Why Pastor Ize-Iyamu withdrew from Edo governorship race

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, one the All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirants for the Sept.21 governorship election has withdrawn, ahead of Saturday’s primaries.

Ize-Iyamu, said this at a news conference in Benin on Friday.

He said that his decision to quit was painful adding that he took the decision after due consultation with friends, family and political associates.

He, however, pledged to support any of the APC governorship candidates who would emerge in the Saturday’s primary

Ize-Iyamu commended President Bola Tinubu and the national leadership of the party for their fairness and commitment to democratic process.

“I entered the contest as a progressive democrat, with an open mind to keenly contest and accept the result of a process that is fair, credible and transparent.

” I appreciate the commendable effort made by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC

“To correct the erroneous impression maliciously created by certain persons that some aspirants including myself had been disqualified from the gubernatorial contest.

“The NWC constituted the authentic screening committee and all twelve aspirants who purchased and completed the nomination forms were successfully screened and subsequently issued clearance certificates,” he said.
He added: ” This step was praise worthy and helped in restoring our integrity in the eyes of the public.

“Having been cleared to contest, I regrettably wish to announce my withdrawal from the race.

“Although painful, this decision has become imperative after an exhaustive consultation with my family, friends, political associates and supporters.

“I make this sacrifice in the interest of the peace and unity that the party desperately requires at both state and national levels.”

” I humbly appeal to the good people of Edo State to accept my decision which is very personal and I promise to be there for them at all times.

“I acknowledge the fatherly role of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, as well as the party’s National leadership for their fairness and commitment to the democratic process”.

Ize-Iyamu’s exit had left APC with 11 aspirants, ahead of Saturday’s primaries.

They included Dennis Idahosa, Clem Agba, Monday Okpebholo, Lucky Imasuen, Anamero Dekeri, Gideon Ikhine and Col. David Imuse, retired Major Gen. Charles Airhiavbere, Oserheimen Osunbor, Blessing Agbomhere, and Ernest Umakhihe.

APC: 87 aspirants for 26 legislative seats screened in Osun

The Chairman of the Osun State Legislative Screening Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has said 87 aspirants will be screened for 26 legislative seats in the state.

Ize-Iyamu, addressing reporters yesterday at the APC secretariat, said 81 of the aspirants obtained their forms in Osun State, while six others bought theirs from the national secretariat in Abuja.

He said the committee would be fair to all the aspirants.

“Eighty-seven aspirants sought to contest for 26 seats of the House of Assembly. That is to tell you how popular the APC is. Eighty-one bought their forms in Osun here and six bought their forms in Abuja.

“There are constitutional requirements and there are party requirements, but basically, we want to be sure they are Nigerian citizens.

“We want to see local government certificates, they must be party members, they must be voters, and we also want to know their age, we want to see their educational qualifications, if you claim to be a doctor, you must provide a certificate to prove it.”

Recall that sometime in April, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) published the personal particulars and list of candidates (Form EC9) for the Osun State governorship election.

The commission in a statement by Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, in Abuja, said the list was published at INEC state and local government offices in Osun State as required by law.

Mr Okoye said that the list was published in compliance with the Electoral Act 2022, following the close of nominations by political parties.

It was gathered that according to the published particular of the 15 candidates, while none of the governorship candidates was female, six of the deputy governorship candidates were female.

The published candidates include Adegboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress, Adeleke Nurudeen of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Omigbodun Akinrinola of Social Democratic Party.

He remind political parties that under Section 32(2) of the Electoral Act 2022, any party that observes that the name of its candidate is missing from the list “shall notify the Commission in writing.”

He said that such letter must be signed by such party national chairman and secretary, supported with an affidavit not later than 90 days to the election.

“Furthermore, the attention of parties is drawn to Section 32(3) of the Electoral Act 2022, which provides that failure to notify the Commission “shall not be ground to invalidate the election”.

“The final list is published in our State and Local Government offices in Osun State as well as our website and social media platforms for public information as required by law.

“Political parties are enjoined to note the provision of the law for compliance,” he said.

  • JUST IN: Pastor Ize-Iyamu in trouble over N700m money laundering case

JUST IN: Pastor Ize-Iyamu in trouble over N700m money laundering case

A Federal High Court sitting in Benin City, Edo State on Tuesday ruled that it has jurisdiction to entertain the money laundering charge brought against Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2016 governorship election in the state.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the money laundering charge was brought against Pastor Ize-Iyamu, and four others by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The other defendants are Lucky Imasuen, former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Chief Dan Orbih, former PDP chairman in Edo State; Tony Aziegbemi and one Efe Erimuoghae.

The defendants were alleged to have sometime in March 2015 in Benin City directly taken possession of the sum of seven hundred million (N700,000,000) without any contract award which sum was allegedly part of proceeds of an unlawful act.

