    Wike: Killing Ortom could plunge Nigeria into civil war

    Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has warned the Federal Government that killing Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom could lead to a civil war.

    Suspected herdsmen opened fire on Ortom’s convoy on Saturday with the governor escaping death.

    Fifteen gunmen had trailed him to a river bank in Tyo Mu along Makurdi/Gboko road in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State on Saturday and opened fire.

    “If you kill Ortom, then be prepared to bury Nigeria. If anything happens to Governor Ortom, the Federal Government will be held responsible and they should be prepared that there will be no more Nigeria,” he warned.

    The governor recalled how the former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Major General Jamil Sarham, and the All Progressives Congress chieftains had concluded plan to assassinate him during the 2019 general election.

    Wike described as disturbing the growing trend where the lives of incumbent governors were brazenly threatened.

    Attack: ‘I ran more than one and a half kilometres without stopping,’ Ortom recounts near death experience

    Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom on Saturday recounted his experience after surviving a deadly attack on his convoy by armed Fulani herdsmen.

    The governor also called on President Muhammadu Buhari and security agencies to fish out the criminals terrorising the state.

    Ortom narrated his experience to newsmen in Makurdi, the Benue State Capital.

    He was visiting a farm when the attackers struck but his security detail was able to repel them.

    The governor said he ran for “more than one and a half kilometres without stopping” to escape the assault.

    TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Benue is one of the States at the centre of Nigeria’s farmers-herdsmen clashes.

    “I appreciate the security men attached to me. They were able to repel them and they could not have access to me. And thank God for my fitness to have ran for more than one and a half kilometres without stopping. It means that God has given me strength and I am grateful to God.

    “I don’t have problems with any Fulani man or Fulani race. But I have a problem with Fulani bandits who have vowed to take over Nigeria as their ancestral home. And I say no. Not when I am here and when I am Governor leading my state. If I can’t go the farm as Governor, with the entire security around me, then who else can go to farm. You can imagine the pains that we have here in Benue State.

    “Thank God for Mr President who responded to my letter that anyone with AK-47 should be shot at sight. I’m yet to see that. Let me see it happen in Benue State.

    “I have reported these to the security agencies and I hope that this will be done so that the land will be safe for our people to go back to farm and do their work and survive and live their lives.

    “I want to call on Mr President, on the security agencies to fish these people out. They are in the forest between Makurdi and Abinse. They are living there and they are coming out to commit atrocities – rape women, kill our people, maim them, destroy our farmlands. And anytime the security agencies go after them, they run across the river and back to the forest.”

    Ortom denies building ethanol producing company in Benue

    Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue on Monday said he was not building any ethanol producing company in the state.
    Ortom made the clarification when he visited Pure Biotech Company Limited at Tyo-Mo, a settlement in Makurdi, the state capital.
    He said that he had nothing to do with the company and was surprised to hear about its existence.
    The governor disclosed that a friend notified him about the company and how some people were speculating that he was the owner of the company.
    He said that with his visit and the explanation offered by the company representative, Mr Stephen Numbeve, it was clear that he had nothing to do with it.
    Ortom also accepted the apology from the company for not following the laid down government procedures to acquire and develop the land and urged them to immediately rectify it.
    He also urged the management of the firm to immediately erect a signpost to educate the people about its activities.
    Ortom charged the host community to provide security for the facility, even as he directed security agencies to provide surveillance and patrols to encourage more investors to the state.
    He called on private investors within and outside the country to come and explore the investment opportunities available in Benue.
    The governor said that the company would provide job opportunities for youths in the state thereby reducing insecurity.
    Earlier, representative of the Pure Biotech Company Limited, Numbeve, apologised to the governor and Benue government for not following the laid down procedures for acquiring land in the state.
    Numbeve said the managing director had planned to pay a courtesy call on the governor to inform him of their activities, but was held back in China as a result of the second wave of COVID-19.
    He said that the firm was into Ethanol production and would need 500 and 300 metric tonnes of fresh and dried cassava daily.
    Numbeve said the company when completed would employ no fewer than 2,500 persons.
    He said the company acquired 25.4 hectares of land for the construction of the company in November 2020, adding that work on the site commenced in January.

