APC governors in crucial meeting with Oshiomhole to rescue Obaseki

Some All Progressives Congress (APC) governors have stormed the national secretariat of the party on Monday to hold a peace meeting with the national chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

The move by the governors are in a bid to rescue Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State.

The meeting is a follow-up to a similar meeting held with the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos on Sunday night.

The meeting is currently ongoing at the National Executive Committee Hall at the party National Secretariat in Abuja, with the National Chairman presiding.

The governors present at meeting include the Chairman of Progressive Governors Forum and Kebbi State governor, Atiku Bagudu, Ondo State governor – Rotimi Akeredolu, Lagos State – Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Gombe State – Mohammed Inuwa – Gombe, Kano State – Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Kwara State – Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq.

Edo 2020: Obaseki worried, runs to Buhari with delegation of governors as APC primary nears

Uncertainty continues to reign over Governor Godwin Obaseki’s re-election bid as the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu has parried plea to give an outright assurance on his (Obaseki) fate ahead of the party’s governorship primary for Edo State scheduled for June 22.

Yesterday, Obaseki and eight other governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, on Sunday, held a meeting with the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, at the state House Marina, Lagos to seal make a case for the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki.

The meeting, held at Lagos House, Marina, the official residence of the Lagos State governor, which lasted over two hours, centred on the need for Tinubu’s intervention in the feud between Obaseki and the APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, which according to the governors, might cost the Edo State governor a second term ticket.

The governors, who flew into Lagos in the afternoon to plead with Tinubu to intervene in the matter, were led by the Chairman, Progressive Governors Forum (a forum of governors elected on the platform of APC) and Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Bagudu.

On the delegation were Obaseki, Sani Bello (Niger), Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), Gboyega Oyetola (Osun), Mai Bunu (Yobe) and Simon Lalong (Plateau).

They all implored the APC national leader to save Obaseki from the kind of humiliation, which the immediate past governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, suffered during the party’s primaries ahead of the 2019 elections.

“The governors practically begged Tinubu to ensure that the party would be fair to their colleague during the Edo governorship primary election and that Obaseki should not be muscled out,” a source at the meeting revealed.

The APC National Working Committee (NWC) has adopted direct primaries to elect the party’s candidate for the Edo State governorship election, which many believe, might give an edge to Obaseki’s main challenger, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who is backed by a faction of the party in the state loyal to Oshiomhole.

It was gathered that Tinubu’s response to the plea by the governors was that every member of the party should be given equal opportunity to vie for the governorship ticket and that direct primary election as approved by the NWC is a test of democracy and popularity of aspirants.

The source further told our correspondent that the position is not far from the APC national leader’s earlier position that “Obaseki must reconcile with Oshiomhole.”

He added that six of the governors at the meeting later moved to Abuja, where they held another meeting with Oshiomhole last night. The governors are also expected to hold another meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on the Edo issue today.

While it was not clear whether the APC national chairman gave the governors his words to back down from the battle between him and his predecessor, TNG’s source revealed that among the conditions tabled by members of camp before any negotiation with Obaseki include immediate inauguration of 12 members-elect of the Edo State House of Assembly loyal to Oshiomhole and dropping of the state’s deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, as running mate in the forthcoming governorship election.

“Members of Oshiomhole’s camp are insisting that Governor Obaseki should immediately forward a proclamation to the speaker of the Edo State Assembly for an immediate inauguration of the 12 members-elect of the House, who are yet to take their respective seats since June last year.

“Besides that, they are also demanding that Obaseki should drop his deputy, Shaibu, as running mate. Despite these conditions, the governor is not even sure of getting the party’s ticket as forces oppose to him within Edo APC keep swelling by the day.

Meanwhile, the Edo State chapter of the Association of Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (ALGON) has thrown its weight behind the adoption of indirect primary election by the state chapter of APC to elect the party’s candidate for the gubernatorial election.

Representing Edo State ALGON chairman, the chairman, Etsako Central Local Government Area and vice-chairman of Edo ALGON, Comrade John Akhigbe, at a press briefing yesterday, said it is irresponsible and humanely reckless for any group or an individual to propose a direct primary nomination process for a political party at a time the world is battling with the coronavirus pandemic.

His words: “Edo State chapter of ALGON hereby make clear our resolution that indirect primary is the safest option, the most humane and healthy alternative for the APC 2020 governorship primary.

“Edo State ALGON is shocked that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party opted to conduct a direct primary for the nomination of a governorship candidate in the 2020 gubernatorial election. We believe that members of the NWC will not want to be chronicled as political leaders who willingly sacrificed the lives of their members for ungodly purpose of securing political advantage in an election.”

  • Edo 2020: Obaseki gathering momentum ahead of guber primaries as Oshiomhole remains silent

Edo 2020: Obaseki gathering momentum ahead of guber primaries as Oshiomhole remains silent

    By Emman Ovuakporie

Oshiomhole surprisingly has remained unusually silent since a suspension court order almost removed him from office as Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Multiple sources confirmed to thenewsguru.ng, (TNG) that his silence should not be taken for granted as the comrade is still very much in the trenches to equally outwit the incumbent Governor.

