Edo 2020: Thugs invade venue of Oshiomhole’s rally, burn vehicles, chairs, canopies

The face-off between Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, got messier on Saturday, as unidentified thugs overnight set ablaze vehicles, canopies and chairs parked at the venue to be used for a political rally in Auchi, Estako West local government area.

The rally which was to hold at an open ground owned by a private individual, was said to have been organised by Oshiomhole to receive some defectors into the APC.

Sources had it that the suspected thugs who invaded the venue at about 2 am, shot sporadically before they set ablaze over 1000 chairs, the podium, several canopies and two vehicles.

It was learnt that heavy security was being deployed to the area to forestall further attack.

A chieftain of the APC in the State who confirmed the incident described it as a new dimension in Edo politics.

The party chieftain urged security agents to fish out the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

“It is very unfortunate at this time. While we are awaiting the police to do their investigation, we want to say that it is quite unexpected and want the security agents to ensure that those responsible are brought to book, because, it is a new dimension in politicking in Edo state, that nobody can meet peacefully, something that is guaranteed by the Constitution.

“It’s getting too much, we experienced it in Benin and again we are experiencing it in Auchi. It is very unfortunate.

“They should let Edo people express their freedom in choosing who rules them. That is our position at this time,” He said.

Imo Judgement: Oshiomhole has become mouthpiece of Supreme Court – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lambasted the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Adams Oshiomhole, for attempting to politicise the judgment of the Supreme Court on the Imo State governorship election, despite evident consensus by the generality of Nigerians for a review.

The party described as loathsome, that Oshiomhole could resort to hauling insults and “gutter language” on Nigerians, including PDP leaders, in his desperate bid to divert public attention from the “perversion of justice” by the Supreme Court in favour of the APC.

In a statement on Saturday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party said Oshiomhole was desperate to blur public agitation against injustice.

The PDP accused the APC of being in league with the Justice Mohammed Tanko-led Supreme Court in perverting justice in the Imo governorship election judgment, as well as the heinous plots to use the apex court to take over other PDP-controlled states of Bauchi, Sokoto, Adamawa and Benue.

“The PDP is aware of why Oshiomhole has suddenly become the mouth piece of the Supreme Court.

“We have reliable information that certain Justices of the Court have been blaming APC leaders and the Presidency for compromising and dragging them into the disgraceful plots; the reason Oshiomhole now desperately seeks to politicise the issue and divert public attention as a stop gap measure.

“This attempt is indeed dead on arrival as the PDP, standing with the generality of Nigerians and lovers of democracy all over the world, will not relent in mobilising the citizens in pursuit of an end to this and many other injustices that pervade our nation presently.

“Of course, Oshiomhole and Justice Tanko Mohammed are reminded that, as stated by Thomas Jefferson, ‘when injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty”, the party said.

The main opposition party vowed that nothing, not even the ranting of a character like Adams Oshiomhole, can stop over 180 million Nigerians from speaking out against injustice, particularly at the Supreme Court, as injustice to one is injustice to all.

The PDP said it’s however not surprising that the chairman of the APC could only resort to hauling insults instead of addressing the issues.

Continuing, the party said, “Apparently, Oshiomhole thinks that by championing injustice and promoting impunity in his party and its government, he will escape his journey to jail for allegedly looting billions of naira belonging to Edo state, when he was governor.

“Nigerians can recall that since Oshiomhole found his way as National Chairman of APC, he has contributed nothing to the development of politics and democracy, except promoting injustice, encouraging looting, fuelling crisis and violence, elevating thuggery as a talent and fouling our public space with gutter language, hate speech, meddling and quarrelling.

“We are not surprised because his former lieutenants have told the world that thuggery is his area of strength in politics.

“However, we counsel Oshiomhole to learn that politics is about respect for the rule of law and good governance. It is different from thuggery and quarreling, which he has now become notorious for.

“Indeed, the PDP agrees no less with the description already in the public, that the minds of certain individuals are as their outward looks”.