    Ortom blows hot, says no more amnesty for criminals in Benue

    Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom on Saturday averred that there is no more amnesty for criminals in the state.

    The Governor who spoke at the burial of Terkura Suswam at Anyinne also bemoaned the conspiracy of silence among the people which he said was making the crisis to rage unabated.

    Terkura Suswam, the elder brother of former governor of the state, Senator Gabriel Suswam was murdered by some gunmen at his country home, Anyiin in Logo Local Government Area of the state.

    Ortom who criticized in strong terms the criminality in the three local government area of Sankera, Logo, Ukum and Katsina-Alla said that his government would no longer negotiate with any criminal.

    He restated his administration’s commitment to go after those who have taken into criminality in the state, particularly Sankera axis.

    Ortom said, “From intelligence report, some members of the community are supporting these criminals which makes it difficult for security men.

    “I want to assure youths in the state not only in Sankera that we are going to go after these criminals and by the grace of God we will get them.

    “There is no more amnesty, no more negotiation with them (criminals) except they come back like the prodigal son and plead for forgiveness.

    The Governor also appealed to Sankera people to support the government and security agencies to be able to restore normalcy in the troubled local governments.

    Governor Ortom described the killing of late Terkura as appalling and regretted that his murder may discourage indigenes who wish to invest in their respective localities.

    According to him, “What our administration is encouraging is local investors since the government cannot provide a job for everybody. With the number of investments Terkura had established in Anyiin, thousands of youths were taken out of labour market.

    “So for him to be killed this way is very unfortunate. Other people who may be planning to come home to invest will be discouraged.”

    Killers of Suswam’s elder brother won’t escape justice – Ortom

    Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has reacted to the killing of Terkura Suswam, elder brother to immediate past governor of the state and incumbent Senator representing Benue North East, Senator Gabriel Suswam saying the killers must be apprehended.

    The Governor in a statement signed on Wednesday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase said his administration will give security operatives maximum support to ensure that the killers are arrested and made to face consequences of their action.

    “Governor Ortom stresses that his administration will not surrender Benue to criminals, and gives assurance that killers and kidnapers operating in Sankera axis of the State won’t go unpunished,” the statement added.

    He sympathised with Senator Suswam and the rest of the family, as well as the entire people of Logo Local Government Area over the painful death of Terkura Suswam.

    He prayed that God grants the deceased eternal rest and his family the strength to bear the loss.

    TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that some daredevil gunmen on Tuesday night killed Terkura Suswam, elder brother to former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam.

    His aide, simply identified as Mr Solomon was also killed by the gunmen.

    According to the police, the attack took place when Suswam and his aide sat opposite his house at Elohim Plaza Anyiin to supervise repairs at the plaza. The gunmen who drove in a Toyota Camry vehicle attacked and shot them.

    The police statement which was signed by the spokesperson in the state, Anene Sewuese Catherine added that victims were rushed to NKST Anyii hospital where they were eventually confirmed dead.

    AK-47 Controversy: Peace at last as Ortom, Bala Mohammed reconcile, embrace [Photo]

    Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed and his Benue State counterpart, Samuel Ortom have settled their differences over comments made on AK-47 amid the security situation in the country.

    TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Mohammed had on February 12 said Fulani herders have no option but to carry AK-47 for self-defence because they are being attacked and killed by cattle rustlers.

    He also condemned South West, South-East Governors, and also Governor Ortom over the manner in which they are handling farmer-herder clashes.

    Governor Ortom had on February 22 responded to his Bauchi counterpart of being a terrorist based on his utterances supporting herdsmen from carrying AK-47 to defend themselves.

    Ortom also accused Mohammed of being a part of those threatening his life stressing that the Bauchi governor should be held responsible if anything happens to him.

    Following the altercation between the two governors, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under whose platform they were elected into office, waded into their conflict.

    Also, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and his Adamawa counterpart, Ahmadu Fintiri, initiated reconciliation efforts.