Obaseki is said to be making frantic efforts to get the attention of the Asiwaju, Bola Tinubu to help change the direct mode of primaries to an indirect one adjudged to be favourable to him.

This is just as Prince Edun right hand man of the former Comrade governor has released a memoir which has gone viral on social media giving a narrative of how Oshiomhole shot himself between his legs by imposing Obaseki on Edolites.

In the narrative, the prince said in a bid to cover up, the comrade got a technocrat to rubbish politicians that he was servicing during his tenure.

Unknowingly to the comrade he was imposing a technocrat that knows no Joseph as the new sheriff in town.

The boomerang is what Oshiomhole is heavily paying for now to redeem himself.

He went memory lane tracing the Genesis of political turbulence in Ero to 30years ago before delving into the Oshiomhole years and wrapping it up with Obaseki’s administration.

    Read the memoir in part:

THE GENESIS AND REVELATIONS OF THE FIGHT BTW OSHIOMOLE AND OBASEKI.

    IVBIẸDO N’UZỌMỌN, UWA GI’MAN ROIRO
By HRH PRINCE EDUN AKENZUWA – OGIEOBAZUWA

Oshiomhole requested the writer, as convener of Benin Leaders of Thought, to arrange for him to meet with its members. The meeting was arranged and, on April 3, 2006, he met them at my residence. Before Oshiomhole left, I gave him copies of newspaper articles written against the godfather, godfatherism and the injustice people of Edo South suffer. The articles were written separately by me and other Benin patriots. At that time, the population of Edo South was said to be 62 percent of the State’s population.

After much horse-trading, Comrade Oshiomhole contested the governorship election on the platform of AC against Prof. Oserheime Osunbor of PDP on April 14, 2007. He lost. Oshiomhole appealed against the result. The case went on for nearly one year. At last, the Tribunal ruled in his favour. Thus, he began his dramatic, novel administration in Edo State in 2008.The House of Assembly, then under Speaker Zakawanu Garuba, was controlled by PDP.
His first challenge was to break the solid PDP membership of the House of Assembly. He accused the Speaker of being used by the godfather in Uromi to frustrate his plans for the State. One of the plans was to construct a 6-lane road from Benin Airport to Oba Ovonramwen Square but the godfather saw the estimate and instructed the House to cancel it because the money was too much to be spent on only one road in Benin City and that, the 6-lane road, if it was to be constructed, would affect the Palace wall.

Oshiomhole said he was unabashed about his proposal to spend so much money constructing a modern road in Benin City because he regarded Benin City as the “Living Room of Edo State.”He said since the Living Room is the first place of contact in a house, it gives one an idea how the rest of the house is. He said he has travelled all over the world and seen that roads from airports are multi-lane and big.He said he had also requested the military authorities to swap the Military Hospital land for another piece of land and that when the deal was concluded, he would build a 5-star hotel there, to service the road and the airport.

Omon’Oba Erediauwa, great lover of development, was impressed by Oshiomhole’s plans. The Oba assured him of maximum support. The Oba said if the six-lanes would affect the Palace wall, he would use his own labourers to bring the walls down. The assurance gave Oshiomhole the green light he needed to demolish “illegal” structures in Benin.
Meanwhile, Oshiomhole threw his weight behind BLT’s battle against godfatherism. His life-style was simple. He would stop at a road-side corn-seller’s stall and buy roasted corn. He would cast aside protocol and wear French Suits all about. Sometimes he would shun his security details and live them behind. Some people saw this as a gimmick, but it endeared him to many people who hail “Oshio Baba,” anytime they saw him inspecting contractors at work.

Four years soon elapsed. His first term as governor was over. He visited Oba Erediauwa, as he said, to show him his “report card” and inform him that he would run for a second term. He was accompanied by his deputy, Dr. Pius Egberamwen Odubu. The Oba congratulated him on the successful completion of the “first term”. He was happy that the Comrade Governor never reported at any time, that his deputy was incompetent, disloyal or over-ambitious. The Oba said he was happy because when Chief Lucky Igbinedion, a Benin man was governor, an Etsako man from Edo North, Chief Mike Oghiadomen, was deputy, and he was known to be loyal to his boss. Now Etsako man is governor and a Benin man is deputy. The Oba urged Oshiomhole to go into his second term and continue to work with his team. The statement by the Oba was taken to mean that he endorsed the Governor and his deputy for a second term. It went viral.

Shortly after that, Oshiomhole had a Town Hall meeting at Idia College hall which all traditional rulers in the State attended. He told them he was there to present his “report card” to them. He reeled out his achievements. The traditional rulers gave him a loud ovation. Few weeks later, he invited enigie in Benin to take a bus-ride with him to inspect the stages of work on the Storm Water Project. They saw the massive under-ground drainage at the Ogba Road end of Airport Road. They had never seen anything like that in Benin City. The popularity of the “Miracle Worker” grew in leaps and bounds.
Comrade Adams Oshiomhole showed me the design of a Shopping Mall he planned to build at Forestry Road. To make room for the mall, he compulsorily acquired and demolished a 3-storey building which belonged to the late business man, Mr. Uwagboe Agidigbi. A fly-over was to connect the mall to the near-by Oba Ovoramwen Square. The mall was never built. Did he hand over the design to his successor?