The party vowed not to be distracted by a “political thug” who can only find space in a party like the APC where “hoodlums, fraudsters, certificate forgers and compromisers of the courts” are critical stakeholders.

It added that in spite of all the attacks, the PDP will still not be deterred but will remain focus with the generality of Nigerians in its irrevocable determination to take all steps necessary to reverse the injustice on Imo, as well as stop the APC on its trail to use the Supreme Court to take over states lawfully won by the PDP.

The party said it would not stop its demand for the review and reversal of the injustice done in the Imo State governorship election by the Supreme Court. “On this, we stand”.

Imo verdict: Oshiomhole replies PDP for ‘reckless’ attack on Supreme Court, demanding CJN’s resignation

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, has described the attack of the Supreme Court by the Peoples Democratic Party as reckless and dangerous.

In a stunning verdict, the apex court on Tuesday nullified the election of Governor Emeka Ihedioha of the PDP and declared Senator Hope Uzodinma of the APC as Governor of Imo State.

The PDP on Thursday disparaged the Justice Tanko-led Supreme Court panel that heard the governorship appeal on Imo and asked it to recuse itself from the pending cases on Bauchi, Sokoto, Benue and Adamawa states.

Addressing journalists on Friday at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, Oshiomhole accused the PDP of attempting to blackmail the Justices of the Supreme Court.

He said the PDP which was a beneficiary of electoral fraud tried to deepen the culture of do-or-die politics, stressing that the former ruling party lacked the credentials to disparage the judiciary because of their antecedents.

Oshiomhole said democracy had worked and rule of law had prevailed when the PDP won in courts, while there should be no judiciary again if the APC won her cases in courts.

He said the APC still has reservations over the rulings on Rivers and Zamfara that denied the party opportunities to produce governors and the loss of senatorial seats in Ekiti and Sokoto States.

Oshiohmole, who said the PDP laid the foundation for votes rigging in the polity, gave an assurance that the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration would do all within its powers to ensure electoral reform before the end of his tenure.

“For PDP and Secondus to call for the resignation of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) because they have lost a state that was never theirs is the height of recklessness,” Oshiomhole added.

No more war! Oshiomhole, Okorocha, Uzodinma reunite, celebrate Supreme Court victory [Video]

The victory of Hope Uzodinma at the Supreme Court has reunited the new Imo state governor with his political enemy, Rochas Okorocha, and the national chairman of the ruling party, Adams Oshiomhole.

The APC primaries that produced Uzodinma as the candidate of the party had torn the Imo state chapter of the party apart.

The former Imo state governor, Okorocha, had wanted his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, to succeed him as the next governor of the state.

Following Nwosu’s failure to secure the party’s ticket, Okorocha withdrew his support for the APC threw his weight behind Nwosu who had crossed to the Action Alliance (AA) to contest the election as its flagbearer.
Okorocha who is now representing Imo West at the Senate also tacked Oshiomhole then, accusing him of causing the crisis that ensued from the party’s primaries.

However, after months of legal battle, the Supreme Court has declared Uzodinma as the duly elected governor and sacked Emeka Ihedioha.

In a recent video making the rounds on the internet, the three key APC stakeholders were seen jubilating and rejoicing together…

Irate youths chase Obaseki’s aide out of Oshiomhole’s residence

Chairman of Edo State Local Government Service Commission, Mr. Tom Uloko, was harassed and chased out of the country home of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

Uloko, who served as Commissioner under Oshiomhole as Governor, claimed he was invited for lunch.

In a viral video, Uloko was seen being asked to walk out of Oshiomhole house at Iyamho in Estako West local government.

Uloko was accused by the youths of not working in the interest of Oshiomhole.

One of the youths was heard saying Uloko was among the leaders in Ward 10 that signed the suspension of Oshiomhole from the APC.

Uloko explained to the youths that he was at the residence at the instance of Oshiomhole.

He said: “You don’t know politics. I was invited here.”

Uloko could not be reached for comments as calls to his cell phone went unanswered.

Spokesman to Oshiomhole, Mr, Simon Ebegbulem, also did not pick calls to his phone.