    The efforts seemed to have paid off on Tuesday with governors Ortom and Mohammed embracing each other in Rivers State.

    After a closed-door meeting at Wike’s private residence in Port Harcourt, the governors insisted that their arguments over a comment made by the Bauchi governor on the bearing of arms by herders were for the good of the country, not to cause an ethnic crisis.

  • Bala and Ortom: Time for Statesmanship, By Issa Aremu

    Bala and Ortom: Time for Statesmanship, By Issa Aremu

    It amounts to saying the obvious to accept that Governor Bala Mohammed (born 5 October 1958) is the 4th democratically elected governor of Bauchi State. Similarly it is an open knowledge that Samuel Ioraer Ortom (born 23 April,1961) is the third elected governor of Benue State in the current democratic dispensation. But that is where the obvious “difference” lies. Both Ortom and Bala share a lot in common than they would want us to believe through their reported star-words of different name callings. The two preside over second generation states. Benue State is named after the Benue River. It was formed from the old Benue Plateau state in 1976 just as the state of Bauchi was formed the same year out of the then North Eastern state.

    The two were once privileged Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Bala Mohammed was the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) between 2010 and 2015. Samuel Ortom was a Minister of State Trade and Investment during the presidency of Goodluck Jonathan making him co-cabinet member with Mr Bala. The two are tested veteran politicians of this era in which the end seems to justify the means, regardless of the cost to party principles, the communities, comradeship and well-being of their followers. Indeed the two are typical pro-types of “political butterflies” of this republic, in which politicians see political parties as mere ladders to the next political office . In April 2015, Governor Ortom contested for Governorship of Benue State and won under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC). But in July 2018, Ortom announced his departure from All Progressives Congress to decamp to PDP. In March 2019 Benue State, he was reelected as Governor with 434,473 votes to defeat the runner up Emmanuel of APC who had 345,155 votes. On 21 January, 2020 the Supreme Court affirmed his election. Similarly, Bala’s political trajectory follows the same pattern of pursuit of power through many political platforms with an eye on the goal: political power! Under All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) he was elected to the Senate representing Bauchi South Senatorial District. In March 2010, he fell out with his “god-father” Isa Yuguda. He was among the senators who championed the controversial “doctrine of necessity”, which appointed then Goodluck Jonathan as acting president to replace incapacitated President Yar Adua. Bala has always not been a champion of “Fulanis,”. His sympathy was with Niger Deltan Good Luck Jonathan than with an indisposed President Yar Adua who by all measures was deserving of our compassion . Following the death of Umaru Yar’Adua, Bala Mohammed joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and became a close associate of President Goodluck Jonathan with a worthy portfolio to match: FCT.

    In 2018, Mohammed emerged as the governorship flag bearer of People’s Democratic Party ( PDP) candidate for Bauchi State. On 26 March 2019, Bala Mohammed polled 515,113 votes to trounce the incumbent Governor Mohammed Abdulllahi Abubakar who received 500,625 votes. His election was also later upheld by the Supreme Court.

    Bauchi and Benue States ranked 7th and 9th in terms of populations: 4.6 and 4.2 millions respectively. The two states are certainly not among the 10 leading states by GDP. Benue is ranked 15th with $7 billion GDP, Bauchi 22nd with $5 billion GDP compared to Lagos’ $33 billion and Rivers state’s $ 21billion GDP respectively. Poverty head counts of the two states average 60 percent. There are no quotable quotes attributed to the duo on poverty eradication, fighting corruption and wealth generation. Interestingly the two are from the same party (PDP) whose Publicity scribe , Kola Ologbondiyan once hailed their victories with fanfare in March 9 2019 polls.

