‘Third parties’ hands in Obaseki-Oshiomhole feud?, By Ehichioya Ezomon

    By Ehichioya Ezomon
The ways of the politician are comparable to those of a magician, whose antics are coined in the axiom, “The more you look, the less you see.” By the way, magic is an advanced trick, which only the adept can discern or decipher.
Lately, prominent Edo sons – Governor Godwin Obaseki and his predecessor in office, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole – have put a seal of approval to this aphorism, to be true of the politician.
Both the “godson” and “godfather,” known to be at daggers-drawn, capable of inducing a bloody confrontation between their loyalists and followers, have spinned the reality: “It’s a hoax!”
They ascribed the “lie” to the handiwork of some meddlesome interlopers, such as “Abuja politicians,” journalists, and unnamed “third parties.”
According to them, the matter that attracted media and national frenzy, was purveyed by “mischief-makers” out to plunge the ‘Heartbeat of The Nation’ into anarchy.
The other day, at momentous events in the state, Obaseki and Oshiomhole proclaimed their “chumminess” as it was when they worked together in Oshiomhole’s eight-year administration.
Actually, polity watchers attribute this “closeness” to the former governor’s choice of Obaseki as his successor, and thus, his labeling of as Governor Obaseki’s political “godfather.”
The duo had lived a life of “you rub my back, I scratch your back” until early 2019 when series of events exposed their “underbelly,” to the surprise, and anger of many within and outside the state.
Governor Obaseki was the first to speak on the issue, in response to the homily delivered by the Archbishop of Benin City, Augustine Akubueze, during a mass in Benin City, to mark the 80th birthday of the first governor of Edo State, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.
He said: “I thank you, very much, for the remarkable homily… and I have taken every word in your remark to heart and very seriously. I want to assure you that we are in pursuit of peace and we will have peace in Edo State.
“We have met – me and my predecessor in office – and fortunately, we do not have any fundamental issues. And… I believe that whatever third parties are trying to propagate, I am sure we can talk over it… Very soon, things will return to normalcy in Edo State.”
On the same day at the Iyamoh country home of Mr. Oshiomhole, the governor said his visit to his former boss wasn’t out of place, but as part of the celebration of Edo leaders.
“Today is Sallah, and we have just finished celebrating with the former APC national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, in Benin City, and we decided to come here to celebrate Sallah with my predecessor,” he said.
And Governor Obaseki had a word for people, who thought a rift existed between him and Oshiomhole: “Stop thinking.”
Oshiomhole was to reinforce the governor’s stand, crediting the “alleged rift” to “the creation of people with personal interest,” and the media, which “like creating factions for their own gain.”
He said the visit wasn’t unusual, as “from time to time, we have always been meeting,” and this visit “afforded me the opportunity to meet with my brother, and with people I have worked with.”
Simply put, Obaseki and Oshiomhole’s denial of a gulf between them didn’t reflect the facts on ground, which crescendoed that it was impossible to cover up, as these tell-tale signs indicate:
One: Two groups suddenly emerged in the Edo chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC). One camp vowed to stop Obaseki from his second term aspiration in 2020, while the other warned if that happened, there would be no more APC in the state.
The bandied story was Obaseki’s refusal to open the state treasury to political jobbers; and the governor affirmed this arm-twisting, and blackmail, which his traducers couldn’t sufficiently debunk.
Two: The inauguration of the Edo State House of Assembly was effected by nine of 24 Members-elect at 10.30 p.m. on June 17 – clear 10 days from the June 7 session, as early earmarked.
The “unique” inauguration erupted in series of protests, and intervention by the APC and National Assembly, which “ordered” a fresh proclamation by Governor Obaseki; and the courts that stayed further actions until the disposal of all judicial processes.
Three: A concerned Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba Ukoakpolokpolo, Ewuare II, had to report Obaseki and Oshiomhole to President Muhammadu Buhari, to prevail on them to settle their differences.
On Wednesday, July 3, the Omo N’Oba, at the head of a delegation of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs, met President Buhari, and suitably laid out the “concerns” of the established rulers.
His words: “If this crisis is not resolved now, with immediate effect, it may jeopardize the progress of the state. On behalf of the good people of Edo State, we kindly appeal to Mr. President to use your good offices to intervene and stop this crisis.”
Four: President Buhari subsequently invited, and got Obaseki and Oshiomhole talking, not only for the interest of Edo State, but that of the APC, which faces a crucial re-election for Obaseki in 2020.
This is a background sketch to the stage in which Governor Obaseki and Comrade Oshiomhole surprised the watching public that the “mutual enmity” between them was “imaginary.”
Oh, a figment of the imagination, indeed! Yet, it prompted His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, to leave the court of the Benin Kingdom on a “Save-Our-Souls” journey to Aso Rock in Abuja, to present the matter before President Buhari.
If there wasn’t a dispute, why didn’t they stop their acolytes from heating up the Edo polity with a media war, protests and solidarity rallies, even as Governor Obaseki vowed not to succumb to the dictates of a “godfather,” as Oshiomhole had “taught us”?
If “nothing burger,” why the intervention of the APC, and both chambers of the National Assembly, which arrived at the same conclusion of an “improper inauguration” of the Edo Assembly, and called for a fresh proclamation by Governor Obaseki?
And if all was well, Chief Odigie-Oyegun shouldn’t describe the scenario as, “Quite frankly, what is going on is ridiculous. We are beyond this kind. I am ashamed… It is unfortunate that Edo State has been in the news for the very wrong reasons…”
Anyway, the “combatants” have denied ever unsheathing their swords. But as we await their demonstration of amity, they should do the needful. First, appease the piece-loving people of Edo State, for instigating a “quarrel” to “knock their heads together.”
Second, led by Governor Obaseki, and Oshiomhole in tow, pay a homage to Oba Ewuare II, for defying his royal and fatherly entreaties to settle their bickering behind the scenes.
Third, a visit by Governor Obaseki to the national headquarters of the APC, to pledge his continued loyalty and commitment to the party and its ideals, and to its leadership.
And four, a visit, chaperoned by Oshiomhole, and accompanied by Obaseki, to President Buhari, in appreciation for getting them back to renewing their bonds of friendship and association.
With such a holistic reconciliation, Governor Obaseki and Comrade Oshiomhole could rally the troops ahead of the task of retaining Edo State in the APC column in the 2020 governorship poll.

