  • You are a ‘monumental disgrace’ to Nigeria’s democracy – Oshiomhole tells Saraki

…threatens legal action against Senate President

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on Thursday described Senate President Bukola Saraki as a ‘monumental disgrace to the nation’s democracy.’

The embattled former Edo governor also threatened legal action against the Senate President.

Oshiomhole who was reacting to statement issued by Senate President asked him to name any member of the APC who offered him bribe either in foreign or local currency to influence him and members of the National Working Committee to take decision in their favour before, during and after the party primaries or face legal action.

Oshiomhole also said that it is pathetic and irresponsible for the resort to what he described as petty politics by the Senate Preaident whom he described as a usurper of and pretender to the position of senate president.

In a statement signed by this Chief Press Secretary, Simon Egbebulem, the APC Chairman said Saraki who has been in the eyes of investigation by the EFCC AND ICPC has no moral ground to call for the resignation of the national chairman.

The statement said further: “it is sad that Saraki, who just woke up from slumber occasioned by his crushing defeat at the Port Harcourt presidential primary election of his party, could degenerate to such a low level.

It is equally sad, but not unexpected, that Saraki, who is politically drowning, would make such libelous comments against the national chairman of the APC. And I challenge Saraki to mention one name of an aspirant that gave money to the National Chairman or we file a legal action against him.

Whereas, the basis on which he made those comments was tenuous and unjustifiable, it is on record that Saraki has been in the eye of investigations by the EFCC and the ICPC for sundry cases of corruption. That is the same man that has taken it upon himself to question Comrade Oshiomhole’s credibility.

We challenge him to mention one person who has claimed that he gave money to Oshiomhole to influence him and the decision of the party’s national working committee (NWC) in the just-concluded primary elections.

We insist that Saraki with his kind of prebendal politics is nothing but a monumental disgrace to the nation’s democracy.”

  • Alleged fraud: ICPC wades in, vows to probe Oshiomhole

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other-Related Offences Commission on Wednesday said it would probe the allegation of corruption leveled against the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, during the recently concluded party primaries.

The ICPC’s decision to investigate Oshiomhole came barely one week after he was quizzed by the Department of State Services over alleged anomalies in the APC primaries.

The spokesperson of the ICPC, Rasheedat Okoduwa, said this during a protest by some members of the APC under the aegis of Coalition 4 New Nigeria.

The anti-Oshiomhole protesters, led by a legal practitioner and civil rights activist, Stanley Onukwufor, carried placards with various inscriptions such as ‘With Oshiomhole APC is nowhere;’ ‘ICPC, probe Oshiomhole now;’ ‘Buhari, remove Oshiomhole;’ ‘Oshiomhole is corrupt;’ and ‘Oshiomhole must go.”

Okoduwa said, “First of all, we will verify whether, indeed, he has a petition against him, and from there, we will look at what they are complaining about.

“Then, the next step is to investigate the petition and see whether there is anything worthy of investigating in the matter.

“It goes through our normal processes. But let me just sound a note of caution. We receive petitions virtually every hour. So, the petitions is like queuing up and had to be addressed in the sequences they come.

“So, if a petition comes right now, you don’t expect it to be investigated before all others before it.

“We thank you for bringing us the petition and you have done the right thing by going through the process of submitting your petition. I think you have already done what you needed to do.”

Onukwufor alleged that the APC has failed with Oshiomhole as chairman, adding, “We don’t want him there again.”

  • APC primary crises: Oshiomhole has no moral ground to remain in politics – Saraki

Following allegations of collecting kickbacks in dollars levelled against the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress(APC) by his party’s aspirants and state governors, the Senate President Dr Bukola Saraki, has declared that the embattled chairman has no moral ground to continue to remain in politics.

This is even as the national leader of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) described a statement credited Oshiomhole, asking him to resign his position as the Senate President on moral ground as a joke.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin on yesterday on the sidelines of the sixth remembrance prayer for his late father, Dr Olusola Saraki, the Senate President said that Oshiomole has no locus standi to talk about morality in today’s Nigeria’s politics.