    The point cannot be overstated: both Bala and Ortom are united by history, geography, underdevelopment and poverty of their peoples, conferred political privileges (in the class of Governors with immunity) than they want us to believe through their recent diversionary diatribes. I search in vain for an iota of Godliness in their verbal hemorrhage . “AK-47-bearing herdsmen are forced to do so because the government has failed to secure their lives and livelihoods” according to Bala. He went further to say herdsmen “need the AK-47 rifles to defend themselves from cattle rustlers and other challenges encountered on the road”. He took a swipe at his counterpart, Samuel Ortom, for alleged “anti-Fulani sentiment” who in turn verbally assaulted his “brother, friend, and colleague Bauchi Governor Mohammed”. Witness Otorm : “I am beginning to think that my brother, the governor of Bauchi State is part of the terrorist Fulani organisation that is terrorizing this country.
    One critical question begging for answer is: Who speaks for Nigeria and Nigerians when elected governors who took oath to defend the constitution of Nigeria unacceptably pitch their tents behind unknown parochial constitutions of their “peoples.” The two Governors are of my generation, born at independence. Without Nigeria possibly they would not be known for what they are today: accomplished senator, Ministers and Governors. It’s time to reinvent statesmanship in place of the current official brinkmanship that is worsening the security challenges in the country. Benjamin Disraeli, was twice Prime Minister of Great Britain in the 19th century. He once observed that; “The world is weary of statesmen whom democracy has degraded into politicians”.

    The exchanges between Bala and Ortom are unhelpful to their peoples who deserve good governance which can only come through cooperation and solidarity of governors not grandstanding of dubious value. I recently hailed the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) led by its chairman, Dr Kayode Fayemi for the engagement with all the stakeholders including the leadership of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), security agencies and other stakeholders on the recent security challenges in Ondo State. Thats the way to go. We need robust communal ownership of policing through cooperation between states and with the Federal government. What is at stake is development and productivity for a nation trying to exit a recession in a pandemic. 1999 constitution describes all Nigerians as citizens. Only criminals profit from unconstitutional profiling based on language and religion instead of their crimes. Every avoidable clash between farmers and herders pushes Nigeria further into food insecurity and import dependency. The urgent need to ensure security for national development should guide the national security narrative. I agree with Linda Lingle that “Politicians all too often think about the next election. Statesmen think about the next generation”.

  • Insecurity: Herdsmen will drag Nigeria into another civil war if you don’t act fast, Ortom writes Buhari [Full Letter]

    Insecurity: Herdsmen will drag Nigeria into another civil war if you don’t act fast, Ortom writes Buhari [Full Letter]

    Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to act swiftly before the killer herdsmen drag the nation into another civil war.

    In a letter to the president, Governor Ortom said the security challenges faced by the country have assumed new dimensions where the now emboldened assailants and armed herdsmen daringly enforce their will on legitimate owners and occupants of ancestral lands.

    According to the governor, there are many areas of concern over the Federal Government’s actions and inactions, including the widely discussed concern over inequalities in key appointments.

    Ortom was of the opinion that the seemingly nepotistic appointments have reinforced the perception that the Buhari-led administration is not fair and just to all Nigerians.

    The governor while asserting that he is a major stakeholder in the Nigeria project, said he has a responsibility to raise major concerns regarding insecurity and to offer some recommendations towards addressing them.

    As part of his recommendation on how to deal with the herdsmen crisis and insecurity in general, Governor Ortom asked the Federal Government to develop a National Ranching Policy in line with global best practice in animal husbandry.

    He further asked President Buhari to direct the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to enforce Prohibition of Open Grazing Laws passed by various States of the federation.

    Read the governor’s letter below:

    His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR President
    Federal Republic of Nigeria State House
    Abuja

    APPEAL TO ACT BEFORE HERDSMEN DRAG NIGERIA INTO A CIVIL WAR

    It is my honour and privilege to extend warm compliments of the New Year to Your Excellency on behalf of myself, the Government and good people of Benue State.

    2. As a State, we welcome and appreciate the establishment of three Federal educational institutions in Benue State namely: Federal University of Health Sciences, Federal College of Education and a Federal Polytechnic.

    3. We are also thankful for the various appointments given Benue sons and daughters. We expect more of such strategic projects and appointments more so given the support you have received from our Government and the people of the State. We acknowledge and appreciate the intervention which your Administration made as Bailout to States during the first recession, although Benue is yet to receive the second Tranche which you approved and referred to the Federal Ministry of Finance to verify and pay two years ago and which Kogi State received in 2019.

