Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue, on Tuesday confirmed an attack on Abagena Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Makurdi by suspected herdsmen, that left seven persons dead and many others injured.

Ortom stated this when he visited the camp, where the IDPs were already protesting the attack by blocking the Makurdi-Lafia road.

The governor said that the attacks were becoming unacceptable.

He also said that more than 70 people were killed in Guma, Makurdi and Gwer West local government areas (LGAs), of the state in the last two weeks.

“You have all seen what is happening within the last two weeks. We have lost over 70 people in Guma, Makurdi and Gwer West LGAs alone, in addition to what you have seen here.

“Many are in the hospital apart from the seven that were killed. But I want to say that our patience is being overstretched in spite of our preaching of rule of law and due process. You can see that the people are fed up.’’

Ortom urged President Muhammadu Buhari, to take full responsibility of the security challenges facing the country as he is the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces.

He also called on other governors to wake up and impress on the president to address the country on the ongoing insecurity in the country.

“Mr President must rise up; he is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He has taken oath of office to secure and protect lives and property.

“This (attack) is not acceptable, this cannot continue. Mr President must rise up and address the nation.

“My colleagues, the governors must rise and impress on the President to call a security submit, if possible to declare a state of emergency on security so that all hands will be on deck to address the situation in the country,’’ he said.

Nigeria full of ‘lily-livered’ people masquerading as leaders but can’t confront FG on nation’s challenges – Ortom

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has declared that Nigeria is populated with ‘lily-livered’ people masquerading as leaders but cannot confront the Federal Government on the many challenges bedeviling the country.

He said as long as leaders are not willing to stick out their necks to speak against the many ills in the country, Nigeria will continue to remain underdeveloped.

He spoke on Thursday in Abuja on “Insecurity in Nigeria, Restoring peace, unity and progress” at a lecture organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the FCT Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) to mark the 2021 press week.

The Governor said Nigeria is full of those he described as “lily livered people” masquerading as national and regional leaders.

According to him: “I have learnt from my experience that Nigeria has critical deficit of sustainable leadership. We seem to have a dearth of bold and courageous leaders who will clearly identify with what is good, and loudly tell the nation.

“We have a lot of lily-livered people who masquerade as national and regional leaders in this country but are afraid to speak and advise the Federal Government correctly.

“Many leaders have confided in me that our position on ranching of livestock and Rule of Law to ensure justice, fairness and equity are good, not only for Benue State but for Nigeria as a whole. But they cannot speak publicly to support it.

“Where then are our elder statesmen and women? Where are our political leaders who will speak out loudly instead of whispering in closets on crucial and critical national issues, including an existential challenge such as the herdsmen sack and pogrom of entire villages and communities in Benue State and other parts of the country?”

The Governor alleged kidnapping has become another lucrative business with strong suspicion of connivance with government officials, adding that “the rise in kidnappings of all categories of people across the country is a dangerous trend.

He challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to eschew favouritism and work for the interest of all Nigerians.

Ortom drops bombshell after meeting Buhari, ‘there will be no election in 2023 if insecurity persists’

The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has said that if the insecurity challenges in the country persist, the 2023 elections will not hold.

Governor Ortom stated this on Tuesday when he visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

He thanked the President for condemning the attack on his farm but said: “that there will be no 2023 elections in Nigeria if insecurity persists”.

Briefing journalists after meeting with the President, Governor Ortom disclosed that the nation is sitting on a keg of gun powder without meaningful progress being made on the issue of security.

Speaking on the protection of the constitution, Ortom appealed for the provisions of the constitution to be protected to enable equity, fairness, and justice in the country.

He criticized the issue of impunity in the country which he said has been allowed to fester, thereby urging the Federal Government to immediately prosecute anyone found culpable of breaching the law.

On the question of reports alleging that attacks on his convoy was a pseudo claim, the Governor explicitly appealed to everyone not to politicize the issue of attempted assassination on his person.

He made the emphasis that the attack on his convoy by about 15 gunmen suspected to be herdsmen, while on a visit to his farm was not stage-managed.

While asserting that he has not done anything wrong in enacting an anti-open grazing law beneficial to the state, he said the demand by the cattle breeders association, Miyetti Allah to repel the law would be impossible to fulfill, because it went through due process, hence the matter is clearly beyond him.

He prayed that what happened to him would not be experienced by anyone else.

The governor commended other governors, colleagues for standing by him during the attack.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that gunmen suspected to be herdsmen last Saturday attacked Governor Ortom at Tyo Mu along Makurdi/Gboko road in Makurdi Local Government Area of the state.

Ortom, who described the gunmen as ‘herdsmen’, said about 15 of the attackers trailed him to the river bank where he was on foot.

The governor praised his security details that were just about six in number for responding quickly to the attack and repelled them promptly before providing cover for him to return to safety and his vehicle.

“My lawyer is going to make a petition against the leadership of MACBAN because they came out to target me and behind the scene, they are planning to eliminate me on my own land,” he said.

“If I can’t go to the farm as governor with entire security around me then who else can go to the farm? You can imagine the pains that we have here in Benue State.

“I appreciate the security personnel attached to me they were able to repel them and they could not have access to me,” Ortom stated.

Three suspected attackers of Ortom arrested by police

Three suspects who allegedly attacked Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State have been arrested.

The suspects are not Fulani but three Jukun fishermen.

They were arrested by the police in connection with the attack on the governor.

Ortom was attacked in his farm along Tyo Mu, Makurdi by 15 gunmen.