2023: Oshiomhole reveals those fueling rumours of Buhari’s third term agenda

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomole has accused the PDP of planting the alleged third term agenda of President Buhari in the media.

President Buhari in his New Year’s day letter to Nigerians once again dismissed rumors that he will be seeking a third term in office.

Addressing the State House correspondents after meeting with President Buhari on Thursday, January 2nd, Oshiomhole alleged that the PDP planted the idea of third term agenda by President Muhammadu Buhari in the sub-conscious of most Nigerians to further confuse the political space.

According to the former governor, “It is still in the sub-consciousness of most Nigerians that the first (sic) Nigerian President tried to do Third Term, emptied the treasury to bribe members of the National Assembly and since that President left, thanks to the National Assembly, no other next President has done eight years in office.”

“You can recall that President Yar’Adua, unfortunately, has since joined his ancestors, and President Jonathan did six years and so by the special grace of God, this President (Buhari) whom we pray will do his eight years complete in line with the provision of the constitution.”

“And because there is a level of idleness within a section of the political class people can sponsor all kinds of publications and to give doubt whether or not the President is planning to stay longer. And I think it is his decision that at every interval he needs to remind Nigerians that he is not about to do what a PDP President did. For me it is necessary and in any case it costs us nothing to reassure us that `I am leaving.’’ he said

Oshiomole also reacted to some members of the ruling party calling for his resignation as the chairman of the party.

“It’s a tree that bears fruits that attracts stone. You hardly see people throwing stone at a dry tree palm tree. But if you see a mango tree when it is its season, people throw stones at it when passing, he said.

“I think that is my lot but my report card is also very very clear. You, my comrades should also help in interrogating the process, how a performance of a National Working Committee of a political party should be evaluated? But I think the evaluation should start mostly, how many elections did you lose, or lost.”

“Last week we saw the British Labour Party Leader that he accepts responsibility for the crushing defeat that the Labour Party suffered under his leadership, he offered in principle having accept responsibility, will not lead the party in the next election, so he is going to resign because under his leadership the party was rejected by the British electorate.”

“In my own case, and I challenge anyone to say that any of these things are not true. We the executive members of the party were sworn in on June 3, 2018, at about 6 p.m. Two weeks later, we went to Ekiti to contest election against a PDP incumbent governor Fayose and we won. Kayode Fayemi today is the governor of that state.”

“Few months later, we went to Osun State, we contested a by-election, we won and we had the Osun State governor elected for his first term. Then we went for the national elections, you know all the tensions in the country at the time.”

“The gap between President Buhari and the former candidate of the PDP Abubakar Atiku was about four million voters. The one between President Buhari and former President Jonathan in 2015 was about three million.”

“So under my leadership, this President has more votes than the first runner-up, we would like to claim credit for that because if it went the other way so we would be crucified” he added.

Edo: Oshiomhole turning into godfather after cajoling me to fight same – Obaseki

Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo, said he was led into politics after Adams Oshiomhole convinced him to join forces against godfatherism in the state.

Obaseki revealed this while hosting ward leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oredo local government area of the state.

Obaseki said Adams Oshiomhole, former governor of the state, called him into the fight against godfatherism but now “reneging on the mandate”.

“Comrade Oshiomhole came to me, asking that we join forces to fight and bring an end to the practice of godfatherism in the state, ” he said.

“The partnership helped us in changing the narrative of development in the state. This led me into politics. I am into politics to better the lives of Edo people. We believed Oshiomhole and followed him to fight godfatherism.

“He said godfatherism is not good but today he is saying godfatherism is good. He said let the people lead but today he wants to lead the people, against their interest.”

He said with the resources available in the state, the people have no business being poor, and that the bad leadership style adopted in the past was responsible for poverty.

“Any politics that doesn’t benefit the majority of the people is bad politics. The resources we have in the state is to be used for the benefits of the people of Edo State, not a few politicians,” he said.

“Our people have no business being poor but our leadership has brought us here.”

