  • Saxophonist Orlando Julius buried, as veteran musicians pay tribute

    Saxophonist Orlando Julius has been buried, as veteran musicians, Yinka Davies, Tony Okoroji, Tee Mac Omatshola, Dede Mabiaku and filmmaker, Tunde Kelani, pay tribute to him.

     

    Julius, who died at 79, was buried on Saturday, in Ijebu-Ijesha area of Osun State.

     

    Tee Mac performed alongside Yinka Davies and David Iyiola Timileyin during the church service and he also shared moments from the service on Instagram.

     

    In a short tribute to Orlando, the flutist wrote: “Saturday May 28th was the goodbye day of Chief Dr. Julius Aremu Orlando Julius. I had the honor to perform with Yinka Davies (voice!) and David Iyiola Timileyin, keyboard during the church service.

     

    “Orlando Julius will be missed but like every superstar, he left many great compositions and recordings behind which have established his legacy. Rest in perfect peace Orlando Julius.”

     

    Tunde Kelani also posted photos from the service of songs held the previous day.

     

    Born in Ikole in Ekiti State, Julius was a native of Ijebu-Ijesha in Osun State.

     

    He was a contemporary of the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, even claiming that the latter learned to play the saxophone because of him.

    Orlando relocated to the United States of America in 1974 where he met his Chicago-born wife through Ambrose Campbell.

     

    The couple returned to Nigeria in the late 90s, settling in Lagos before moving to Ilesa.

     

    Julius was born on 22 September 1943 and died 14 April 2022.

     

    Apart from being a saxophonist, he was a singer, bandleader, and songwriter closely associated with Afrobeat music.

     

    The veteran musician began by playing drums or flute with juju and konkoma bands and learned saxophone to play highlife music, eventually playing with musicians Jazz Romero, Rex Williams, and Eddie Okonta.

     

    He began experimenting with combining traditional music with horns, guitar, and American genres, a fusion which came to be known as afrobeat.

     

    Julius had his first hits with 1965’s “Jagua Nana” and the 1966 album Super Afro Soul. In the 1970s, Julius moved to the United States, forming a band with Hugh Masekela and later working as a session musician before returning to Nigeria in 1984.

    Orlando Julius died in my arms – Wife reveals

    Wife of late veteran highlife musician, Orlando Julius Ekemode, Latoya Aduke has said that her late husband gave his last breath peacefully in her arms.

    According to Latoya, the veteran musician passed on Thursday night naturally in his home in Ilesha, Osun State.

    Speaking on the phone, Latoya said, “Orlando has gone oh,” and she sobbed.

    “He died in my arms at night. I thank the Lord,” she wept in the phone conversation with Tribune Online.

    The musician, aged 78 years, had been hale and hearty for some years, but inactive to perform live since 2020.

    Orlando Julius Aremu Olusanya Ekemode, known professionally as Orlando Julius or Orlando Julius Ekemode is dead.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Orlando, a native of Ijebu Ijesha succumbed to the cold hands of death and breathed his last few hours ago at the age of 79.

    Bimbo Esho of Evergreen Music Company Limited confirmed the death of the highlife singer on Friday.

    According to her, wife of Orlando, Lady Latoya was the one who messaged her to inform her of the passing of the veteran highlife singer.

    “Bimbo Daddy Has Passed On… This was the message I stumbled on waking up at exactly 3am to peruse my watsapp page.. It was a message sent in to me by Orlando Julius beautiful and supportive wife Lady Latoya.

    “Orlando Julius a native of Ijebu Ijesha succumbed to the cold hands of death and breathed his last few hours ago at the age of 79.

    “We shall miss one of Nigeria’s fathers of Afro/Highlife Music , a gentleman and a fine Saxophonist.

    “May daddy Orlando Julius soul journey well . To the entire Ekemode family may God give you the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss,” Bimbo wrote on her official Facebook page.

    TNG reports Orlando was born in 1943 in Ikole, Nigeria to a merchant family during British colonialism.

    Popular Nigerian Saxophonist, Orlando Julius has died at the age of 79.

    His wife, Latoya Ekemode, confirmed his death to newsmen on Friday in Lagos.

    She said that Orlando Julius passed out in his sleep on Thursday night.

    “Yes, my husband passed on late last night, there was no indication that death was coming, he was not ill, he only slept and died in his sleep,” she said.

    Newsmen reports that Orlando Julius, was a Nigerian saxophonist, singer, band leader, and songwriter closely associated with afrobeat music.

    Some of his musical albums were: Disco Hi-Life, Ololufe, Love, Peace and Happiness; Dance Afrobeat and more.
