Two of Oshiomhole’s commissioners as Edo gov kick against his senatorial ambition

Two commissioners in Mr Adams Oshiomhole’s cabinet while he was Edo governor, Chief Lucky James, (Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs) and Mrs Inumidun Idehen (Women Affairs) have kicked against Oshiomhole’s senatorial ambition.

Oshiomhole, also former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) declared his intention on April 4, to contest for the Edo North senatorial district seat on the platform of the APC.

The two former commissioners issued a joint statement in Benin on Thursday, pitching their tent with incumbent Sen. Francis Alimikhena and pledging their support for his re-election.

The statement was personally signed by James, Oshiomhiole’s kinsman and Mrs Idehen whom Oshiomhole dropped from his cabinet in June 2012, one month to the governorship election in Edo.

They submitted that the re-election of Alimikhena, instead of replacing him with Oshiohole would guarantee a bigger deal for the senatorial district.

“Edo North APC youths should work in synergy with their respective leaders to ensure victory for Sen. Alimikhena.

“To show the seriousness attached to Alimikhena’s re-election, his campaign organisation has been strengthened and our principal is the first to obtain the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms,’’ the statement read.

It quoted Idehen as saying: “at my age and with my pedigree, I cannot deceive my own people. I owe it a duty to lead rightly and Alimikhena is the right person for 2023 Senate.’’

She urged the people to do the right thing by nominating and supporting Alimikhena for another term of office.

Reacting to the statement, a leader of the APC in Akoko-Edo, Mr Ayo Olowojoba, said support for Oshiomhole would drag the senatorial district backward.

“We cannot be dragging Afemai backward by allowing a new person to go to senate. We will deliver Alimikhena by our unity, especially the Owan and Akoko-Edos,’’ he said.

    …tenders apology to Oshiomhole

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on Monday, described his Edo State counterpart, Godwin Obaseki as a serial traitor and an ungrateful personality.

Reacting to an advertorial credited to Obaseki over the crisis in the Edo State Chapter of PDP, Wike said, the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomole, has been vindicated on the position he took against Obaseki which forced his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party.

“If you ask anybody or check the DNA of Obaseki, you will discover that he is a serial betrayer and an ungrateful person. I apologise to Oshiomole who told us about Obaseki. You have been vindicated”, he said .

According to Wike, everything Oshiomhole said about the character of the Edo State Governor had come to pass, adding that he (Wike), has tendered an unreserved apology to Oshiomole for ignoring his warnings about Obaseki.

Oshiomhole denies calling Makinde ‘over hyped social media governor’

Adams Oshiomhole, former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has denied tweets describing Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State ‘an over hyped social media governor’.

The tweets ascribed to Oshiomhole denigrated the governor amongst other issues.

However, the former, in a statement signed by his media aide, Victor Oshioke on Sunday, distanced himself from the handle.

The APC National Chairman described the Twitter handle as fake.

According to the former Comrade governor, the handle is not operated by him or any of his aides.

The statement reads: “The attention of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has been drawn to a series of tweets from a twitter account @A_Oshiomhole commenting on recent national issues. Specifically, there was a tweet that originated from this account on January 20, 2022 which seem to insinuate that H. E. Seyi Makinde, Executive Governor of Oyo State is an “Overhyped Social Media Governor.”

“We wish to alert the general public that this twitter account is fake as it is not operated by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole or any of his aides.”

The APC chieftain stressed that he holds Makinde in high esteem; hence has no reason to disparage him privately or publicly.

“Let it be on record that all tweets that have originated from this account or will originate from it in the future do not represent the opinions or sentiments of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.”

Oshiomhole also disassociated himself from some Twitter handles carrying his names and photographs.

    “Some of them are: @adamsoshiomhole, @Oshiomhole, @adamsosh, @_adamsoshiomole, @adamsOshiomhol, @Adamsoshiomol4, @Adamsoshiomol5”

Disclosing his handle, the former APC National Chairman said his “official handle which will be verified soon is @aoshiomhole.”