Towards the end of the second year of his second term, a lull had set on some of the projects he started so dramatically. Work had stopped on the Storm Water Project, a 5-star project of his administration. He told Enigie during a meeting with them at the EXCO Chambers that the work would resume when more money was available and that the project would be completed. He also assured them that the Specialist Hospital, another 5-star project, would be completed.
He and his party won the eighteen local government election. He won twenty one seats in the twenty-four-seat House of Assembly. Earlier in his first term, he said he would build three Model Schools, in the State, one in each senatorial district. He graciously agreed to locate the one in Edo South in Obazuwa.

He sent a 12-man delegation to inspect the site in Obazuwa. The delegation was headed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education. They said the land was suitable as it had no hill, valley, or slush. They said another team would be there to physically measure the land which should be 3,000ft x 3,000ft. In anticipation of the team’s visit, community boys were told to measure the land and ensure that it was up to the required dimension.

As the boys were measuring it, militants from Bayelsa State came through Iko and attacked them with cudgels and machetes, claiming that the land belonged to Ijaws. The Governor was promptly informed and he directed his Chief-of-Staff to report the attack to the Commissioner of Police. Policemen were sent to provide protection for the people and to rescue two abducted indigenes. Some of the invaders were arrested and charged to court. The case is still pending at Okada Magistrate’s Court.

The attack by the militants was painful but the governor’s reaction to it was even more so. Instead of him to simply tell the two groups claiming ownership of the land that since it was government going to utilize the land for a project of public interest, he would go ahead with the proposal; he moved it away from Obazuwa to a place in Benin City. The place was water-logged and full of slush. The secondary school there, New Era College, was then battling with the menace. It is believed that Oshiomhole moved the project away from Obazuwa in order not to offend the Ijaws.

Many Benins do not still realize that non-Benin adversaries of the Benin use the Benins to score even for him. They used Benins when they fought Odubu, when they fought Ativie, Benins had the loudest voice against her and when they fought Ize-Iyamu and Igbinedion, Benins were their strongest and swiftest foot-soldiers.

Now it is Obaseki’s turn. The most vociferous of the preachers against him are Benins. Emergency ad-hoc groups spring up daily in Benin setting up trump charges against him. Many of the charges are frivolous. Some accuse him of discontinuing the “laudable” projects started by his predecessor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

They ask: “What happened to the Benin Storm Water Projectand the completed and furnished Central Hospital commissioned by President Muhammad Buhari…” These are some charges they levy against Obaseki. It is like giving a dog a bad name in order to hang it. Who does not know that work on the Storm Water project stopped two years before Obaseki became governor? Who does not know that the Central Hospital was locked up by Oshiomhole a few days after it was commissioned by President Buhari? Who does not know that some of the equipments in the hospital during the commissioning, were borrowed from Stella Obasanjo Hospital for the commissioning? Who does not know that the equipments were returned to Stella Obasanjo Hospital after commissioning?
Those orchestrated criticisms against Obaseki are loudly voiced by Benin people. One of such critics of Obasekiis Governor Oshiomhole’s former Commissioner for justice and Attorney-General, Mr. Henry Idahagon. He signed a press statement on behalf of a so-called “Concerned APC Leaders across the 18 LGA’s of Edo State. As a key member of Oshiomhole’s administration, he is in a position to know that those questions are frivolous and unfounded.

This is the time to advise Benin people to put on the thinking cap, as Hubert Ogunde advised Yorubas when they had their crisis and learn from their neighbours. When Comrade Governor was governor, he had cause to sack two of his commissioners. Incidentally, the two men were from his own ethnic group. They left quietly, without accusing the governor.

    PART 2

The curtain dropped in 2015 on the dramatic scenarios that made Comrade Adams Oshiomhole popular. The honeymoon was over. It was the twilight of his Administration. In July that year, I had a meeting with my brother, the Oba of Benin, Omo n’Oba Erediauwa. He asked me if BLT had begun searching for a successor to the Governor. The Oba named one person he believed would be a suitable successor.

Few months after the meeting, BLT began the process of seeking for a suitable person to succeed the Governor. Oshiomhole had assured me on three different occasions that Benins would themselves nominate the person to succeed him and that he would give the person maximum support. The third occasion he gave me the assurance was on September 16, 2016in my house. He had come to introduce his beautiful spouse to me. He was accompanied by Rev. Micheal Egharevba and his Chief Security Officer (CSO).

We sat in my Study Room where my daughter, (Mrs. Yvonne Osunde) decorated her with coral bead necklace, bangles, and ear-rings. After the short ceremony, she and my daughters moved to the Living Room where Rev. Egharevba and others were sitting.

