Edo State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs on Wednesday sought the intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari in the ongoing crisis between the state governor, Godwin Obaseki and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole.
The Chairman of the Council and Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’ Edo, Ewuare II, spoke during the closed doors meeting with the President.
He said: “Mr. President, we as traditional rulers in Edo State, are concerned about the crisis between Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the All Progressives Congress National Chairman and his Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, and Edo State House of Assembly.
“If this crisis is not resolved now with immediate effect it may jeopardize the progress of the state.
“On behalf of the good people of Edo State, we kindly appeal to Mr. President to use your good offices to intervene and stop this crisis,” he added

PDP to Oshiomhole: Leave us alone, face your corruption charges
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has told the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, to leave the party alone and face his pending corruption allegations.
The party accused the chair of seeking a face-saving measure by embarking on what it described as shadow-boxing against the PDP.
In a statement Tuesday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party mocked Oshiomhole, saying the party chair is battling to save his political career over allegations of corruption and malfeasance in the handling of party affairs.
It added that the APC chair was in no position to cast aspersions or pontificate to the PDP on its internal activities and relationship with its elected public officials.
The statement said, “Instead of trying to launder his image by unnecessarily attacking the PDP, we advise Oshiomhole to redeem his name by submitting himself to the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to answer huge allegations of corruption as Edo state governor as well as alleged misconducts as APC Chairman”.
The PDP challenged Oshiomhole to speak out on the allegations that he fled the country at the wake of his reported interrogation by the DSS in 2018 over accusations of corruption.
“This is a leader who had accepted that his party and the government it formed are sanctuaries of corrupt persons, when he stated, at the APC campaign rally in Edo state last year, that once you join the APC, your sins are forgiven.
“Moreover, instead of this fixation on the PDP, Oshiomhole already has his plate full with the crisis in his home state, Edo, where he is generally believed to be responsible for political tension by trying to force himself on the state governor, Governor Godwin Obaseki, as godfather.
“Oshiomhole needs to concentrate on the crisis rocking his party as well as the Presidency where the members of the cabal are at daggers drawn over the sharing of positions as “booty” of a rigged election,” the PDP added. -
Bauchi Assembly Inauguration: Respect rule of law, Oshiomhole tells Gov Muhammed
The National Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, has urged Gov. Bala Muhammed of Bauchi State to submit to the rule of law by allowing APC lawmakers who are majority to lead and pilot the affairs of Bauchi State House of Assembly.
Oshiomhole gave the advice on Friday while meeting APC legislators from Bauchi State House of Assembly in Abuja.
The National chairman, who described democracy as a game of numbers, said that democracy must be governed by the rule of law.
“The laws are clear, democracy is a game of numbers. Minority can never preside over majority in a democracy because APC has 22 legislative members, PDP 8 and NNPC 1.
“There is no way PDP can produce the speaker, the deputy speaker and other principal officers,” Oshiomhole said.
According to him, I have briefed the President in full, having met with you earlier when you shared with me the details. I have had conversation with the Governor. So, I have all the facts.
He urged Gov. Muhammed to borrow a leaf from President Muhammadu Buhari to respect the rights and privileges of APC members-elect in the State House of Assembly.
“I recall that our President would always say that the right of our citizens must be respected even during election.
’’ It is because of that liberal disposition of the President that you can have a PDP person being proclaimed as the Governor of Bauchi State after the last election,” Oshiomhole said.

Thugs attack Oshiomhole in Benin
The crisis rocking the Edo State House of Assembly may have crept into the new legislative arm of government as thugs allegedly attacked Mr Seidu Oshiomhole, younger brother of the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Adams Oshiomhole, in Benin.
The thugs attacked Oshiomhole on Tuesday alongside 14 other lawmakers-elect in the state.
The lawmakers were reportedly holding a meeting at an undisclosed location when they were attacked by thugs.
According to reports, the meeting was necessitated by the Monday midnight inauguration of nine members of the new parliament and subsequent election of Frank Okiye as speaker.