The governor said he is confident he would secure the ticket of his party for a second term in office.

“I am in politics to improve the life of Edo people. We have done more in three years with less resources. Imagine what will happen in eight years,” he said.

“When they say I am a mosquito, I was never worried; I told them that mosquitoes can bite. The bite can cause malaria and if not well-treated, it can kill someone. Those bitten are already on life support but we pray they don’t die.

“The last time an incumbent ran for governorship in our party in the state, it was a consensus.

“It will happen again; we will all agree on a consensus. Whether direct or indirect primary, you, the people, will vote. Our plan is on the election, not the primaries.

“God has continued to fight for us. All the strategies and antics against this government has failed. We will build this party and you will be the envy of all others who are not in our party but we are sure they will join us soon.”

  • 2020: APC’ll survive Oshiomhole-Obaseki war, but it’s beginning of the end

2020: APC’ll survive Oshiomhole-Obaseki war, but it’s beginning of the end

    Azu Ishiekwene

In an article entitled “2019: How Atiku will lose – and other matters,” published this time last year, I made six predictions: 1) Atiku will lose 2) despite Access Bank having Diamond Bank for supper, there won’t be a rat race for size among banks and liquidity will get tighter 3) Super Eagles will reach the semi-finals of the Nations cup and Gerhot Rohr will still be in charge 5) Manchester City will win the premier league, despite being third on the table and seven points adrift at the time 6) the telcos may finally get licences to upgrade to status of payment service banks.

It happened 100 percent – every single prediction. Google it.

Here we go again. I’m shooting at a few things that I’ve been thinking about and shooting straight. If I goof, I goof. A betting man can take this to the bank – no ifs, no buts, no mays.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, will survive as party chairman, despite the nasty war with his party man and protegee, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo.

It sounds counter-intuitive, because the odds appear stacked against Oshiomhole. His mismanagement of the party primaries that cost the APC four states with accusations in a number of states that the primaries were mostly a bazaar; his iron-fist style of resolving disputes; and most potently, allegations that his resort to godfather politics in Edo is making former PDP strongman, Tony Anenih, look like a saint, should, ordinarily, finish him off.

To top it all, his recent red-carpet reception in Edo for a politician he once openly described as a thief; while at the same time reaching across the border to grab a coveted post in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), as bribe for his former deputy who he muscled out of a fair contest for the party’s governorship ticket in Edo in 2016, ought to make Oshiomhole past tense in the new year.

But that will not happen. It’s not because the APC chairman will – or can – save himself in the heady days to come. Two major incidents will conspire to keep him hanging by a thread as the party’s chairman this year.

One, big APC guns interested in 2023 will fight tooth and nail to keep Oshiomhole beyond 2020, at least. And by big guns here, I’m thinking specifically of President Muhammadu Buhari and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Some APC governors will intensify efforts to remove Oshiomhole, but this cat will have his ninth life, at least, till year-end.

Buhari and Tinubu have different interests for wanting Oshiomhole to stay on a bit longer, and their voices remain the most consequential in the party. While Buhari’s reluctance is largely as result of his legendary lethargy about sacking people generally once he has appointed them, Tinubu’s case is more strategic.

If indeed he is interested in running for the presidency in 2023, as has been widely speculated, it would be foolish to instigate the removal of the party chairman over whom he maintains considerable leverage, almost three full years to the general election.

The average lifespan of party chairmen in Nigeria’s major parties in the last two decades is 18 months. If Oshiomhole is removed in 2020, his successor will be removed before his party’s election convention, perhaps in 2022.

With two governorship elections – Edo and Ondo – coming up in 2020, sacking the party chairman who is just in his second year will have implications for party cohesion, loyalty and electoral math. It’s a risk that APC will be very reluctant to take.

Keep in mind, too, that it’s in the nature of our politics to retain in office the vulnerable, the wounded and the blighted for as long as possible. Oshiomhole’s weakness and shortcomings are a familiar parable in the APC household, a parable known to him and to those who will continue to use it as leverage for now.