  • APC under me uprooted Saraki, Nigeria's smartest political player – Oshiomhole

APC under me uprooted Saraki, Nigeria's smartest political player – Oshiomhole

*Buhari magnanimous to pick ministerial nominees from states that gave less than five per cent votes*

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has described former President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki as a “smartest political player, seasoned smart guy.”

He explained how it took his party patience and perseverance to shut out Saraki from politics at both national and local levels.

He said: “Remember, I was saying that Saraki must be removed, people would say how would I do it? I said okay if he resists removal then we would uproot. We went to Kwara, we did Otoge, we uprooted Saraki and you cannot commend me for this? You know who Saraki is?

“If you are talking of the smartest political player, seasoned smart guy, he is. But for every smartness he has, I have a superior smartness. At the end of the day, who won? As a Senate President, we uprooted him as senator, we uprooted his nominee for governor, and senators, we put our own.”

The APC national Chairman explained that the former President of the Senate as of today has failed to produce any politician in the Senate and at the state level.

According to him, “Today, he doesn’t have one senator in Kwara, he doesn’t have one House of Representatives member in Kwara. Everything in Kwara is APC and you can’t commend me for that? If you don’t, then I will be like the lizard – I will praise myself if newsmen don’t praise me.”

Meanwhile, Oshiomhole has urged Nigerians to mount pressure on President Muhammadu Buhari and his government to deliver in the second term.

The APC chairman, who stated this yesterday while briefing State House Correspondents after his meeting with President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja said all parts of the country have been patronized, so far, in the selection of ministers for the next Federal Executive Council (FEC).

According to the APC chairman, the team of ministers would definitely perform to support President Buhari in delivering the good to Nigerians.

He said: “I am very optimistic that these ministers coming with all of us working together, the party, the executive which the ministers belong and the National Assembly where we have overwhelming majority, we have what it takes to take Nigeria to the next level and the next level we are going there.