“That must be a joke coming from Oshiomole talking about moral ground. I think Oshiomole has no locus standi to talk about morality today. Oshiomole is somebody, who has been told to have been collecting not even naira but dollars from candidates and he is being accused by his party’s aspirants and Governors. I don’t think he has any moral ground, even to continue to be in politics not to talk about being a Chairman of a party.

“I remember in those days even Oyegun, they never accused him of something like this. I have left that party. I’m sure the President, based on integrity, knows the right thing to do. So, on moral ground, he cannot speak on moral ground.

Also speaking on Saturday by-election in Irepodun /Ekiti /Oke Ero /Isin federal constituency, Saraki decried huge deployment of policemen and sudden change of divisional heads of police in four local government areas for the by-election.

“You see, the mistake we sometimes make, we forget that Nigeria is a big nation in this global world, not only in the context of Africa. We provide leadership. An action that we take that tries to suggest that we are not civilised with rule of law and processes, doesn’t augur well with the image. Today, the President is the President of ECOWAS likewise the Chairman of INEC as chairman of electoral bodies in Ecowas, even show that we are a responsible country.

“So, when the Inspector General if Police(IG) begins to do things like this without following due process, it is not good for our country. And that is what we always stand for. And all those who supposed to caution him should ensure that due process is followed in thing like this.

“We have been doing bye- election here, I have never seen where the Divisional Police Officers( DPOs), are being transferred. We have been doing bye-elections here, I have never seen where 200 or 300 security personnel are being deployed. It is not about Kwara, it is about the country. It is about how the world sees us. It is about how we provide leadership in the continent. And we keep on saying that people like these are not doing the President any good. The people at the end of the day will speak, and they should allow people to exercise their rights, vote in peace and vote their wishes and should not do anything that create fear or break law and order.

“In spite of all these, I see PDP winning the election because we are on ground. There is no doubt about it. If you go round, you will know who is on ground. And you will see that in the results. They should allow people to exercise their rights”, he said.

  • Saraki must go says Oshiomhole

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Adams Oshiomhole has said Senate President Bukola’s Saraki’s continued stay in office is unacceptable to the party.

The APC national chairman also said it would be strange if the ruling party is experiencing “graveyard peace,” against the backdrop of recent events in APC.

Oshiomhole said these when he appeared on Arise Television, yesterday and added that the APC is prone to controversies because it is a large party.

Last week, the party chairman was detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) and grilled for nine hours after some governors alleged that he received bribes during the party’s primary elections across the country.

In his reaction, Oshiomhole said although the aggrieved members were allowed to grumble but the party has moved on and has put in place internal procedures for reconciliation.

“We have finished our primaries and we have submitted names to INEC and there are internal procedures for reconciliation and we are working on them.

“We are a large governing party and it will only be strange if we are having graveyard peace. People are allowed to grumble and grumbling is allowed. We should move on and find solutions.”

Asked whether the party still has plans to remove Saraki, he replied: “I think it’s about morality.

“We just had an election in the US. The democrats won more members in the congress. Without much ado, the leadership of the House changed. This question didn’t have to arise. Saraki belongs to a minority party; as it stands, today, in the senate.

“The truth about democracy is that it’s a game of numbers. It’s unacceptable that minority provides leadership over majority.”

  • APC crisis: Oshiomhole denies holding secret meetings with Buhari, Tinubu in London

APC crisis: Oshiomhole denies holding secret meetings with Buhari, Tinubu in London

Embattled National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole on Sunday denied meeting with a national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu last week in London.

Recall that there were reports at the weekend that the chairman met with Tinubu in Europe over his (Oshiomhole’s) interaction with the Department of State Services (DSS).

But speaking with reporters in Benin City after attending the interdenominational service to mark Governor Godwin Obaseki’s second year in office, Oshiomhole said there was no reason for him to go to London to see Tinubu when he could easily see him in Lagos.

