My relationship with Tinubu caused me problems with Obasanjo – Orji Kalu

APC presidential aspirant, Orji Uzor Kalu, has revealed that he ran into problems with former President Olusegun Obasanjo due to his relationship with fellow aspirant, Bola Tinubu.

Kalu, who is the Senate Chief Whip, said his problem with Obasanjo started after he helped Tinubu win his re-election in 2003.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain disclosed that he stepped in to help Tinubu who was lagging behind in 2003.

Appearing on Silverbird Television on Friday, Kalu insisted that they are both not a threat to each others ambition.

He noted that they are very close friends, with their friendship deep-rooted.

According to Kalu: “So we are like a family and politics cannot separate us. In 2003 when Tinubu was seeking re-election and I saw that he was lagging behind, I assisted him and it’s part of what caused my problem with former President Obasanjo.

“So we’re a family and we cannot quarrel because of politics. He might have his idea on how to do it and I might have my own idea on how to do it.

“But all I know is that if we meet at Eagle Square, I will give a very good account of myself.”

Both Tinubu and Kalu have declared interest in the presidential ticket of the APC.

    Orji Kalu denies attacking Tinubu

The Chief Whip of Senate, Sen. Orji Kalu has exonerated himself from media reports that he allegedly attacked a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Bola Tinubu.

Kalu, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, stressed that he could never attack Tinubu.

The former governor of Abia, had in an interview said he was ready to match Tinubu grit for grit for the presidential ticket of the ruling APC.

Reacting to reports that he verbally attacked the former governor of Lagos State, Kalu said: “we can never attack Tinubu”.

He noted that his statement was intentionally misunderstood by few individuals who wanted to be in the news by spewing irrelevant words.

“I told Nigerians that I will contest against Tinubu if the ticket is zoned to the South. APC is a democratic party that allows every qualified member to vote and be voted for.

“It is not owned or managed by an individual. If I said I was going to contest against Tinubu, it doesn’t mean I attacked him. I cannot attack him for any reason.

“It is sad that few elements are trying to twist my statement to score cheap political goal. I am not distracted. My friendship with Tinubu is deep rooted and I am not quarrelling with him.

“I am not against his ambition of becoming the president. It is the choice of the party to determine who becomes the presidential candidate,” Kalu said.

Presidency: I will consider contesting if APC zones ticket to South-East – Orji Kalu

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Chief Whip of the Senate, Sen. Orji Kalu, says he will consider contesting for president if the All Progressives Congress (APC) zones its presidential ticket to the South-East region.

Kalu disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Tuesday after Christmas and New Year break.

NAN reports that many pro-democracy groups have endorsed Kalu and expressed their readiness to see that he emerges as the flag bearer of the APC in the 2023 presidential election.

Also the presidential campaign posters of the former Abia governor have been spotted in major cities in the country.

While commending the groups drumming support for him to vie for president in 2023, Kalu said that they found him worthy to deliver good governance to the nation.

He also reacted to his posters flooding major cities in Nigeria and said he had not made up his mind to contest.

“I want to continue to thank people who are putting up my posters all over Nigeria, I have not made up my mind whether to vie for president or not.

“But if opportunity is given to the South-East, I will think again to see if there is room because the party has not said where they are zoning the president to.

“But I know the party will bring a president who will work for the unity of the country which is more important,’’ Kalu said.

