo to London.

However Ukpo denied any knowledge of why he was ferreted to the United Kingdom other than the promise of a good job and better life.

Ukpo narrated his side of the story in a Facebook post on Saturday, June 25, where he also posted his Visa page to back up his claims, even as Senator Ekweremadu and his wife remain in detention, having been denied bail by a London magistrates’ court where they were arraigned hours after their arrest on Thursday, June 23.

Titled “My journey to UK”, David Ukpo’s unedited post reads:

“On one fateful day I met a man named okoro in a building site where I was working for my daily bread, okoro told me he like me, he want to help me achieve my dream because he saw me as a great person. • Netizens condemn Peter Obi’s visit to Ekweremadu home after his arrest for organ harvest

Netizens have condemned the visit to the family home of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, by the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi , after his arrest in London for alleged organ harvest.

Obi, on Friday, via Twitter, posted: “My family and I are with the Ekweremadu’s over their travail. We join all men of goodwill in praying for the healing of their daughter and commit them into God’s hand for justice to be done, PO.”

    Netizens reaction

Cara, in her response, expressed shock, saying “For real? What he did is bad Oga… may that ur prayers never work. Justice must be served, that poor boy life would have been exchanged for Ike’s daughter, and it’s cos the boy is not from a wealthy family.”

Oyiha Micheal noted “You Don dey over do. Even Jesus change am for some guys once once. ”

Abiodun Sanusi, on his part, stated “This is not so cool, coming from a Presidential candidate. You don’t call the action of an alleged criminal ‘travail’. The fact that their daughter is sick shouldn’t be a reason for them to be involved in illegality. That young man whose organ was to be harvested is a human being.”

Daniel Regha, replying asserted “Peter Obi I get that u are trying to market urself as a people’s person, but ur sympathy towards Ike Ekweremadu seems very pretenti¤us & truth be told it makes n¤ sense cos this is someone who has been charged with child trafficking & organ harvesting; U need to tread carefully.”

A netizen, identified as Best Trader said “You know what, I support you, but I’m beginning to get irritated by this behaviour. We don’t want another Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in our hands, all playing Mr. Nice guy. If you read the story on the Ekweremandu’s, it boils around some1 possibly doing something wrong. You are…”

One Kay advised Obi to stay out of the matter, saying “Oga, you better stay out of it. Don’t you have a PR adviser? Jeez.”

  • Organ harvest: How the bubble burst on Ekweremadu, wife

Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu were on Thursday charged before the Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court in London, United Kingdom (UK).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Ekweremadu and Beatrice were charged for bringing in a 15-year-old boy [name withheld] to the UK with the claim that he was to be given a better life.

Prosecutors at the London court, however, narrated how the Ekweremadus allegedly maltreated the young boy, which led to their arrest.

According to the prosecutors, Senator Ekweremadu and Beatrice have a daughter, who has a kidney-related disease and has been on dialysis for quite some time.

Arise TV reported that the Ekweremadus then trafficked the 15-year-old boy from Lagos to the UK with the ulterior motive to harvest his organ.

They told the court that it is believed that the plan was to use an organ from the boy on their daughter who appears to need a kidney transplant.

The prosecutors at the court said the Ekweremadus brought the boy into the UK with the claim that he was to be given a better life but was actually to have his organ harvested.

Arise TV reports that according to the prosecutors, the Ekweremadus found the boy off the streets in Lagos, he was homeless and they brought him to the UK under the pretence of offering him a better life.

The prosecutors told the court that the former Deputy Senate President procured a passport for the boy and claimed he was 21 years old but they discovered that he was 15 years old.

The bubble burst after the boy truthfully disclosed his age, 15, to the doctors at the Royal Free Hospital in the UK.

TNG reports the doctors then cancelled the procedure and the boy was immediately taken into the custody of the family, who according to the prosecutors treated him like a slave until he escaped and found his way to the police, where an investigation started, leading to the arrest of the couple.

The couple was arrested at Heathrow airport, on their way to Istanbul, Turkey and according to the prosecutors, it is believed that they were on their way to procure another organ as they were unable to harvest the organ of the boy.

The prosecutors also stated that $20,000 cash was found on Mr Ekweremadu.

However, the defence counsel to Ekweremadu insisted that there was far more than meets the eye regarding the case.

Ekweremadu and his wife had separate legal representatives and prayed the court to release them on bail but their prayers were dismissed by the Magistrate.

After much deliberation, the Magistrate ordered their remand in custody till July 7 for the next hearing on the case.

TNG reports the couple has surrendered their passports to the UK government.