It would be recalled that nine out of the 24-man Assembly met to elect a speaker in what could be described as a recipe for crisis in the state.
The ongoing crisis in the state assembly may not be unconnected to the rift between Governor Godwin Obaseki and his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole.

Ninth Assembly Elections: Oshiomhole threatens to sanction APC lawmakers who voted against party choices
The National chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Adams Oshiomhole as said the party will appropriately sanction lawmakers who went against the party’s position on the election of the National Assembly leadership held on Tuesday.
The party’s choice candidates for the four elective positions – Ahmed Lawan and Ovie Omo-Agege as Senate President and Deputy Senate President and Femi Gbajabiamila and Idris Wase as House of Representatives Speaker and Deputy Speaker – won convincingly.
Lawan was challenged by Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume and Ike Ekweremadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) contested against Omo-Agege. Umaru Bago squared up against Gbajabiamila and John Dyegh, who insisted on vying for the Deputy Speaker’s slot but surrendered at the eleventh hour.
Speaking yesterday after the leadership election had ended in the National Assembly, Oshiomhole said: “We have rules. We expect people to obey the rule and the rules of democracy are clear. When we have taken a position as a party, we expect party members to comply.
“We will look at the constitution and we will see what it says about people who resort to deviant behaviour.
“I am convinced that no system; particularly a voluntary system, can be held together if the rule of discipline is not enforced. A system must have the capacity to use the carrot and stick and balance the mix.
“If there is no stick, as they say ‘you spare the rod, you spoil the child.’ I am a believer in discipline. Even when I was in NLC, there was discipline. When we say we are going on strike, you don’t go and breach the picket line.
“The elite must understand that if we use the party platform to climb to a position, when there is a debate, not imposition; we have all discussed, the governors have agreed, leaders of the party have agreed across board; you can’t say you know more than everyone else. Unless you want to do independent candidate, then you go and amend the constitution.
“But don’t ask me if my child doesn’t behave well in school; just wait first whether there is any child who will not behave well.
“Today (yesterday) is a day to celebrate God’s blessings. If God has stood by us and gave us victory, what are my bitter about, but of course, bad behaviour will not be rewarded.”
He said he will not change overnight because of criticism.
The party chair said: “Particularly, when you go back to the recent sponsored attacks on my person. I am not going to borrow another person’s style. I am not a pretender.
“I don’t seat on the fence. I have strong conviction and I am driven by my conviction, not by the voices in the market; and what has happened today shows that those visions are well-pursued consciously with good heart, God bless the outcome.”

Governor Obaseki’s commitment to Edo people’s mandate is irrevocable – Ehi Braimah
By Ehi Braimah
Recently, media reports have indicated that the cordial relationship between Edo State governor, Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, and the All Progressive Congress (APC) National Chairman and immediate past governor of Edo State, Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, also popularly known as ‘Osho Baba’, is heading for the rocks. It is not difficult to understand why this scenario is playing out even though there have been several denials of the reports by both sides.
In our kind of politics, an estranged relationship is a normal and every day event; we enjoy celebrating mediocrity because that’s just the way we are. It partly explains why, as a nation, Nigeria has refused to move forward – we find it difficult to embrace the concept of ‘big ideas’. Every conversation is reduced to a commercial transaction; we seem to forget in a hurry that money is the root of all evils.
Speculations that Governor Obaseki will be denied a second term by an emerging force allegedly loyal to Comrade Oshiomhole are unhelpful because they are a source of distraction for hardworking Governor Obaseki who is focused and very keen to deliver on his mandate to Edo people. In typical Nigerian speak, what you hear is that His Excellency is not ‘playing ball’, the popular euphemism among politicians when public funds or contracts are not shared to party members. The story also making the rounds that Obaseki is not paying obeisance to Osho Baba – whatever that means — is not true; it is another allegation from the pit of hell scripted by those who do not mean well for Edo State, the ‘Heart Beat of the Nation’.