He said he had unhindered access to Aso Villa to see President Muhammadu Buhari.

The chairman said: ”What am I doing in London? Why will I go to London to see Tinubu when I can see him in Bourdilon (Ikoyi, Lagos)?

What are the issues between him and me that we are to resolve in London? The leader of the party, President Buhari, I have access to at the Villa all the time. I don’t need to go to London to see my leader through the Queen.

The truth is that once a news reporter succeeds in preaching one lie, he is obliged to preach several lies to sustain the one lie. Some of the media, having allowed opposition to misuse them to fake news, they now feel obliged to faking more news but I am here and I am fine.”

Speaking about the grievances of some aspirants, Comrade Oshiomhole urged them to learn from President Buhari who contested for President three times without losing hope.

He said it was impossible for all contestants to win at the primaries.

  • Obaseki backs Oshiomhole against Amosun, Okorocha, says ‘Nobody is above the law’

Obaseki backs Oshiomhole against Amosun, Okorocha, says ‘Nobody is above the law’

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State on Sunday reacted to the feud between the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Adams Oshiomhole’s quarrel and some governors after the recently concluded controversial primaries held across the country.

He said some governors were opposed to Oshiomhole because of the change the chairman was introducing to the party.

What Oshiomhole is doing is to institute a regime of change where nobody is above the law,” he said.

Obaseki, who spoke in Benin City at the Church of God Mission during a thanksgiving service to mark his second year in office, did not name any governor, but Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun and Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha have been locked in a bitter row with Oshiomhole over the party’s primaries.

Many Nigerians under the Buhari-led administration are now afraid to commit crimes because of the repercussion, Obaseki said.

The governor said Nigerians would soon begin to feel the impact of “the fundamental changes” President Buhari was making.

Some of the fundamental changes started by Buhari/ Osinbajo will manifest shortly. For the first time people are now afraid to do wrong,” he said.

Speaking on his style, Obaseki said instead of dashing people money he would rather invest massively in infrastructure. The governor said he would also support people to grow their businesses.

He said his administration had commenced the training of 4,000 youths to boost security in the state, adding that a new security architecture would soon be unveiled.

He said: “One key element is that whatever we do must affect the people. We are stretching our limited resources to work for the people. We will spend money to work for the people.”

Recall that Oshiomhole has been at loggerheads with Okorocha, who is pushing for his son in-law to be the party’s governorship candidate.

Amosun is also not pleased that his candidate for the party’s ticket did not get the prize.

Oshiomhole said he would not help Okorocha to build a political dynasty. He pdescribed Amosun as an “emperor” for initially choosing candidates for various offices in disrespect to the primaries supervised by the National Working Committee (NWC).

  • APC crisis: Buhari, Osibanjo, Tinubu, others meet to determine Oshiomhole’s fate

APC crisis: Buhari, Osibanjo, Tinubu, others meet to determine Oshiomhole’s fate

Sequel to the recent crisis bedeveling the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as a fallout from the just concluded primaries across the country and the intensified calls by aggrieved members for the national chairman’s resignation, a meeting of the leadership of the party have been scheduled to hold next week.

The scheduled meeting, based on findings will permanent address and seal the fate of the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole.

A prominent member of the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, confided in one of our correspondents, in Abuja, on Friday that as a precursor to this meeting, the party’s National Leader, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, and Oshiomhole, met in Paris, France, on Thursday. Tinubu had gone to France ahead of the President’s visit to the country.

It was further learnt that the meeting between Tinubu and Oshiomhole centred on the growing plot by aggrieved party members especially governors to remove Oshiomhole from office.

The former Lagos State governor is one of the party stalwarts backing Oshiomhole who is now under probe by the Department of State Services.

An APC source said, “Tinubu and Oshiomhole met in Paris on Thursday over attempts by governors and some members of the NWC to remove the party chairman. You will recall that it was Asiwaju who paved the way for the emergence of Oshiomhole as the chairman when Chief Oyegun wanted a tenure extension.

