  • 2019: Osinbajo disowns group campaigning for his election as President

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday disowned a group known as Osinbajo Volunteers, which is campaigning for his election as president in 2019.

Distancing himself from activities of the group, Osinbajo, through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, asked Nigerians to disregard the group, adding that he had nothing to do with them.

“Please, disregard this website created by faceless people for mischievous purposes. It has absolutely nothing to do with the Vice President,” Akande said via his Twitter handle on Saturday.

The group was canvassing Osinbajo as a presidential candidate in the 2019 election.

In a veiled reference to a former vice president turned president who was described as “clueless,” the Osinbajo Volunteers noted that Nigeria now has a “leader who has a clue what to do and (how to) turn Nigeria the beloved to the land of our dreams.”

The group featured the activities of the vice president on its website, while calling on members of the public to volunteer for Osinbajo.

It however noted that it did not receive the endorsement of the vice president, noting that it had never met him.

“Note that Osinbajo did not endorse this volunteer group. We have never met him. We are strong believers in the fact that he is the right ruler for Nigeria and must create a peoples volunteer base for him,” the volunteers stated on their website.

In his words: “We need to look at a realistic solution to this problem, the dredging of River Benue is very important in addressing this flood issue and we will do something about it,’’ the President said.

Osinbajo said government was not only concerned about this year’s flood disaster but the 2012 disaster too and would find permanent solution to Benue incessant flooding.

“The intention of the Federal Government is not just to assist flood victims but also to find ways of providing real opportunities to help Nigerians improve their standard of living.”

Earlier, Governor Samuel Ortom, while welcoming the Vice President, appealed to the Federal Government to assist the state in dredging the river and complete ongoing drainage system in the state.

Ortom also commended the President for his prompt response and provision of relief materials to the flood victims.

He said that the state had received eight-truck load of relief materials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), adding that five were on the way.

  • ASUU crisis: Buhari did not appoint Osinbajo head of negotiation team – Presidency

The presidency has debunked claims that President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as head of Federal Government’s negotiating team with members of the Academic Staff Union, ASUU who are currently on strike over the non-implementation of the 2009 agreements signed with the union.

This was revealed on Friday by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, in a message he posted on his twitter handle, @akandeoj.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, had in an interview with State House correspondents at the end of Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting given an indication that Osinbajo had taken over the negotiation.

He had said a meeting would be held in the Vice President’s office after which they will get back to ASUU for another round of meeting.

“At council today, the Vice President has taken over some of the aspects of the negotiations and discussions. So we are continuing the meeting in his office and when we finish meeting, we will get back to ASUU for another round of meeting.

“We are hopeful that we will be able to go to an appreciable extent to solve some of the outstanding issues that is preventing them from going back to work,” Ngige had said.

But Akande said the media reports that the Vice President had taken over the negotiation as untrue and inaccurate.

He said Ngige and the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, would continue to lead the negotiation.

“News reports that Vice President Osinbajo has taken over ASUU negotiations is untrue and inaccurate. Labour and Education Ministers will continue to lead the talks,” Akande wrote.

  • ASUU crisis: Buhari appoints Osinbajo head of FG’s negotiation team with lecturers

In a bid to resolve the lingering strike embarked upon by members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday appointed Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo to head the Federal Government’s negotiation team with the striking lecturers.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that ASUU has been on strike since August 13 over the failure of the government to implement an agreement it reached with the union in 2009.

The union also alleged that the Federal Government did not implement the Memorandum of Understanding the two sides signed in 2013.

The union, in a statement on Tuesday, said it would call off its strike after receiving a positive response to its demands from the Federal Government.

The teachers boycotted a meeting scheduled to hold between the government and the union on Tuesday.

Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige briefed State House correspondents at the end of the FEC meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Ngige, who was with the Ministers of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola and Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, also blamed the private sector for the delay in announcing the chairman of the Minimum Wage Review Committee.

According to him, the Federal Government is ready and will announce the chairman of the committee when all the names of representatives of the private sector is received.

He said: “The government thanked the parents and even the students who are supposed to take their exams and promotional exams now but have been forced by circumstances beyond their control to stay at home. I have one of my children at home as we speak.

Government is leaving no stone unturned to make sure that we reach a conclusive agreement with ASUU so that they can go back to the classroom. This is the first national strike that this government is facing and we want to discuss.

The Vice President has taken over some of the aspects of the negotiations and discussions, so we are continuing the meeting in his office and when we finish meeting, we will get back to ASUU for another round of meeting and we are hopeful that we will be able to go to an appreciable extent to solve some of the outstanding issues that is preventing them from going back to work,” he said.