  • Oshiomhole, Secondus ‘sacrificial lamb’ for ambitions, By Ehichioya Ezomon

Oshiomhole, Secondus ‘sacrificial lamb’ for ambitions, By Ehichioya Ezomon

    By Ehichioya Ezomon
Coincidences! Ironies! Similarities! Ambitions! Retributions! These are the issues that played out in the ruling All Progressive Congress, and are tearing apart the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, as regards the national chairmen of the rival political parties.
In 2020, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole was sacked as chair of the National Working Committee of the APC despite his piloting of the party to an across-board victory in the 2019 general election.
Currently, the national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, is on the verge of going the Oshiomhole way, courtesy of orchestrated campaign to get him out by any means possible.
As the judiciary was prompted to “intervene” in the internal matters of the APC in 2020, the courts have been drafted in to “interfere” in the domestic affairs of the PDP in 2021, and courts of coordinate jurisdiction are issuing conflicting rulings on the same matters.
Like in Oshiomhole’s case, two Southern courts have suspended Secondus from acting or parading himself as the national chairman of the PDP, while a Northern court has reinstated him forthwith.
And as it happened in the APC crisis, aftermath of Oshiomhole’s suspension, two deputy chairmen of the PDP scrambled to occupy Secondus’s office and control the PDP secretariat in Abuja.
Interestingly, the coincidences, ironies and similarities in the APC and PDP scenarios originated from Oshiomhole and Secondus’s home states of Edo and Rivers in the South-South zone.
More concerning is that the Oshiomhole and Secondus matters are grounded in political ambition of one governor fighting to retain his position, and another governor aiming for a higher office.
Oshiomhole earned the ire of Governor Godwin Obaseki, for attempting, and eventually thwarting his nomination for re-election on the platform of the APC that Oshiomhole then superintended.
And for retribution, Obaseki reportedly instigated Oshiomhole’s suspension by 10 of a 26-man APC executive committee of Oshiomhole’s ward in his local government area of Edo State.
As Oshiomhole called the bluff of his suspension by the minority ward executive, the matter was advanced to the courts, with the lower and appeals courts affirming his suspension.
The last straw came via the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the APC, which sacked the Oshiomhole-led NWC, and replaced it with a Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee.
To think that Oshiomhole and Obaseki were political soul mates, and Oshiomhole, as governor, groomed, picked, campaigned and secured victory for Obaseki to succeed him in office in 2016, only for Obaseki to ignite the fire – rekindled by APC members nursing presidential ambition – that literally consumed Oshiomhole!
Satirically, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, who heads the APC caretaker committee, is mired in controversy over his eligibility for holding the position concurrently as governor, and under pressure from dissatisfied APC members to resign the chair.
Besides, the PDP has mounted attacks in Abuja and Yobe, to get Buni relieved of the offices of chairman of the APC and governor of Yobe, and, like the aggrieved APC members, the party is in court, praying for the sack of Buni from Abuja and Yobe, accordingly.
On his part, Prince Secondus has incurred the wrath of fiery Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, credited as the sole sponsor and installer of Secondus to the chair of the PDP.
So, why would Wike call for Secondus’s head, his protégée, who, as the saying goes, “has been very loyal” to the governor? Ambition! Raw and vaunting ambition that brooks no scruple!
Wike hasn’t indicated interest for any office, but his body language is unmistaken for the President or Vice President, to enhance his profile and compensate for shouldering the PDP since 2015.
Yet, there’s an obstacle to Wike getting his dream realised, and that’s Secondus, whose retention of the PDP chair beyond 2021 may put spanner in the governor’s well-oiled works for 2023.
Secondus had to go prior to the PDP national convention, as Wike allegedly fears that without his support, Secondus could swing a second term in office, and put paid to his presidential aspiration.
With Secondus back in office, the PDP would zone the presidential ticket to the North, and Wike’s ambition would be up in flames, as he and Secondus are from Rivers in the South-South.
Getting Secondus out of the way initially involved simultaneous protests by groups in the PDP for him to resign, and the sudden resignation of seven party officers, to pile pressure on him.
Several meetings by PDP stakeholders culminated in bringing forward the national convention from December to October 2021, to give Secondus a breather and soft-landing, and mollify Wike.
That didn’t work, as Secondus reportedly planned to botch the October convention. Hence, four PDP members sought an interim injunction to stop him from further holding the party chair.
Still, as the high court in Rivers State granted the plaintiffs’ ex parte application, suspending Secondus pending the determination of the substantive suit; a counter-ruling of a court in Kebbi State reinstated Secondus, in a suit brought by three PDP members.
But not before, like in the Oshiomhole case in the APC, a struggle to occupy the Secondus briefly-vacated national chair of the PDP NWC pitted two national vice chairmen against each other.
The Deputy National Chairman (North), Sulaiman Nazif, citing “incapacitation” of the Deputy National Chairman (South), Elder Yemi Akinwonmi, had usurped the post as acting chairman.
Barely three hours later, Elder Akinwonmi showed up at the same PDP secretariat in Abuja, flanked by the party National Secretary, Ibrahim Tsauri, who had accompanied Nazif earlier on.
Noting Nazif’s taking undue advantage of his indisposition, Akinwonmi declared that, “everything conducted here while I was not here is null and void,” adding that, “at the appropriate time, we will call a meeting of NEC, BoT and we will meet here.”
Akinwonmi was unanimously endorsed by the NWC, and the PDP Governors’ Forum, whose chairman and Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, said the party would abide by the Rivers court dictate that Secondus should step aside.
The question then was: Would the PDP also obey the ruling of the Kebbi court that ordered immediate reinstatement of Secondus in the legal issues filed against the PDP and Secondus?
That looked unlikely as at August 27 when the PDP caucus met at the party secretariat in Abuja. With Secondus absent, Akinwonmi presided, and the October national convention was re-affirmed.
In the mix came spokesman, Ike Abonyi, refuting a report that Secondus would challenge his suspension, even as Secondus reportedly stated that, based on his reinstatement, he’d return to his seat on August 27, but didn’t show up at the caucus parley.
But social media reports claimed that Secondus resumed office on August 27, and Akinwonmi handed over to him. The News Agency of Nigeria quoted Secondus thus: “We obeyed the court order from Port Harcourt. We also obey the one of yesterday (Thursday). This is a party that follows the rule of law, that obeys court orders.”
There wasn’t a timeline to the said event, but Akinwonmi had reportedly admitted that he’s handed a letter, which he didn’t reveal its content, as he arrived for the caucus meeting on August 27.
Was that “letter” a notice of the Kebbi court ruling, which restored Secondus to his office, and had to be obeyed by Elder Akinwonmi in tune with PDP’s boast of respecting lawful court orders?
Again, not surprising, a court in Cross River State was to intervene in the PDP crisis on August 27, barring Secondus from functioning as national chairman or presiding over the August 28 meeting of the National Executive Committee of the PDP.
Perhaps, in deference to the latest court order, Secondus wasn’t at the NEC meeting, as at the time of this report, on August 28. But will he also abstain from office on August 30 (today)?
Whatever, Secondus may go the way of Oshiomhole, to complete the cycle of coincidences, ironies and similarities of events in the APC and PDP that aren’t happenstance, but contrived for political ambition, with retribution visited on the likes of Oshiomhole and Secondus for constituting “obstacles” to achieving the aspiration!