2023 and Kalu’s recipe for APC’s survival, By Ehichioya Ezomon

    By Ehichioya Ezomon
Will the All Progressives Congress (APC) implode in 2022, as consistently predicted by critics of the ruling party, and especially by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)?
The auguries look frightening for the APC that rode to power in 2015 on the back of citizens’ disenchantment and discontentment with the 16-year-PDP-controlled administration in Nigeria.
Ironically, the PDP, which again suffered defeat at the polls in 2019, seems riding on the wave of popular disillusionment with the APC, and taunts and forecasts the demise of the party in 2022.
Besides issues of governance that the PDP has marked down the APC government of President Muhammadu Buhari, the opposition party sees a silver lining in the series of crisis in the APC – old, and new problems that forced a change of its leadership in 2020.
The APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) came into being on June 25, 2020, on the shoulders of a divided party that escaped a humiliating defeat in the 2019 general election it’s primed to sweep.
Though the APC won majorities in the presidential, governorship and national and state legislative polls, it lost its strongholds in six states to the PDP due to the crises in the state chapters.
Topping the crises in the APC in 2019 was the legal ban of its Rivers State chapter from fielding candidates in the governorship and legislative elections, and the courts quashing of the party’s victories in equivalent elective positions in Zamfara State.
The APC chieftains that pushed for change of the party leadership had pinned those losses on the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC) that couldn’t reconcile aggrieved members in the aftermaths of bitterly-contested congresses and primaries in many states, leading to the polls.
Hence the Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni-headed caretaker committee was charged with resolving the crises in the APC state chapters, and organize congresses for a national convention.
After assuming office in June 2020, Governor Buni pledged to serve justice to all members, saying: “As a former two-term National Secretary, I know the party very well, and it’s all about doing justice to every member of the party. Without justice there won’t be peace. If you don’t manage crisis, obviously crisis will manage you.”
Very prophetic, as 18 months after, it’s only the committee members, and their palace-coup promoters that ascribe any iota of success in the two prioritized areas for the committee to attain!
If anything, the APC is more divided due to the 2021 congresses, which’ve produced new aggrieved members in the state chapters, to swell the spill-over rumblings from the 2019 electoral cycle.
In other words, the caretaker committee, whose tenure of six months has been extended twice, has failed to reconcile the disparate factions in APC, to enable a rancour-free convention.
Trailing the caretaker committee are frequent protests by APC members at the national headquarters in Abuja, emergence of splinter caretaker committees, and a litany of lawsuits.
The opposition from within and outside the APC is specifically directed at Governor Buni’s continued headship of the caretaker committee, for his alleged breach of provisions of the amended 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, and the constitution of the APC, both of which forbid concurrent holding of two executive positions.
On July 28, 2021, the Supreme Court, while delivering judgement in the appeal arising from the 2020 governorship poll in Ondo State, reinforced the potency of those constitutional provisions.
Even as the majority Justices of four gave judgment to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of the APC, the minority Justices of three ruled in favour of Chief Eyitayo Jegede of the PDP because the APC caretaker committee that signed, and presented the documents of the candidacy of Governor Akeredolu “has no basis in law.”
To members of the APC that are in the courts, seeking orders to dissolve, and/or strip Buni of the chairmanship of the caretaker committee, any election derived from the committee would be a nullity, for allegedly violating the Nigerian and APC constitutions.
While it’s on all fours with the submissions of the opposition within the APC, the PDP also craves to sack Buni from his position of governor of Yobe, as he’s reportedly yielded the seat by assuming a concurrent office of chairman of the APC caretaker committee.
So, Buni’s headship of the caretaker committee has become, with apologies to President Buhari, a case of, “If APC does not remove Buni as its chairman, Buni will remove APC as a political party.”
The former is the prayer of genuine APC members, and the latter the hope of “fifth columnists” in the APC, and the PDP, which would delight in the self-ruination that the APC is gambling with!
Rather than seek to douse tension via a “family solution” to the plethora of lawsuits against it, the caretaker committee has hired a legion of Senior Advocates of Nigeria to defend it in several cities, thus hardening positions, and divisions in the APC ahead of its national convention in the first week of February 2022.
Concerned members aver that desirable as the national convention is, holding it without first appreciably settling the internal disputes would further divide the party to the point of imploding.
That scary scenario has prompted the Chief Whip of the Senate and former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, to pen a letter to Governor Buni, and members of the caretaker committee, to consider postponing the February national convention.
Senator Kalu warns that holding the convention in February, without sorting out the “minor disagreements” that arose during the congresses in the states, would lead to an implosion of the APC.
“Some states are embroiled in crisis with multiple factions, and it is important to put into consideration the consequences of these factions during and after elections,” Kalu urges.
He says it would be devastating to continue with the convention without settling the differences in various states and, “sort out the issues of zoning, which cannot be addressed in two months.”
Senator Kalu, who proposes a simultaneous conduct of the presidential primary and election of members of the NWC on the same day and venue, “to avoid rancour and litigation,” stresses the importance of postponing the convention, “with all peace and reconciliation machinery fully put in place.”
Will the caretaker committee, glorying in its luring of opposition chieftains into APC, consider Senator Kalu’s plea to postpone the February national convention, give itself a breather to reconcile aggrieved members, and prevent the party from imploding?
Or will the APC continue to vent its counter-attacking on the PDP, which it’s vowed, illusorily, can’t return to power because “the voters are intelligent and know that the PDP, going by its antecedents, has nothing to offer Nigerians?”
The answer is either retaining the Buni caretaker committee, to conduct the APC national convention in February 2022, or dissolve and replace the committee, and organize the convention on a later date, and save the party from debilitating heartaches in 2023.