Two, the governorship election in Edo has been framed as the make-or-mar, the peak of all events in Edo this year, with consequences on the national stage. I predict that it will be an anti-climax.

The charade of Oshiomhole receiving Osagie Ize-Iyamu into APC on a red carpet, and Obaseki drawing a line in the sand, are political gimmicks meant by one side to test the endurance limits of the other.

The certainty of mutually assured destruction should the APC fail to resolve the problem before the end of this quarter, will compel the two sides to pull back from brinksmanship before the primaries likely in April. They will then bury the hatchet in the back of the PDP and the press, leaving only a small redeeming window for the hapless state lawmakers who have been the cannon fodder in this long, dirty war.

But the scars will linger on. They will pile on the mountain of grievances against Oshiomhole’s continued stay as chairman and feed the growing anxiety that APC may not survive a post-Buhari era; at least not in its present form or shape.

That anxiety is not misplaced. By the last quarter of this year, the cracks in APC will be clear as daylight; the PDP will also be in a shambles and the disruption will pave the way to another coalition.

The closed land borders will be re-opened, partially, in the first quarter of this year and all the campaigns about the billions being saved will end abruptly without any concrete alternative plan.

Although the official explanation will be that neighbouring countries have repented, domestic inflationary pressure on top of criticisms that the prolonged closure is incompatible within Nigeria’s obligation as a signatory to the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, and the introduction of Eco, will force the government to budge.

2020 is the year when government will see only the colour of money. With a deficit nearly the size of the 2020 budgets of Chad, Benin and Togo combined or roughly half of Ghana’s 2020 budget, the Nigerian government will be hard pressed to find avenues to plug the shortfall of nearly N2.2trillion. The government is coming for your wallet.

In a highly restricted tax digest newsletter by Banwo & Ighodalo called “Grey Matter,” subscribers were informed that the 2020 appropriation law, imposes higher rates for certain existing taxes and subjects some previously exempted incomes like the Petroleum Profit Tax, company’s excess profit, dependents’ reliefs from personal income, to tax. Add to that the knock-on effect of increasing VAT from 5 per cent – 7.5% per cent, and you will begin to get an idea just how deep government will dig into your wallet.

On the global stage, those who are betting that the entry of Michael Bloomberg into the presidential race will be the saving grace for the Democratic Party, will lose their bet. Sure, the Democrats need Bloomberg to save the party from its self-sabotaging swing to the far left, but Bloomberg is coming too late in the day.

The US Senate will save Donald Trump from removal and he will go on to win re-election on November 3 by a bigger margin than he won in his first term. To borrow the Trumpian phrase, Trump will win bigly.

He will be judged not by the serial scandals and catastrophic flip-flops of his first four years in office because his critics have loud voices but weak numbers. Trump would win because on his watch the economy – which will decide the vote – has performed remarkably well, in spite of his spectacularly dysfunctional presidency.

The summer Olympic Games in Tokyo will be a truly amazing spectacle to usher in the new decade for sport lovers. I predict that the US would retain its position as all-time highest medal winner, but unlike in 2016, China will topple the UK to second place.

As for Nigeria which has won only three gold since 1952, the best performance will still be in its past – Atlanta 1996. Even bronze, the only medal at the last Olympics in Brazil, will be a distant dream in Tokyo.

Our medal-less outing in Doha, presaged by a pregnancy of multiple catastrophic births including our failure to go beyond the round of 16 in the U-17 FIFA World Cup in Brazil; failure of the Super Eagles to qualify for the African Nations Championship in Cameroun; and the failure of the Falcons and the U-20 to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, only mean that this is the year of the spectator.

Millions watching on TV and tourists lucky to make the trip to Japan, will have a reward more valuable than medals: a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the world’s most coveted sporting shrine.

Edo Crisis: Poor performance is bane of Obaseki, not Oshiomhole – Hon Iriase

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress APC, Hon Pally Iriase on Monday said that lacklustre performance is the bane of Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki and not former Governor, Adams Oshiomhole.