The Federal Government, he said, is ready and will announce the chairman of the Minimum Wage Review Committee when all the names of representatives of the private sector are received.

He said: “The National Minimum Wage Committee, the government side is ready. We have on the government side four ministers – ministers of Labour and Employment, Finance, Budget and Planning. I can’t remember the last one now but we have our team ready. We also have the Head of Service of the Federation, Acting Secretary to the Government of the Federation on the government team. The chairman will be unveiled when we have full component of the committee.

The aspect that is delaying us from inaugurating the committee is the organised private sector. The organised private sector has eight representatives of which the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) has four nominations, we have not gotten their nominations. Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has two nominations; their nominations just came in yesterday. Nigeria Association of Small Medium Enterprise (NASME) has one; they have not sent in their nomination. NACCIMA has not sent in its nominations.

So we are waiting fir these nominations. When they come in, the government will nominate the chairman and inaugurate the committee.” he added

  • We may adopt selective minimum wage increase – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says the Federal Government may consider increasing workers’ remuneration package, especially bonuses of certain government agencies, instead of increasing wages across board.

According to a transcript made available to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, the Vice-President spoke during a session titled, ‘Conversation with the Vice-President’ at the 2017 Nigerian Bar Association National Conference held in Lagos on Monday.

Osinbajo said though the issue of better pay for workers was a good suggestion, the government was “in a bind of sorts.”

He said at the moment, the government was spending 70 per cent of its revenues on remuneration and overheads, leaving less than 30 per cent for capital expenditure.

He said while it was correct that the country needed a more efficient civil service that would be paid more, there was also the need to increase revenues.

Osinbajo said, “Sometimes, it is a chicken and egg situation because in order to increase revenues, we need to increase remuneration.

“I think that what we are probably going to end up doing is what we have done with some of the parastatals; in other words, identifying certain government services that must be remunerated differently in order to increase efficiency. One of the revenue generating agencies, for instance, is the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

“Improving remuneration, especially bonuses, would do a lot of good. That we saw happen in Lagos with the Lagos Inland Revenue Service, where because there were bonuses, there was improvement in revenue and reform. People were able to do better, even in our judicial system. Because we paid better; we remunerated better, people were able to improve.”

The Vice-President said the commitment of the present administration was to leave Nigeria with all the resources that could be brought to the table.

He said it was also the desire of the administration to leave the country with transparency and efficiency in all aspects.

Meanwhile, Osinbajo has called on the management of ECOWAS Investment Bank to increase agricultural funding in order to reduce the level of poverty and unemployment in the sub region.

He said this on Tuesday in Abuja at the 15th Annual General Meeting of the board of governors of the bank.

He said the need to boost funding to the agricultural sector became imperative as it held the key to unlocking the growth and prosperity of the continent.

He said the current situation where economies of various countries were facing falling government revenues on the account of commodity price slumps, declining economic growth and the challenge of creating jobs necessitated the need for the bank to step up its intervention in member countries.

The VP said the economic challenges had put greater pressure on governments of the member states to urgently diversify their economies.

He said, “The population of the sub region is a youthful one, 70 per cent of our population is under 35 (years) with all the implications for providing education and livelihood.

“So, the challenges of today call for greater creativity, and foresight in supporting and making investments in our member countries.

“So one of the crucial issues today, which would decisively impact the future is how the bank can make a difference in the lives of our young people.”

Osinbajo acknowledged the support of the bank, but noted that there was a need to galvanise more resources to enable it to effectively achieve its mandate.

The President of the Bank, Bashir Ifo, in his speech at the event, said during the 2016 financial year, 11 projects amounting to $121.5m were appraised.

  • You are looters, show evidence of N1.3trn spent on capital projects in 2016, PDP tells APC, Osinbajo

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Tuesday reacted to a statement credited to the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo that the Federal Government spent N1.3 trillion on capital projects in 2016.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Osinbajo disclosed this at a plenary of the 2017 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) national conference in Lagos with the theme: “African Business: Penetrating Through Institution Building.”

The party noted that there was absolutely nothing on ground to show that such outrageous amount was spent on any project anywhere in the country.

The party’s position was made known through series of tweets via its Tweeter handle @OfficialPDPNig

The party tweeted: “We are alarmed and highly bewildered to hear from VP @ProfOsinbajo that N1.3tr was spent on Capital Projects in 2016! #APCLooters

“N1.3tr on capital projects & nothing to show for it is unacceptable. Should we assume the VP @ProfOsinbajo was misquoted?

