  • Ortom’s appeal holds no water, we’ll commence strike Sept 5 – Labour

The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress in Benue have rejected Gov. Samuel Ortom’s appeal against a one-week warning strike proposed to start September 5.

The warning strike is the first step by the workers who have declared a labour dispute with the state government over the non-payment of salaries.

The workers, in a communique jointly signed by the NLC Chairman, Mr Godwin Anya and his TUC counterpart, Mr Ordue Tartenger, declared that the governor’s appeal was “unacceptable”.

“His appeal is predicated on the prevailing economic situation, but the state has not stopped receiving statutory allocations from the federation account. This is besides the Internally Generated Revenue and other revenue receipts from the federal government.

“He appealed for understanding without any offer; other allocations from the federal government and other revenue sources are still available to the government.

“Supplementary support keeps coming from the Federal Government under various sub-heads – bailout, stabilization, Paris Club refunds, among others,” the workers said.

The unions, therefore, declared Tuesday, September 5 – Wednesday, September 13 for the strike, and advised the government to implement the state of emergency it declared on payment of salaries, gratuities and pensions.

Reacting, the Special Adviser to Ortom on Media and ICT, Mr Tahav Agerzua, said that the governor “placed all the cards on the table before the labour leaders”.

He opined that the strike was not the solution because it would not bring the money needed to pay the salaries and arrears being demanded.

The Benue workers are owed eight months salaries, with Ortom saying that N40bn was required to settle them.

  • As long as Buhari is sick, Nigerians are also sick – Ortom

…Urges Nigerians not to stop praying for president’s full recovery

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has said the fragile health of President Muhammadu Buhari is an indication that Nigeria and indeed her citizens are sick and need serious prayers.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Governor Ortom was among the seven state governors that visited the ailing President recently at the Abuja House in London.

Other members of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) delegation led by the governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, were Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Kashim Shettima (Borno) and Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom).

Speaking to State House correspondents in Abuja on Thursday, he said rather than castigate Buhari for his ailment, Nigerians should, therefore, pray for him.

He said: “I will say halleluyah because God has answered my prayers. I was the first person that initiated prayers, both Christians and Muslims to pray for Mr. President because that is our duty.

“Romans 13:1 and 2 talks about that there is no power that be without God’s ordination and those of us who are subjects should continue to pray for such.

“So, it is our responsibility not to be castigating Mr. President or be wishing him or whatever. We should be praying for him.

“If Mr. President is sick, it means all of us are sick, the whole country is sick. So, its is our responsibility to pray that Mr. President gets well so that our country too will be well.”

Ortom reiterated that governors who met Buhari recently advised him to stay back in the United Kingdom for more rest until his doctors certify him well enough to return home.

It is nearly 90 days since the President left the shores on Nigeria for the United Kingdom to attend to an undisclosed ailment.

Ortom added: “Mr. President is doing well, we appreciate God, we saw him, he was not in a wheel chair, he was not bedridden, he greeted us, we cracked jokes and he was mentally alert.

“We discussed the security situations in the country and asked us questions about what we are doing.

“Our prayer is that God will consummate his healing. We asked him not to hurry because there is no vacuum, the Acting President is holding forth for him and he is doing very well and he has his confidence. By the grace of God I believe that very soon he will be with us.”

The governor said that the NGF delegation was happy to meet the president in high spirit as he was jovial, not on a wheelchair or bedridden as had been speculated on some quarters.

He recalled that an excited Buhari inquired about affairs in their various states, adding that it was indeed a sign that God has answered the prayers of Nigerians.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that President Buhari traveled for medical check-up in London on Sunday, May 7, more than a month he came back into the country from a previous medical vacation.

  • Ortom denies operating snake farm, says ‘I’ve spent N31m treating victims of snake bite ’

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, on Tuesday, denied allegations making the rounds that he operates snake farm.

The governor noted that instead, he had been saving the lives of those bitten by snakes.

Ortom further disclosed that rather than inflicting pains on people through his alleged snake farm, he had incurred N31m within three months treating victims of snake bites.

He, however, said there was nothing wrong for anybody to go into any kind of farming, including snake farming, which the constitution permits.