The governor said he ran one and half kilometres to escape from being killed by the gunmen as his security officers engaged them in gun-battle.

But Security Adviser to Ortom, Col. Paul Hemba, confirmed the arrest of three of the suspects while conducting newsmen round the scene of the attack on Tuesday.

The Nation quoted Hemba as saying the police team found the fishermen close to the scene of the attack and were being investigated.

On Saturday, Ortom narrated how he was saved from the bandits.

“I appreciate the security men attached to me. They were able to repel them and they could not have access to me.

“And I thank God for my fitness to have run for more than one and a half kilometres without stopping. It means that God has given me strength and I am grateful to God.

“I don’t have problems with any Fulani man or Fulani race. But I have a problem with Fulani bandits who have vowed to take over Nigeria as their ancestral home. And I say no. Not when I am here and when I am governor leading my state.”

Ortom said if he as a governor could not go to farm with the entire security around him, he wondered who else could go to farm, saying one could imagine the pains that the people of Benue State were facing.

Governors worried over attack on Ortom – Ganduje

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state has disclosed that his colleagues are worried about last weekend’s attempt on the life of Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom.

Ganduje, who addressed newsmen Monday after a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja, however, submitted that the nation will soon overcome the kilings and attacks associated with the security challenges across the country.

Describing the attack on Ortom as unfortunate, the governor wondered if a state chief executive with security compliments could be brazenly attacked, what becomes of an ordinary citizen on the street.

He expressed hope that with the new service chiefs settling down after their appointment, security issues will definitely change for the better.

His words: The attack is unfortunate, but I believe with appointment of new service chiefs, new strategy will be developed and I think Mr. President has always been serious on this issue, but is rather unfortunate.

Not only governors are being attacked, anybody who is attacked in Nigeria, one should be worried because life is life. Certainly we’re worried because a governor is supposed to have some security with him, let alone an ordinary man who has no security. So you can see how serious the situation is but we believe we will come over it”.

Ganduje also stated that his administration had put necessary security measures in place which made Kano as the most peaceful state in the federation.

He said: “All what I know as of today, Kano is the most peaceful state in the federation and this is not by chance, there must be some security measures that we have taken, like full cooperation among the security agencies in Kano State. We introduced the command and control centre; the CCTV where we are viewing the whole Metropolitan Kano, we have the most powerful tracker vehicle, equipment in Kano.

“Falgore Forest where bandits usually inhabit, we said no, not in Kano State. We established a military training ground in Falgore Forest and therefore bandits cannot inhabit it. Our border with Kaduna, we have a forest and where we are establishing Rural Grazing Area (RUGA) programme, we discussed with nomadic Fulani, they agreed to be settled there. In fact, other Fulani are even coming”.

According to him, “we also established a security training institute where we are training our young men and women for community policing, even yesterday, we graduated 200, while 500 are undergoing training there, with the advice of the security agencies in Kano. So all these efforts are in order to keep Kano in the peace.”

He also announced that the state in a bid to decongest traffic in Kano metropolis plans to build a N9billion three level road interchange along Kano-Maiduguri Road with a completion period of 18 months.

Ganduje said he came to show President Buhari the prototype design of the road which will be named after him upon completion adding that funds to execute the road project will be sourced from the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state.

He said: “Kano is a mega city, because of security situation many people are coming into Kano now, traffic is increasing, buildings are increasing because people from the Northeast, people from even Northwest are coming to settle in Kano, so the volume of traffic is increasing.

“We revised the master plan of Kano state and all those areas where we have holdups we either build underpass or we build a bridge, and now we have resorted to putting the three together in one place; that is flyover, bridge, and underpass, all at one point so that there’ll not be any traffic jam”.

President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the attack on Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue, saying the brutal attacks on individuals and communities in the state, with the latest one targeting the governor, was unacceptable.

The president made the condemnation in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Sunday.

Buhari welcomed the dispatch of a high level team of crack investigators to the state from the Police headquarters in Abuja, urging the officers to uncover who, or whatsoever, was behind the attacks and bring them to justice.

He also expressed his sympathies, and that of the government of the federation to Ortom and Benue indigenes.

Buhari, however, maintained that the unfortunate incident must not be politicized, reiterating that ”an attack on one Nigerian is an attack on all Nigerians.”

The president directed the Police to undertake a thorough investigation into the incident involving the governor and into all such incidents affecting individuals and communities in the state.

Attack on Ortom: Ordinary citizens may be compelled to resort to self help – David Mark

Senator David Mark has the Nigerian government to guarantee the safety of lives and properties to prevent people from resorting to self-help.

Mark said this in reaction to the attempt on the life of the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, by gunmen suspected to be bandits.

A statement by his media aide, Paul Mumeh, quoted the governor as saying, “If a state governor can be so brazenly attacked, what would they not do to the ordinary citizens?

“Let me state clearly that Benue people are receptive and accommodating. But this should not be misconstrued or mistaken for weakness. Enough of this malady.

“If our government and security operatives can no longer guarantee peoples’ safety in their homes, farms or places of business, I am worried that the situation may compel citizens to resort to self help. That is the situation, we cannot contemplate and must not be allowed to happen because the consequences would be catastrophic.

“Therefore, federal government and all the security agencies must of a necessity come to terms with the painful reality of the unabating insecurity in the land and resolve to end it.”

Mark advised Ortom to see the attack as a reason to beef up security in the state, as he hailed him, saying he has lived up to his oath to defend and protect the people of Benue State.