The former House of Representatives, Deputy Majority Whip made this disclosure to journalists at the Abuja Airport.

Iriase said the superlative performance of Oshiomhole which Obaseki would have levered on has been eroded due to an unnecessary face off created by him.

” His performance in Edo State in the last three and half years has been lacklustre and I say this with the deepest responsibility because before we voted for him he had everything laid out for him to excel because of Oshiomhole’s superlative performance.

“We voted for him because he was the chairman of the economic team while I was the pioneer SSG of that government.

“Everything was laid out for him to perform but he has missed this opportunity to excel as Oshiomhole laid a solid foundation for him,”Iriase stressed.

“These projects he is bandying around the place under SEEFOR projects are World Bank funded with which he is working on narrow roads and other projects by NDDC in the state.

“The first four years of Oshiomhole was superlative throughout his first tenure and the then Oba of Bini of blessed memory virtually adopted Oshiomhole as his son though he is not from Benin.

“He had no problem winning after his first term because of his performance which endeared him to all Edo citizens despite the paucity of funds.

“All you hear is Obaseki vs Oshiomhole and the narrative is wrongly skewed as if Oshiomhole is running for governorship.

“Let Obaseki name the major projects in each of the 18 local governments that he has executed.

“Certainly we need to have the fear of God because giving awards for landmarks in education is something else because teachers are not paid.

Right now I pay my Alma mata ,Edeki Grammar school eleven teachers monthly salaries in Otuo.

“On Health, Oshiomhole performed and he started a hospital and I used my zonal Constituency funds to complete the hospital from cradle to grave, the labour room, maternity and motuary. X-ray and scanning machines have been installed but he refused to take ownership.

“All was required of Obaseki was to take over the hospital to stop people from dying endlessly.

“All these rabble-rousing by Obaseki is to cover up his lacklustre performance in the state, me I cannot be fooled.