His denial is coming on the heels of a report alleging that the governor owns snakes farm at his Oracle Farm along Naka Road, Makurdi; and that the consignment intercepted last week by the Nigerian Customs in Calabar belonged to him.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Federal Government on Friday said it has commenced investigations to uncover the importers of the three consignments containing 140 species of snakes and 660 other animals imported into Nigeria from Cameroon on July 26.

The governor, who briefed newsmen after his return from a two-week leave in the United Kingdom, denied the allegation.

He added that he received a divine mandate 20 years ago to assist victims of snake bites who cannot afford to pay for their treatment and that he had been doing that, culminating in his spending of N31m in three months this year alone.

He added that he runs a foundation that was specifically established to cater for the poor and peasant farmers in the rural areas that are bitten by snakes but have no means of treatment.

Ortom further disclosed that he had decided to retain St. Theresa and Rahama Hospitals, Makurdi, where people who are bitten by snakes go for treatment, stating that over one million people have so far received treatment in the two hospitals for various degree of snake bites.

He lamented that snakes have become a burden to the state and that if he had the power, he would have killed all the snakes across the state; adding that in the last three months, he had incurred N31m on treatment of victims of snake bites.

“As at June ending when the management of St. Theresa Hospital, Makurdi, brought the accumulated bills of three months to me, I had incurred N31m for treating victims of snake bites.

“People should rather encourage someone who is committed to saving lives,” Ortom said.

He also said he had detailed the state’s Attorney General, Mike Gusa, to investigate the report.

Ortom made this disclosure at an interactive session with journalists in Makurdi.

The governor said that he would have to seek God’s face before knowing whether or not to contest the 2019 election.

According to him, he is a product of a divine intervention and he always relies on God in everything he wants to embark on.

”It was God that told me that I would be governor of Benue someday, it is not my making but purely the handiwork of God,” he said.

  • Anti-grazing law: I was elected to preside over living souls, not dead people – Ortom

…says ‘Fulani herdsmen threatening me over law’

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Wednesday, said that he had received threats from suspected Fulani herdsmen over the anti-grazing law recently enacted by his administration.

Ortom stated this when he addressed the members of the National Council of Tiv Youths, who protested to the Government House, Makurdi, over what they described as unguided utterances by the leadership of Fulani herdsmen against the Tiv nation.

The governor, who said he would not be intimidated by the threats coming from the Fulani, maintained that the law had come to stay and that the full implementation of the law would commence by November at the latest.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that as a way of finding long lasting solution to the recurring herdsmen attack, Ortom had a few weeks ago, assented to the anti-open grazing bill passed by the state assembly, which prohibited open grazing of livestock.

The law provides that anyone, who engages in open grazing in Benue State, will, upon conviction, be liable to five-year imprisonment.

It also provides monetary compensation to victims whose farms or properties are damaged by cattle.

Also, a two-year imprisonment awaits anyone whose cattle inflict injury on anyone in the state.

The governor said the enactment of the law became imperative following the constant attacks on farmers in the state by suspected Fulani herdsmen, adding that he had the constitutional responsibility to protect the lives and property of residents of his state.

He said, “Just this morning (Wednesday), one Fulani called my wife and asked her to warn me that I am joking with them, but my response when my wife told me this was that, ‘I am not joking, this law has come to stay’.

I challenge anyone who has a superior solution to the senseless killings of our people other than anti-open grazing law to bring it forward. Before the passage of the bill by the House of Assembly, due process was followed, every nationality living in the state – the Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa/Fulani and others – was invited for the public hearing.

Whoever chooses to live in Benue must obey the law of the land; there is no grazing in Benue. I was elected to protect the lives and property of every resident of the state, not to preside over dead people.”

Meanwhile, Ortom has called for the immediate resignation of the Federal Commissioner, Public Complaints Commission in charge of Benue State, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, for allegedly abdicating his duties.

The governor, who spoke through his Special Adviser on Media and ICT, Tarhav Agerzua, at a press conference held in Makurdi, said the call was necessitated by a recent high court judgment in the state.

He insisted Tsav should resign his position as a federal commissioner and join politics so that he could face politicians on the political turf.

Tarhav said that Tsav’s conduct so far indicated that he had abdicated his responsibilities and descended into the political arena.

He said, “I am calling on Tsav to honourably resign his appointment with the Public Complaint Commission where he is serving as a commissioner in Benue State because he has been using his office to attack Governor Ortom.