‘Unsolicited Visit’: Orji Kalu cannot be trusted; we’ll hold him, DSS responsible if anything happens to Nnamdi Kanu in detention – IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has raised alarm over the life of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu following what it termed unsolicited visit of former Abia Governor, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu to him at the DSS custody.
The lawmaker on Monday visited the pro-Biafran group leader.
IPOB, in a statement by the Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said it was not comfortable with Kalu’s visit, warning that he should be held responsible if anything happens to its leader.
It also said those who permitted him to see its leader would as well be held accountable.
The statement reads: “We the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the command and leadership of our great leader Mazi Nnamdi KANU is raising alarm over the unsolicited visit of Orji Uzor Kalu to our leader wherever he is detained.

“We don’t know the mission of Orji Uzor Kalu over the visits and we are worried. We therefore, wish to put the world on notice that Orji Uzor Kalu will be held responsible for whatever happens to our leader Mazi Nnamdi KANU in detention.
“We are not comfortable with Orji Uzor Kalu’s suspicious visits to our leader. We don’t know whose interest he protects. We will also hold responsible, those who permitted him to see our leader in detention.
“The DSS allowed him access against court order which all visitors including Kanu’s lawyers comply with. We all knew that Orji Uzor Kalu’s name is among those who bankrolled and sponsored the extraordinary rendition of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria.”

Alleged fraud: Court upholds withdrawal of Orji Kalu’s university certificate

A court of appeal sitting in Owerri, the Imo State capital, has upheld the withdrawal of the Bachelors’ degree certificate of former Governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Uzo Kalu, by the Abia State University.

The presiding judge, Justice Oludotun Adefope-Okojie, on Tuesday, thereby, nullified the judgement of a high court in Isikwuato, Abia State which had restored the Bachelors’ degree certificate of the former governor.

In 2018, the Abia State University withdrew Senator Kalu’s certificate over allegations of fraud and breach of admission regulations concerning his graduation.

But the former governor later approached a state high court in Isikuato in Abia State challenging the allegations and the subsequent withdrawal of his degree by the university.

The appeal court’s decision on Tuesday was on the grounds that the state high court in Isikwuato lacked jurisdiction over the matter.

What I discussed with Nnamdi Kanu in DSS custody – Orji Kalu

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Uzor Kalu, has advised the embattled leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to consider the consequences of some of his actions.

Kalu made the call on Monday when he paid a visit to Kanu who has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja.

In a post on his official Facebook page, the former governor of Abia State said, “I understand that Nnamdi has an insane amount of people rooting for him back home and I encouraged him to consider the consequences of certain actions and utterances for the sake of the same people”.

“Even though my ideology and his ideology are totally different, God has made us brothers and we can’t run away from each other.