One of the charges reads: “That you Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Lucky Imasuen, Tony Aziegbemi, Chief Dan Orbih, Efe Erimuoghae Anthony and Chief Anthony Anenih (now at large) sometime in March 2015 in Benin within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did directly take possession and control of the sum of N700,000,000.00 (seven hundred million naira) only without any contract award which sum you reasonably ought to have known form part of proceeds of an unlawful act, to wit; fraud and corruption; and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 15(2)(d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 (as amended by the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Amendment Act 2012 and punishable under Section 15(3)of the same Act”.

However, Pastor Ize-Iyamu and the four other defendants had pleaded not guilty to the charges setting the stage for their trial.

Charles Edosomwan, counsel to the first defendant had challenged the jurisdiction of the court to hear the matter on the grounds that the charges filed against the defendants were based on election matter.

He argued that the appropriate Court to try electoral matters was the Magistrate or High Court of the State.

In his ruling today, Justice M. G Umar said the matter before the Court was money laundering which the Federal High Court has exclusive jurisdiction over and therefore dismissed their application.

He berated the defendants for filing the motion which he said was intended to waste the time of the Court.

Justice Umar adjourned the case till May 18, 2021 for further hearing.

Court strikes out PDP’s suit against Ize-Iyamu

The Federal High Court Abuja, on Tuesday, struck out a suit filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seeking Osagie Ize-Iyamu’s disqualification from the Sept. 19 governorship election in Edo.

Delivering judgment, Justice Ahmed Mohammed, struck out the suit on grounds that it had become academic.

The judge also said that he saw no legal benefit that would accrue to the plaintiff if the suit succeeded.

The PDP had dragged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Ize-Iyamu to court praying for an order disqualifying Ize-Iyamu from the elections on the grounds that he was unlawfully nominated by APC.

The PDP alleged that he was unlawfully nominated because APC did not conduct proper primaries to nominate candidates for the Sept. 19 election in Edo.

The party based its allegation on the grounds that Mr Adams Oshiomohle, who conducted the “purported” primaries that nominated Ize-Iyamu was no longer national chairman of the party and had no right to conduct the primaries.

The PDP held that the APC, having failed to conduct a valid primary election, was not entitled to participate in the election.

Objecting to the suit, the APC held that the election had already been conducted and the candidate of the PDP had won the election.

The APC also submitted that it had not challenged the outcome of the election, neither did it petition the winners at the election petition tribunal.

On the last adjourned date, Mrs Wendy Kuku, arguing on behalf of INEC, had urged the court to dismiss the suit for lacking in merit.

Similarly, counsel to the APC, Mr Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, had prayed the court to dismiss the suit on the grounds that the suit was tantamount to “Mr A taking panadol for Mr B’s headache’’.

Ize- Iyamu’s counsel, Roland Otaru (SAN) had also prayed the court to dismiss the suit on the grounds that it had become academic since the election had already been conducted and won by Gov. Godwin Obaseki.

Ize-Iyamu promises to reactivate NNPC Benin depot

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the Edo governorship election has promised to re-open the NNPC Benin depot for economic activities if elected governor.

Ize-Iyamu gave the assurance during a visit to the concerned workers of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Warri Zone, in Benin on Wednesday, adding that the closure of the depot had deprived the state of huge economic resources, while also posing a challenge to marketers in sourcing petroleum products outside the state.

“The state government should have taken it up when petroleum products were no longer supplied to the depot. Let me assure you that reopening of the depot will be one of my priorities. We will do it to keep our state economically vibrant and to ensure that the petroleum products are easily supplied in the state.”

He assured the union of better days and urged its members to canvass for votes for the APC in the Edo election.

“The union is usually non-partisan, but as you have chosen to support me, it is something I cherish,” he said.

Meanwhile, Comrade Aneru Bello, Vice President of NUPENG, Warri zone, said the union believed in the leadership qualities of Ize-Iyamu.

Bello said, “We will ensure we actualise your mandates with you and we believe you are contesting for the good of Edo people. A vote for APC is a vote for progress and we want to reaffirm that majority of us are with you and will work to actualize your mandate.”

Edo 2020: Delete Oshiomhole’s image from Ize-Iyamu, Obaseki will gallantly lose on Sept 19 – Edolites

…say we’ll vote according to our conscience

The larger than life image of former All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole on Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu’s guber ambition may make him lose Edo 2020 guber polls.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG, reports that the active participation of Oshiomhole in Ize-Iyamu’s campaign may deny the Redeemed Christian Church of God pastor victory on September 19.

Most Edolites who spoke on the forthcoming elections simply gave the victory to Ize-Iyamu because of his massive grassroots connection across the state.

But quickly added that with Oshiomhole standing with him his chances of emerging governor of the state is very slim.

One of the Edolites, a prominent son of Edo South who spoke under the condition of anonymity said:

“Look my son, if you delete Osho from POI, the election will heavily tilt in his favor because he has always been there for us.

