Obaseki, Oshiomhole applaud A’Court verdict, say Edo never voted PDP

Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, on Friday, praised the judgement of the Court of Appeal, which upheld his victory at the September 28, 2016 Governorship Election.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Court of Appeal, on Friday morning, dismissed the election petition filed by both the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, noting that the Tribunal did a painstaking job and should be commended for its judgment.

Commending the appellate court’s verdict, the governor said that the truth would always prevail and he was prepared to appear at the Supreme Court over the case because he won the election and both God and his ancestors had reaffirmed that he won so they (PDP and Ize-Iyamu) could not change the truth.

In addition, the governor appreciated the support of Edo citizens, assuring them that his administration was not distracted by the lingering election petition cases, that he would rededicate himself to good governance, and that he would continue the appointments of political appointees.

Meanwhile, Oshiomhole declared that the people of Edo State never voted for PDP and that the Court of Appeal had reaffirmed the fact that they were clear on the sustenance of Governor Obaseki’s policies, who, he observed, had not been distracted from the business of good governance.

He said: “At a time when most states cannot pay salaries, in Edo, he is paying a minimum wage even higher than what the federal government stipulated. What more can we say? Well, naturally we are excited. I am sure they also did very careful and detailed evaluation of the petitioners’ case and the response of our party as respondents.”

He continued that this was why he concluded that the petition was of the busybody category and that the truth was clear for everyone, who followed and did detailed evaluations, to see.

“Edo people never voted PDP,” he explained.

“They have not forgotten in a hurry the misrule of PDP for thirteen years in this state and sixteen years at the federal level. They could not have voted PDP, so it was clear that they lost it at the ballot box,” Oshiomhole said.

Obaseki’s victory: Oshiomhole hails judgment, says judiciary remains hope for common man

Immediate past governor of Edo State, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, on Friday commended the judgment delivered by the Election Petitions Tribunal on the Edo 2016 Governorship Election, affirming the election of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Speaking to newsmen in Benin, Oshiomhole said the judiciary still remained the hope for common man.

“The judgment is sound and a testimony that the people of Edo never voted for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

‘‘The petition was a busy body one to distract the electorate; this was just like ‘Mama Akara’ judgment going to see over non-issue.’’

Oshiomhole further said that the judgment has shown that there were still men and women of good character in the judiciary.

‘‘This will serve as a deterrent to some people who can say whatever they like about the judiciary.

‘‘But it has shown it (judiciary) has men & women of good charter of courage and knowledge,’’ he said.

In a relayed development, the counsel to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Victor Ohiosunua, has appealed to PDP chieftains to support Obaseki to develop the state.

Ohiosunua made the call in in Benin after the Election Petitions Tribunal in Benin dismissed the petition filed by PDP candidate, Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu, challenging Obaseki’s election.

“I want to appeal to the petitioners to joining hands with the governor to develop and carry the state to the next level.

‘‘The business of the governor is tedious and the few five months the present governor has spent in the office, shows his capability and focus to take Edo to the next level.

‘‘The logical order the tribunal made today is the right one for them to make.

‘‘We are happy that the votes and wishes of the Edo people who voted on Sept. 28, 2016 has been restored,” Ohiosunua said.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Justice Ahmed Badamasi-led three-member Tribunal had dismissed the petitioners’ claims based on no credible evidence to prove their case.

The tribunal, therefore, upheld Obaseki’s victory in the governorship election of Sept. 28, 2016, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

On his part, Ken Muzia (SAN), counsel to Obaseki who also commended the tribunal’s judgment, said the tribunal did a proper review of the evidence.

“The tribunal has done a fantastic job, what we should be thinking of is the development of the state,” Muzia added.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Ize-Iyamu and his party, PDP has however rejected the the ruling of the tribunal with a promise to appeal the judgement and also pursue the case to the Supreme Court.

Obaseki bans Oshiomhole’s private task collectors

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has declared as invalid arrangements by previous administrations (both at the state and local government levels) in the state to involve private tax collectors in generating revenues for the government.

The governor who stated the lawlessness with which the tax officials go about their activities said his administration will not condone inflicting more hardships on the citizens who are already feeling the economic bites of recession in the country.

Obaseki in his New Year address to the people, expressed gratitude and appreciation to them for overwhelmingly entrusting him with the responsibility to take charge and to steer the socio-economic and political destiny of the State.

I am aware of the enormity of the trust and confidence you have reposed in me and by the grace of God Almighty I will meet your expectations”, he assured.

Obaseki, who reviewed the socio-economic activities of 2016 and concluded that it was indeed harsh, however, exuded confidence that 2017 would be better for the people of the state.

As we reflect on 2016, we have every reason to be thankful to God Almighty for preserving us and our country; 2016 was a year of challenges, difficulties, excitements and opportunities.

Undoubtedly, the economic recession unleashed unprecedented difficulties on individuals, families and communities as no aspect of our economic and social life was spared the severe economic hardship.

Because of the drop in the price of crude oil and the vandalism of pipelines; we saw the value of our currency decline significantly.

We also saw industries and businesses shut down while people lost their jobs, the level of unemployment has continued to rise; all these have thus led to increase in crime and poverty in the land.

In spite of the difficulties and gloom, 2016 nonetheless experienced some bright moments for us in Edo state for which we are grateful to the Almighty,’’ Obaseki said.

I must quickly mention that one issue that continues to agitate Edo people is the lawless activities of some individuals who persist in harassing and extorting innocent citizens under the guise of collecting taxes and levies.

The laws of our country vest the responsibility for collecting taxes exclusively on the three tiers of government – federal, state and local governments.

Consequently, with immediate effect, only employees of government can collect taxes and levies in the state.

All arrangements to collect taxes or levies entered into by any state or local government agency in Edo State, cease to be valid”, he stated.

He urged the citizens not to cave in to any form of intimidation, but to rather “call or alert law enforcement agencies if they find anyone involved in such nefarious activities.”