“I owe him and Nigerians good counseling …Whether he and his family listen to me or not, I will continue counseling him as I have always done in the past. What we need most is a peaceful and secure society,” Kalu declared.

The lawmaker while disclosing that the IPOB leader was in good health, however, did not reveal what the IPOB leader’s remark or reactions were.

Senator Kalu’s visit comes a few weeks after President Muhammadu Buhari promised to consider requests for the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

President Buhari made the pledge when he met with a group of leaders from the South East under the aegis of Highly Respected Igbo Greats.

He, however, noted that the plea for Kanu’s release is an extremely difficult demand on him as leader of this country.

According to the president, “the implication” is very serious. An unconditional release of Kanu, who is standing trial, according to the President, runs contrary to the doctrine of separation of powers between the executive and judiciary.

Stressing his policy of non-interference with the Judiciary, he said when Kanu jumped bail, got arrested, and was brought back to the country.

“I said the best thing was to subject him to the system,” Buhari added.

President Buhari further stated that Kanu should go make his case in court instead of giving very negative impressions of the country from outside.

Why northern youths are supporting me for 2023 presidency – Orji Kalu

The Chief Whip of the Senate. Sen. Orji Kalu, on Friday in Abuja, said that northern groups were drumming support for him to vie for president in 2023 because they found him worthy to deliver good governance to the nation.

Kalu, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said that credibility, honesty and the capacity to deliver endeared him to many northerners.

NAN recalls that recently a coalition of northern groups under the auspices of Arewa Youths drummed support for the chief whip of the senate to become the next president of the country.

The coalition described him as a presidential material with experience in the private sector, executive and legislative arms of government.

The Arewa youths also urged the ruling All Progressives Congress to commence a process of adopting him as the sole candidate of the party.

They stressed that Kalu’s managerial skill, experience and national appeal put him in the best position to rule Nigeria in 2023.

According to Kalu, the feelings that I am loved in the north is not by accident.

“What is responsible for that, is that I have known most of the presidents from the north for a long time, and I have had deep relationships, and am not sure I have disappointed in any of these relations.

“And I have also known many northerners, and I have had so many businesses with them, I had to do politics with them and in terms of business, I am not sure I have disappointed anybody in terms of buying and selling.

    “I have always been myself.

“They find me worthy because they know whatever I say, I will do, and whatever I say I will not do, I will not do it.

“The northerners find out that I am sincere to them, and they are sincere to me.

“So, for people who gave me opportunity to be their brother at no cost when I was nothing, and when I am somebody, is it good to leave them? The answer is no.

“ I cannot leave them because I started with them, and I think staying with them is better than abandoning them, when I feel I am better,’’ Kalu said.

Orji Kalu wants Gernot Rohr sacked as Super Eagles coach

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Uzor Kalu, has called for the sack of Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr.

Kalu in a post on his official Facebook page told the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to sack Rohr over poor performance

He stated that Nigerian soccer lovers don’t need further dissatisfaction from Rohr adding that he is not a good coach.

Kalu said, “In the last five years, we have wasted our time in football. There is nothing new we are doing any longer. To see a country with many professional players home and abroad struggling to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup is heartbreaking. Gernot Rohr is not a good coach and I don’t understand why he is still managing Super Eagles.”

The Senator further revealed that Rohr had applied to become Enyimba’s coach when he was Governor but he denied him the opportunity.

”He was brought to Nigeria by Oscar Udoji but I refused to employ him.

“I am calling on the Chairman of NFF, Mr. Amaju Pinnick to wake up and to quickly find a replacement for Rohr. We, soccer lovers, don’t need further dissatisfaction in a game, we have the capacity to make ourselves proud.”

Kalu added that If Rohr has the same problem while coaching every year then he is not a leader.

”You are rather a problem on your own that must be solved,” he added.

This is coming less than two days after Nigeria played a 1-1 draw with Cape Verde in a World Cup qualifier in Lagos.

Rohr was appointed Super Eagles manager in 2016.