    4. Your Excellency, we especially want to commend you for responding to my earlier appeal to deploy, upgrade and retain Military Operations in the State. These Operations, particularly Operation Whirl Stroke, working in collaboration with other Security Agencies, have contributed to relative peace in several parts of the State even though the challenges are not yet over.

    5. Mr. President, we are not oblivious of the challenges that the country has faced in the life of your Administration. These include two recessions, the COVID-19 global pandemic and the unprecedented nationwide security challenges resulting into the largest loss of lives and property since the Civil War. These security challenges especially have unsettled the country economically, socially and politically.

    6. Your Excellency, these security challenges have assumed new dimensions where the now emboldened assailants and armed herdsmen daringly enforce their will on legitimate owners and occupants of ancestral lands. There are many areas of concern over the Federal Government’s actions and inactions, including the widely discussed concern over inequalities in key appointments. These have reinforced the perception that the Administration is not fair and just to all Nigerians.

    7. Mr. President, please recall my earlier letters drawing your attention to the murderous activities of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore and other armed Fulani socio-cultural groups and their leaders who publicly and brazenly claimed responsibility for the killings and destruction of property across States of the country. These groups and their leaders have also boasted that Nigeria belongs exclusively to them. The letters alerted you on several challenges and called for the arrest and prosecution of the leaders and proscription of the organizations in question. The letters are as follows:
    (i) Incessant Violent Attacks on Benue Farmers in Benue State by Armed Herdsmen Ref. No. AI/68/T.I/64 dated 7th June 2017.

    (ii) Alleged Planned Attack by Fulani Herdsmen on Benue State and the need to Support the Anti-Open Grazing Law Ref. No. AI/68/I/149 on 16th October, 2017.
    (iii) Violent Attacks on Communities in Benue State by Armed Fulani Herdsmen Ref. No. AI/68/I/174 dated 2nd January, 2018.
    (iv) Fresh Planned Attacks by Fulani Herdsmen on Benue people
    Ref. No. AI/68/I/189 dated 18th January, 2018.

    8. We are alarmed that rather than being censured, these leaders and organizations have been emboldened and intensified their atrocities. They have received encouragement in the process through various actions and inactions by the Federal Government, including the following:
    (i) Open Visa Policy which has promoted unprecedented influx of Fulani herdsmen carrying sophisticated and prohibited weapons into Nigeria;
    (ii) Non-compliance with the ECOWAS protocol on transhumance;
    (iii) Swift condemnation of any perceived or real threats on Fulani while maintaining silence over their atrocities and admonishing victimized host communities to accommodate their oppressors and learn to live at peace with them;
    (iv) The failure to arrest, disarm and prosecute armed herdsmen and Fulani militia;
    (v) Disarming other Nigerians who have licensed weapons;
    (vi)Continuation of open grazing and support for grazing reserves, stock routes, cattle colony and Ruga despite nationwide acknowledgement that this practice is unviable; and that ranching is the global best practice for livestock production;
    (vii)The non-implementation of the National Livestock Transformation Plan despite its approval by the National Economic Council and its acceptance by pilot States.

    9. This ugly situation has caused devastation across the country. In Benue State, 19 out of 23 Local Government Areas have been affected by attacks by Fulani herdsmen leading to loss of lives, destruction of property and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Benue people who are now living in Internally Displaced Persons Camps and host communities across the State. The total number of Internally Displaced Persons currently in the Camps in Benue State is 483,692 persons.

    10. Returning these Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their ancestral homes has been impossible as herdsmen continue to attack, kill, maim and rape those who return. The Federal Government is also yet to redeem the pledge made on 15th May, 2018 by Vice President Prof. Yemi Osibanjo to contribute N10Billion to Benue State towards the reconstruction, rehabilitation, reintegration and resettlement of displaced persons. The failure of the IDPs to return to their ancestral homes to resume normal farming activities, together with the impact of climate change, has posed a serious threat to national food security, as evidenced by rising food prices.

