BREAKING: Lagos coroner clears Dowen College of Oromoni’s death, indicts parents, doctors

The Lagos State coroner inquest instituted to unravel the cause of the death of Sylvester Oromoni, a 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, has revealed that he died a natural death.

The Lagos coroner, Magistrate Mikhail Kadiri, stated in a 255-page judgement, on Monday, that the student’s death was avoidable.

Kadiri attributed the death to parental and doctors negligence.

He, however, commiserated with the family and their friends.

“I pray that God comfort you for this great loss and make things easy for your family,” he said.

Sylvester died on November 30, 2021, as a result of alleged bully and poisoning in the school.

  • Oromoni: No request to test blackish substance found on deceased – Toxicologist

Oromoni: No request to test blackish substance found on deceased – Toxicologist

A Police Toxicologist, Dr Benedict Agbo, Benedict Agbo, on Tuesday said he received no request to test the blackish substance found on the late 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Sylvester Oromoni Jnr.

Agbo stated this while being cross-examined by counsel to the Oromoni’s family, Mr Femi Falana (SAN).

The witness said that the black substance found in the intestines of the deceased in the second autopsy, was not given to him for examination.

Blackish substance was found in the second autopsy conducted by Dr Sokunle Soyemi, a pathologist with the Lagos State Teaching University Hospital (LASUTH).

It was believed to have contained a chemical intoxication that was allegedly forced down the throat of the school boy by some senior pupils at Dowen College that led to his death.

Falana asked the witness if any blackish substance was sent to the witness for any examination from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

He replied, “No, I did not get any request. I did not carry out test on the blackish substance.”

Agbo, who had worked with the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for 25 years, noted that he was contacted by the Police Area Commander in Warri, Delta, that an autopsy was going to be done on the deceased.

He said that after the autopsy was carried out, he discussed it with the pathologist in the state, Dr Clement Vhriterhire, and received some samples for chemical analysis.

He said the samples sent to him were tagged: A (containing cake dark brown labelled heart blood), B (containing greyish liquid substance labelled stomach content) and C (sample note containing greyish brown mass of flesh labelled liver) and a sample bottle containing light reddish coloured liquid labelled fluid from the eye.

The witness, who affirmed he was the one who suggested to the pathologist in Warri what to send to him, said he carried out the physical examination at the microscopic level.

Agbo also said that it was normal to use clotted blood for toxicology when he was asked by Falana.

According to the witness, the Police laboratory in Alagbon, commissioned in 1997, is a functional laboratory for toxicology.

“In other words, yours is the only functional toxicology in Nigeria?,” Falana asked.

“I will not say that because the equipment sometimes breaks down and some people are called to fix it,” the witness replied.

The witness also said that he would have to go back and take stock when Falana asked him about the condition of the equipment from November 2021 to date.

Agbo, who said there was equipment for testing poisons, stressed that the functionality of a toxicology laboratory did not depend on the equipment but on the expertise.

“I used solvent and solid extraction procedures in testing the samples,” he said.

“You will agree with me therefore that if the biochemical assay has not been carried out, you cannot conclusively say that your report is final?,” Falana asked.

“No, I cannot say that because a biochemical assay is to know if the liver, heart and other vital organs were functioning very well before the cessation of life,” the witness replied.

The Coroner, Mr Mikhail Kadiri, thereafter, adjourned proceedings until April 11 for continuation of hearing.

It was alleged by the Oromoni family that the 12-year-old student died on Nov. 30, 2021, from injuries sustained in an attack by five senior students of Dowen College for refusing to join a cult.

It was also alleged that he was forced to drink a substance by his attackers.

Advice by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) released on Jan. 4, however, disputed the allegations.

It stated that an autopsy revealed the cause of the student’s death as acute bacterial pneumonia due to severe sepsis.

Dowen College: Suspect’s mother denies son’s involvement in Oromoni’s death

Mother of one of the suspects of Sylvester Oromoni murder, in Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos State, Edward Brown, has denied his involvement in the attack.

Ms Oluchi Sunday, mother of Brown and a student of Dowen College, has taken to social media to deny her son’s involvement in the alleged attack on Sylvester Oromoni and seek for apologies.

Sylvester, 11, died on Nov. 30, after he was allegedly attacked by some of his seniors in Dowen College, Lekki.

Since his death made news, Edward Brown is one of the names he reportedly called before he passed away.

Edward’s mum, Ms Sunday, has now released a statement denying her son’s involvement in the unfortunate incident.

According to her, Edward is a day student and wasn’t on the school premises on the day Sylvester was attacked.

“It has come to my attention that some individuals caused rumours to be peddled on social media platforms.

“Suggesting that my son, Edward Brown, is one of the students allegedly involved in the beating of the late Oromoni Jr at a Dowen College hostel, which resulted in his untimely death.

“To set the record straight, I wish to bring the following facts to the public notice, which demonstrate that such rumours are false, malicious and lack any basis whatsoever:

“My son is a day student and has never been a boarder and he was not on the school premises at the time when the unfortunate incident occurred, precisely on the night of Nov. 21.

“The said day was a weekend and so, my son could not have been in the hostel as alleged,’’ she said.

In a social media post made on Nov. 1, on the deceased’s elder brother’s Instagram page, “greatoromonii”, five names, including Dowen College were mentioned before the conclusion.

“Just know he called your names before he died”. My son’s name was not among those names.

“As a result of these false and malicious rumours, my son and I have been under constant attack via social media, with insults and threats being hurled at us daily.

“This has caused us much emotional distress and mental trauma.

“Therefore, on behalf of myself and my son, Edward Brown, I hereby demand that managers of social media and other platforms where the false and libellous rumours are circulating immediately retract the offending posts and tender a public apology to us.

“We commiserate with the Oromini family for the tragic loss of Sylvester Oromini Jr and pray for the repose of his soul,’’ she said.