“So, what you and I should insist on is that in the president’s second term, in this next level, our party, our government at the centre, state and local government level must deliver.”

The APC chairman stated that President Buhari has succeeded in patronizing all sections of the country through the list of ministerial nominees sent to the National Assembly for confirmation.

Oshiomhole noted that in selecting the nominees for the second term cabinet, Buhari picked two candidates from even a state that gave him less than five per cent votes in the 2019 presidential election.

The APC boss’ comment is coming on the heels of criticisms that have trailed the list regarding the personality of those nominated by President Buhari for membership of the next FEC. Some Nigerians have faulted the President for failing to include technocrats in the next cabinet.

Responding to those who described the list as an exercise of political patronage, Oshiomhole said: “Patronage can be positive or negative. But if there is one man who has shown the capacity to patronize all, including where he did not win election, it is President Buhari.

“Otherwise, where we got less than five per cent, I saw two ministers coming from that state. That speaks volumes about a large heart, to accommodate, appreciate and to have an all-inclusive government.”

  • APC faring better under my chairmanship – Oshiomhole

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, on Monday, claimed that he has provided good leadership for the party.
According to him, Nigerians are appreciating APC better under his leadership.
Oshiomhole had taken over APC chairmanship from Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who hails from the same state, Edo.
Speaking with State House correspondents after meeting President Muhammadu Buhari in the State House, Oshiomhole said that APC now has more members in the National Assembly and also controlling the leadership of the two chambers.
He also maintained that APC, under him, was able to uproot the former Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his cronies, politically.
Stressing that APC is waxing stronger, he said that the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party is in turmoil.
He said that President Buhari was magnanimous to have nominated up to two ministers each from states that contributed less than 5% of the President’s votes in the 2019 Presidential election

Oba of Benin raises alarm over 'escalating' feud between Obaseki, Oshiomhole

Oba of Benin Ewuare II says the disagreement between Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, has escalated.
Oba Ewuare II who spoke when he received members of the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee set up to look into the Edo Assembly crisis, said he intervened in the feud between both men but the crisis escalated.
The Benin monarch said he was about to meet both men again when he heard about the committee.
“Like I told President Buhari that I have been talking to the two parties involved, Oshiomhole and the incumbent governor on different occasions. I have invited both of them to discuss with them but things are escalating too fast.
“I was still planning to meet both of them when I heard the House of Representatives has set up an adhoc committee to look into the issue and I pray that you are successful in this task ahead,” Oba Ewuare stated.
Chairman of the committee, Abdulrazak Namdas (APC ADAMAWA) said the committee was set up to investigate the crisis in the Edo state House of Assembly and to bring lasting solution to the problem.
Speaking to newsmen at the Benin Airport, he said, “I am the chairman of the committee and we are here to do the factfinding, to meet with the honourable members, stakeholders, clerk of the house and all the people that are expected to be seen; we are ready to see them today. And then get back to Abuja.
“We have started the process already; this committee has been given just a week, we have met the governor of the state, we have met with other members of the house of assembly, Edo state that are in Abuja. And we are going to meet with the other ones that are here in Edo and the clerk.
“We are men of integrity, we are able politicians in our own right, we have track records to prove and men you can never question their character.”

