  • State House hospital to henceforth serve only me, Osinbajo – Buhari orders

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that the State House Medical Centre (SHMC) revert to a Clinic to serve only the first and second families.

By implication, the clinic will no longer be accessible to any other except President Buhari and members of his immediate family and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and members of his immediate family as well.

The Permanent Secretary, State House, Mr Jalal Arabi, announced this on Monday, when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs for the 2019 budget defence.

Without prejudice to what is currently obtainable at SHMC, the intention to revert to a clinic is a Presidential directive. This is to make sure that the facility is functional and serves the purpose for which it was established, ab initio,” he was quoted in a statement by the Deputy Director (Information), Mr. Attah Esa.

Arabi explained that the reversion of the Centre to a Clinic was a case of ‘‘cutting one’s coat according to your cloth.’’

‘‘It was initially meant to serve the first and second families and those working within and around the Villa.

‘‘The overstretching of facilities at the Medical Centre by patients is some of the challenges the Centre have been going through. It wasn’t meant for that purpose.

‘‘Nobody was charging anyone for any services and relying on appropriation means we will depend on subvention when it comes to run the Centre.

‘‘Whatever comes is what you utilise and if the last patient comes in to take the last drugs based on the last budgetary release, that is it and we have to wait till another release is done.

‘‘But this new development means that services will be streamlined to a clinic that will serve those that it was meant to serve when it was conceived,’’ the Permanent Secretary said.

The Centre was a focal point during the 2-hour presentation and budget defence by the Permanent Secretary before the Senate Committee.

Arabi disclosed that the Centre had a total budget of N1.03 bn in the 2018 appropriation, with N698 million as capital expenditure and N331.7 million as overhead cost.

The total overhead expenditure released for the Centre from January – December 2018 was N331.7m, representing 99.9 percent while the capital releases on projects is N231.9m, representing 33.2 percent.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Committee, Sen. Danjuma La’ah (PDP-Kaduna South) welcomed the proposal to make the SHMC fully functional and ensure that members of the first and second families use the facilities at the clinic.

Senator La’ah assured that committee will support full funding for the Clinic and commended the 2018 budget performance in State House, compared to previous years, despite revenue challenges.

  • Why Nigeria is finding it difficult to make progress under Buhari – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday explained why the President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government is having challenges making any progress since assumption of office.

The Vice President said the major problem facing Nigeria is lack of integrity on the part of its leaders.

Osinbajo said the ugly trend reared its head more especially with past leadership of the country.

He made these remarks while speaking at the 11th colloquium of the All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Bola Tinubu, on Thursday.

Osinbajo, representing President Muhammadu Buhari at the event, said bad leadership of the past cost the country major infrastructural development.

He blamed past governments for being wasteful in times of abundance.

I have said it before, Nigeria’s main problem is not a lack of ideas, it’s not. Most of the time, especially with the leadership of the past, it is lack of integrity in leadership and corruption in particular and it is the reason we are finding it difficult to make any progress.

That is why we earned $383 billion in four years – 2010 to 2014 – the highest ever in the history of our country and yet Lagos-Ibadan expressway not done, all of what is being done today not done.

We cannot point to a single major project, a single major infrastructure project that was completed in the ten years period despite the high wealth, including power. So, a government coming after so many years of waste must be a government that first, emphasises fiscal prudence, a government that emphasises integrity in public finance so that we manage the little resources we have to achieve the maximum that can be achieved and that is what President Muhammadu Buhari has set out to do.”

Osinbajo, who served as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State during Tinubu’s administration, eulogised the APC leader

We do it (the colloquium) in celebration of a man who has spent the last 30 years of his life in creative public service. Right from the days of being Lagos governor, he provided clarity of thought and rare vision in all aspects of life.

Once in a while, I think that history gives us people who are gifted transformative leaders and I believe that our country has been gifted by this transformative leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.

Osinbajo thereafter reeled out the aspirations of the Buhari administration under the next level mantra.

Describing it as biggest in Africa, he said the government is working to expand the Social Intervention Program (SIP).

On health, he said the focus of the government is on health insurance as the government ‘cannot finance health care on budget alone.’

Dignitaries at the event include outgoing Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode; his Kano State counterpart, Abdullahi Ganduje; Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello; Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari; Mr Tinubu’s wife and a senator representing Lagos Central, Oluremi Tinubu; APC chairman Adams Oshiomole, among many others.

  • Osinbajo responds to reports of suspending ‘TraderMoni tours’ after presidential elections

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has reacted to report making the rounds of the alleged suspension of Trader Moni empowerment scheme.

Reports had it that Osinbajo had suspended the scheme after presidential election and has not toured any state to promote Trader Moni in the last one month.

Reacting, however, Osinbajo Media Aide, Laolu Akande, debunked the report.

According to him, Trader Moni has not been suspended contrary to reports in a section of the media.

Laolu on his Twitter page wrote: “Trader Moni, the interest/collateral free N10,000 loans for petty traders is on course. Ignore reports to the contrary.

“In fact, since after the elections, about 30,000 new loans have been given across ten states.

“Also since traders have started repaying, N15,000 disbursements.”

Trader Moni is an initiative of the Federal Government, through Bank of Industry and Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme.

The programme is part of the Federal Government social intervention aimed at funding micro business in the country through soft loans beginning from N10, 000.

  • Buhari now a poorer man than he was in 2015 – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday night said that President Muhammadu Buhari was probably poorer than when he was elected in 2015.

Osinbajo spoke during a dinner in honour of volunteers who canvassed for votes for the APC during the campaigns for this year’s general election, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said “When I looked at his assets declaration form, I was checking it in 2015, I said to him, “Mr President, I am so much richer than you, it is an embarrassment.”

He said, “I am only a soldier, you are a big lawyer so you should have more money than me.”

I can tell you that he is perhaps; even poorer than he was in 2015 when I saw his declaration of assets form.”

He also urged Nigerians to vote for the All Progressives Congress in the March 23 supplementary elections.

The supplementary elections will take place in six states of Nigeria where the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared last Saturday’s gubernatorial election inconclusive.

He said “We are still not done with the elections.

On the 23rd of March, we still have some outstanding states and as you know we are re-running in about six states.

And all of the efforts we need to put into those six states, we still need to do.

We can’t afford to slack off and say the job is done; we still have some things to do.”

Recalling the experiences he had during the electioneering, Osinbajo said his encounter with Nigerians as he crisscrossed the country, campaigning for votes, showed that Nigerians are so trusting and supportive of their leaders.

I think that one of the main characteristics of the Nigerian is how so supportive and trusting many of our people are and they don’t ask us for too much.

They never really ask for anything that is impossible to do.

And that’s why, for many of us that went around this country, we realized the tremendous amount of work that there is to do and our capacity to do so much work.

What our people need, as we discovered, isn’t that much.

As a matter of fact, I do not know any nation where the people are so generous no matter how poor they are.

Osinbajo said there was need for the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to connect more with the people.

It just struck me that what we really need to do a lot more is to connect with the people.

All the people need is opportunity for us to interact with them.

We should have a way by which everybody is involved one way or the other.

One of the complaints that people made about our government is that we were not communicating enough and that people did not know what had done.”

The vice president acknowledged that the diligent communication carried out to put across the APC message in 2015 was not sustained, making the administration lose some ground to the opposition, especially in the social media.

He said the new administration would ensure that it makes change in that regard.

Osinbajo said that he would take up everyone who has challenged the administration on the issue with a view to getting its communication of programmes and policies better.

Speaking at the event, the APC Woman Leader, Salamatu Eluma, commended the volunteers for believing in the vision of the President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo and working for their re-election.