Now that he has come under probe by the DSS and is being asked to step aside, he has run to Tinubu to save him. It remains unclear what their strategy will be to put a stop to the probe.”

It was also learnt that some aggrieved governors had begun reaching out to members of the National Working Committee to ask Oshiomhole to step aside pending the outcome of the DSS probe.

A member of the party’s NWC, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of retribution said, “The fact that Oshiomhole is under investigation for allegedly collecting money from aspirants is bad for the image of the APC government which claims to be fighting corruption.

It is for this reason that the NWC members are being asked (by interested parties) to push for the suspension of the APC chairman pending the outcome of the probe. The President’s body language and actions in the coming days will determine Oshiomhole’s fate. For now, we are still considering it but we don’t want to make any hasty decision until we are sure that we have the President’s backing.”

Another party source said high-ranking party leaders would meet “next week” to decide the best way to proceed without “further depleting the party’s public image and goodwill.”

It was also gathered that President Buhari, who has taken charge of efforts to resolve the party’s post primary crisis, would be convening the meeting.

Apart from Buhari, those expected at the Abuja meeting include: Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Tinubu, pioneer Interim National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu (as former chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party), and Prince Tony Momoh (former National Chairman of the Congress for Progressive Change).

The party source said, “The matter is receiving attention at the highest level. We cannot pretend, the situation involving our national chairman is already in public domain.

His invitation and subsequent interrogation by the Department of State Services, is an indictment if you ask me; but you cannot pronounce a man guilty without giving him the right of fair hearing.

The leadership meeting will take place because as you know, we don’t have a Board of Trustees in place. Mr. President as the leader of the party, who in fact, has personally taken over the process of dealing with the post-primary crisis, is convening the meeting to deal with all these issues.”

In response to a question on whether there were charges against the party chairman, he said, “Our party has a constitution, I refer you to Article 21 which deals with the issue of party discipline. Go and read sub-sections i, ii and xi.”

Article 21 of the APC Constitution (April 2014 As amended) which deals with the discipline of party members reads in part, “Subject to the provision of this Article and the right to fair hearing, the party shall have power to discipline party members. The power shall be exercised on behalf of the party by the respective Executive Committee of the party at all levels.

Offences against the party shall include the following: (i)a breach of any provision of this constitution; (i) anti-party activities or any conduct, which is likely to embarrass or have adverse effect on the party or put it into hatred, contempt, ridicule or disrepute; (xi) in cases of alteration of delegate lists, falsification of nomination results, and or tampering with the processes of internal democracy of the party, the offender shall be liable to expulsion from the party and be prosecuted.”

  • Alleged corruption: Untold story of how DSS held Oshiomhole hostage for eight hours

Details have emerged of how the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, was held hostage at the Department of State Security Service (DSS) for eight hours last Sunday at the behest of some governors and some forces in the party to force him to resign.

Oshiomhole, however, stood his ground and rebuffed the pressure mounted on him to resign.

He told the DSS that he committed no crime and would therefore not resign, no matter the intimidation.

Although the APC chairman was caught unawares, he maintained his stand even when DSS officials tried to invoke the name of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He pointedly told them that the President was in the know of all that happened during the APC primaries and that it was their collective resolve not to allow imposition of candidates by anybody, no matter his status in the party.

It later turned out that some security operatives had plotted Oshiomhole’s resignation with about six APC governors.

According to report by The Nation, plot to lay ambush for him was hatched by the affected governors in connivance with some powerful forces who were aggrieved over the outcome of the recent primaries of the APC.

The governors are from Southwest, Northcentral, Southeast and Northwest.

Four of them are angry with the party for not allowing them to impose their favourites as the party’s candidates in their states.

One Southwest governor is in sympathy with a fellow Southwest governor for standing by him recently when it mattered most.

The Northcentral governor is up in arms with Oshiomhole for insisting on direct primary.

There were insinuations that some former APC elements in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gave tacit backing to the plot by the APC governors in order to render the party weak ahead of the presidential campaign beginning from November 18.