  • Oba of Benin and Obaseki-Oshiomhole 'MAD' project, By Ehichioya Ezomon

Oba of Benin and Obaseki-Oshiomhole 'MAD' project, By Ehichioya Ezomon

    By Ehichioya Ezomon
For the second time in a fortnight, I’m treating this issue not for its festering, but because Governor Godwin Obaseki and former Governor Adams Oshiomhole have spurned the pleas of the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, to bury their political differences.
Rather, they’ve chosen the path of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) that doesn’t bode well for their platform – the All Progressives Congress (APC), and least of all the interest and wellbeing of the people and development of Edo State.
So, on Wednesday, July 3, 2019, the Omo N’Oba Nedo, at the head of a delegation of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs, reported his “frustration” to President Muhammadu Buhari, for his intervention in the impasse.
He told the president: “We, as traditional rulers in Edo State, are concerned about the crisis between Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman and his Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, and Edo State House of Assembly.
“If this crisis is not resolved now, with immediate effect, it may jeopardize the progress of the state. On behalf of the good people of Edo State, we kindly appeal to Mr. President to use your good offices to intervene and stop this crisis.”
Even as he intimated the president that he doesn’t like to interfere in inter-party or intra-party matters, as “the Benin Crown is non-partisan,” he said it’s difficult to turn a blind eye “because, if this crisis is not brought under control, it is likely to jeopardize the welfare of the masses.”
“This is why I, in my capacity as Chairman of Edo State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs, supported by members of the Council, will endeavour to broker peace between the warring parties,” he said.
The watching public isn’t in the know if the Obaseki-Oshiomhole spat was principally the reason Oba Ewuare led a delegation to the president, as he (Oba) raised additional issues concerning the state and the Buhari administration.
However, that the Oba took the matter to President Buhari indicates his disappointment, and ostensibly annoyance at the refusal of two of the most prominent personalities in Edo State to heed his appeals and mend fences.
For the duo to ignore the revered Royal Majesty is a travesty of the age-long submission of Edo people to the traditional intercessory authority of the Oba (and the Enigies) of the kingdom.
If, Oshiomhole, now at the federal level, no longer has use for the “cover” given by the Oba to those that govern Edo State, Governor Obaseki, who’s barely two and half years in the saddle, and craves for a second term, needs the palace blessings and backing.
Recall Oba Ewuare’s prayer, three months to his crowning on October 20, 2016, when outgoing Governor Oshiomhole and members of the Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF), along with candidate Godwin Obaseki and his running mate, Phillip Shuaibu, visited his palace.
Oshiomhole’s strategy was to present Obaseki, as the “next governor,” to the then Crown Prince Eheneden Erediauwa (Oba Ewuare II), who eulogized his “miraculous” achievements, “almost along the same line as the Governor of Lagos State at the time, (Babatunde) Fashola,” and “his (Oshiomhole’s) respect for the traditional institution.”
A photograph of that parley shows that as Oshiomhole stood speaking, and former Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, as Chairman of the PGF, sat on the right, both Obaseki and Shuaibu stood in the foreground, facing the Oba.
Responding, Oba Ewuare wished “Mr. Godwin Obaseki well to be the next governor of Edo State,” adding: “So, we can only pray that may the Lord, God almighty, and our ancestors protect the gubernatorial candidates, and give them the wisdom to put food on the table of the masses. “Because for us, our first concern is the people, the masses.
“And, of course, he (Obaseki) will be a great respecter, like our Comrade Governor (Oshiomhole). I said he should do better than him, to be a great respecter of the traditional institution.”
It’s normal for Oba Ewuare to wish for another governor that would respect the traditional institution, as did Oshiomhole, whose veneration for the late Omo N’Oba Nedo, Uku Akpolokpolor, Oba Erediauwa, made him to be “adopted as a son,” and the palace became “his second home.”
Correspondingly, Oba Erediauwa endorsed the policies and programmes of Oshiomhole’s administration, including the infrastructural upgrade of Benin City, and particularly the expansion of the Airport Road that affected the palace wall.
It’s a taboo to touch such a monument, but Oba Erediauwa reportedly said that, “If the wall is going to prevent the expansion of the road, you (Oshiomhole) should remove it.”
That unprecedented gesture silenced the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which had used, as a campaign tool, the alleged “provocative” plan by Oshiomhole’s government to pull down the fence, for the road expansion.
Certainly, Omo N’Oba Erediauwa would have “handed over” Oshiomhole to his successor, Oba Ewuare II, to “take care of him.” Perhaps, to enjoy a similar protective shield, Oshiomhole went to the palace, to introduce candidate Obaseki to the Oba.
Against this background, why would both men, but particularly Governor Obaseki, defy the Oba’s advice and pleas to settle the political rift between them, to the extent that he had to externalize his frustration to President Buhari?
Where’s the “respect for the traditional institution” that the Oba desired from candidate Obaseki, if the governor couldn’t defer to the Royal Majesty as an arbiter in his quarrel with Oshiomhole? And did Oshiomhole’s respect for the Benin Throne end with the demise of Omo N’Oba Erediauwa?
The Obaseki camp may have won rounds one and two: Installation of (minority) presiding officers of the Edo House of Assembly, and the reported purging of Oshiomhole’s surrogates in the State Executive Council.
But how long can they sustain this “clapping with one hand” in the face of a very potent and formidable opposition PDP that stung like the bee the last time on February 23, 2019?
It’s time to reconcile, especially as Oba Ewuare II, who Obaseki and Oshiomhole couldn’t respect his mediatory role, has placed the case before the APC leader, President Buhari, to settle.