I watched closely three years ago how Osho Baba campaigned vigorously for Obaseki in the run up to the elections and he did a very good job marketing Obaseki’s credentials and the party’s manifesto at every campaign rally. My view is that Comrade Oshiomhole picked a worthy successor based on his own experience and deep insights and even if there are differences between them, I’m confident they will mend fences and make peace in the overall interest of Edo people. They have always related to each other as friends and brothers with shared values for the inclusive development of the state.
The truth of the matter is that we have some bad losers in Edo State who are using Osho Baba’s name in vain to gain recognition. Their primary objective is to cause bad blood between Governor Obaseki and the APC National Chairman. These greedy party men display an egregious sense of entitlement; they are heckling and blackmailing Obaseki because they lack the courage to confront him. The irony is that these same people have always been in government since the days of Chief Lucky Igbinedion, the erstwhile governor of Edo State, and they are hell bent on causing disaffection within the party but they will not succeed. Some of them were commissioners when Oshiomhole was governor, and their grudge is that Obaseki is ‘not carrying party members along’ – same old story.
By November, Obaseki would be marking his third anniversary in office – it will be headlined by his signature event, ‘Alaghodaro’, as he had done in the past. ‘Alaghodaro’ means His Excellency is committed to moving Edo State forward to achieve enduring wealth and prosperity for the people. His solid private sector background stands him in good stead all the time and it has helped to nurture his strategic management approach to governance. It is evident the bad losers who are no longer feeding fat on party patronage are worried and unhappy that Obaseki, popularly called the ‘Wake and See Governor’ because of his outstanding record of performance, could be given a second and well deserved mandate by the Edo people during the gubernatorial elections next year.
In a fitting response to the bad losers recently, the governor, while receiving Muslim faithful at the government house to mark the end of Ramadan, said the era of sharing public funds to “a few greedy politicians” was over. According to a story in The Cable newspaper, the governor said public funds at the disposal of the state will be used for the benefit of the people and development of the state. Obaseki also said the plot of detractors to frustrate his administration will never come to fruition. He called on his guests and people of the state to “continue to pray for the administration to succeed.”
“Only God gives power. What is going on in Edo State is the handiwork of detractors who want to frustrate the administration so we can fail in delivering the dividends of democracy to the people. But that will never happen,” he said. “As a governor, I will continue to do my best and spend the state’s resources to ensure the people get the best.
“The election is still a year ahead. What is playing out is a plan by very few greedy people who are concerned about themselves. We will continue to do our best in paying our workers and pensioners, and will continue to develop the state as the time for sharing money is over. The resources of the state are meant for the people.”
Since Obaseki assumed office in 2016, he has provided effective leadership by creating a culture of transparency and robust engagement; he’s also encouraging innovation, creative enterprise and accelerating development through the PPP model (public-private partnership) such as the Gelegele Seaport. His thematic pillars of development include healthcare, education, arts, culture and tourism; housing, technology, industrialisation and security.
The rich cultural heritage and the immense tourism potentials of the state are attracting significant interests from investors around the world. With the over 50 tourist sites already identified, tourism is being positioned strongly as a major revenue stream for the state in the years ahead. The hills in Ososo serve as a touristic backdrop for the annual Ososo Carnival in Akoko Edo local government area while Edofest is another annual showcase of the tradition, culture and lifestyle of the Edo people. In October, the state will be hosting the National Arts Festival (NAFEST) in Benin City, the state capital. The state will also be hosting the National Sports Festival next year – both events will not only attract a lot of visitors, they will enhance the value chain of the local economy.
Obaseki’s administration has transformed the education sector. For example, there has been significant improvement in the development of infrastructure in schools throughout the state. In addition, over 7,000 teachers upgraded their skills in digital applications. In the healthcare sector, the governor strengthened all aspects of primary healthcare — he remodeled over 50 primary healthcare centres (PHCs) across the state but his target is 200 units as part of his plan to achieve improved wellbeing of Edo people under the Edo Healthcare Improvement Programme (EDOHIP). The state and all the 18 local governments save one percent of their federal allocation for investment in the healthcare sector.