It was gathered that the plotters knew that the APC national chairman was due for a private visit abroad, hence they opted to seal his fate before the trip.

The President was said to have been kept in the dark till the coup was hatched.

The plan was to hoodwink Buhari and present him with Oshiomhole’s resignation letter to prevent any intervention.

A reliable source, who spoke in confidence, said: “Some of the governors behind the ambush had relocated to Abuja ahead of the invitation of Oshiomhole by the DSS. I

In fact, one of them told a member of the Election Committee in his state to expect a major news on Sunday. He was quoted to have said ‘by Sunday, Oshiomhole is gone and all of you will be put to shame.’

They opted for forcible removal of Oshiomhole to take advantage of the substitution window for candidates.

The two options considered against Oshiomhole were either to get the DSS to arrest or invite him.

Some of the governors actually felt that arresting him on spurious charges of fraud would make greater news and prevent Buhari from intervening like he did in the case with some judges.

Unknown to the plotters, the APC national chairman had travelled to lyamho, his village in Edo State, to spend the weekend before jetting out to meet with his family abroad on Tuesday.

The trip to Edo frustrated the first leg of the plot as it was too late for the DSS operatives involved in the plot to stop him from traveling to Edo State.”

Another source gave insight into how Oshiomhole received DSS invitation and why he reported to the agency on Sunday.

The second source said: “Last Saturday, a call was put to Oshiomhole by a DSS operative in Iyamho with an urgent tone that he should report at the DSS headquarters. But the APC chairman was not moved because he did not commit any crime.

On Sunday, he returned to Abuja and honoured DSS invitation where he was told about a petition against him bothering on fraudulent activities.

For about eight hours, it was a ding dong affair between the DSS interrogators and Oshiomhole over a demand for his resignation letter.

Being an intelligent leader, Oshiomhole pointedly asked for a copy of the petition against him for his response, because he knew he did not engage in any fraud.

No petition was presented to him. He rebuffed all attempts to force him to resign.

While the drama was going on, the governors behind the set up were using some proxies to monitor Oshiomhole’s engagement with the DSS.

The Northcentral governor was said to be in his house in Abuja with an official of the party from a state also in the North who they had hoped to appoint as acting chairman.

The governor’s impunity in his state was condoned by the party before Oshiomhole took over but now, the governor is being asked to do things in accordance with the APC constitution.

He is also not happy that Oshiomhole is insisting on direct primaries.

His fear is that when his election is due later in 2019, direct primary will not favour him. He was one of the governors who told the public that the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) opted for indirect primaries some months back as against direct primary which was the preferred option.”

After being adamant for many hours, Oshiomhole was let off the hook by the DSS.

He insisted that he would not resign without hearing from the President and they could not provide any evidence that the President knew about their action.

On how he left DSS custody, the source said: “In fact, a governor of the APC came to pick him. There was no issue of surety at all.

It was uncertain if the governor was just being benevolent or was one of the plotters.

The governors who were in Abuja had already put a media plan in place to force the NWC to issue a statement that Oshiomhole has resigned.

The governors later realised that the plot had failed as soon as Oshiomhole survived the siege in DSS headquarters.

Curiously, some forces in PDP were also in a hotel trying to know the outcome of the unfolding drama in APC, having been told of the plot by their collaborating governors.

Findings, however, confirmed that the President was not aware of either his invitation or the demand for his resignation.

A presidency source added: “The President was shocked and angry when Oshiomhole met with him on Monday on his ordeal. He promised to look into the incident.

What the aggrieved governors did not know is that the APC chairman was always briefing the President on the challenges facing the party in some states. So, the President and Oshiomhole are always on the same page.

There was a time one of the governors went to meet with the President and raised some issues. After the governor’s narration, the President made a call and gave the phone to the governor, saying: ‘The chairman on the line. Speak with him.’

The affected governor was speechless and left the Presidential Villa in shame.”

Buoyed by the backing of the President, Oshiomhole left the country on Tuesday to meet his family.