“Apart from the infrastructures handed over to the @APCNigeria led gov’t by PDP, nothing has been done in the last 2 1/2 years

The PDP called on the Vice President to provide clarifications on how the money was spent.”

It added, “We believe the VP @ProfOsinbajo will provide clarifications on how the N1.3tr was spent on Capital Projects in 2016.”

As at press time, TheNewsGuru.com reports that spokesperson to the Vice President, Laolu Akande is yet to issue any official statement to the accusations of the PDP.

  • Expect strong leadership now that Buhari is back – Osinbajo tells Nigerians

Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on yesterday said the return of President Muhammadu Buhari to the country would yield double growth for the Nigerian economy.

The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Vice President, Laolu Akande, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.

Osinbajo said: “The President, of course as you know, is very committed to everything we have done. I mean, as much as it was possible, we worked together on most of these issues. And what we are doing essentially was executing a plan, the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) and we intend to continue to execute it as efficiently as possible.

So, I think we should expect double efforts as opposed to single effort now that the President is back. And I’m sure that you are going to see very strong leadership.”

According to him, the common man on the street will soon begin to see and feel the real growth of the economy.

So I think the common man would begin to see, because we are talking about real growth, we are talking about growth in jobs, and a lot of that is going to start with actual production dealing with agriculture first.

We are hoping that the agro-processing would catch up. We are hoping that resource manufacturing also would catch up, all of the resource manufacturing. We are hoping that even the innovation and technology-led manufacturing will also catch up.

But in all of these, you know we are at a point where I think we are taking off quite well and we will soon see significant improvement in the lives of the people.”

He said the Nigerian domestic market is large enough to create the kind of opportunities that other countries would salivate about.

So, I think we are in a good place. We are certainly behind the curve in terms of realising the potential in agriculture, the potential in agro-processing. But in the past year and a half, I think that more and more innovation and opportunities are arising and more people are going into farming. More and more investors are coming into farming, so we think we are in a very good place,” the vice president stated.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that President Muhammadu Buhari returned to the country on Saturday, August 19 from a medical trip in London after spending 103 days. The Vice President acted in his stead throughout the period.

  • Welcome speech: PDP knocks Buhari, commends Osinbajo for ‘taking steps to unite the nation’

…As part urges Nigerians to keep praying for president’s full recovery

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s Monday broadcast as a monumental anticlimax, saying the President missed an opportunity to calm restiveness and frayed nerves among the citizenry.

A statement last night signed by the party’s Head of Publicity, Chinwe Nnorom on behalf of the National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said the speech failed to inspire confidence in the people.

According to the PDP Nigerians were expectantly looking forward to a robust speech that could imbue confidence in the capacity of the government to take on the challenges of governance, but did not get it.

However, rather than rekindle that hope and confidence, that speech delivered earlier this morning can most charitably be described as a monumental anticlimax.

The President and his handlers missed a golden opportunity to reconnect with the people through addressing issues that have direct bearing to their well-being and those of their children and dependents.

Indeed, the President’s speech did not contain anything new; just a rehash of statements that already had been made by both government and various leaders of thought across the country.

The PDP had cause to commend the then Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo for going round the country to engage with relevant stakeholders, which certainly was a better approach.

The PDP believes that rather than rehashing the worn out clichés about Nigeria’s unity not being negotiable, Nigerians would have loved to hear their President come out definitively to tell them what realistic measures his government intended to take to uproot the causes of perennial agitations and counter agitations that are now becoming a recurring decimal in our national discourse.

The party believes that instead of always mouthing the indivisibility of this country, the government should be seen walking the talk by instilling confidence in all the people across board that it belongs to all.

The casual mention of ‘elements of Boko Haram’, kidnappings, farmers versus herdsmen clashes’ etc, were also somewhat on the perfunctory side and do not imbue confidence”, the statement added.

The PDP observed that the President returned to the country in a week that saw the closure of all public universities as a result of the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Yet, not even a whimper from our President. Has the future of the future leaders of our country sunk so low in the estimation of our current leaders that the issue was considered not important enough to command a mention in the President’s address?

To this end, the PDP once again welcomes the President back home and continues to pray for his total recovery as well as God’s guidance.

But we believe Nigerians deserve a richer statement from a President that was away from them for more than a hundred days during which a lot happened that should have elicited more than a mention in that speech”