Over 100,000 jobs have been created by the governor in the private and public sectors in the state although he promised to create about 200,000 jobs. The government initiated job matching skills, acquisition and entrepreneurship development, Edo Innovate, Train-to-Hire, Edojobs Internship Scheme for graduates and artisans, Edo Food and Agriculture Clusters, Edo Film and TV Village and Edo Production Centre. “These initiatives are to develop the entrepreneurship skills of our people, as well as create massive employment and jobs in the state,” says Obaseki.
His other achievements include investment in the housing sector – the first phase of Emotan Garden Estate will be delivered before the end of this year. The cost of acquiring a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) has been reduced significantly to N50,000 and His Excellency also spearheaded the installation of night landing facilities at the Benin airport, a project funded by the state government.

Edo 2020: Buhari wades into Oshiomhole, Obaseki rift
Ahead of the 2020 governorship election in Edo State, President Muhammadu Buhari has called for truce between incumbent governor Godwin Obaseki and his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole.
Recall that the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has being embroiled in crisis for a while now over next year’s governorship election.
According to a report by The Nation, some members of the APC under the auspices of the Edo Peoples Movement (EPM) vowed to stop Governor Obaseki from securing the party’s ticket to run for the election.
The EPM members who claim to be loyalists of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole accused Governor Obaseki of alienating those that brought him to power and destruction of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s legacies.
But Governor Obaseki, in several fora, said those against his second term bid were few politicians he refused to give government money to.
However, presidential sources confirmed that Governor Obaseki was at the villa on Friday to brief the President about his 2020 ambition and those opposing him.
According to the source who asked not to be named, the President asked Obaseki to meet with his predecessor, Oshiomhole and he got them talking.
It was learnt that the intervention of Buhari made a meeting between Oshiomhole and Obaseki to be held in Abuja in the presence of some top personalities and party chieftains.
According to the source, “Last night, President Buhari got Oshiomhole and Obaseki talking. This is the same Obaseki that said he can never see Oshiomhole.
“He is now stretching the olive branch but his aides are not sincere with him. Oshiomhole remained a constant equation in the whole arrangement. He has never spoken about Edo 2020.”

APC sets up disciplinary committee for Oshiomhole, Shuaibu
The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee (NWC) has set up a five-man disciplinary committee to investigate allegations leveled by Sen. Lawal Shuaibu, its Deputy National Chairman North, against Mr Adams Oshiomhole, the party’s National Chairman.
Malam Lanre Isa-Onilu, APC National Publicity Secretary made this known in a statement issued on Thursday night in Abuja.
He added that the five-man committee would particularly investigate Shuaibu’s allegation against Oshiomhole on issues involving the collective decisions of the NWC.
Issa-Onilu added that the APC NWC which passed a vote of confidence on Oshiomhole, took the decision at the end of its 38th regular meeting.
He said the committee would also investigate alleged instigation of Senators and members of House of Representatives by Sen. Shuaibu against the decision of the party on the choice of presiding officers for the National Assembly.
This, he alleged, happened at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, even when the issues were discussed and agreed on by members of the NWC.
He said Shuaibu’s action was particularly embarrassing as he was seen moving around Senators and members of the House of Representatives allegedly instigating them to revolt.
Issa-Onilu said Shuaibu did this, while President Muhammadu Buhari was making his concluding remarks on the need for APC to present one candidate to avoid a divided house.
The APC spokesman said the committee which would be headed by Otunba Niyi Adebayo, is mandated to submit its report to the party’s NWC within seven days from today.
On May 28, Sen. Lawal Shuaibu called on Oshiomhole to resign for allegedly failing to add any value to the APC since his election.
Shuaibu, in a six-page letter dated May 27 and addressed to Oshiomhole, accused the chairman of incompetence, high handedness and immaturity in his handling of the affairs of the party.
He noted that the APC had lost control of seven states under Oshiomhole.
“I am a critical stakeholder in the APC project and therefore, have a stake for which I reserve the right to write this letter to you,” Shuaibu had said.