    11. Sir, we all remember the wise counsel of Nigeria’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, the late Alhaji Maitama Sule, when Northern Leaders Forum visited you as the President-Elect in 2015. He said, inter alia “…With justice, you can rule Nigeria well. Justice is the key. If you do justice to all and sundry, and I say all and sundry. If you’re going to judge between people, do justice irrespective of their tribe, religion or even political inclination. Justice must be done to whosoever deserves it.”

    12. Mr. President, this call for justice is the heart cry of every patriotic Nigerian. It is not a call against the Fulani race or any other ethnic group, but a call to make Nigeria work for every Nigerian in line with the Oath of Office we took as leaders and your pledge to be a President for all Nigerians and to be for everybody and for nobody. Unfortunately, you seem to be tilting towards the Fulani at the expense of other nationalists.

    13. Many citizens including patriotic Fulanis like Dr. Nura Alkali are alarmed at this tilt and the boast of Miyetti Allah that Nigeria is the heritage of the Fulani of the whole world. These citizens continue to condemn the atrocities of the Fulani across the country while also calling on the Federal Government to end these atrocities by withdrawing from their one-sided sympathy for herdsmen.

    14. Only recently, the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, added his voice in this regard. He acknowledged that seven or eight out of every 10 kidnappers arrested in Nigeria are Fulani. This is not a good testimony. More so, the consequences this image has cast on the Fulani tribe should be corrected now.

    15. These concerns were reiterated by the Nigerian Tribune Editorial of January 25, 2021:
    “it has become an established pattern for his Presidency to swiftly intervene on issues bordering on the atrocities of Fulani herdsmen in the country, acting as their publicist in a fashion that assails the sensibility of other Nigerians, and oftentimes unabashedly descending into the arena and polarising the country along ethnic and regional lines. This sordid trend is inimical to confidence building, genuine bonding and cohesion of citizens in a multi-ethnic, multi- cultural and multi-religious society and it is really concerning, and perilously so, that such vital sensitivities are being discounted at the highest level of governance in the land. From his utterances and actions, it is clear that Muhammadu Buhari is not ready to be the President of all Nigerians.”

    16. It is important to point out that these are not sentiments directed against Fulanis who are indigenous to Nigeria and have been living at peace with other Nigerians. Testimonies abound in that regard. For example, my wife and I were accommodated by a Fulani man while in school at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Till date, we are still very good family friends and he visits me occasionally in Benue. This point underscores the pain we all have had to go through to understand the tragedy where armed herdsmen from Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, Niger, Cameroon and other neighbouring countries are pushing the whole country to the precipice. While addressing the Nigerian community on Tuesday 19th April 2019 in Dubai, You also blamed these foreign herdsmen for the attacks on Nigeria.

    17. Mr. President, as a major stakeholder in the Nigeria project, I have a responsibility to raise these major concerns and to offer some recommendations towards addressing them.
    (i) The Federal Government should develop a National Ranching Policy in line with global best practice in animal husbandry. Today, open grazing is extinct in most countries of the world. In Europe, America, Asia and in many countries in Africa, pastoralism has long given way to ranching. How can Nigeria then still be battling with a problem of pastoralism that in other countries has been solved over a century ago? According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), India has 303 million cattle, Brazil, 226 million, China, 100 million, USA, 93 million, Argentina, 53 million and Australia 27 million. All these countries ranch their animals. Nigeria has less than 20 million cattle which could also be easily ranched. Unfortunately, the cows are allowed to either roam the streets freely or encroach on people’s farms and other investments. A Ranching policy in Nigeria will provide avenue for both crop farmers and those involved in animal husbandry to increase production using modern technology. This is the only way out of ending farmers/herders conflict;
    (ii) Direct the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to enforce Prohibition of Open Grazing Laws passed by various States of the federation;
    (iii) Abolish Open Visa policy and direct relevant security agencies to ensure full compliance with the ECOWAS Protocol on Transhumance;
    (iv) The Federal Government should immediately pay compensation to families killed and those whose properties were destroyed by the herdsmen in various communities across the country;
    (v) Condemn the atrocities perpetrated by armed herdsmen; arrest and prosecute the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore and other Fulani Socio-cultural groups who have consistently admitted to the wanton killings and destruction of communities across the country. These include Husaini Yusuf Bosso (National Vice President of Miyetti Allah Cattle