Alone with Oshiomhole, I raised the issue of his successor, the desire of Benins to choose their own candidate by themselves and his promise to support whoever they chose. He said: “Your Highness, I’ve told you before. I assure you again, Benins will name the man they want. I will give him maximum support. That’s the only way I will show gratitude to our Papa (the Oba) for the support he gave me which led us to this stage. There’s no other way I can show my appreciation of the fatherly support,” I believed him. He sounded earnest.
I disclosed to him the man the Oba believed would be a suitable successor to him and asked him if he would give the man his support. He said he would, if he was a member of his party. He added: “My only fear is the new law made by the party that a person who has not been registered for a given period, cannot run for any position in the party”.

In January 2016, BLT invited fourteen persons known to be interested in the governorship position to came and obtain expression of interest form, free of charge. The fourteen persons, drawn across party lines, were: Prof. Osayuki Oshodin, Prof. S.E. Orobator, Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi, Dr. Pius Odubu, Barr. Osarodion Ogie, Prof. Ernest Izevbigie, Pharm Chris Iyare, Maj-Gen. Charles Airhiavbere, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Sen. Ehigie Uzamere, Chief Solomon Iyobosa Edebiri, Adviser Nowamagbe, Dr. Tonnie Iredia and Col. Wisdom Ogbewekon. Nine of them responded.

Towards the end of October, a rumour burst out that Oshiomhole was going to pick and sponsor a person to succeed him. I did not believe it. Did he not assure me only a month ago that Benins would choose their own man? BLT members who heard the rumour suggested that BLT should issue a statement and re-iterate its position against godfatherism but I did not think BLT should act on a rumour. I requested for time to enable me contact the Governor and find out from him if the rumour was true.

I wrote letters and sent text messages to him requesting for audience. I tried to speak with him on phone. He did not reply my letters and txt messages. I could not reach him on phone. In November, it dawned on me that he did not want to grant me audience. The rumour got stronger, so did the pressure on BLT to issue a press statement. Consequently, a press conference was called on January5, 2016.

After the Press conference, Oshiomhole announced the name of Godwin Obaseki as the person he had chosen to be his successor. Thus, he unilaterally foisted a candidate on Edo people! It was bewildering. What happened to the promise he made to His Majesty, the Omo n’Oba and to the people of Benin? For how long had he nursed the idea of sponsoring a successor? Did he demolish the godfather at Uromi in order to take his place?
In a press interview recently, his former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Mr. Henry Idahagbon, inadvertently confirmed that Oshiomhole is a godfather and also undemocratic. He disclosed that Oshiomhole called him up at 10pm one day and told him he had decided on who would succeed him.

He said: “I have the singular honour of being the first politician the Governor then, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole conferred in on his choice of Godwin Obaseki as a successor… I asked his permission to call Obaseki and inform him. I called him. He was already asleep…Oshiomhole de-odorized him (Obaseki) to sell him to the public because he had made up his mind that Obaseki should be his successor…” (Reliance Newspaper, Number 258 – July 23) Idahagbon also said: “I have been part of many gubernatorial campaigns. I know of leaders collecting N50million, N100 million, just one leader, to support the candidacy of a person. I am not aware of any leader in APC that collected N5 million from Godwin Obaseki. Everybody worked for him, not because of him, but because of the enormous goodwill which Comrade Adams Oshiomhole had. Nobody collected money from him….”

This disclosure shows that the cause of their quarrel with Obaseki is money. Obaseki does not “service” party leaders as Oshiomhole did. Money palaver. Another Oshiomhole’s associate says he is also temperamental and impulsive. They cite the cases of Major Oloye, the widow petty-trader, Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia and the Ojuromi of Uromi, to buttress this.

Oloye was said to have been overzealous while executing an official assignment. Oshiomhole was angry. He got him arrested and carried away to detention in the booth of a car. He was released though, after Oshiomhole cooled down. He compensated Oloye and appointed him as Permanent Secretary.

Ogbemudia was allocated a vehicle by Governor Oserhiemen Osunbor’s Administration. Osunbor was the man who defeated Oshiomhole in the gubernatorial election in 2007 though his victory was over-turned in Oshiomhole’s favour. Ogbemudia was Osunbor’s supporter and Anenih’s friend. Oshiomhole sensationally ordered him to return the vehicle. Ogbemudia complied and returned the vehicle. In his sober moment, Oshiomhole gave him two vehicles to replace the one he took from him.
The widow exhibited her wares in a wheel barrow on the foot-walk near Oba Market. Oshiomhole was angry that she flouted the rule against hawking or selling on the foot walk. He slapped her for breaking the rule. On being informed that she was a widow, he yelled at her: “Go and die”. Later, in his sober moment, he gave her Two million Naira and employed her as his Special Assistant.

Ojuromi, the traditional ruler of Uromi was said to have, gone to a polling station during an election. He saw a lady giving out money to entice people to vote for APC. The Onojie was said to have ordered her to stop doing so. There was an altercation. The Onojie was said to have slapped her and got her pushed away from the polling station. She reported the assault to Oshiomhole who gave the Onojie a query and slammed a week suspension on him.
The lady and her parents went to apologise to the Onojie for their daughter’s exchange of words with the monarch. Being indigenes of Uromi and his subjects, the Onojie forgave them. The atonement by the lady’s family and the pardon by the Onojie, were not good enough for the Governor.