A party source said: “He had already scheduled his personal trip. He was undaunted. He is not on exile. He has not committed any fraud.”

The embattled party chairman is however expected in the country from London today.

  • Oshiomole departs London for Nigeria

The national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, has departed London to Nigeria.

Multiple sources familiar with the ruling party’s chairman said he boarded a British Airways flight bound for Lagos from the British capital, and is expected to arrive later today.

According to a report by Premium Times, the former Edo State governor met with the party’s national leader, Bola Tinubu, in London within the last two days. Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, has been receiving medical treatment for undisclosed ailments in London.

It was not immediately clear when Oshiomhole left Nigeria, but his departure was largely speculated as being prompted by an investigation into how he handled the APC primaries across the country. The exercise held between September and October, producing the party’s candidates for presidential, governorship and legislative offices.

Several APC governors whom Oshiomhole apparently blocked from nominating successors have been publicly fuming with the party chairman.

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha and Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun have been particularly furious with Mr Oshiomhole, publicly accusing him of disregarding party’s constitution in the conduct of primaries and demanding his immediate removal.

Both Governors Amosun and Okorocha believe Oshiomhole has the backing of Tinubu, whose influence over party affairs is widely acknowledged even though he does not hold a formal position.

Oshiomhole has denied all allegations of fraud against him, and challenged whoever has issues with his leadership to leave the party.

  • 2019: APC lawmakers recount loses, lampoon Oshiomhole, INEC over controversial primaries

Lawmakers elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC in the lower chamber of National Assembly have cried out about the irregularities and maltreatment meted out to them over the just concluded primary election of the party.

In a motion of urgent public importance Hon. Abubakar Chika Adamu (Niger, APC) lambasted the ruling party for what he called lack of internal democracy in the conduct of the party primary.

Adamu in his debate on the motion lamented the lack of internal democracy in the conduct of the APC primary election in Rafinya/Shiroro/Munya Federal Constituency of Niger State which he represents at the green chamber of the National Assembly.

The lawmaker said that the the party primary was full of irregularities and manipulations and accused the party leadership of bias.

He further accused the party of orchestrating a scam and lamented that party nomination forms were too exorbitant and outrageous.

According to the lawmaker, the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC abdicated its responsibility during the primary election as the supervisor of political parties in as provided for in Sec 7 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

He further expressed displeasure over the conduct of some state governors who were hell bent on installation of their stooges as governor inspite of clear provisions of the party’s constitution.

He also hinted that there were cases of violent attack on innocent citizens by thugs and party agents during the primary election in his state.

The APC lawmaker therefore asked the House to set up an Ad-hoc Committee to investigate the matter and have a report on the party primary.

Speaking in support, Hon.Adekunle Akinlade (Ogun, APC) who contested the governorship ticket of the party in his state and lost said that the party shortchanged so many of its members during the exercise.

He stated that he clearly won the Ogun State APC governorship primary but the APC party leadership decided to share the position to other contenders for the ticket.

Also in his contributions, Hon. Muhammad Soba (Kaduna, APC) said that he felt shortchanged during the party primary in APC his former party and added that the forms were too exorbitant.

Even PDP lawmakers as Hon. Nnenna Ukeje (Abia, PDP), Hon. Sergius Ogun (Edo, PDP) and some other lawmakers expressed displeasure over the conduct of the primary elections of their own party. However they hailed the embittered APC lawmaker as he spoke on his own case shouting: “fire on, fire on”.

The final heat came from Prof.Mojeed Alabi (Osun,APC) a professor of Political Science who stated that the the conduct of the APC primary is faulty and added that political parties by their formation and orientation are oligarchic in nature.

Consequently, the Speaker Hon. Yakubu Dogara who presided the session threw the matter to vote and it was overwhelmingly voted for.

Dogara thereafter constituted the Ad-hoc Committee and named Hon.Edward Pwajork (Plateau, APC) as Chairman. Other members include Hon Olayounu Tope (Kwara, APC) and Hon. Baballe Bashir (Kano, APC) among others.