Obaseki inaugurates commission of enquiry to probe hospital contracts under Oshiomhole

The Edo Government says it will probe contracts for construction of structures and supply of equipment to Benin Central Hospital, awarded by the administration of Adams Oshiomhole.
Mr Cruise Osage, Special Adviser to Edo Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Benin, saying a Commission of enquiry would soon be constituted to probe the contracts.
According to the Governor’s Aide, the action for probe was necessitated by numerous calls on the government to look into the contracts in which billions of taxpayers’ money were expended on poorly executed projects under the regime of Adams Oshiomhole, past Governor and incumbent APC National Chairman
He said the Commission of Enquiry would have a mandate to ascertain if details of contract terms were adhered to, especially the quality of materials used for the building.
Osagie said the Commission of Enquiry would also determine the extent of irregularities regarding the purchase of equipment among others.
“The state government will investigate allegations of fraud and irregularities with the contract for procurement of the hospital equipment,” he said.
The aide stated that the commission would unravel why the equipment contracted were yet to be supplied and other claims made by the contractors.
He said, “the contractors who handled the building had questions to answer including the shoddy jobs done among others.”
Osagie said works were ongoing at the hospital to patch up parts of the Hospital, as parts of the poorly constructed facilities leading to collapse of the roof in some sections.

Obaseki opens up on 'rifts' with Oshiomhole, sack of commissioners

The governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has said there is no rift between himself and the national Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as is being projected by people.
Recall that there has been frantic efforts at both the national and state levels to reconcile the two. However, the governor who had hitherto avoided the question on his relationship with his predecessor insisted that all was fine with them.
The governor made the statement in a chat with reporters on Saturday in Abuja at the annual convention of the Usagbe Club of Nigeria.
He said: “I don’t have any feud with the national Chairman. There are political issues in Edo which are being resolved. As far as we are concerned, we have a House of Assembly which has not been inaugurated, the key members have not accepted to be inaugurated, so when they go get inaugurated, the issue there will be settled.”
On the leadership crisis rocking the assembly, the governor said: “These are all issues in court. Let the court adjudicate. I am not an expert in constitutional law.” The governor also explained why he changed members of his cabinet saying “we’re on the last lap as a government, we need to review how we operated in the last two or three years. We need to put our best foot forward and give the final push. So, it is not unusual in the life of governments after a few years.”
While clarifying his statement that he met thugs who masqueraded as role models and took over power in Edo State, Obaseki said: “If you understand what happened in Edo up to 2006, the lone state actors have become empowered by the political class. They were collecting revenues, determining things. They were like an alternative government. They constituted themselves into a vermin that were used for political activities. Part of the crisis we had to deal with was how to remove these thugs from the streets, from collecting revenue and intimidating private businesses.”

Edo 2020: Obaseki goes tough, sacks eight of Oshiomhole's men in Executive Council

The gulf between Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and Governor Godwin Obaseki appeared deepened following the sack of eight Commissioners in the state executive council.

“The state government offers its immense gratitude to the outgoing commissioners for their service and assures of continued cordial relations in the years ahead, while congratulating the newly appointed commissioners and special advisers, urging them to serve the people with integrity,” the statement said.
The statement advised the outgoing commissioners to handover all government property in their possession to the Permanent Secretaries in their ministries and wished them well in their future endeavours.
Others appointed Special Advisers are Magdalene Ohenhen; Osaigbovo Iyoha; Andrew Momodu and Ojo Asien.