As an ombudsman, he is expected to be fair on all issues before him, but he has chosen to be partisan; we expect him to resign and join politics.”

The governor’s spokesman disclosed that a state high court presided over by Justice Maurice Ikpambese had ordered Tsav to pay N10m as damages to Mr. Abrahams Kwaghngu, the Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties to Ortom, for libel.

Reacting, Tsav said being a public complaints commissioner notwithstanding, he would continue to criticise corruption, nepotism and injustice.

He said his duty was not to team up with any government to perpetrate injustice.

  • Idol worshipping, ungodliness, witchcraft reigned in Suswam’s govt – Ortom

Idol worshipping, ungodliness, witchcraft reigned in Suswam’s govt – Ortom

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has said his administration inherited idol worshippers, ungodly and promiscuous people when it came on board in 2015.

The governor however noted that two years down the line, his administration has worked untiringly to purge the state of such people.

Ortom revealed this in his second anniversary speech.

According to him, “Ladies and gentlemen at the time we took over. There was poor security of lives and property in Benue State. Government business was sluggish

“Corruption and brazen embezzlement of funds was so obvious that it could be seen and touched.

“Lying was the language of governance. Wild parties, orgies, ungodliness, witchcraft, and idol worshipping was common and Government House was desecrated with all forms of ungodliness.

“Government of Benue literarily became a sea of political appointees with over 500 Special/Senior Special Assistants, 30 Advisers, 17 Commissioners together with a litany of praise singers.

“The biggest challenge we inherited was insecurity. Citizens were attacked by hoodlums day and night. Big markets in Tivland like Ihugh, Adikpo, Zaki Biam, Tor-Donga and Aliade were closing down because hoodlums used to snatch money from traders who sold their wares at such markets.

“Primary school teachers were on strike for about one year. Quality of education nose-dived because teachers were on strike at all levels of our educational system.”

  • Wheelbarrow comment: Ortom blasts Mark, says ‘He has nothing to show for 20 years in Senate’

Sequel to former Senate President, David Mark’s comparison of the performance of Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State to that of his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike, Ortom through his Chief Press Secretary, has reacted saying the former Senate President was disconnected with reality and developments happenings in the state

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Mark on Tuesday mocked Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom for distributing wheelbarrows as part of his empowerment scheme for youths in the state.

According to a report by Leadership, Akase said the former Senate president is now bitter because he did not make any impact as number three in the nation for eight years and a sitting senator for eighteen years.

According to Akase: “We listened to the comments made by the Senator representing Benue South Senatorial district, David Mark, at a function in Port Harcourt where he compared developments in Rivers and Benue states.

“Mark accused Governor Samuel Ortom of ‘giving out wheelbarrows to empower people’ when, according to him, other states are commissioning projects.

“We do not intend to belabour the issue of wheelbarrows which we have already made clarification that the carts were donated by the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, NCFRMI, for victims of armed herdsmen attacks in the state. ”Perhaps only Senator David Mark is not aware of this fact.

“Mark’s statements smack of a man who has obviously been disconnected with the very people who voted him.

”His utterances also exude envy against Governor Ortom who is succeeding where Mark has failed. ”In Benue South which Senator Mark represents, the Ortom administration has embarked on a number of projects for the people.

“Agatu which is a local government area under David Mark’s senatorial district affected by herdsmen attacks is today peaceful owing to the security initiatives of Governor Ortom. ‘’ The people of the area have not hidden their joy and have been appreciating the Governor for ensuring the return of peace.

”We are not aware of any effort Mark has made to curb the crisis as a serving senator representing the people of that part of the state.

“Senator Mark certainly owes the people of Benue South an explanation on why the Otukpo-Enugu federal highway is still a death trap after many years that the contract was awarded by the government.

“Mark used the road project and his perennial promise for the creation of Apa state as campaign lullabies just to ensure his return to the red chamber of the senate on five occasions.

“It is rather unfortunate that Mark has failed to see the deliberate underdevelopment of the state by the government of his political party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, particularly the part of the state which he has represented as senator for nearly 20 years. “Township roads in Otukpo where Mark lives anytime he is in the state were abandoned by the PDP administration with Senator Mark doing nothing for as many years.