  • 2023: APC governors’ ‘plot’ to oust Oshiomhole, By Ehichioya Ezomon

2023: APC governors’ ‘plot’ to oust Oshiomhole, By Ehichioya Ezomon

    By Ehichioya Ezomon
With the next elections still over three years, presidential aspirants, especially governors, have literally abandoned their duties, and started jockeying and junketing for space and relevance.
Accordingly, three issues, concerning the 2023 polls, have emerged lately, with two pertaining to the All Progressives Congress (APC). First, is the report that four governors spearheaded attempts to oust the party Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
The second is President Muhammadu Buhari’s avowal to prevent those vying for the presidency and National Assembly seats, the use of his name (as in previous elections), as a campaign tool, “to force themselves on Nigerians.”
And third is his pledge to ensure that the next elections are free and fair, and that nobody will use their offices or resources to force themselves on their constituencies.
These related matters are coming amid the upswing in scheming for 2023, barely six months after the inauguration of the current administration, based on the 2019 general election.
Let’s begin with the alleged “plot” to unseat Oshiomhole, which has raged on prior to the February/March 2019 polls. Critics’ initial anger was against his “mishandling” of the APC primaries.
But the crux was his stand against attempts by some governors and powerful individuals to hijack the primaries to favour themselves and their cronies, and sideline opponents.
So, the struggle between Oshiomhole and disgruntled party bigwigs led to acrimony, defections and internal sabotage, resulting in the APC losing several states at the polls.
And those elections over, attention has shifted to 2023, with some of the governors re-litigating the fights with Oshiomhole, demanding he should resign or be sacked.
As reported by The Nation, four presidential aspiring governors are leading the “Oshiomhole-must-go” campaign, which they took to President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, and also exacerbated at three prior party meetings.
The parley with Buhari seemed an “arrangee” by the quartet, who told other governors the president wanted to “compare notes with them,” whereas they informed Buhari that the governors desired an audience with him, “on an issue of national importance.”
Hence, the president was “all ears” when the Villa meeting began, only for Governor Nasir el-Rufai to tell him that the governors had decided on Oshiomhole’s ouster “for not running the party well.”
However, Buhari didn’t give the agitating governors the all-clear, even as Oshiomhole’s neck was chiefly saved by some sympathetic governors, led by Babagana Zulum of Borno State.
Professor Zulum, reported to challenge el-Rufai’s claim of the governors’ “agreement” for Oshiomhole to go, said: “Who are the APC governors with you? Where and when did we meet to agree that the national chairman should resign?”
He told Buhari the governors’ ploy was “all about 2023,” which he should be wary of, adding: “They want a pliant person as Chairman, someone they can manipulate. That is why they want Oshiomhole out. They want to hijack the APC for selfish reason.”
Oddly, two of the alleged governors, el-Rufai (Kaduna State) and Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti State), are Oshiomhole’s publicised friends. The others, Messrs Abubakar Bagudu (Kebbi State) and Abubakar Badaru (Jigawa State), aren’t so identified.
Their said plot against Oshiomhole, on the premise he’s likely to frustrate their aspiration, confirms the notion that in politics, “there are no permanent friends or enemies, but permanent interests.”
It also aligns with the hit track, “Who The Cap Fit,” by the legendary reggae maestro, Bob Marley, whose soulful, moanful lyrics speak about betrayal by friends, thus:
“Man to man is so unjust, children: Ya don’t know who to trust. Your worst enemy could be your best friend, And your best friend your worse enemy. Some will eat and drink with you, Then behind them su-su ‘pon you. Only your friend know your secrets, So only he could reveal it…
“Some will hate you, pretend they love you now, Then behind they try to eliminate you. But who Jah bless, no one curse; Thank God, we’re past the worse. Hypocrites and parasites, Will come up and take a bite. And if your night should turn to day, A lot of people would run away…”
Perhaps, Oshiomhole’s governor-friends knew about his plans (“secrets”) to stop them in their presidential bid. And though “they eat and drink with him,” and “pretend they love him,” but behind him, “they try to eliminate” (oust) him from power.
To attain their goals in 2023, the governors are ready to forego their friendship with Oshiomhole. And they could as well drop the name of President Buhari, as doing so would create the impression that he favours particular aspirants.
But Mr. Yinka Oyebode, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Fayemi, has dismissed The Nation report as “a cock and bull story” that lacks credibility, asking: “Do you believe that story?”
While he poured cold water on the “plot” to sack Oshiomhole, who, he said could be removed by the party members that elected him; he argued that no politician could stand before President Buhari and talk about 2023 polls in 2019.
But Yinka fiercely dissociated his boss from the alleged scheming when reminded that Buhari, abreast with the undercurrents, had addressed the issue during his 77th birthday ceremonies.
He said Dr. Fayemi is striving to fulfil the mandate Ekiti people gave him, to deliver the dividend of democracy, as a reward for their trust in him. “And he’s focused, every day, on achieving that goal,” Yinka said in a phone interview on Friday.
That said, President Buhari has charged anyone craving to occupy a political office in 2023 to work hard to achieve their goal “by convincing the electorate,” instead of dropping his name.
He promised credible polls, warning: “I will make sure, using the law enforcement agencies, that elections are free and fair. Nobody will use his office or resources to force himself on his constituency.”
Yet, this timely advice by Buhari has riled critics, who accuse him of speaking and behaving like a non-democrat. Sounds familiar?
Lately, Buhari has come under censure, after the arrest, detention, arraignment, “freedom,” re-arrest and re-book of activist-publisher-politician, Omoyele Sowore, by the Department of State Services (DSS) that’s viewed as doing Buhari’s bidding.
He thus earned the epithet, “Military Dictator” in a civilian garb. And to boot, a national newspaper, the PUNCH, decided that going forward, it would address the president as “Major General Buhari,” which, of course, is the rank he exited the Military.
Critics chorus that Buhari has no power (he hasn’t said he has) to determine who succeeds him, as only the people can decide who gets the presidential ticket to vie to rule Nigeria.
Agreed! But politicians, notably in Nigeria, have the propensity, and capacity to upend such a “universal truth” to leverage their ambitions. So, Buhari’s caution is spot-on!