    Herders Association), Badu Salisu Ahmadu and Umar Amir Shehu, (President and Secretary of Fulani Nationality Movement), Alhaji Abdullahi Bello Bodejo and Engr. Saleh Alhassan (President and Secretary of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore) along with their sponsors;
    (vi) Proscribe Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Fulani Nationality Movement, Fulani Herders Association and other violent Fulani extremist groups, as was done in the case of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), given that the Global Terrorism Index ranks Fulani militia as the fourth deadliest terrorist group in the world;
    (vii) LicenseLaw-abidingNigerianstocarryweaponsinself-defence;
    (viii) Ensure justice, fairness and equity in all issues relating to public safety and security;
    (ix)
    Support the resettlement and rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons as a result of herdsmen atrocities in all States of the country.

    18. In conclusion, Your Excellency, I am writing to you as a patriot who is concerned about your reputation and the fate of our dear country. I am imploring you once again to rise to the challenges of these times to avert the country’s drift to anarchy and disintegration, a situation that sycophants and praise-singers might be unwittingly shielding from you. In 2015, Nigerians enthusiastically welcomed your return as a leader with a reputation for uprightness, fair-mindedness and integrity. The current situation is raising doubts in the minds of many Nigerians who had believed in you. Mr. President, your compatriots are looking up to you to act fast to redress the situation.
    I thank you most sincerely for your kind attention. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

    Killer herdsmen: Ortom is Ortom’s problem, not Buhari, three CSOs attack Benue gov

    Three civil society groups have condemned the attack on President Muhammadu Buhari by Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue over the activities of criminal herdsmen in the country.

    The groups are Nigeria Project Initiative; Initiative to Save Democracy and Global Economic Policy Initiative.

    Ortom was reported to have accused the president of being “lenient’’ towards criminal herdsmen.

    However, the leaders of the groups, Mr Mohammed Salihu, Akinloye James and Mr Bernard Okri in a joint statement in Abuja on Tuesday, dismissed the allegations against the president by the governor.

    According to them, it is cheap and sensational for Ortom to blame Buhari for the ills of his government and the state, saying “the truth is that Ortom is Ortom’s problem, not anyone else.’’

    The statement read in part: “we react to the widely circulated attack on the president by the Governor of Benue State Samuel Ortom, the summary of which is the allegation that President Muhammadu Buhari is “lenient“ towards criminal herdsmen.

    “As friends of the Presidency, we like to defend the president by saying that contrary to the wrong assertion of the governor, President Buhari is a patriotic, nationalistic and fair-minded leader who is at all times ready to defend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

    “He is a leader committed to the defence of the rights of all citizens, majority and minority, including ethnic and religious minorities, meting out justice without fear or favour when crimes are committed.

    “Under the Buhari government, the climate of impunity has been banished.

    “Gov. Ortom is himself a witness to this when Benue State suffered attacks by criminal herdsmen and bandits.

    “President Buhari travelled to Makurdi, addressed communities, offered sympathy and support and ordered law enforcement agencies to take action against the criminals.

    “The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on the other hand is a failed leader with nothing to show to his people for all the years he has been in office.

    “Under him, religious tensions have intensified. Inter-ethnic violence has remained pervasive. His contribution to Benue State in the last six years is seen more in the increased incidents of religiously and ethnically motivated criminal violence throughout the state.’’

    The groups also stressed the need for the governor to do better in addressing issues of violence between farmers and herders.

    “He must do better on the issues of violence against women, government corruption, extra-judicial killing and the mayhem unleashed by state-supported cultists and vigilance groups.

    “The governor needs to be more responsive to the feelings and yearnings of his people.

    “A governor, who collects monthly subventions from the centre, collects bailout funds from Buhari as do many other governors but fails to pay workers and pensioners should look at himself in the mirror to determine where his problems lie,’’ the groups said.