He converted the one-week suspension to out-right dethronement. He did not inform the State Council of Traditional Rulers, a body set up to advise government on traditional matters, of the Onojie’s action.

Oshiomhole left office without doing anything about the dethronement. The people of Uromi appealed to His Majesty Oba Ewuare II to intervene. Following the Oba’s intervention, Governor Obaseki lifted the order and restored the Onojie to his throne.
When the Proclamation Letter issue started, the Benin monarch and other traditional rulers in the State severally, intervened to resolve the matter between Oshiomhole and Obaseki. They did not succeed. The Oba then led the Traditional Rulers in the State to Abuja to appeal to President Buhari to reconcile Oshiomhole and Obaseki, both of whom are Edo sons and members of APC.
Before the President reacted to the request, Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of APC, looked the other way while Ihonvbere and Akpatason, both also Edos and APC members of the House of Representatives, raised a motion in the House calling the House to take over Edo State House of Assembly. That show of disrespect to our Traditional Fathers was reminiscent of Oshiomhole’s dethronement of the Ojuromi without the courtesy of informing the State Council of Traditional Rulers.

A group that calls itself Edo People’s Movement, EPM, does not want Obaseki to return for the second term. The group which says it is a group within the State APC, expressed concern that APC would lose the State if Obaseki was allowed to run in 2020. According to the group, Obaseki told the Party’s State Secretary, Mr. Lawrence Okah, to resign because of his “closeness” to the National Chairman, Comrade Oshiomhole (Vanguard, May 28 p. 16).

Why would the Governor of a state, who is a member of APC, be angry that the secretary of his party is close to the National Chairman of the party? Did the BMC, report the governor to the State APC? What did it say or do about it?
Idahagbon said they did not read Obaseki rightly before making him governor. “We saw him as a cool, quiet and urbane gentleman, soft spoken. In his own way likeable, a reluctant politician. He was never interested in politics. He got his APC card barely six months or a year before the elections. Any time you tell him about politics, his response was “no, no, no. I am not interested; Politicians and their wahala.” He was very dismissive of politicians and politics. Unfortunately looking back in retrospect we didn’t read him rightly. We read him so very wrongly…”

In order to put in its proper perspective this statement by Idahagbon should read what another of Oshiomhole’s close associate, Lukman, says. Lukman, said he known Oshiomhole in his trade unionist days. According to him, Oshiomhole used to call him and two others “dogged fighters.”
Lukman says: “Lukman here is Godwin. I’m not sure you have met him before but let me tell you that he has been part of my idea of my being a governor. He was operating from the Lagos axis and I can say he organized the first fund-raising that made money available for my initial activities here in Benin while in government, he is the head of our economic team and the brain behind the success of my government…..

“It will shock you to know that Godwin rendered this huge service to the State without being paid, either as allowances or as salaries”. Then with a sense of finality and, in characteristic display of his usual authoritative Oshiomhole concluded: “I’m going to hand-over to Godwin so you people should work together…..”

“….With that, I stood up, had a hand-shake with Comrade and Godwin, and departed for a birthday party for which I was already running late….My phone rang. Behold, it was Comrade Governor calling. I had to leave for a meeting with Oga. I met Oga in the house with Barrister Henry Idahagbon, the then Attorney. Idahagbon of the State and Hon. Victor Enobakhare, the then Egor LG Council Chairman. They were discussing the issue of paying the accumulated unpaid salaries of Egor LG workers.

“…the matter of my successor has gone beyond personal or emotional consideration. First and foremost, the present financial position of the state is not as strong as our people want to think or believe. The good thing is that even though we are in heavy debts, we used the borrowed funds for infrastructural development, especially the Benin Water Storm project. Only Godwin understands how the money was borrowed, the repayment plans and the conditions attached.

The Benin water storm project has not been concluded but we have made appreciable progress, even though it is not easy for our people to understand how such humongous amount was spent. It was our plan to use the funds to undertake the water storm project and open up the main roads; Airport Rod, Akpakpava Road, Siluko Road etc. so that my successor would undertake the reconstruction of the link roads…..

“You see, Lukman, the state cannot survive a new governor, who is a politician, someone who has political structures and party leaders to service someone who is generous with funds. I chose Godwin because he has no political network to cater for… he would be very heartless and brutal to politicians. Godwin has never come to terms with why I should be giving public monies to politicians, monies they never worked for, according to his perception of it…..”

One will see from the above excerpts that Oshiomhole brought Obaseki into politics as an instrument he wanted to use to execute his pre-conceived programme and policy.

Oshiomhole, like Idahagbon, knows that Obaseki does not like politics and politicians. He knows he is frugal and has “not come to terms” with the way he gives out public money. In this triangle – Oshiomhole, Obaseki and Idhagbon who has misread each other? It seems Idahagbon has misread Oshiomhole.

Finally, all TRUE Benin should realize that the present battle is not between Oshiomhole and Obaseki but between Oshiomhole and corporate Benin. Ivbiedo, uwag’imanroiro.