  • My objective of joining APC achieved – Oshiomhole

My objective of joining APC achieved – Oshiomhole

Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, says he does not need to be the national chairman to remain relevant and serve the party.

“I’m still active in all APC activities and I don’t think that I need to be a chairman to be relevant,” he said on Saturday during the fundraising and investiture for Victoria Unuoarumi as the 10th President of the Rotary Club of Maitama, Abuja.

Oshiomhole noted that he didn’t join the party to become chairman.

“I joined in order to form an alternative platform capable of kicking PDP out of power and that objective was achieved.

“It doesn’t matter the way things have gone. The primary purpose was not for me to be APC chairman,” the former Edo State governor buttressed.

He also noted that he has no regrets that he was removed as APC chairman and that he has accepted all that happened in good faith.

Speaking about the 2023 presidential election, Oshiomhole said he is optimistic that “God will not forsake a nation of 200 million people”.

While agreeing that Nigeria’s democracy is not perfect, the former Labour leader said he is certain that the nation will press on.

“I believe that God in his infinite mercy will help Nigeria to sustain its democracy and guide us, as we move towards 2023 and the country will go forward.

“I want all of you to realise that I always make this point because Nigeria is much bigger than the total sum of the problems bedevilling it. So I am an optimist,” the former APC national chairman averred.

  • I’m still an active APC member – Oshiomhole

I’m still an active APC member – Oshiomhole

Mr Adams Oshiomhole, former National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), says he is still an active member of the party, in spite of his removal from office.

Oshiomhole said this when he spoke with newsmen at the sideline of the fundraising and investiture of Mrs Victoria Unuoarumi as the 10th President of Rotary Club of Maitama, Abuja.