“Every Christmas and Easter festivities, POI for several years must send bags of rice to us despite the fact that we know that he is not holding any Political office.

“This has been his tradition and such a man cannot come to me for his vote then I will look the other way, it’s impossible.

Another prominent leader told TNG that”in Edo South, POI is the ultimate if not for the manner Osho de-marketed him in our last guber election.

“You don’t expect me to raise the hands of the pastor that has been painted in the image of a monster before my people, it will dwindle my personality.

“I think I am bigger than that because it was Osho who decided on his own to rubbish us APC members.

“There’s apathy in Edo over the manner Obaseki was disqualified from the primaries in the first place.

“In a civilised clime, Obaseki would have been allowed to participate in the primaries, if he loses, well and good we will understand.

“But for Oshiomhole under his watch as APC Chairman to allow Obaseki to be disqualified for obvious reasons cannot really be deciphered.

“On election day, we’ll vote according to our conscience and I will add that if not for Osho, POI would have coasted to victory without stress.

The grassroots network of POI has been his major weapon in the forthcoming guber election slated for September 19.

He has maintained this network over the years and this may just be the tonic that may open the gate of Denis Osadebey Government House for him.

  • Edo 2020: Obaseki should explain how he spent N6bn on renovation of Ogbe stadium

Edo 2020: Obaseki should explain how he spent N6bn on renovation of Ogbe stadium

…when same amount can be spent on 18mini stadia in 18LGAs

…says it’s undemocratic for 7 lawmakers to legislate for all Edolites

    …speaks on N700m allegation

…insists he has not lost his calling as a pastor

Edo State guber aspirant, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu on Thursday said his rival in the race, Governor Godwin Obaseki should explain how he spent N6billion on the renovation of Samuel Ogbemudia when same amount can build 18 mini stadia across the State.

The guber aspirant, who disclosed this in a media parley in Abuja noted that such a huge amount of money could have been channelled into at least 18 mini stadia.

Ize-Iyamu further explained that this same amount could have been used to build “at least 18 mini stadia across the state and that is what I will do.

Asked whether his meddle into politics will not affect his calling as a man of God, the pastor said he can’t lose his calling because if nobody steps forward to challenge issues politically who else will do it.

    N700m Allegation:

The money in question was released by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP which I only signed for and it was taken to Chief Tony Anenih’s house for disbursement to LG chairmen in the state.

“I was not given even N100k for signing and Chief Anenih had to add his money because he felt it was not going to be enough.

On the state House of Assembly, the guber aspirant condemned a situation whereby only seven lawmakers legislate for Edolites while the remaining 17 are barred from law making.

He said “what ought to form a quorum is a minimum of 8 but today only 7 lawmakers run the House.

On security in the state, he said nothing”tangible has been done to curb insecurity as the money made available is not even enough to fuel vehicles.

He explained his agenda for Edolites code named:SIMPLE.
“Let me explain the simplicity of a simple agenda, it’s an acronym which means Security and Social Welfare. This means infrastructural development and urban renewal, M means manpower development, the P means public private partnership, the L means leadership by example and the E means employment and empowerment scheme.

“Starting with the first issue of security; you all will agree with me that there can be no meaningful development in the absence of security. Mr President has done well but state government, even the local government must compliment the efforts of the federal government.

“Unfortunately in our state, what we are experiencing now is a very high level of insecurity to the extent that few businesses that we have are closing up and no new ones are coming in.

“There is no amount of MoU that you sign if there is no security they will not come because nobody is going to endanger their lives simply because you are inviting them to come and do business in your state.

If you want to secure your state you must be ready to invest in it unfortunately again this is not being done in our state. The excuse that security is in the hands if the federal government, security agencies are answerable to the commander in chief is not a good excuse for insecurity. If that was so I cannot justify why governors will collect security votes every month. I think the essence of such approval is that they should complement the efforts of the federal government to secure their states.

In our state what is released his very little that cannot even fuel their vehicles and even our own local vigilantee or community security are all phasing out, in the absence of encouragement they no longer exist and now to ply our roads federal and state high ways has become a very risky venture. So security is going to be key in moving our state forward.

Secondly infrastructural development and urban renewal; it is unfortunate that a lot of the promises that were made whether in terms of roads, light, hospitals and even schools are not actualised.

Four years ago the present government promised that he was going to bring healthcare to the door step of our people, in all the wards of the state he would establish a primary health care centre that is well equipped and well furnished but at the end of the four years he has not been able to complete it out of 121, how can that be a pas mark.

The hospital that Comrade Adams Oshiomhole built and established even when the present governor ….became a subject of unnecessary controversy, today that hospital has been given to a private consultant who is charging fees that the average Edo man cannot pay. So the hospital us open but it is not open to Edo people because they cannot access the place. A hospital that was built with the resources of all, it is unfortunate that hospital has become inaccessible to Edo people.