Obaseki vows to bring Oshiomhole to book as Judicial Inquiry indicts ex-gov

The Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the construction of the Edo Specialist Hospital and supply of equipment for the hospital has indicted the administration of the former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, for breach of the state’s Public Procurement Law.

Chairman of the Commission, Justice James Oyomire (rtd), who presented the commission’s findings to Governor Godwin Obaseki, at Government House, in Benin City, on Thursday, said the award of the contract for the construction of the hospital was fraught with breaches of the state’s procurement laws.

According to him, the law clearly states that any contractor working on a government project should not receive more than 25 percent upfront payment upon contract award, which Oshiomhole’s administration contravened.

“The immediate past administration paid 75 percent of the contract sum upfront for the project to Vamed Engineering,” Justice Oyomire said.

He added that part of the commission’s 8-point recommendation includes that the Ministry of Justice should institute civil and criminal actions against those found culpable in the breach of the law.

The recommendations, according to him, also include the strengthening of the state’s public procurement agency and ensuring strict adherence to the provision of the agency’s law on award of contract.

Obaseki, while receiving the report, assured that anyone found culpable, no matter how highly-placed, would be called to account for their action.

Obaseki said: “We have been putting the right measures in place and if there are resources of government that need to be returned, we will not hesitate to ask for it.

“Since I came into office, you cannot find this type of breach you have mentioned. If people have to face prosecution, whether civil or criminal, they will have to be prosecuted.

“When you are given a public trust, so much is expected from you and there is a responsibility to maintain that public trust. We want to build institutions and not individuals because individuals will come and go, but institutions will remain.

“The people who have the opportunity of rebuilding the system took further steps in destroying the already weakened system. We shall seat down and thoroughly review this report.”

When contacted, Victor Oshioke, a spokesman of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, declined comment, saying that he was yet to see the report.

“I’ve not seen the report, so I cannot respond to it. One cannot respond to what he has not seen. It is when we have seen it that we can react,” he said.

You’re a serial liar, Oshiomhole was not part of any mock primary, Edo APC leaders tell Obaseki

… say give account of N350bn your Government received
…vow to replace him as governor
…provide video evidence for your allegation that more than 50 people were gathered anywhere in Edo

All Progressives Congress, APC leaders in Edo State on Thursday described the Governor of the state , Godwin Obaseki as a serial liar for dragging the name of the party’s Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole into the mock primary that he was not involved.

Apparently peeved by the governor’s comment calling on the Federal Government to hold Oshiomhole responsible if he fails to curb spread of the Covid-19 in the state.
The leaders poopoohed his claim declaring that despite collecting N350billion from various sources yet there’s nothing on ground to show.
    Hear the leaders:

We, the underlisted, represent the several thousands of APC leaders, stakeholders and members In Edo State whose determination to replace Mr Godwin Obaseki in the forthcoming gubernatorial election is unwavering. Not every leader deserving to endorse the following statement could have their names included hereunder for want of space.

Our attention has been severally drawn to publications by Governor Godwin Obaseki and his agents in a section of the press, alleging that the National Chairman of APC, organized a “mock primary” in Edo State on April 30, 2020, purportedly to pick a candidate for the Gubernatorial election in Edo State. He further alleged that the meeting had over 50 persons in attendance, thereby flouting his government’s directives on the fight against Covid-19 pandemic in the state.

We hereby vehemently deny any involvement of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in our activities. We also state emphatically that there was no crowded meeting of 20 persons or more by this body of APC Leaders anywhere in Edo State in recent time. We hereby challenge Mr Godwin Obaseki to prove his allegation of a crowded “meeting of more than 50 persons” by releasing a video of such event. A look at the list of those who issued this statement on behalf of our teeming members will expose the rudeness in describing us as puppets of Oshiomhole by Mr Obaseki in the statement under reference.

The twisted narrative by Mr Obaseki, is meant to drag the National Chairman, Comrade Oshiomhole’s name into our activities in order to blackmail him. This is an ongoing but over used strategy for his ill-fated campaign for second tenure. We state unequivocally that we are not intimidated by Mr Obaseki’s hackneyed bashing of and disrespect for the former Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, whose excellent performance in government remains the selling points for our party till date.

Contrary to the resort to personalised attacks by Godwin Obaseki on the National Chairman, who is not contesting any election, we are confronting Mr Obaseki with the evidence of bad governance, mindless embezzlement of state funds, destruction of democratic culture, wicked demonization of those on whose backs he rose to power and systematic destruction of APC, the platform that brought him to power.

BAD GOVERNANCE AND MASSIVE EMBEZZLEMENT OF STATE FUNDS.
As at April 2020, Edo State Government under Godwin Obaseki has netted about N350bn ( Three hundred and fifty billion Naira). The bulk is made up of Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) disbursements and Internally Generated Revenue, all amounting to about N300bn, Bail Out fund N17.5bn and Paris Club Excess deductions Refund, enhanced by exchange rate differentials, making up the balance.