He said although an appeal court has voided his removal from office, he has chosen to sleep on his right on the matter.

“The court judgement was delivered on July 2, 2020 about two weeks after I was removed from office. I decided to make it public because

“I saw many commentaries suggesting that people were not aware that the case was dismissed. It was over a year that the case was dismissed.

“Initially I was not bothered, but when I saw the way commentators were talking on the issue, I realised that they were apparently not well informed that the case was dismissed.

“I said I should let the world know about it and we published it,” Oshiomhole who was also the chairman of the event said.

He said however, that he had no regret leaving as APC chairman.

“I have no regret leaving as APC chairman.

“Let me repeat what I said shortly after the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC was dissolved, when I spoke with journalists then.

“I said then that regardless of the legality or illegality of the issue, I accepted what happened in good faith and I remain committed to doing whatever I can to support the party.

“Am still active in all APC activities and I don’t think that I needed to be a chairman to be of relevance.

“I didn’t join the party to become chairman, I joined in order to form an alternative platform capable of kicking PDP out of power and that objective was achieved.

“It doesn’t matter the way things have gone. The primary purpose was not for me to be APC chairman,” Oshiomhole said.

The former national chairman expressed optimism that Nigeria would hold a hitch free general elections in 2023.

“I have hope for 2023. God will not forsake a nation of 200 million people in 2023, our democracy has come to stay, although it’s not perfect, a couple of things could be done to strengthen it.

“I believe that God in his infinite mercy will help Nigeria to sustain its democracy and guide us, as we move towards 2023 and the country will go forward.

“I want all of you to realise that I always make this point, because Nigeria is much bigger than the total sum of the problems bedevilling it. So am an optimist, ” he said.

Earlier in her acceptance speech, Unuoarumi promised to strive hard to take the club to the next level.

“I am indeed humbled and immensely grateful to all members of our great club for finding me worthy to serve them. It is with great joy and humility that I accept to serve as the 10th President of our great club.

“As a servant leader, I pledge to work with my fellow teammates and volunteers in selfless service to take our club to the next level,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some distinguished Nigerians were honoured at the event for their numerous contributions towards the development of the country.

They included Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, Dr Ramatu Aliyu, Minister for State for FCT, Dr Edwin Clark, Sen. Sani Ahmed, Chief Lawrence Ojemeni, former FCT Minister Aliyu Modibbo, Chief Sanni Felicia, Dr Joy Okoro and Mr Yusuf Ali.

‘He actively participated in my ousting’, Oshiomhole rubbishes claims Keyamo working to reinstate him as APC National chairman

Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has denied plotting to return to office.

He distanced himself from the leadership crisis rocking the ruling party.

Oshiomhole, in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday by his media aide, Victor Oshioke, described the speculation as false.

He reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC under the leadership of Governor Mai-Mala Buni.

The former Edo Governor dissociated himself from a statement credited to Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, a self-styled aide of a Minister from the South-South quoted to have said Festus Keyamo, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, and others were plotting to return Oshiomhole to office.

The former APC Chairman said the statement was far from the truth, recalling the role Keyamo played in the dissolution of the National Working Committee (NWC) in 2020.

Oshiomhole said: “Our attention has been drawn to a statement credited to Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, a former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who is now a member of the APC and self-styled aide of Minister of Transportation, Chief Rotimi Amaechi.

“In the said statement widely reported in the media, Chief Eze was quoted as saying that Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN, Hon. Minister of State for Labour and Employment and others were plotting to bring back Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as national chairman of the APC.

“Ordinarily we would have ignored this nonsensical suggestion. However, it is pertinent to set the records straight and put to rest this ridiculous falsehood being marketed by Eze Chukwuemeka Eze.”

Oshiomhole recalled Keyamo was in the forefront and provided legal support through his legal assistants in court and argued on behalf of those that filed cases for his removal.

“Keyamo also offered legal advice on the legality of the NEC that was convened for the dissolution of the Oshiomhole led National Working Committee of APC and emergence of the Governor Mai-Mala Buni led Caretaker Committee.

“It is therefore frivolous for any right-thinking person to assume that Keyamo who actively supported the removal of the National chairman elected by over 6, 500 party delegates from across the 36 states and the FCT because 8 out of 27 Ward executive members purportedly suspended a national party chairman, would now plot to bring the same Oshiomhole back to the office.”

The former chairman said he will not be part of any plot to destabilise or ridicule the party in any way or for any reason.