APC State chairmen pass vote of confidence on Oshiomhole
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum of State Chairmen on Thursday in Abuja passed a vote of confidence on Mr Adams Oshiomhole, the party’s National Chairman, saying he is the best man to lead the party.
Mr Ben Nwonye, the Secretary of the forum and Chairman, APC Enugu State Chapter, who spoke on behalf of the forum made this known while speaking with newsmen at the party’s national secretariat.
He fielded questions after the state chairmen had a closed door meeting with Oshiomole and members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
He added that inspite of recent negative reports on Oshiomhole, he remains the man with a strong will to lead the party at the moment.
“We met with the national chairman of our great party and members of the NWC and we touched on relevant issues on the party.
“We discussed in details on the party’s unity and at the end of the meeting, we were fully informed on the party’s issues and unity.
“Based on the information we have and the readiness of the party and the national chairman to lead the country and the party to the next level, we have unanimously passed a vote of confidence on Oshiomhole and the NWC,” he said.
Nwonye described recent negative reports making the rounds on Oshiomhole as spurious allegations meant to malign not just his person, but President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC as a party.
He added that Oshiomhole remain a strong man and the party’s national chairman, saying that he has all it takes to lead the APC to the next level.
Nwonye said it was regrettable that those that were against Oshiomhole started their campaign against him just as President Buhari was to be inaugurated for a second term in office.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that on May 28, Sen. Lawal Shuaibu, APC Deputy National Chairman, North, called on Oshiomhole to resign for allegedly failing to add any value to the APC since his election.
Following the party’s challenges in Zamfara and some other states of the federation, resulting from its mode of primaries ahead of the 2019 general elections, Oshiomhole and Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, the APC immediate past national chairman had been engaged in blame trade.
This particularly followed the upturning of the party’s electoral victory in Zamfara by the Supreme Court, and the losses it suffered in some states it previously controlled.

‘Come for tutorial on how to lead a party…’ Oyegun attacks Oshiomhole again
Immediate past National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief John Odigie-Oyegun yesterday insisted that he left behind a ruling party without blemish.
Responding through his Public Affairs Adviser, Ray Morphy, the former party leader dismissed the claim that he condoned indiscipline while in the saddle, saying he bequeathed a party without blemish to Oshiomhole.
According to him, the former Edo State governor came on board to destroy everything, accusing him of running the most fraudulent primaries in the history of politics in Nigeria.
Morphy said: “The Oshiomhole-led executive is about a year in office, why does he find it hard to function without looking for excuses and scape goats?
“It is common knowledge that Oshiomhole ran the most fraudulent primaries in the history of politics in Nigeria. Recall that INEC said so when it adjudged Oshiomhole primaries as the worst so far. The courts are saying the same thing today by upturning many APC primaries for being undemocratic and less than fair. Was it Oyegun who ran the primaries?
“Oyegun, an accomplished technocrat, a super permanent secretary, a former governor, a man without blemish, working with others cobbled together creditably the legacy parties, and held them together with tact, diplomacy and finesse until Oshiomhole came along. To his credit, Oyegun did not lose one member of the party.
“As an elder, as a leader, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun will not join issues with those who apparently are casting about looking for excuses for their inability to manage a ruling party successfully. Indeed, it is absurd to lose states with all the capacity at the disposal of the current chair. Party members know that APC witnessed its golden years under the chairmanship of Oyegun and no one can change that bit of political history.
“By the way, the vote increase to Mr President is a reflection of the confidence the people repose in the President despite the fumbles of the Oshiomole sole administratorship of the party.
“It will be recalled that Chief John Odigie-Oyegun just received The Zik award for Political Leadership alongside John Mahama, the former President of Ghana. In the award citation, he was extolled for exemplary political leadership of APC. Posterity has already given its verdict, Oyegun led the party to resounding victory.
“Oshiomhole should not destroy what others had laboured to build. If he needs tutorial on how to run a party, he should ask for it civilly. John Oyegun will be more than happy to help; after all, no man would like to see his son scatter what he had laboured to build.”