Against this huge funds, never seen before in Edo State, there are practically no projects to justify the expenditure of the huge receipts.
All promises, celebrated signing of MOUs, deceptive adverts inviting tenders and even inviting the Vice President on state visit to flag off construction of INDUSTRIAL PARK, came to nothing.
There is not a single project worthy of commissioning as Mr Obaseki moves towards the end of his tenure.

Even in the current fight against Covid-19, he does not care about the sufferings of the people but he is busy converting the opportunity for embezzlement, embarking on political campaign in the 192 wards under the guise of personal sensitization campaign against coronavirus. The state was shocked when he announced they had already spent over One billion Naira on the pandemic within two weeks. Till today there is no lockdown in Edo state in order to avoid spending on palliatives. Yet he moved markets to school premises in the entire state with a promise to fumigate the markets statewide. No fumigation has been carried out and the school premises are fast becoming Refuse dumps. Huge crowds are crammed into whatever space in the schools without social distancing. He ordered people to wear face-masks but his government did not provide any for the poor masses. The number of infected people is growing exponentially, he doesn’t care.

DESTRUCTION OF DEMOCRATIC CULTURE AND INSTITUTIONS.
House of Assembly elections were held on the 9th of March 2019 and APC won all 24 seats, but till today Mr Godwin Obaseki would not properly make a proclamation and facilitate the orderly swearing in of every member. He spirited away 10 of the members who were cajoled to choose his preferred member as Speaker. A caricature of the solemn event was conducted at night for those 10 who were funnily clad as shown on social media. 14 members-elect have been debarred from exercising their mandate till today. Thugs were deployed to hound them into exile, for insisting on doing the right thing democratically. Worse still, he has killed the democratic principle of check and balances in Edo State Government rendered 14 state constituencies unrepresented.

Any one who disagrees with Obaseki in Edo State is endangered. Thugs are deployed at will and agencies of government are sent as hounds to make life miserable for such persons. Bombs have been thrown into people’s homes resulting in massive destructions but curiously no arrests were made.

    SYSTEMATIC ATTEMPT TO DESTROY APC.
Mr Obaseki attempted to annex the party secretariat as a department of his Government House and the dispute arising from that, led him to unilaterally purport to change the party executives. He and his government have refused to be guided by the party’s constitution and he rushes to court to procure injunctions to frustrate party discipline without exhausting internal mechanism for resolution of dispute.
He has actively frustrated the admission of new members from time to time.

Given these and many other destructive tendencies, We, as respected leaders of the party are consulting among ourselves and we will come up with one of the many Aspirants, whom we will mobilize and vote for at the forthcoming primaries in June to replace Mr Godwin Obaseki.
Lies against and even blackmail of Comrade Oshiomhole by Mr Obaseki will not stop us from rescuing our dear State from his misrule.

  • Hold Oshiomhole responsible if COVID-19 cases, deaths increases in Edo, Obaseki tells Buhari

The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has accused the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, of violating directives to halt the spread of coronavirus disease in the state.

The governor, in a statement by the Special Adviser to the state Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie and the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Paul Ohonbamu, accused the former governor of the state of organizing political gatherings through the Edo Peoples Movement (EPM).

The statement noted that the ‘illegal meeting termed APC faction mock primary’ allegedly organized by Comrade Oshiomhole did not only go against the directives of the state and federal government, but also jeopardised efforts to contain COVID-19, thereby endangering the lives of Edo people.

The governor said the former governor’s actions were not only reprehensible but callous and selfish, as he had continued his quest to cause crisis in the state and destabilise the state’s chapter of the APC amid COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the statement, “It is not surprising that Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has continued his doom-fated attempt to destabilise the Edo State chapter of the APC. But what is most unconscionable is that he is propagating this move at the expense of the safety and wellbeing of Edo people.

“By organizing the supposed mock primary on April 30, 2020, with more than 50 persons in attendance, he is undermining efforts of different stakeholders in containing the spread of the virus and also dishonouring all those who have died from this virus. Those who organised the political gathering initially held at Lucky Imasuen’s residence in Benin City later moved to different locations to continue their inglorious show of shame, in perpetuation of the wishes of their puppet master.

“The antics of Comrade Oshiomhole are well-known, but it bears repeating that he is on a mission to re-enact what happened in Rivers, Zamfara and Bayelsa in Edo State. He has continued to perpetuate the factionalising of the party in the state, with an intent to cause the party to lose its opportunity to participate in the forthcoming gubernatorial election.”

Noting that the actions of the former labour leader have compromised government’s efforts to halt the spread of coronavirus in the state, the statement urged the Presidency and the leadership of the APC at the National level to reign in Oshiomhole from destabilizing the Edo State chapter of the party.

The statement therefore urged President Muhammadu Buhari to as a matter of urgency, call the national chairman of the APC to order.

“The President should know that Oshiomhole’s orchestrated disharmony is a testimony of his desire to re-enact Rivers and Zamfara in Edo State.

“The action is not only anti-party, but a confirmation in some circles of a deliberate decimation of our great Party for clandestine ambitions.

“It must be said that Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, not shown remorse for the persons lost to this invisible enemy.

“While Nigeria was losing eminent sons and daughters to the pandemic, for instance, he released videos of himself in a gym house, performing aerobics, as if mocking the dead.