He stressed he took serious exemptions to his name being dragged into an issue that he has no hand in.

“This is an opportunity to further reaffirm Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s loyalty to the APC under the able leadership of His Excellency, Governor Mai-Mala Buni.

“Oshiomhole’s position is that all hands should be on deck to support the Governor Mai-Mala Buni led Caretaker Committee to complete its assignment rather than creating distractions that are counterproductive to the mandate of the committee.

“He congratulates Governor Mai Mala Buni and the entire members of the Caretaker Committee for their efforts in depleting the ranks of Governors of the PDP by winning three of them into the APC fold.”

Edo government, Oshiomhole, others mourn as family announces Okunbo’s death

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, yesterday, expressed shock and grief over the death of Captain Hosa Okunbo, describing the deceased as a great Edo son, brother, distinguished Nigerian, an illustrious businessman, and accomplished philanthropist.

This followed as the family of late Evangelist Robert Amos Okunbo of Orhua Town, Uhunmwode Council Edo State, announced the demise of Okunbo, who passed on in London battling pancreatic cancer.

The family made the announcement in a statement signed by the head of the Okunbo family, Dr. Tinyan Okunbo, and released by the deceased’ Media Consultant, Samuel Ajayi.

In a statement, Obaseki said: “As a man of unparalleled energy and accomplishments, Okunbo saw opportunities in adversity and from an early age in life, carved a niche for himself to become one of Nigeria’s most outstanding businessmen.”

He described Okunbo as a philanthropist, who gave lavishly of himself and his resources, adding that thousands of Edo indigenes benefited from his charitable works and benevolence.

Obaseki commiserated with the Okunbo family, friends, and associates and prayed to God to grant all the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Reacting, to the incident, former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, expressed shock and disbelief over the death of Okunbo.

“I am in disbelief, shock, and deep pain. It is hard to come to terms with the reality that Captain is no more and words cannot appropriately capture the dark mood cast upon our land this day,” he said.
Also, Doctors in the Commonwealth of Nations and Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clement Agba mourned Okunbo.

A statement issued by the President, Commonwealth Medical Association (CMA), Dr. Osahon Enabulele, described the death as a tragedy.

On his part, Agba said his death had created a huge vacuum that would be difficult to fill, adding that the deceased made a huge difference in the lives of countless people through his philanthropy.

  • Court rejects suits seeking reinstatement of Oshiomhole, sack of Buni-led APC Caretaker Committee

Court rejects suits seeking reinstatement of Oshiomhole, sack of Buni-led APC Caretaker Committee

A Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out two suits challenging the dissolution of the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and sought the avoiding of the succeeding National Caretaker Committee led by Yobe State Governor, Mai-Mala Buni.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo, in two rulings on Tuesday held that the plaintiffs lacked the locus standi (the legal right) to institute their cases against the party.

The first suit was filed by a former South-South National Vice Chairman of the party, Hilliard Eta in the name of APC, while the second suit was instituted by a former APC Youth Leader in Abia state, Kalu Kalu Agu.

Plaintiffs in both suits, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/736/2020 and FHC/ABJ/CS/1589/2021 had sought an order to determine the legality or otherwise of the June 17, 2020 National Executive Committee meeting which dissolved the NWC and appointed a National Caretaker Committee led by Yobe State Governor, Mai-Mala Buni.

They had prayed the court to reverse the dissolution of the Oshiomhole-led NWC and declare the Buni-led NWC unlawful.

Upholding the separate preliminary objections filed by the defendants, the court held that the plaintiffs did not show or prove how the dissolution of the NWC on June 17, 2020 by 16 out of 20 members of APC NEC infringed on their civil rights and obligation more than any other member of the party.

“There must be a nexus between a plaintiff and the cause of action,” the judge said, and noted that the first plaintiff did not fit properly into who a plaintiff should be, while the second plaintiff, Hilliard Eta “referred to himself as a regular member of the party.”

The judge observed that, for the APC to be a plaintiff in the suit, there must be the existence of a faction, noting that there was nowhere the second plaintiff claimed to belong to a faction of the party, in the affidavit he deposed to.

“I am of the well considered view that issues raised by the plaintiffs are not justiceable. They are issues of internal affairs of a political party.

“It is sheer waste of time and there is no reason to consider the substantive matter,” the judge said, and proceeded to strike out both cases.