“This was at a time the entire country was mourning the death of the Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari.

“This, among other, indiscretions have painted Comrade Oshiomhole in the most despicable light and leaves much to be desired of his humanity,” the statement said.

Oshiomole recounts interesting encounters with late Abba Kyari that go back to 1973

National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole on Sunday reacted to the demise Abba Kyari, late Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Oshiomhole in a special tribute he signed and released President Buhari just lost a dependable lieutenant and a close ideological disciple.

He said the late Kyari fought for the downtrodden and conscientiously pursued the common good without seeking personal glory.

Oshiomhole recalled his encounter with Kyari in 1973 in their days at the Zamfara Textile in Kaduna.

    Read his full tribute below:

Farewell, My Friend and Authentic Comrade

    By Comrade Adams Oshiomhole

There are two most important dates in a man’s life. Other than the day he was born, according to Mark Twain, the other day is the day he discovers why he was born.

Doubtless, Mallam Abba Kyari realised his own purpose early enough: a conscientious pursuit of common good without seeking personal glory.

My first encounter with him was not in the corridors of power in Abuja, but in a very humble environment back in 1973.

In the last five years of the Buhari presidency, Mallam Kyari surely meant different things to different folks as the Chief of Staff.
Perhaps the popular perception is that he was the embodiment of loyalty to President Muhammadu Buhari and an abiding patriotism to Nigeria.

But to confine his profile to his last official address is to miss the full height of the essential Abba Kyari and lose the broader picture of a life devoted entirely to fighting for the under-privileged, even though quietly.
Indeed, those who knew him would never begrudge him; those who resented him had obviously never the chance of truly knowing him.

I say this with the authority of one whose intimate association with him dates back to the days of Zamfara Textile in Kaduna.
I will illustrate with a few anecdotes.
Way back in 1973, we had found ourselves in opposing sides of the isle at Zamfara Textile in Kaduna: I was the leader of the workers union while he represented the management as Admin Officer.

But in the many brushes the union had with the management, Abba Kyari showed a true character as a conscientious man, a true Nigerian patriot, by never failing to side with workers on the core issues of human dignity and fairness. Following our protest, he was the lone voice at the management meeting who spoke against the operation of two classes of canteen by the company. He was not afraid to state that having a uniform canteen for both management staff and junior workers was the only way to convince the junior workers that their meal was not inferior.

Similarly, even though he was supposed to be on the side of the “oppressor”, Abba Kyari persuaded the management to incur extra costs by issuing all factory workers two pairs of personal protective uniform and safety boots.

The amazing thing was that, in pushing our case with management every time, Abba Kyari never sought to be seen or worshipped as a “hero”.
For him, advocating for social justice was not a favor, but a duty.

Again, when nobody believed in the chances of then General Buhari ever upstaging the behemoth PDP, Abba Kyari’s faith was unshaken.
I recall he was the one that first approached me in 2002 as the National President of Nigeria Labour Congress to sell Buhari’s candidacy to the labour movement. He invested his personal resources, energy and wide contacts in the business world in the project.

To say he shared President Buhari’s passion for a Nigeria that works for the vast majority as against the interest of a buccaneering elite is an understatement. It is partly the reason that Abba Kyari was never the darling of those used to gaming the system and their collaborators in western capitals.

That natural instinct to fight for the downtrodden was very much on display in 2016 when the Buhari administration was barely a year in office and the nation found herself in economic recession inflicted by the mismanagement of the economy by the previous administration.
I was still Edo Governor then. I recall that Abba Kyari, just like President Buhari, was quite stubborn in opposing the devaluation of naira. Just as they were averse to the removal of petrol subsidy. In several official meetings we had then in Abuja, you could always see the sadness on their faces when the matter came up and when the decision became inevitable. They were unhappy that such policies would hurt the vulnerable and erode the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians.

Abba Kyari was not only loyal to President Buhari, he was also faithful to friends through thick and thin. His sense of humour was phenomenal. I recall that whenever we met and I complained that the stress of running the office of National Chairman was such that I had little time to socialize with old friends like him, he would tease by saying, “If a young man like you is complaining of stress as ordinary National Chairman of a party, I wonder what you expect someone like President Buhari who is running the entire country at his age and with all he has been through since the 60s and is still making sacrifices today, to say.”

In summary, there is no doubt that President Buhari has lost a dependable lieutenant and a close ideological disciple. Words cannot express our grief at this hour. But compatriots, we are comforted that Abba Kyari was a man of stellar character, a workhorse who toiled day and night to advance President Buhari’s vision, a luminous torchbearer for the progressives’ community and a committed advocate of the downtrodden who fought for them quietly without seeking personal glory.

The verdict of history will surely be kinder to him than the one borne out of whatever might be the reading or misunderstanding of his contemporary role in some quarters.

May Allah grant him peaceful repose and comfort his family and Mr. President over this great loss.

    Farewell, my authentic comrade.

    Signed:

Comrade Adams Aliu Oshiomhole, mni, CON
    Chairman, All Progressives Party.
